Orbital reconstruction and two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Conventional two-dimensional electron gases are realized by engineering the interfaces between semiconducting compounds. In 2004, Ohtomo and Hwang discovered that an electron gas can be also realized at the interface between large gap insulators made of transition metal oxides [1]. This finding has generated considerable efforts to clarify the underlying microscopic mechanism. Of particular interest is the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system, because it features especially striking properties. High carrier mobility [1], electric field tuneable superconductivity [2] and magnetic effects [3], have been found. Here we show that an orbital reconstruction is underlying the generation of the electron gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 n-type interface. Our results are based on extensive investigations of the electronic properties and of the orbital structure of the interface using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. In particular we find that the degeneracy of the Ti 3d states is fully removed, and that the Ti 3dxy levels become the first available states for conducting electrons.

Dispersing bimagnons and doping induced bimagnon-charge modes in superconducting cuprates

In the early days of high temperature superconductivity it was already recognized that magnetic properties of these materials are intimately related to the superconducting ones . When doped, the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic background of pristine copper-oxide insulators melts away and makes room for a spin liquid and superconductivity. By resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the soft regime we probe the hitherto inaccessible dynamical multiple-spin correlations of the magnetic background in a series of parent compounds and in high Tc materials [NCCO (Nd2-xCexCuO4) and LSCO (La2-xSrxCuO4)]. High resolution measurements allows the clear observation of dispersing bimagnon excitations. In the undoped compounds the theory, fits the data on these coherent spin excitations without free parameters. In nearly optimally doped LSCO we observe the appearance of a new collective excitation at an energy of 250 +/- 60 meV having the signature of a coupled bimagnon-charge mode. It has a strongly reduced dispersion and lies in a so far unexplored region of momentum and energy space in the mid-infrared.

Evidence of orbital reconstruction at interfaces in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films

Electronic properties of transition metal oxides at interfaces are influenced by strain, electric polarization and oxygen diffusion. Linear dichroism (LD) x-ray absorption, diffraction, transport and magnetization on thin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films, allow identification of a peculiar universal interface effect. We report the LD signature of preferential 3d-eg(3z2-r2) occupation at the interface, suppressing the double exchange mechanism. This surface orbital reconstruction is opposite of that favored by residual strain and independent of dipolar fields, chemical nature of the substrate and capping.

Indirect electric field doping of the CuO2 planes of the cuprate NdBa2Cu3O7 superconductor

The mechanism of field-effect doping in the "123" high critical temperature superconductors (HTS) has been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the presence of an electric field. We demonstrate that holes are created at the CuO chains of the charge reservoir and that field-effect doping of the CuO2 planes occurs by charge transfer, from the chains to the planes, of a fraction of the overall induced holes. The electronic properties of the charge reservoir and of the dielectric/HTS interface determine the electric field doping of the CuO2 planes

A determination of the pairing interaction in the high Tc cuprate superconductor Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl2212)

We have measured the near-normal reflectance of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl2212) for energies from 0.1 to 4.0 eV at room temperature and used a Kramers-Kronig analysis to find the complex, frequency dependent dielectric function, from which the optical conductivity was determined. Using Thermal-Difference-Reflectance (TDR) Spectroscopy the reflectance of the sample in the normal state just above the superconducting transition, and in the superconducting state were then obtained. From these data we determined the ratio of the superconducting- to normal-state optical conductivities. Mattis and Bardeen had calculated this function within the BCS theory, where the gap is a fixed energy-independent quantity. Taking into account the retarded nature of the electron-phonon coupling results in a complex, energy dependent gap causing deviations from the Mattis-Bardeen plot at energies where the phonon coupling function is large. We find a typical deviation near the phonon energies in Tl2212, and in addition, at 1.2 and 1.7eV. The phonon, and these electronic terms can each be described by a coupling constant. None of which by itself gives rise to a high transition temperature, but the combination does. Using Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) we find that the d-to-d excitations of the cuprate ion in Tl2212 fall at the same energies as the dips in the Mattis-Bardeen plot. We conclude that the high superconducting transition temperature of the cuprates is due to the sum of the phonon interaction, and interactions with the Cu-ion d-shell.

Observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano-effect in the valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets

The pure Fano-effect in angle-integrated valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photo-electrons has been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to the Fano-effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the theoretical photo-current and spin difference spectra are found in good quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co only a qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on the basis of plain local spin density approximation (LSDA). Agreement with experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT).

Determination of the orbital moment and crystal field splitting in LaTiO$_{3}$

Utilizing a sum-rule in a spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopic experiment with circularly polarized light, we show that the orbital moment in LaTiO$_3$ is strongly reduced both below and above the Néel temperature. Using Ti $L_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectroscopy as a local probe, we found that the crystal field splitting in the $t_{2g}$ subshell is about 0.12-0.30 eV. This large splitting does not facilitate the formation of an orbital liquid.

Exchange Splitting and Charge Carrier Spin Polarization in EuO

High quality thin films of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO have been prepared and were studied using a new form of spin-resolved spectroscopy. We observed large changes in the electronic structure across the Curie and metal-insulator transition temperature. We found that these are caused by the exchange splitting of the conduction band in the ferromagnetic state, which is as large as 0.6 eV. We also present strong evidence that the bottom of the conduction band consists mainly of majority spins. This implies that doped charge carriers in EuO are practically fully spin polarized.
