Slow fluctuations in enhanced Raman scattering and surface roughness relaxation

We propose an explanation for the recently measured slow fluctuations and ``blinking'' in the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum of single molecules adsorbed on a silver colloidal particle. We suggest that these fluctuations may be related to the dynamic relaxation of the surface roughness on the nanometer scale and show that there are two classes of roughness with qualitatively different dynamics. The predictions agree with measurements of surface roughness relaxation. Using a theoretical model for the kinetics of surface roughness relaxation in the presence of charges and optical electrical fields, we predict that the high-frequency electromagnetic field increases both the effective surface tension and the surface diffusion constant and thus accelerates the surface smoothing kinetics and time scale of the Raman fluctuations in manner that is linear with the laser power intensity, while the addition of salt retards the surface relaxation kinetics and increases the time scale of the fluctuations. These predictions are in qualitative agreement with the Raman experiments.

Combined potential and spin impurity scattering in cuprates

We present a theory of combined nonmagnetic and magnetic impurity scattering in anisotropic superconductors accounting for the momentum-dependent impurity potential. Applying the model to the d-wave superconducting state, we obtain a quantitative agreement with the initial suppression of the critical temperature due to Zn and Ni substitutions as well as electron irradiation defects in the cuprates. We suggest, that the unequal pair-breaking effect of Zn and Ni may be related to a different nature of the magnetic moments induced by these impurities.

Comment on the anisotropic impurity scattering in superconductors

We discuss a case of a strong anisotropic impurity scattering within the model introduced in our previous paper [Phys. Rev. B54, 15463 (1996)] and clarify our former statement about a possible enhancement of the critical temperature in this scattering regime. We show that for the anisotropy of the impurity potential determined by the functions from the non-identity irreducible representations of the crystal point group, the critical temperature decreases with the impurity scattering rate which is consistent with a generally understood role of disorder in superconductors.

The phase transition phenomena in anisotropic superconductors: effect of the orthorhombic crystal field and the potential impurity scattering

A combined effect of the orthorhombic crystal field and potential impurity scattering on several superconducting states of a tetragonal symmetry is studied within a weak-coupling mean field approach. It is shown that the nonmagnetic impurities stabilize the states belonging to the identity irreducible representation. The electronic specific heat jump at the phase transition is analyzed. Its dependence on the potential scattering rate for large impurity concentration is shown to be remarkably different for the states with a nonzero value of the Fermi surface averaged order parameter than for those with a vanishing one. In particular, very distinct signals from d_{x^2-y^2} state in YBCO and d_{xy} state in BSCCO compound are predicted. This effect may be used as a test for the presence of these states in the above cuprates.

Effect of anisotropic impurity scattering in superconductors

We discuss the weak-coupling BCS theory of a superconductor with the impurities, accounting for their anisotropic momentum-dependent potential. The impurity scattering process is considered in the t-matrix approximation and its influence on the superconducting critical temperature is studied in the Born and unitary limit for a d- and (d+s)-wave superconductors. We observe a significant dependence of the pair-breaking strength on the symmetry of the scattering potential and classify the impurity potentials according to their ability to alter T_c. A good agreement with the experimental data for Zn doping and oxygen irradiation in the overdoped cuprates is found.

Effects of Fermi Surface Anisotropy on Unconventional Superconductivity in UPt_3

We discuss the weak-coupling BCS theory of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3, accounting for that system's anisotropic, multisheeted Fermi surface by expanding the order parameter and pair potential in terms of appropriate basis functions of the irreducible representations of the D_6h crystal point group. Within a phenomenological model for the electronic structure of UPt_3 chosen to capture the qualitative features of local density functional calculations and de Haas-van Alphen measurements, we show how Fermi surface anisotropy can favor pairing in certain symmetry classes, and influence the phase diagram of unconventional superconductors. We also calculate the Ginzburg-Landau coefficients, focussing on those coefficients relevant to current theories of the UPt_3 phase diagram.

Impurity scattering effect on the specific heat jump in anisotropic superconductors

The specific heat jump at a normal-superconducting phase transition in an anisotropic superconductor with nonmagnetic impurities is calculated within a weak-coupling mean field approximation. It is shown that its dependence on the impurity concentration is remarkably different for d-wave and (d+s)-wave states. This effect may be used as a test for the presence of an s-wave admixture in the cuprates.

Magnetism of Superconducting UPt3

The phase diagram of superconducting $U\!Pt_{3}$ in pressure-temperature plane, together with the neutron scattering data is studied within a two component superconducting order parameter scenario. In order to give a qualitative explanation to the experimental data a set of two linearly independent antiferromagnetic moments which emerge appropriately at the temperature \mbox{$T_{N}\sim 10\cdot T_{c}$} and \mbox{$T_{m}\sim T_{c}$} and couple to superconductivity is proposed. Several constraints on the fourth order coefficients in the Ginzburg-Landau free energy are obtained.
