Rare b hadron decays at the LHC

With the completion of Run~I of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, particle physics has entered a new era. The production of unprecedented numbers of heavy-flavoured hadrons in high energy proton-proton collisions allows detailed studies of flavour-changing processes. The increasingly precise measurements allow to probe the Standard Model with a new level of accuracy. Rare $b$ hadron decays provide some of the most promising approaches for such tests, since there are several observables which can be cleanly interpreted from a theoretical viewpoint. In this article, the status and prospects in this field are reviewed, with a focus on precision measurements and null tests.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Flavour Violation in Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

We study squark flavour violation in the anomaly mediated supersymmetry broken (AMSB) minimal supersymmetric standard model. Analytical expressions for the three-generational squark mass matrices are derived. We show that the anomaly-induced soft breaking terms have a decreasing amount of squark flavour violation when running from the GUT to the weak scale. Taking into account inter-generational squark mixing, we work out non-trivial constraints from B -> Xs gamma and Bs -> mu mu, which complement each other, as well as B -> tau nu decays. We further identify a region of parameter space where the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the B -> Xs gamma branching ratio are simultaneously accommodated. Since anomaly mediation is of the minimal flavour-violating type, the generic flavour predictions for this class of models apply, including a CKM-induced (and hence small) Bs-Bsbar-mixing phase.

Time-delayed feedback in neurosystems

The influence of time delay in systems of two coupled excitable neurons is studied in the framework of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Time-delay can occur in the coupling between neurons or in a self-feedback loop. The stochastic synchronization of instantaneously coupled neurons under the influence of white noise can be deliberately controlled by local time-delayed feedback. By appropriate choice of the delay time synchronization can be either enhanced or suppressed. In delay-coupled neurons, antiphase oscillations can be induced for sufficiently large delay and coupling strength. The additional application of time-delayed self-feedback leads to complex scenarios of synchronized in-phase or antiphase oscillations, bursting patterns, or amplitude death.

Dynamics of delay-coupled excitable neural systems

We study the nonlinear dynamics of two delay-coupled neural systems each modelled by excitable dynamics of FitzHugh-Nagumo type and demonstrate that bistability between the stable fixed point and limit cycle oscillations occurs for sufficiently large delay times and coupling strength. As the mechanism for these delay-induced oscillations we identify a saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Photon polarization from helicity suppression in radiative decays of polarized Lambda_b to spin-3/2 baryons

We give a general parameterization of the Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma decay amplitude, applicable to any strange isosinglet spin-3/2 baryon, and calculate the branching fraction and helicity amplitudes. Large-energy form factor relations are worked out, and it is shown that the helicity-3/2 amplitudes vanish at lowest order in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The suppression can be tested experimentally at the LHC and elsewhere, thus providing a benchmark for SCET. We apply the results to assess the experimental reach for a possible wrong-helicity b --> s gamma dipole coupling in Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma --> p K gamma decays. Furthermore we revisit Lambda_b-polarization at hadron colliders and update the prediction from heavy-quark effective theory. Opportunities associated with b --> d gamma afforded by high-statistics Lambda_b samples are briefly discussed in the general context of CP and flavour violation.

More Model-Independent Analysis of b->s Processes

We study model-independently the implications of non-standard scalar and pseudoscalar interactions for the decays b ->s gamma, b -> s g, b -> s l^+l^- (l=e,mu) and B_s -> mu^+ mu^-. We find sizeable renormalization effects from scalar and pseudoscalar four-quark operators in the radiative decays and at O(alpha_s) in hadronic b decays. Constraints on the Wilson coefficients of an extended operator basis are worked out. Further, the ratios R_H = BR(B -> H mu^+ mu^-)/BR(B -> H e^+ e^-), for H=K^(*), X_s, and their correlations with B_s -> mu^+ mu^- decay are investigated. We show that the Standard Model prediction for these ratios defined with the same cut on the dilepton mass for electron and muon modes, R_H= 1 + O(m^2_mu/m^2_b), has a much smaller theoretical uncertainty (<1%) than the one for the individual branching fractions. The present experimental limit R_K < 1.2 puts constraints on scalar and pseudoscalar couplings, which are similar to the ones from current data on BR(B_s -> mu^+ mu^-). We find that new physics corrections to R_{K*} and R_{X_s} can reach 13% and 10%, respectively.

