The effect of the neutron and proton numbers ratio in colliding nuclei at formation of the evaporation residues in the $^{34}$S+$^{208}$Pb and $^{36}$S+$^{206}$Pb reactions

The difference between observed cross sections of the evaporation residues (ER) of the $^{34}$S+$^{208}$Pb and $^{36}$S+$^{206}$Pb reactions formed in the 2n and 3n channels has been explained by two reasons related with the entrance channel characteristics of these reactions. The first reason is that the capture cross section of the latter reaction is larger than the one of the $^{34}$S+$^{208}$Pb reaction since the nucleus-nucleus potential is more attractive in the $^{36}$S+$^{206}$Pb reaction due to two more neutrons in isotope $^{36}$S. The second reason is the difference in the heights of the intrinsic fusion barrier $B^*_{\rm fus}$ appearing on the fusion trajectory by nucleon transfer between nuclei of the DNS formed after the capture. The value of $B^*_{\rm fus}$ calculated for the $^{34}$S+$^{208}$Pb reaction is higher than the one obtained for the $^{36}$S+$^{206}$Pb reaction. This fact has been caused by the difference between the $N/Z$-ratios in the light fragments of the DNS formed during the capture in these reactions. The $N/Z$-ratio has been found by solution of the transport master equations for the proton and neutron distributions between fragments of the DNS formed at capture with the different initial neutron numbers $N=18$ and $N=20$ for the reactions with the $^{34}$S and $^{36}$S, respectively.

Role of charged particle emission on the evaporation residue formation in the $^{82}$Se+$^{138}$Ba reaction leading to the $^{220}$Th compound nucleus

We present detailed results of a theoretical investigation on the production of evaporation residue nuclei obtained in a heavy ion reaction when charged particles (proton and $α$-particle) are also emitted with the neutron evaporation along the deexcitation cascade of the formed compound nucleus. The almost mass symmetric $^{82}$Se+$^{138}$Ba reaction has been studied since there are many experimental results on individual evaporation residue (ER) cross sections after few light particle emissions along the cascade of the $^{220}$Th compound nucleus (CN) covering the wide 12--70 MeV excitation energy range. Our specific theoretical results on the ER cross sections for the $^{82}$Se+$^{138}$Ba are in good agreement with the available experimental measurements, but our overall theoretical results concerning all possible relevant contributions of evaporation residues are several times greater than the ERs measured in experiment. The discrepancy could be due to the experimental difficulties in the identification of ER nuclei after the emission of multiple neutral and charged particles, nevertheless the analysis of ER data is very important to test the reliability of the model and to stress the importance on the investigation of ER nuclei also obtained after charged particle emissions.

Effects of entrance channels on the deexcitation properties of the same compound nucleus formed by different pairs of collision partners

The properties of deexcitation of the same $^{220}$Th compound nucleus (CN) formed by different mass (charge) asymmetric reactions are investigated. It is demonstrated that the effective fission barrier $ $ value being a function of the excitation energy $E^*_{\rm CN}$ is strongly sensitive to the various orbital angular momentum $L=\ell\hbar$ distributions of CN formed with the same excitation energy $E^*_{CN}$ by the very different entrance channels $^{16}$O+$^{204}$Pb, $^{40}$Ar+$^{180}$Hf, $^{82}$Se+$^{138}$Ba and $^{96}$Zr+$^{124}$Sn. Consequently, the competition between the fission and evaporation of light particles (neutron, proton, and $α$-particle) processes along the deexcitation cascade of CN depends on the orbital angular momentum distribution of CN. Therefore, the ratio between the evaporation residue cross sections obtained after emission of neutral and charged particles and neutrons only for the same CN with a given excitation energy $E^*_{CN}$ is sensitive to the mass (charge) asymmetry of reactants in the entrance channel.

Uncertainties and understanding of experimental and theoretical results regarding reactions forming heavy and superheavy nuclei

Experimental and theoretical results of the $P_{\mathrm{CN}}$ fusion probability of reactants in the entrance channel and the $W_{\mathrm{sur}}$ survival probability against fission at deexcitation of the compound nucleus formed in heavy-ion collisions are discussed. The theoretical results for a set of nuclear reactions leading to formation of compound nuclei (CNs) with the charge number $Z=102\text{--}122$ reveal a strong sensitivity of $P_{\mathrm{CN}}$ to the characteristics of colliding nuclei in the entrance channel, dynamics of the reaction mechanism, and excitation energy of the system. We discuss the validity of assumptions and procedures for analysis of experimental data, and also the limits of validity of theoretical results obtained by the use of phenomenological models. The comparison of results obtained in many investigated reactions reveals serious limits of validity of the data analysis and calculation procedures.

