Rapid Suppression of the Charge Density Wave in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ under Hydrostatic Pressure

We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $\sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ demonstrate that this very rapid effect cannot be explained by pressure-induced modification of the doping level and highlight the different role of external pressure and doping in tuning the phase diagram of the cuprates. Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the CDW formation and its interplay with superconductivity.

Nonmesonic Weak Decay of $Λ$ Hypernuclei: The Three--Nucleon Induced Mode

The nonmesonic weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach which is extended to include the three--nucleon induced mechanism. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism which, through the local density approximation, allows us to model finite hypernuclei, a one--meson--exchange weak transition potential and a Bonn nucleon--nucleon strong potential. One--, two-- and three--nucleon induced weak decay rates are predicted for $^{12}_Λ$C by including ground state correlations up to second order in the nucleon--nucleon potential and the recoil of the residual nucleus. Three--nucleon stimulated decays, $ΛNNN\to nNNN$ ($N=n$ or $p$), are considered here for the first time. The obtained decay rates compare well with the latest KEK and FINUDA data. The three--nucleon induced rate turns out to be dominated by $nnp$-- and $npp$--induced decays, it amounts to $\sim$ 7\% of the total nonmesonic rate and it is $\sim 1/2$ of the neutron--induced decay rate. The reduction effect of the nuclear recoil is particularly relevant for the three--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 15\%), less important for the two--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 4\%) and negligible for the one--nucleon induced rates. Given the non--negligible size of the three--nucleon induced contribution and consequently its importance in the precise determination of the complete set of decay rates, new measurements and/or experimental analysis are encouraged.

The Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Double-Lambda Hypernuclei: A Microscopic Approach

The non--mesonic weak decay of double--$Λ$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach. Besides the nucleon--induced mechanism, $ΛN\to nN$, widely studied in single--$Λ$ hypernuclei, additional hyperon--induced mechanisms, $ΛΛ\to Λn$, $ΛΛ\to Σ^0 n$ and $ΛΛ\to Σ^-p$, are accessible in double--$Λ$ hypernuclei and are investigated here. As in previous works on single--$Λ$ hypernuclei, we adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation and a one--meson exchange weak transition potential (including the ground state pseudoscalar and vector octets mesons) supplemented by correlated and uncorrelated two--pion--exchange contributions. The weak decay rates are evaluated for hypernuclei in the region of the experimentally accessible light hypernuclei $^{10}_{ΛΛ}$Be and $^{13}_{ΛΛ}$B. Our predictions are compared with a few previous evaluations. The rate for the $ΛΛ\to Λn$ decay is dominated by $K$--, $K^*$-- and $η$--exchange and turns out to be about 2.5\% of the free $Λ$ decay rate, $Γ_Λ^{\rm free}$, while the total rate for the $ΛΛ\to Σ^0 n$ and $ΛΛ\to Σ^- p$ decays, dominated by $π$--exchange, amounts to about 0.25\% of $Γ_Λ^{\rm free}$. The experimental measurement of these decays would be essential for the beginning of a systematic study of the non--mesonic decay of strangeness $-2$ hypernuclei. This field of research could also shed light on the possible existence and nature of the $H$--dibaryon.

Temperature dependence of iron local magnetic moment in phase-separated superconducting chalcogenide

We have studied local magnetic moment and electronic phase separation in superconducting K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ by x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy. Detailed temperature dependent measurements at the Fe K-edge have revealed coexisting electronic phases and their correlation with the transport properties. By cooling down, the local magnetic moment of Fe shows a sharp drop across the superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) and the coexisting phases exchange spectral weights with the low spin state gaining intensity at the expense of the higher spin state. After annealing the sample across the iron-vacancy order temperature, the system does not recover the initial state and the spectral weight anomaly at T$_c$ as well as superconductivity disappear. The results clearly underline that the coexistence of the low spin and high spin phases and the transitions between them provide unusual magnetic fluctuations and have a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism of electronically inhomogeneous K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system.

Compressibility and pressure-induced disorder in superconducting phase-separated Cs0.72Fe1.57Se2

Pressure-dependent diffraction response of the superconducting phase separated Cs0.72Fe1.57Se2 has been studied using synchrotron radiation up to the pressure of 19 GPa. The main and secondary phases of Cs0.72Fe1.57Se2 have been observed in the whole pressure range. The main ordered phase has been found to undergo an order-disorder transition in the Fe-sublattice at least at P = 11 GPa with the corresponding kinetics on the order of hours. Contrary to the analogous temperature induced transition, the secondary phase has not been suppressed suggesting that its stability pressure range is higher than 19 GPa or the corresponding transformation kinetics is slower at room temperature. Together with the previously reported pressure-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, this work indicates that superconductivity in the AxFe2-ySe2 (A - alkali metals) phases could be related to the Fe-vacancy ordering in the main phase.

