Field quantization for open optical cavities

We study the quantum properties of the electromagnetic field in optical cavities coupled to an arbitrary number of escape channels. We consider both inhomogeneous dielectric resonators with a scalar dielectric constant $ε({\bf r})$ and cavities defined by mirrors of arbitrary shape. Using the Feshbach projector technique we quantize the field in terms of a set of resonator and bath modes. We rigorously show that the field Hamiltonian reduces to the system--and--bath Hamiltonian of quantum optics. The field dynamics is investigated using the input--output theory of Gardiner and Collet. In the case of strong coupling to the external radiation field we find spectrally overlapping resonator modes. The mode dynamics is coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.

Field quantization for chaotic resonators with overlapping modes

Feshbach's projector technique is employed to quantize the electromagnetic field in optical resonators with an arbitray number of escape channels. We find spectrally overlapping resonator modes coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external radiation field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.

Photocount statistics of chaotic lasers

We derive the photocount statistics of the radiation emitted from a chaotic laser resonator in the regime of single-mode lasing. Random spatial variations of the resonator eigenfunctions lead to strong mode-to-mode fluctuations of the laser emission. The distribution of the mean photocount over an ensemble of modes changes qualitatively at the lasing transition, and displays up to three peaks above the lasing threshold.

Phase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic systems

This is a review of the phase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic conductors. As a paradigm we study the transmission amplitude and the dephasing rate for electron transport through a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. We summarize experimental and theoretical work devoted to the phase of the transmission amplitude. It is shown that the evolution of the transmission phase may be dominated by non-universal features in the short-time dynamics of the quantum dot. The controlled dephasing in Coulomb coupled conductors is investigated. Examples comprise a single or multiple quantum dots in close vicinity to a quantum point contact. The current through the quantum point contact "measures" the state of the dots and causes dephasing. The dephasing rate is derived using widely different theoretical approaches. The Coulomb coupling between mesoscopic conductors may prove useful for future work on electron coherence and quantum computing.

A Mesoscopic Quantum Eraser

Motivated by a recent experiment by Buks et al. [Nature 391, 871 (1998)] we consider electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with a quantum dot in one of its arms. The quantum dot is coupled to a quantum system with a finite number of states acting as a which-path detector. The Aharonov-Bohm interference is calculated using a two-particle scattering approach for the joint transitions in detector and quantum dot. Tracing over the detector yields dephasing and a reduction of the interference amplitude. We show that the interference can be restored by a suitable measurement on the detector and propose a mesoscopic quantum eraser based on this principle.

Quantum Zeno effect and parametric resonance in mesoscopic physics

As a realization of the quantum Zeno effect, we consider electron tunneling between two quantum dots with one of the dots coupled to a quantum point contact detector. The coupling leads to decoherence and to the suppression of tunneling. When the detector is driven with an ac voltage, a parametric resonance occurs which strongly counteracts decoherence. We propose a novel experiment with which it is possible to observe both the quantum Zeno effect and the parametric resonance in electric transport.

Deformation of Quantum Dots in the Coulomb Blockade Regime

We extend the theory of Coulomb blockade oscillations to quantum dots which are deformed by the confining potential. We show that shape deformations can generate sequences of conductance resonances which carry the same internal wavefunction. This fact may cause strong correlations of neighboring conductance peaks. We demonstrate the relevance of our results for the interpretation of recent experiments on semiconductor quantum dots.

Independent-Electron Model for the Phase of the Transmission Amplitude in Quantum Dots

Motivated by a recent experiment by Yacoby et al.\ [preprint, 1994], we calculate magnitude and phase $α$ of the transmission amplitude through a quantum dot. We work in the Coulomb blockade regime, assume the electrons not to interact, and consider tunneling through isolated resonances. Assuming a non--resonant background, we find that $α$ increases by $2 π$ over each resonance, with a sharp rise by $π$ over an energy interval much smaller than the thermal width. This is consistent with the experimental data. Our assumptions can be tested by further experiments.

Universality of Random-Matrix Results for non-Gaussian Ensembles

We study random-matrix ensembles with a non-Gaussian probability distribution $P(H) \sim \exp (-N {\rm tr }\, V(H))$ where $N$ is the dimension of the matrix $H$ and $V(H)$ is independent of $N$. Using Efetov's supersymmetry formalism, we show that in the limit $N \rightarrow \infty$ both energy level correlation functions and correlation functions of $S$-matrix elements are independent of $P(H)$ and hence universal on the scale of the local mean level spacing. This statement applies to each of the three generic ensembles (unitary, orthogonal, and symplectic). Universality is also found for correlation functions depending on some external parameter. Our results generalize previous work by Brezin and Zee [Nucl.\ Phys.\ B {\bf 402}, 613 (1993)].
