Enhancement of structural rearrangement in glassy systems under shear flow

We extend the analysis of the mean field schematic model recently introduced for the description of glass forming liquids to the case of a supercooled fluid subjected to a shear flow of rate $γ$. After quenching the system to a low temperature $T$, a slow glassy regime is observed before stationarity is achieved at the characteristic time $τ_g$. $τ_g$ is of the order of the usual equilibration time without shear $τ_g^o$ for weak shear, $γτ_g ^o<1$. For larger shear, $γτ_g ^o>1$, local rearrangement of dense regions is instead enhanced by the flow, and $τ_g \simeq 1/(Tγ)$.

Phase-separation of binary fluids in shear flow: a numerical study

The phase-separation kinetics of binary fluids in shear flow is studied numerically in the framework of the continuum convection-diffusion equation based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Simulations are carried out for different temperatures both in d=2 and in d=3. Our results confirm the qualitative picture put forward by the large-N limit equations studied in \cite{noi}. In particular, the structure factor is characterized by the presence of four peaks whose relative oscillations give rise to a periodic modulation of the behavior of the rheological indicators and of the average domains sizes. This peculiar pattern of the structure factor corresponds to the presence of domains with two characteristic thicknesses whose relative abundance changes with time.

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of segregating binary fluid mixtures in shear flow

We apply lattice Boltzmann method to study the phase separation of a two-dimensional binary fluid mixture in shear flow. The algorithm can simulate systems described by the Navier-Stokes and convection-diffusion equations. We propose a new scheme for imposing the shear flow which has the advantage of preserving mass and momentum conservation on the boundary walls without introducing slip velocities. Our main results concern the presence of two typical lenght scales in the phase separation process, corresponding to domains with two different thicknesses. Our simulations at low viscosity confirm previous results only valid in the limit of infinite viscosity.

Steady State of microemulsions in shear flow

Steady-state properties of microemulsions in shear flow are studied in the context of a Ginzburg-Landau free-energy approach. Explicit expressions are given for the structure factor and the time correlation function at the one loop level of approximation. Our results predict a four-peak pattern for the structure factor, implying the simultaneous presence of interfaces aligned with two different orientations. Due to the peculiar interface structure a non-monotonous relaxation of the time correlator is also found.

Folding transitions of the square--diagonal two--dimensional lattice

The phase diagram of a vertex model introduced by P. Di Francesco (Nucl. Phys. B 525, 507 1998) representing the configurations of a square lattice which can fold with different bending energies along the main axes and the diagonals has been studied by Cluster Variation Method. A very rich structure with partially and completely folded phases, different disordered phases and a flat phase is found. The crumpling transition between a disordered and the flat phase is first-order. The CVM results are confimed by the analysis of the ground states and of the two limits where the model reduces to an Ising model.

Structure and rheology of binary mixtures in shear flow

Results are presented for the phase separation process of a binary mixture subject to an uniform shear flow quenched from a disordered to a homogeneous ordered phase. The kinetics of the process is described in the context of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with an external velocity term. The large-N approximation is used to study the evolution of the model in the presence of a stationary flow and in the case of an oscillating shear. For stationary flow we show that the structure factor obeys a generalized dynamical scaling. The domains grow with different typical lengthscales $R_x$ and $R_\perp$ respectively in the flow direction and perpendicularly to it. In the scaling regime $R_\perp \sim t^{α_\perp}$ and $R_x \sim γt^{α_x}$ (with logarithmic corrections), $γ$ being the shear rate, with $α_x=5/4$ and $α_\perp =1/4$. The excess viscosity $Δη$ after reaching a maximum relaxes to zero as $γ^{-2}t^{-3/2}$. $Δη$ and other observables exhibit log-time periodic oscillations which can be interpreted as due to a growth mechanism where stretching and break-up of domains cyclically occur. In the case of an oscillating shear a cross-over phenomenon is observed: Initially the evolution is characterized by the same growth exponents as for a stationary flow. For longer times the phase separating structure cannot align with the oscillating drift and a different regime is entered with an isotropic growth and the same exponents of the case without shear.

Phase-ordering dynamics of binary mixtures with field-dependent mobility in shear flow

The effect of shear flow on the phase-ordering dynamics of a binary mixture with field-dependent mobility is investigated. The problem is addressed in the context of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with an external velocity term, studied in self-consistent approximation. Assuming a scaling ansatz for the structure factor, the asymptotic behavior of the observables in the scaling regime can be analytically calculated. All the observables show log-time periodic oscillations which we interpret as due to a cyclical mechanism of stretching and break-up of domains. These oscillations are dumped as consequence of the vanishing of the mobility in the bulk phase.

Two-scale competition in phase separation with shear

The behavior of a phase separating binary mixture in uniform shear flow is investigated by numerical simulations and in a renormalization group (RG) approach. Results show the simultaneous existence of domains of two characteristic scales. Stretching and cooperative ruptures of the network produce a rich interplay where the recurrent prevalence of thick and thin domains determines log-time periodic oscillations. A power law growth $ R(t) \sim t^α$ of the average domain size, with $α=4/3$ and $α= 1/3$ in the flow and shear direction respectively, is shown to be obeyed.