Measurement of the running of the fine structure constant below 1 GeV with the KLOE Detector

We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant $α(s)$ in the time-like region $0.6<\sqrt s< 0.975$ GeV with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE using the Initial State Radiation process $e^+e^-\toμ^+ μ^-γ$. It represents the first measurement of the running of $α(s)$ in this energy region. Our results show a more than 5$σ$ significance of the hadronic contribution to the running of $α(s)$, which is the strongest direct evidence both in time- and space-like regions achieved in a single measurement. By using the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-$ cross section measured by KLOE, the real and imaginary part of the shift $Δα(s)$ has been extracted. By a fit of the real part of $Δα(s)$ and assuming the lepton universality the branching ratio $BR(ω\toμ^+μ^-) = (6.6\pm1.4_{stat}\pm1.7_{syst})\cdot 10^{-5} $ has been determined.

Measurement of the $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ transition form factor with the KLOE detector

A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_ϕ$ collected at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. These events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor $| F_{ϕπ^0}(q^2) |$ and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the decay: $\rm{BR}\,(ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-) = (\,1.35 \pm 0.05^{\,\,+0.05}_{\,\,-0.10}\,) \times 10 ^{-5}$. The result improves significantly on previous measurements and is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Limit on the production of a new vector boson in $\mathrm{e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ with the KLOE experiment

The recent interest in a light gauge boson in the framework of an extra U(1) symmetry motivates searches in the mass range below 1 GeV. We present a search for such a particle, the dark photon, in ${\rm e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ based on 28 million $\mathrm{e^+ e^-} \rightarrow π^+ π^-γ$ events collected at DA$Φ$NE by the KLOE experiment. The $π^+ π^-$ production by initial-state radiation compensates for a loss of sensitivity of previous KLOE ${\rm U} \rightarrow \mathrm{e^+ e^-}$, $μ^+μ^-$ searches due to the small branching ratios in the $ρ-ω$ resonance region. We found no evidence for a signal and set a limit at 90\% CL on the mixing strength between the photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, in the U mass range between $527$ and $987$~MeV. Above 700 MeV this new limit is more stringent than previous ones.

Precision measurement of the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ Dalitz plot distribution with the KLOE detector

Using $1.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+ e^-\toϕ\toηγ$ data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Dalitz plot distribution for the $η\to π^+ π^- π^0$ decay is studied with the world's largest sample of $\sim 4.7 \cdot 10^6$ events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrized as a polynomial expansion up to cubic terms in the normalized dimensionless variables $X$ and $Y$. The experiment is sensitive to all charge conjugation conserving terms of the expansion, including a $gX^2Y$ term. The statistical uncertainty of all parameters is improved by a factor two with respect to earlier measurements.

Limit on the production of a low-mass vector boson in $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ with the KLOE experiment

The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the $\mathrm{U}$ boson, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb$^{-1}$, we studied the process $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, with $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$, using radiative-return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90\%~CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, at $10^{-6}$--$10^{-4}$ in the 5--520~MeV/c$^2$ mass range.

Strangeness Photoproduction at the BGO-OD Experiment

BGO-OD is a newly commissioned experiment to investigate the internal structure of the nucleon, using an energy tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam at the ELSA electron facility. The setup consists of a highly segmented BGO calorimeter surrounding the target, with a particle tracking magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. BGO-OD is ideal for investigating meson photoproduction. The extensive physics programme for open strangeness photoproduction is introduced, and preliminary analysis presented.

First Measurement of the $Σ$ Beam Asymmetry in $η^{\prime}$ Photoproduction off the Proton near Threshold

The $Σ$ beam asymmetry in $η^{\prime}$ photoproduction off the proton was measured at the GrAAL polarised photon beam with incoming photon energies of 1.461 and 1.480 GeV. For both energies the asymmetry as a function of the meson production angle shows a clear structure, more pronounced at the lowest one, with a change of sign around 90$^o$. The observed behaviour is compatible with P-wave D-wave (or S-wave F-wave) interference, the closer to threshold the stronger. The results are compared to the existing state-of-the-art calculations that fail to account for the data.