Hydrostatic pressure to trigger and assist magnetic transitions: baromagnetic refrigeration

The possible application of the barocaloric effect to produce solid state refrigerators is a topic of interest in the field of applied physics. In this work, we present experimental data about the influence of external pressure on the magnetic properties of a manganite with phase separation. Using the Jahn Teller effect associated with the presence of the charge ordering we were able to follow the transition to the ferromagnetic state induced by pressure. We also demonstrated that external pressure can assist the ferromagnetic state, decreasing the magnetic field necessary to generate the magnetic transition.

Ionic ammonia ice

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that solid molecular ammonia becomes unstable at room temperature and high pressures and transforms into an ionic crystalline form. This material has been characterised in both hydrogenated NH3 and deuterated ND3 ammonia samples up to about 180 and 200 GPa, respectively, by infrared absorption, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The presence of a new, strong IR absorption band centered at 2500 cm-1 in NH3 (1900 cm-1 in ND3) signals the ionization of ammonia molecules into NH2- and NH4+ ions, in line with previous theoretical predictions. We find experimental evidence for a coexistence of two crystalline ionic forms, which our ab-initio structure searches predict to be the most stable at the relevant pressures. The ionic crystalline form of ammonia is stable at low temperatures, which contrasts with the behaviour of water in which no equivalent crystalline ionic phase has been found.

Pressure dependence of the charge density wave in 1T-TaS2 and its relation to superconductivity

We present a state-of-the-art x-ray diffraction study of the charge density wave order in 1T-TaS2 as a function of temperature and pressure. Our results prove that the charge density wave, which we characterize in terms of wave vector, amplitude and the coherence length, indeed exists in the superconducting region of the phase diagram. The data further imply that the ordered charge density wave structure as a whole becomes superconducting at low temperatures, i. e, superconductivity and charge density wave coexist on a macroscopic scale in real space. This result is fundamentally different from a previously proposed separation of superconducting and insulating regions in real space and, instead, provides evidence that the superconducting and the charge density wave gap exist in separate regions of reciprocal space.

Effect of nanostructuration on compressibility of cubic BN

Compressibility of high-purity nanostructured cBN has been studied under quasi-hydrostatic conditions at 300 K up to 35 GPa using diamond anvil cell and angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. A data fit to the Vinet equation of state yields the values of the bulk modulus B0 of 375(4) GPa with its first pressure derivative B0' of 2.3(3). The nanometer grain size (\sim20 nm) results in decrease of the bulk modulus by ~9%.

On the effect of the Delta(1232) in hypernuclear non-mesonic weak decay: a microscopic approach

The non-mesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach which includes, for the first time, the effect or the $Δ$-baryon resonance. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation, a one-meson exchange weak transition potential, a Bonn nucleon-nucleon strong potential and a $ΔN\to NN$ strong potential based on the Landau-Migdal theory. Ground state correlations and final state interactions (FSI), at second order in the baryon-baryon strong interaction, are introduced on the same footing for all the isospin channels of one- and two-nucleon induced decays. Weak decay rates and single and double-coincidence nucleon spectra are predicted for $^{12}_Λ$C and compared with recent KEK and FINUDA data. The $Δ(1232)$ introduces new FSI-induced decay mechanisms which lead to an improvement when comparing the obtained nucleon spectra with data, while it turns out to have a negligible effect on the decay rates. Discrepancies with experiment remain only for emission spectra involving protons, but are mostly restricted to double-nucleon correlations in the non-back-to-back kinematics.

Reversible switching of room temperature ferromagnetism in CeO2-Co nanoparticles

We investigated the reversible ferromagnetic (FM) behavior of pure and Co doped CeO2 nanopowders. The as-sintered samples displayed an increasing paramagnetic contribution upon Co doping. Room temperature FM is obtained simply by performing thermal treatments in vacuum at temperatures as low as 500^{\circ}C and it can be switched off by performing thermal treatments in oxidizing conditions. The FM contribution is enhanced as we increase the time of the thermal treatment in vacuum. Those systematic experiments establish a direct relation between ferromagnetism and oxygen vacancies and open a path for developing materials with tailored properties.

Microscopic approach to the proton asymmetry in the non-mesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei

The non--mesonic weak decay of polarized $Λ$-hypernuclei is studied with a microscopic diagrammatic formalism in which one- and two-nucleon induced decay mechanisms, $\vecΛ N \to NN$ and $\vecΛ NN \to NNN$, are considered together with (and on the same ground of) nucleon final state interactions. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation. Our approach adopts different one-meson-exchange weak transition potentials, while the strong interaction effects are accounted for by a Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction. We also consider the two-pion-exchange effect in the weak transition potential. Both the two-nucleon induced decay mechanism and the final state interactions reduce the magnitude of the asymmetry. The quantum interference terms considered in the present microscopic approach give rise to an opposite behavior of the asymmetry with increasing energy cuts to that observed in models describing the nucleon final state interactions semi-classically via the intranuclear cascade code. Our results for the asymmetry parameter in $^{12}_Λ$C obtained with different potential models are consistent with the asymmetry measured at KEK.

