A first comparison of search methods for gravitational wave bursts using LIGO and Virgo simulated data

We present a comparative study of 6 search methods for gravitational wave bursts using simulated LIGO and Virgo noise data. The data's spectra were chosen to follow the design sensitivity of the two 4km LIGO interferometers and the 3km Virgo interferometer. The searches were applied on replicas of the data sets to which 8 different signals were injected. Three figures of merit were employed in this analysis: (a) Receiver Operator Characteristic curves, (b) necessary signal to noise ratios for the searches to achieve 50 percent and 90 percent efficiencies, and (c) variance and bias for the estimation of the arrival time of a gravitational wave burst.

A First Comparison Between LIGO and Virgo Inspiral Search Pipelines

This article reports on a project that is the first step the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have taken to prepare for the mutual search for inspiral signals. The project involved comparing the analysis pipelines of the two collaborations on data sets prepared by both sides, containing simulated noise and injected events. The ability of the pipelines to detect the injected events was checked, and a first comparison of how the parameters of the events were recovered has been completed.

Effect of two gaps on the flux lattice internal field distribution: evidence of two length scales from muSR in Mg1-xAlxB2

We have measured the transverse field muon spin precession in the flux lattice (FL) state of the two gap superconductor MgB2 and of the electron doped compounds Mg1-xAlxB2 in magnetic fields up to 2.8T. We show the effect of the two gaps on the internal field distribution in the FL, from which we determine two coherence length parameters and the doping dependence of the London penetration depth. This is an independent determination of the complex vortex structure already suggested by the STM observation of large vortices in a MgB2 single crystal. Our data agrees quantitatively with STM and we thus validate a new phenomenological model for the internal fields.

Inertial control of the mirror suspensions of the VIRGO interferometer for gravitational wave detection

In order to achieve full detection sensitivity at low frequencies, the mirrors of interferometric gravitational wave detectors must be isolated from seismic noise. The VIRGO vibration isolator, called 'superattenuator', is fully effective at frequencies above 4 Hz. Nevertheless, the residual motion of the mirror at the mechanical resonant frequencies of the system are too large for the interferometer locking system and must be damped. A multidimensional feedback system, using inertial sensors and digital processing, has been designed for this purpose. An experimental procedure for determining the feedback control of the system has been defined. In this paper a full description of the system is given and experimental results are presented.

Staggered magnetization, critical behavior and weak ferromagnetic propert ies of LaMnO$_3$ by muon spin rotation

We present a study of a microtwinned single crystal of LaMnO$_3$ by means of implanted muons. Two muon stopping sites are identified from the symmetry of the internal field in the ordered phase. The temperature dependence of these fields yields the behavior of the staggered magnetization from which a static critical exponent ($β=0.36(2)$) is extracted and discussed. The muon spin-spin relaxation rate shows a critical slowing down (contrary to preliminary findings) with a critical exponent $n=0.7(1)$, witnessing the Ising nature of the dynamic fluctuations. The muon precession frequencies vs. applied magnetic field reveal the saturation of the weak ferromagnetic domain structure originated by the Dzialoshinski-Moriya antisymmetric exchange.
