Review of the Classification and Properties of 40 Variable Stars in Sagittarius

This study aims to assess the properties and classification of 40 variable stars in Sagittarius, little studied since their discovery and reported in the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS) 985 and update. Using data from previous studies and several astronomical databases, we performed our analysis mainly utilizing a period analysis software and comparing the photometric characteristics of the variables in a Colour-Absolute Magnitude Diagram. For all stars, the variability is confirmed. We discovered new significant results for the period and/or type of 15 variables and highlighted incorrect cross-reference names on astronomical databases for 5 stars. This assessment also identifies 9 cases for which results from the ASAS-SN Catalog of Variable Stars are systematically not consistent with the original light curves. A correct identification of NSV 10522 is provided.

Arbitrary cylindrical vector beam generation enabled by polarization-selective Gouy phase shifter

Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), which possesses polarization distribution of rotational symmetry on the transverse plane, can be developed in many optical technologies. Conventional methods to generate CVBs contain redundant interferometers or need to switch among diverse elements, thus being inconvenient in applications containing multiple CVBs. Here we provide a passive polarization-selective device to substitute interferometers and simplify generation setup. It is accomplished by reversing topological charges of orbital angular momentum based on polarization-selective Gouy phase. In the process, tunable input light is the only condition to generate CVB with arbitrary topological charges. To cover both azimuthal and radial parameters of CVBs, we express the mapping between scalar Laguerre-Gaussian light on basic Poincar\'e sphere and CVB on high-order Poincar\'e sphere. The proposed device simplifies the generation of CVBs enormously, and thus has potentials in integrated devices for both quantum and classic optical experiments.

Fault-Tolerant Formation Tracking of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems with Time-Varying Actuator Faults and Its Application to Task-Space Cooperative Tracking of Manipulators

This paper addresses a formation tracking problem for nonlinear multi-agent systems with time-varying actuator faults, in which only a subset of agents has access to the leader's information over the directed leader-follower network with a spanning tree. Both the amplitudes and signs of control coefficients induced by actuator faults are unknown and time-varying. The aforementioned setting improves the practical relevance of the problem to be investigated, and meanwhile, it poses technical challenges to distributed controller design and asymptotic stability analysis. By introducing a distributed estimation and control framework, a novel distributed control law based on a Nussbaum gain technique is developed to achieve robust fault-tolerant formation tracking for heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems with time-varying actuator faults. It can be proved that the asymptotic convergence is guaranteed. In addition, the proposed approach is applied to task-space cooperative tracking of networked manipulators irrespective of the uncertain kinematics, dynamics, and actuator faults. Numerical simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

Q-switched Dy:ZBLAN fiber lasers beyond 3 {\mu}m: comparison of pulse generation using acousto-optic modulation and inkjet-printed black phosphorus

We report high-energy mid-infrared pulse generation by Q-switching of dysprosium-doped fiber lasers for the first time. Two different modulation techniques are demonstrated. Firstly, using active acousto-optic modulation, pulses are produced with up to 12 {\mu}J energy and durations as short as 270 ns, with variable repetition rates from 100 Hz to 20 kHz and central wavelengths tunable from 2.97 to 3.23 {\mu}m. Experiments are supported by numerical modeling, identifying routes for improved pulse energies and to avoid multi-pulsing by careful choice of modulator parameters. Secondly, we demonstrate passive Q-switching by fabricating an inkjet-printed black phosphorus saturable absorber, simplifying the cavity and generating 1.0 {\mu}J pulses with 740 ns duration. The performance and relative merits of each modulation approach are then critically discussed. These demonstrations highlight the potential of dysprosium as a versatile gain medium for high-performance pulsed sources beyond 3 {\mu}m.

Yb- and Er-doped fiber laser Q-switched with an optically uniform, broadband WS2 saturable absorber

We demonstrate a ytterbium (Yb) and an erbium (Er)-doped fiber laser Q-switched by a solution processed, optically uniform, few-layer tungsten disulfide saturable absorber (WS2-SA). Nonlinear optical absorption of the WS2-SA in the sub-bandgap region, attributed to the edge-induced states, is characterized by 3.1% and 4.9% modulation depths with 1.38 and 3.83 MW/cm2 saturation intensities at 1030 and 1558 nm, respectively. By integrating the optically uniform WS2-SA in the Yb- and Er-doped laser cavities, we obtain self-starting Q-switched pulses with microsecond duration and kilohertz repetition rates at 1030 and 1558 nm. Our work demonstrates broadband sub-bandgap saturable absorption of a single, solution processed WS2-SA, providing new potential efficacy for WS2 in ultrafast photonic applications.

Wideband saturable absorption in few-layer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) for Q-switching Yb-, Er- and Tm-doped fiber lasers

We fabricate a free-standing molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) saturable absorber by embedding liquid-phase exfoliated few-layer MoSe2 flakes into a polymer film. The MoSe2-polymer composite is used to Q-switch fiber lasers based on ytterbium (Yb), erbium (Er) and thulium (Tm) gain fiber, producing trains of microsecond-duration pulses with kilohertz repetition rates at 1060 nm, 1566 nm and 1924 nm, respectively. Such operating wavelengths correspond to sub-bandgap saturable absorption in MoSe2, which is explained in the context of edge-states, building upon studies of other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based saturable absorbers. Our work adds few-layer MoSe2 to the growing catalog of TMDs with remarkable optical properties, which offer new opportunities for photonic devices.
