Numerical evaluation of phase space integrals by sector decomposition

In a series of papers we have developed the method of iterated sector decomposition for the calculation of infrared divergent multi-loop integrals. Here we apply it to phase space integrals to calculate a contribution to the double real emission part of the e+e- -> 2 jets cross section at NNLO. The explicit cancellation of infrared poles upon summation over all possible cuts of a given topology is worked out in detail for a specific example.

Isolated photon + jet photoproduction as a tool to constrain the gluon distribution in the proton and the photon

We analyse how the reaction gamma p -> gamma + jet + X can serve to constrain the gluon distributions. Our results are based on a code of partonic event generator type which includes full NLO corrections. We conclude that there are phase space domains in which either the gluon in the photon or the gluon in the proton give important contributions to the cross section, which should be observable in HERA experiments.

Four-Particle Phase Space Integrals in Massless QCD

The inclusive four-particle phase space integral of any $1\to 4$ matrix element in massless QCD contains divergences due to the soft and collinear emission of up to two particles in the final state. We show that any term appearing in this phase space integral can be expressed as linear combination of only four master integrals. These four master integrals are all computed in dimensional regularisation up to their fourth order terms, relevant to next-to-next-to-leading order jet calculations, both in an analytic form and purely numerically. New analytical and numerical techniques are developed in this context. We introduce the tripole parametrisation of the four-parton phase space. Furthermore, we exploit unitarity relations between multi-parton phase space integrals and multi-loop integrals. For the numerical calculation, the iterated sector decomposition of loop integrals is extended to phase space integrals. The results in this paper lead to infrared subtraction terms needed for the double real radiation contributions to jet physics in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the next-to-next-to-leading order.

Numerical evaluation of multi-loop integrals by sector decomposition

In a recent paper we have presented an automated subtraction method for divergent multi-loop/leg integrals in dimensional regularisation which allows for their numerical evaluation, and applied it to diagrams with massless internal lines. Here we show how to extend this algorithm to Feynman diagrams with massive propagators and arbitrary propagator powers. As applications, we present numerical results for the master 2-loop 4-point topologies with massive internal lines occurring in Bhabha scattering at two loops, and for the master integrals of planar and non-planar massless double box graphs with two off-shell legs. We also evaluate numerically some two-point functions up to 5 loops relevant for beta-function calculations, and a 3-loop 4-point function, the massless on-shell planar triple box. Whereas the 4-point functions are evaluated in non-physical kinematic regions, the results for the propagator functions are valid for arbitrary kinematics.

Constraining the gluon in the proton via photoproduction reactions

Two reactions, the photoproduction of a direct photon plus a jet and the photoproduction of a charged hadron plus a jet, are studied in view of their potential to constrain the gluon distribution in the proton. The results are based on a program of partonic event generator type which includes the full set of NLO corrections.

A numerical method for NNLO calculations

A method to isolate the poles of dimensionally regulated multi-loop integrals and to calculate the pole coefficients numerically is extended to be applicable to phase space integrals as well.

A NLO calculation of the hadron-jet cross section in photoproduction reactions

We study the photoproduction of large-p_T charged hadrons in e p collisions, both for the inclusive case and for the case where a jet in the final state is also measured. Our results are obtained by a NLO generator of partonic events. We discuss the sensitivity of the cross section to the renormalisation and factorisation scales, and to various fragmentation function parametrisations. The possibility to constrain the parton densities in the proton and in the photon is assessed. Comparisons are made with H1 data for inclusive charged hadron production.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

A NLO calculation of the large p_T photon + photon -> photon + jet cross section

We study the production of an isolated large p_T photon as well as the production of an isolated prompt photon plus a jet in e^+e^- collisions. Our results are obtained by a NLO Monte Carlo program of partonic event generator type. We discuss the possibilities to constrain the parton densities in the real photon and compare to preliminary OPAL data.

Is a Large Intrinsic k_T Needed to Describe Photon + Jet Photoproduction at HERA?

We study the photoproduction of an isolated photon and a jet based on a code of partonic event generator type which includes the full set of next-to-leading order corrections. We compare our results to a recent ZEUS analysis in which an effective k_T of the incoming partons has been determined. We find that no additional intrinsic k_T is needed to describe the data.

An automatized algorithm to compute infrared divergent multi-loop integrals

We describe a constructive procedure to separate overlapping infrared divergences in multi-loop integrals. Working with a parametric representation in D=4-2*epsilon dimensions, adequate subtractions lead to a Laurent series in epsilon, where the coefficients of the pole- and finite terms are sums of regular parameter integrals which can be evaluated numerically. We fully automatized this algorithm by implementing it into algebraic manipulation programs and applied it to calculate numerically some nontrivial 2-loop 4-point and 3-loop 3-point Feynman diagrams. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our method to phenomenologically relevant multi--loop calculations such as the NNLO QCD corrections for e^+e^- --> 3 jets.

Calculation of 1-loop Hexagon Amplitudes in the Yukawa Model

We calculate a class of one-loop six-point amplitudes in the Yukawa model. The construction of multi-particle amplitudes is done in the string inspired formalism and compared to the Feynman diagrammatic approach. We show that there exists a surprisingly efficient way of calculating such amplitudes by using cyclic identities of kinematic coefficients and discuss in detail cancellation mechanisms of spurious terms. A collection of formulas which are useful for the calculation of massless hexagon amplitudes is given.

Photoproduction of prompt photons at NLO

A numerical program to calculate the photoproduction of prompt photons is presented. The code includes full next-to-leading order corrections to all subprocesses. The results are compared to recent ZEUS data.

Isolated prompt photon photoproduction at NLO

We present a full next-to-leading order code to calculate the photoproduction of prompt photons. The code is a general purpose program of partonic event generator type with large flexibility. We study the possibility to constrain the photon structure functions and comment on isolation issues. A comparison to ZEUS data is also shown.

A general reduction method for one-loop N-point integrals

In order to calculate cross sections with a large number of particles/jets in the final state at next-to-leading order, one has to reduce the occurring scalar and tensor one-loop integrals to a small set of known integrals. In massless theories, this reduction procedure is complicated by the presence of infrared divergences. Working in n=4-2*epsilon dimensions, it will be outlined how to achieve such a reduction for diagrams with an arbitrary number of external legs. As a result, any integral with more than four propagators and generic 4-dimensional external momenta can be reduced to box integrals.

The QCD and Standard Model Working Group: Summary Report from Les Houches

The Les Houches Workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders took place from June 8-18, 1999. One of the three working groups at Les Houches concentrated on QCD issues, both at the Tevatron Collider and at the LHC. Besides the interest in QCD in its own right, QCD dynamics plays an important role in the production mechanisms for any new physics process that might be observed at either collider, as well as any processes that may form backgrounds to the new physics. This writeup serves both as a pedagogical overview of QCD as well as an update on the current status of the field.