Spinodal decomposition of a binary mixture in an uniform shear flow

Results are presented for the phase separation process of a binary mixture subject to an uniform shear flow quenched from a disordered to a homogeneous ordered phase. The kinetics of the process is described in the context of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with an external velocity term. The one-loop approximation is used to study the evolution of the model. We show that the structure factor obeys a generalized dynamical scaling. The domains grow with different typical lengthscales $R_x$ and $R_y$ respectively in the flow and in the shear directions. In the scaling regime $R_y \sim t^{α_y}$ and $R_x \sim t^{α_x}$, with $α_x=5/4$ and $α_y =1/4$. The excess viscosity $Δη$ after reaching a maximum relaxes to zero as $γ^{-2}t^{-3/2}$, $γ$ being the shear rate. $Δη$ and other observables exhibit log-time periodic oscillations which can be interpreted as due to a growth mechanism where stretching and break-up of domains cyclically occur.

A Lattice Boltzmann Model of Ternary Fluid Mixtures

A lattice Boltzmann model is introduced which simulates oil-water-surfactant mixtures. The model is based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with two scalar order parameters. Diffusive and hydrodynamic transport is included. Results are presented showing how the surfactant diffuses to the oil-water interfaces thus lowering the surface tension and leading to spontaneous emulsification. The rate of emulsification depends on the viscosity of the ternary fluid.

Correlation functions by Cluster Variation Method for Ising model with NN, NNN and Plaquette interactions

We consider the procedure for calculating the pair correlation function in the context of the Cluster Variation Methods. As specific cases, we study the pair correlation function in the paramagnetic phase of the Ising model with nearest neighbors, next to the nearest neighbors and plaquette interactions in two and three dimensions. In presence of competing interactions, the so called disorder line separates in the paramagnetic phase a region where the correlation function has the usual exponential behavior from a region where the correlation has an oscillating exponentially damped behavior. In two dimensions, using the plaquette as the maximal cluster of the CVM approximation, we calculate the phase diagram and the disorder line for a case where a comparison is possible with results known in literature for the eight-vertex model. In three dimensions, in the CVM cube approximation, we calculate the phase diagram and the disorder line in some cases of particular interest. The relevance of our results for experimental systems like mixtures of oil, water and surfactant is also discussed.

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of lamellar and droplet phases

Lattice Boltzmann simulations are used to investigate spinodal decomposition in a two-dimensional binary fluid with equilibrium lamellar and droplet phases. We emphasise the importance of hydrodynamic flow to the phase separation kinetics. For mixtures slightly asymmetric in composition the fluid phase separates into bulk and lamellar phases with the lamellae forming distinctive spiral structures to minimise their elastic energy.

Critical behaviour of the three-dimensional gonihedric Ising Model

We use the cluster variation method (CVM) and Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the phase structure of the 3d gonihedric Ising actions defined by Savvidy and Wegner. This model corresponds to the usual three-dimensional cubic Ising model with nearest, next to the nearest, and plaquette interactions in the region with degenerate lamellar ground states. The picture of the phase diagram given by the CVM is in good agreement with the results of Monte Carlo simulations, and it is shown that the gonihedric model is in the same universality class of the ordinary three-dimensional Ising model.

Monte Carlo study of the growth of striped domains

We analyze the dynamical scaling behavior in a two-dimensional spin model with competing interactions after a quench to a striped phase. We measure the growth exponents studying the scaling of the interfaces and the scaling of the shrinking time of a ball of one phase plunged into the sea of another phase. Our results confirm the predictions found in previous papers. The correlation functions measured in the direction parallel and transversal to the stripes are different as suggested by the existence of different interface energies between the ground states of the model. Our simulations show anisotropic features for the correlations both in the case of single-spin-flip and spin-exchange dynamics.

Anisotropic dynamical scaling in a spin model with competing interactions

Results are presented for the kinetics of domain growth of a two-dimensional Ising spin model with competing interactions quenched from a disordered to a striped phase. The domain growth exponent are $β=1/2$ and $β=1/3$ for single-spin-flip and spin-exchange dynamics, as found in previous simulations. However the correlation functions measured in the direction parallel and transversal to the stripes are different as suggested by the existence of different interface energies between the ground states of the model. In the case of single-spin-flip dynamics an anisotropic version of the Ohta-Jasnow-Kawasaki theory for the pair scaling function can be used to fit our data.

Spinodal decomposition to a lamellar phase: effects of hydrodynamic flow

Results are presented for the kinetics of domain growth of a two-dimensional fluid quenched from a disordered to a lamellar phase. At early times when a Lifshitz-Slyozov mechanism is operative the growth process proceeds logarithmically in time to a frozen state with locked-in defects. However when hydrodynamic modes become important, or the fluid is subjected to shear, the frustration of the system is alleviated and the size and orientation of the lamellae attain their equilibrium values.

New critical behaviour of the three-dimensional Ising model with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions

The critical and multicritical behavior of the simple cubic Ising model with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions is studied using the cube and star-cube approximations of the cluster variation method and the recently proposed cluster variation--Padé approximant method. Particular attention is paid to the line of critical end points of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition: its (multi)critical exponents are calculated, and their values suggest that the transition belongs to a novel universality class. A rough estimate of the crossover exponent is also given.

The Phase Diagram of the Gonihedric 3d Ising Model via CVM

We use the cluster variation method (CVM) to investigate the phase structure of the 3d gonihedric Ising actions defined by Savvidy and Wegner. The geometrical spin cluster boundaries in these systems serve as models for the string worldsheets of the gonihedric string embedded in ${\bf Z}^3$. The models are interesting from the statistical mechanical point of view because they have a vanishing bare surface tension. As a result the action depends only on the angles of the discrete surface and not on the area, which is the antithesis of the standard 3d Ising model. The results obtained with the CVM are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations for the critical temperatures and the order of the transition as the self-avoidance coupling $κ$ is varied. The value of the magnetization critical exponent $β= 0.062 \pm 0.003$, calculated with the cluster variation--Padè approximant method, is also close to the simulation results.