Improved Model-Independent Analysis of Semileptonic and Radiative Rare B Decays

We update the branching ratios for the inclusive decays $B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ and the exclusive decays $B\to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, with $\ell=e, \m$, in the standard model by including the explicit $O(\a_s)$ and $Λ_{\hbox{\tiny QCD}} / m_b$ corrections. This framework is used in conjunction with the current measurements of the branching ratios for $B\to X_s \g$ and $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays and upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays $B\to (K^*,X_s) \ell^+ \ell^-$ to work out bounds on the Wilson coefficients $C_7$, $C_8$, $C_9$ and $C_{10}$ appearing in the effective Hamiltonian formalism. The resulting bounds are found to be consistent with the predictions of the standard model and some variants of supersymmetric theories. We illustrate the constraints on supersymmetric parameters that the current data on rare B decays implies in the context of minimal flavor violating model and in more general scenarios admitting additional flavor changing mechanisms. Precise measurements of the dilepton invariant mass distributions in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*,K) \ell^+ \ell^-$, in particular in the lower dilepton mass region, and the forward-backward asymmetry in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, will greatly help in discriminating among the SM and various supersymmetric theories.

Report of Snowmass 2001 Working Group E2 : Electron-positron Colliders from the $ϕ$ to the Z

We report on the status and plans of experiments now running or proposed for electron-positron colliders at energies between the $ϕ$ and the Z. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ B and charm factories we considered were PEP-II/BABAR, KEKB/Belle, superKEK, SuperBABAR, and CESR-c/CLEO-c. We reviewed the programs at the $ϕ$ factory at Frascati and the proposed PEP-N facility at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We studied the prospects for B physics with a dedicated linear collider Z factory, associated with the TESLA high energy linear collider. In all cases, we compared the physics reach of these facilities with that of alternative experiments at hadron colliders or fixed target facilities.

Probing for New Physics in Polarized $Λ_b$ decays at the Z

Polarized $Λ_b \to Λγ$ decays at the Z pole are shown to be well suited for probing a large variety of New Physics effects. A new observable is proposed, the angular asymmetry between the $Λ_b$ spin and photon momentum, which is sensitive to the relative strengths of the opposite chirality and Standard Model chirality $b \to s γ$ dipole operators. Combination with the $Λ$ decay polarization asymmetry and comparison with the $Λ_b$ polarization extracted from semileptonic decays allows important tests of the $V-A$ structure of the Standard Model. Modifications of the rates and angular asymmetries which arise at next-to-leading order are discussed. Measurements for $Λ_b \to Λγ$ and the CP conjugate mode, with branching ratios of a few times $10^{-5}$, are shown to be sensitive to non-standard sources of CP violation in the $Λ_b \to Λγ$ matrix element. Form factor relations for heavy-to-light baryon decays are derived in the large energy limit, which are of general interest.

Yet another way to measure $γ$

We show that the CKM phase $2 β+γ$ can be extracted from measurement of the time dependent rates in the decays $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{(*)\pm} M^\mp$ and $B^0 \to D^{(*)\pm} M^\mp$, where $M=a_0$, $π(1300)$, $b_1$, $a_2$, $π_2$, $ρ_3$. These channels have a large asymmetry between decays of $\bar{B}^0$ and $B^0$ into the same final state. Even though the branching ratios are small, their sensitivity to $γ$ can be competitive with decays into $D^{(*)}$ and $(π,ρ,a_1)$.

New ways to explore factorization in b decays

We propose to study factorization breaking effects in exclusive b decays where they are strongly enhanced over the factorizing contributions. This can be done by selecting final-state mesons with a small decay constant or with spin greater than one. We find a variety of decay modes which could help understand the dynamical origin of factorization and the mechanisms responsible for its breaking.

Solving the strong CP problem with supersymmetry

We propose a new solution to the strong CP problem based on supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems. CP is broken spontaneously and it's breaking is communicated to the MSSM by radiative corrections. The strong CP phase is protected by a susy non-renormalization theorem and remains exactly zero while loops can generate a large CKM phase from wave function renormalization. We present a concrete model as an example but stress that our framework is general. We also discuss constraints on susy breaking and point out experimental signatures.

Phenomenology of non-standard Z couplings in exclusive semileptonic b -> s transitions

The rare decays $B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ and $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ are analyzed in a generic scenario where New Physics effects enter predominantly via $Z$ penguin contributions. We show that this possibility is well motivated on theoretical grounds, as the $\bar sbZ$ vertex is particularly susceptible to non-standard dynamics. In addition, such a framework is also interesting phenomenologically since the $\bar sbZ$ coupling is rather poorly constrained by present data. The characteristic features of this scenario for the relevant decay rates and distributions are investigated. We emphasize that both sign and magnitude of the forward-backward asymmetry of the decay leptons in $\bar B\to \bar K^*\ell^+\ell^-$, ${\cal A}^{(\bar B)}_{FB}$, carry sensitive information on New Physics. The observable ${\cal A}^{(\bar B)}_{FB}+{\cal A}^{(B)}_{FB}$ is proposed as a useful probe of non-standard CP violation in $\bar sbZ$ couplings.
