Energy density as a probe of band representations in photonic crystals

Topological Quantum Chemistry (TQC) has recently emerged as a instrumental tool to characterize the topological nature of both fermionic and bosonic band structures. TQC is based on the study of band representations and the localization of maximally localized Wannier functions. In this article, we study various two-dimensional photonic crystal structures analyzing their topological character through a combined study of TQC, their Wilson-loop spectra and the electromagnetic energy density. Our study demonstrates that the analysis of the spatial localization of the energy density complements the study of the topological properties in terms of the spectrum of the Wilson-loop operator and TQC.

Limit Cycle Phase and Goldstone Mode in Driven Dissipative Systems

In this article, we theoretically investigate the first- and second-order quantum dissipative phase transitions of a three-mode cavity with a Hubbard interaction. In both types, there is a mean-field limit cycle phase where the local U(1)symmetry and the time-translational symmetry (TTS) of the Liouvillian super-operator are spontaneously broken (SSB). This SSB manifests itself through the appearance of an unconditionally and fully squeezed state at the cavity output, connected to the well-known Goldstone mode. By employing the Wigner function formalism hence, properly including the quantum noise, we show that away from the thermodynamic limit and within the quantum regime, fluctuations notably limit the coherence time of the Goldstone mode due to the phase diffusion. Our theoretical predictions suggest that interacting multimode photonic systems are rich, versatile testbeds for investigating the crossovers between the mean-field picture and quantum phase transitions. A problem that can be investigated in various platforms including superconducting circuits, semiconductor microcavities, atomic Rydberg polaritons, and cuprite excitons.

Asymmetric optical nuclear spin pumping in a single uncharged quantum dot

A highly asymmetric dynamic nuclear spin pumping is observed in a single self assembled InGaAs quantum dot subject to resonant optical pumping of the neutral exciton transition leading to a large maximum polarization of 54%. This dynamic nuclear polarization is found to be much stronger following pumping of the higher energy Zeeman state. Time-resolved measurements allow us to directly monitor the buildup of the nuclear spin polarization in real time and to quantitatively study the dynamics of the process. A strong dependence of the observed dynamic nuclear polarization on the applied magnetic field is found, with resonances in the pumping efficiency being observed for particular magnetic fields. We develop a model that fully accounts for the observed behaviour, where the pumping of the nuclear spin system is due to hyperfine-mediated spin flip transitions between the states of the neutral exciton manifold.

Optical Superradiance from Nuclear Spin Environment of Single Photon Emitters

We show that superradiant optical emission can be observed from the polarized nuclear spin ensemble surrounding a single photon emitter such as a single quantum dot (QD) or Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center. The superradiant light is emitted under optical pumping conditions and would be observable with realistic experimental parameters.

Entanglement generation via a completely mixed nuclear spin bath

We show that qubits coupled sequentially to a mesoscopic static completely mixed spin bath via the Heisenberg interaction can become highly entangled. Straightforward protocols for the generation of multipartite entangled (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-)states are presented. We show the feasibility of an experimental realization in a quantum dot by the hyperfine interaction of an electron with the nuclear spins.

Quantum Description of Nuclear Spin Cooling in a Quantum Dot

We study theoretically the cooling of an ensemble of nuclear spins coupled to the spin of a localized electron in a quantum dot. We obtain a master equation for the state of the nuclear spins interacting with a sequence of polarized electrons that allows us to study quantitatively the cooling process including the effect of nuclear spin coherences, which can lead to ``dark states'' of the nuclear system in which further cooling is inhibited. We show that the inhomogeneous Knight field mitigates this effect strongly and that the remaining dark state limitations can be overcome by very few shifts of the electron wave function, allowing for cooling far beyond the dark state limit. Numerical integration of the master equation indicates, that polarizations larger than 90% can be achieved within a millisecond timescale.

Noise-Free Measurement of Harmonic Oscillators with Instantaneous Interactions

We present a method of measuring the quantum state of a harmonic oscillator through instantaneous probe-system selective interactions of the Jaynes-Cummings type. We prove that this scheme is robust to general decoherence mechanisms, allowing the possibility of measuring fast-decaying systems in the weak-coupling regime. This method could be applied to different setups: motional states of trapped ions, microwave fields in cavity/circuit QED, and even intra-cavity optical fields.