Effect of the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As on the magnetic and structural properties of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O

The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.

Direct observation of the influence of the As-Fe-As angle on the Tc of superconducting SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

The electrical resistivity, crystalline structure and electronic properties calculated from the experimentally measured atomic positions of the compound SmFeAsO$_{0.81}$F$_{0.19}$ have been studied up to pressures ~20GPa. The correlation between the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and crystallographic parameters on the same sample shows clearly that a regular FeAs$_{4}$ tetrahedron maximizes Tc, through optimization of carrier transfer to the FeAs planes as indicated by the evolution of the electronic band structures.

Understanding the complex phase diagram of uranium: the role of electron-phonon coupling

We report an experimental determination of the dispersion of the soft phonon mode along [1,0,0] in uranium as a function of pressure. The energies of these phonons increase rapidly, with conventional behavior found by 20 GPa, as predicted by recent theory. New calculations demonstrate the strong pressure (and momentum) dependence of the electron-phonon coupling, whereas the Fermi-surface nesting is surprisingly independent of pressure. This allows a full understanding of the complex phase diagram of uranium, and the interplay between the charge-density wave and superconductivity.

Pressure dependence of the low- temperature crystal structure and phase transition behaviour of CaFeAsF and SrFeAsF: A synchrotron x-ray diffraction study

We report systematic investigation of high pressure crystal structures and structural phase transition upto 46 GPa in CaFeAsF and 40 GPa in SrFeAsF at 40 K using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments and Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data. We find that CaFeAsF undergoes orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition at Pc = 13.7 GPa while increasing pressure. SrFeAsF exhibits coexistence of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases over a large pressure range from 9 to 39 GPa. The coexistence of the two phases indicates that the transition is of first order in nature. Unlike in the 122 compounds (BaFe2As2 & CaFe2As2) we do not find any collapse tetragonal transition. The transition to a lower symmetry phase (orthorhombic to monoclinic) in 1111 compounds under pressure is in contrast with the transition to a high symmetry phase (orthorhombic to tetragonal) in 122 type compounds. On heating from 40 K at high pressure, CaFeAsF undergoes monoclinic to tetragonal phase transition around 25 GPa and 200 K. Further, it does not show any post-tetragonal phase transition and remains in the tetragonal phase upto 25 GPa at 300 K. The dPc/dT is found to be positive for the CaFeAsF & CaFe2As2, however the same was not found in case of BaFe2As2. We discuss observations of structural evolution in the context of superconductivity in these and other Fe-based compounds. It appears that the closeness of the Fe-As-Fe bond angle to its ideal tetrahedral value of 109.470 might be associated with occurrence of superconductivity at low temperature.

Microscopic Approach to Nucleon Spectra in Hypernuclear Non-Mesonic Weak Decay

A consistent microscopic diagrammatic approach is applied for the first time to the calculation of the nucleon emission spectra in the non-mesonic weak decay of Lambda-hypernuclei. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation, a one--meson exchange weak transition potential and a Bonn nucleon-nucleon strong potential. Ground state correlations and final state interactions, at second order in the nucleon--nucleon interaction, are introduced on the same footing for all the isospin channels of one- and two-nucleon induced decays. Single and double--coincidence nucleon spectra are predicted for 12_Lambda^C and compared with recent KEK and FINUDA data. The key role played by quantum interference terms allows us to improve the predictions obtained with intranuclear cascade codes. Discrepancies with data remain for proton emission.

An improved determination of the two--nucleon induced non mesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei

The decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei without pion emission, known as Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD), gives an effective tool to investigate $Δ$S=1 four-baryon interactions. It was theoretically suggested that the two-nucleon induced mechanism could play a substantial role in reproducing the observed NMWD decay rates and nucleon spectra, but at present no direct evidence of such a mechanism has been obtained. The FINUDA experiment, exploiting the possibility to detect both charged and neutral particles coming from the hypernucleus decay, has allowed us to deduce the relative weight of the two nucleon induced decay rate to the total NMWD rate. The value of $Γ_{2N}$/$Γ_{NMWD}$=0.24$\pm$${0.03_{stat}}^{+0.03_{sys}}_{-{0.02_{sys}}}$ has been deduced, with an error reduced by a factor more than two compared with the previous assessment.