Evidence for narrow resonant structures at $W \approx 1.68$ and $W \approx 1.72$ GeV in real Compton scattering off the proton

First measurement of the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for Compton scattering off the proton in the energy range $E_γ=0.85 - 1.25$ GeV is presented. The data reveals two narrow structures at $E_γ= 1.036$ and $E_γ=1.119$ GeV. They may signal narrow resonances with masses near $1.68$ and $1.72$ GeV, or they may be generated by the sub-threshold $KΛ$ and $ωp$ production. Their decisive identification requires additional theoretical and experimental efforts.

Search for dark Higgsstrahlung in e+ e- -> mu+ mu- and missing energy events with the KLOE experiment

We searched for evidence of a Higgsstrahlung process in a secluded sector, leading to a final state with a dark photon U and a dark Higgs boson h', with the KLOE detector at DAFNE. We investigated the case of h' lighter than U, with U decaying into a muon pair and h' producing a missing energy signature. We found no evidence of the process and set upper limits to its parameters in the range 2m_mu<m_U<1000 MeV, m_h'<m_U.

Study of Dalitz decay phi -> eta e+e- with KLOE detector

We have studied the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay phi -> eta e+e-, with eta -> pi0pi0pi0, with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. The data set of 1.7 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at sqrt(s)~Mphi contains a clear conversion decay signal of ~31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(phi -> eta e+e-)=(1.075+-0.007+-0.038)x10-4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e- invariant mass spectrum, obtaining b(phi eta) =(1.17 +- 0.10 + 0.07) GeV-2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations.

Search for light vector boson production in $e^+e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- γ$ interactions with the KLOE experiment

We have searched for a light vector boson $U$, the possible carrier of a "dark force", with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE \epm\ collider, motivated by astrophysical evidence for the presence of dark matter in the universe. Using \epm\ collisions collected with an integrated luminosity of $239.3$~pb$^{-1}$, we look for a dimuon mass peak in the reaction \epm\to$μ^+ μ^-$\gam, corresponding to the decay $U\toμ^+μ^-$. We find no evidence for a $U$ vector boson signal. We set a 90\% CL upper limit for the mixing parameter squared between the photon and the $U$ boson of 1.6$\times$10$^{-5}$ to 8.6$\times$10$^{-7}$ for the mass region $520<m_{\rm U}<980$ MeV.

First measurement of the 2.4 and 2.9 MeV $^6$He three-cluster resonant states via the $^3$H($^4$He,p$α$)2n four-body reaction

Two new low-lying $^6$He levels at excitation energies of about 2.4 and 2.9 MeV were observed in the experimental investigation of the p-$α$ coincidence spectra obtained by the $^3$H($^4$He,p$α$)2n four-body reaction at $E_{\rm \,^4He}$ beam energy of 27.2 MeV. The relevant $E^*$ peak energy and $Γ$ energy width spectroscopic parameters for such $^6$He$^*$ excited states decaying into the $α$+n+n channel were obtained by analyzing the bidimensional ($E_{\rm p}$, $E_{\rm α}$) energy spectra. The present new result of two low-lying $^6$He$^*$ excited states above the $^4$He+2n threshold energy of 0.974 MeV is important for the investigation of the nuclear structure of neutron rich light nuclei and also as a basic test for theoretical models in the study of the three-cluster resonance feature of $^6$He.

Test of CPT and Lorentz symmetry in entangled neutral kaons with the KLOE experiment

Neutral kaon pairs produced in phi decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating process phi->K_S K_L->pi+pi-pi+pi- based on 1.7 fb-1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati phi-factory DAFNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Delta_amu for neutral kaons in the contest of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are: Delta_ao = (-6.0 +- 7.7_{stat} +- 3.1_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ax = ( 0.9 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.6_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ay = (-2.0 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_az = ( 3.1 +- 1.7_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension.

IRIDE White Book, An Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure based on Dual Electron linacs&lasers

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities.