Quantum measurement of a mesoscopic spin ensemble

We describe a method for precise estimation of the polarization of a mesoscopic spin ensemble by using its coupling to a single two-level system. Our approach requires a minimal number of measurements on the two-level system for a given measurement precision. We consider the application of this method to the case of nuclear spin ensemble defined by a single electron-charged quantum dot: we show that decreasing the electron spin dephasing due to nuclei and increasing the fidelity of nuclear-spin-based quantum memory could be within the reach of present day experiments.

Quantum information processing using localized ensembles of nuclear spins

We describe a technique for quantum information processing based on localized en sembles of nuclear spins. A qubit is identified as the presence or absence of a collective excitation of a mesoscopic ensemble of nuclear spins surrounding a single quantum dot. All single and two-qubit operations can be effected using hyperfine interactions and single-electron spin rotations, hence the proposed scheme avoids gate errors arising from entanglement between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Ultra-long coherence times of nuclear spins suggest that this scheme could be particularly well suited for applications where long lived memory is essential.

Gaussian Entanglement of Formation

We introduce a Gaussian version of the entanglement of formation adapted to bipartite Gaussian states by considering decompositions into pure Gaussian states only. We show that this quantity is an entanglement monotone under Gaussian operations and provide a simplified computation for states of arbitrary many modes. For the case of one mode per site the remaining variational problem can be solved analytically. If the considered state is in addition symmetric with respect to interchanging the two modes, we prove additivity of the considered entanglement measure. Moreover, in this case and considering only a single copy, our entanglement measure coincides with the true entanglement of formation.

Entanglement of formation for symmetric Gaussian states

We show that for a fixed amount of entanglement, two-mode squeezed states are those that maximize Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-like correlations. We use this fact to determine the entanglement of formation for all symmetric Gaussian states corresponding to two modes. This is the first instance in which this measure has been determined for genuine continuous variable systems.

Entanglement transformations of pure Gaussian states

We present a theory of entanglement transformations of Gaussian pure states with local Gaussian operations and classical communication. This is the experimentally accessible set of operations that can be realized with optical elements such as beam splitters, phase shifts and squeezers, together with homodyne measurements. We provide a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility to transform a pure bipartite Gaussian state into another one. We contrast our criterion with what is possible if general local operations are available.

Separability Criterion for all bipartite Gaussian States

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of Gaussian states of bipartite systems of arbitrarily many modes. The condition provides an operational criterion since it can be checked by simple computation. Moreover, it allows us to find a pure product-state decomposition of any given separable Gaussian state. Our criterion is independent of the one based on partial transposition, and is strictly stronger.

Physical implementation for entanglement purification of Gaussian continuous variable quantum states

We give a detailed description of the entanglement purification protocol which generates maximally entangled states with high efficiencies from realistic Gaussian continuous variable entangled states. The physical implementation of this protocol is extensively analyzed using high finesse cavities and cavity enhanced cross Kerr nonlinearities. In particular, we take into account many imperfections in the experimental scheme and calculate their influences. Quantitative requirements are given for the relevant experimental parameters.

Entanglement purification of Gaussian continuous variable quantum states

We describe an entanglement purification protocol to generate maximally entangled states with high efficiencies from two-mode squeezed states or from mixed Gaussian continuous entangled states. The protocol relies on a local quantum non-demolition measurement of the total excitation number of several continuous variable entangled pairs. We propose an optical scheme to do this kind of measurement using cavity enhanced cross--Kerr interactions.

Inseparability criterion for continuous variable systems

An inseparability criterion based on the total variance of a pair of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type operators is proposed for continuous variable systems. The criterion provides a sufficient condition for entanglement of any two-party continuous variable states. Furthermore, for all the Gaussian states, this criterion turns out to be a necessary and sufficient condition for inseparability.

Lower Bounds for Attainable Fidelity in Entanglement Purification

We derive lower bounds for the attainable fidelity of standard entanglement purification protocols when local operations and measurements are subjected to errors. We introduce an error parameter which measures the distance between the ideal completely positive map describing a purification step and the one in the presence of errors. We derive non--linear maps for a lower bound of the fidelity at each purification step in terms of this parameter.
