Hard colour singlet exchange at the Tevatron from the BFKL equation

We study rapidity gaps between jets in ppbar collisions at the Tevatron by a novel solution of the nonforward BFKL equation including nonleading effects through the consistency constraint and running coupling. Results differ from earlier calculations based on the asymptotic Mueller-Tang formula, but agree with D0 data when including full event simulation using PYTHIA to model the gap survival probability.

Soft Color Interactions and Diffractive Hard Scattering at the Fermilab Tevatron

An improved understanding of nonperturbative QCD can be obtained by the recently developed soft color interaction models. Their essence is the variation of color string-field topologies, giving a unified description of final states in high energy interactions, e.g., diffractive and nondiffractive events in ep and ppbar. Here we present a detailed study of such models (the soft color interaction model and the generalized area law model) applied to ppbar, considering also the general problem of the underlying event including beam particle remnants. With models tuned to HERA ep data, we find a good description also of Tevatron data on production of W, beauty and jets in diffractive events defined either by leading antiprotons or by one or two rapidity gaps in the forward or backward regions. We also give predictions for diffractive J/psi production where the soft exchange mechanism produces both a gap and a color singlet ccbar state in the same event. This soft color interaction approach is also compared with Pomeron-based models for diffraction, and some possibilities to experimentally discriminate between these different approaches are discussed.

Hard and soft QCD in charmonium production

We show that both hard perturbative and soft non-perturbative QCD effects are important in hadroproduction of charmonium. Observed $x_F$ and $p_\perp$ distributions of J/psi in fixed target experiments can be well described by our Monte Carlo model based on perturbative QCD and the Color Evaporation Model.

Soft remnant interactions and rapidity gaps

Soft colour exchange models give a unified description of both diffractive and non-diffractive events, such that e-p and p-pbar collider data with and without rapidity gaps are well reproduced. We show that these models also describe the new Tevatron data on diffraction based on observed leading antiprotons, which provide new information on how to treat the beam particle remnant in the Monte Carlo model.

Rapidity gaps at HERA and the Tevatron from soft colour exchanges

Models based on soft colour exchanges to rearrange colour strings in the final state provide a general framework for both diffractive and non-diffractive events in ep and hadron-hadron collisions. We study two such models and find that they can reproduce rapidity gap data from both HERA and the Tevatron. We also discuss the influence of parton cascades and multiple interactions on the results.

Non-perturbative Parton Distributions in the Proton

A model for the parton distributions in hadrons is derived from simple physical arguments leading to an analytical expression for the valence distributions. The sea parton distributions arise mainly from pions in hadronic fluctuations. Evolving from a low Q^2_0 scale with DGLAP gives the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2) in good agreement with DIS data. An extension of the model to describe intrinsic charm quarks in the proton is discussed.

Soft Colour Exchanges and the Hadronic Final State

The models for soft colour interactions and colour string re-interactions, implemented in the Monte Carlo program LEPTO, are investigated regarding hadronic final states in inclusive and diffractive deep inelastic scattering.

Soft Colour Interactions in Non-perturbative QCD

Improved understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics can be obtained in terms of soft colour exchange models. Their essence is the variation of colour string-field topologies giving a unified description of final states in high energy interactions. In particular, both events with and without large rapidity gaps are obtained in agreement with data from ep at HERA and ppbar at the Tevatron, where also the surprisingly large production rate of high-p_T charmonium and bottomonium is reproduced.

A model for parton distributions in hadrons

The non-perturbative parton distributions in hadrons are derived from simple physical arguments resulting in an analytical expression for the valence parton distributions. The sea partons arise mainly from pions in hadronic fluctuations. The model gives new insights and a good description of structure function data.

Rapidity Gaps from Colour String Topologies

Diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA and diffractive W and jet production at the Tevatron are well described by soft colour exchange models. Their essence is the variation of colour string-field topologies giving both gap and no-gap events, with a smooth transition and thereby a unified description of all final states.

A model for the parton distributions in hadrons

A simple model is presented for the parton distributions in hadrons. The parton momenta in the hadron rest frame are derived from a spherically symmetric, Gaussian, distribution having a width motivated by the Heisenberg uncertainty relation applied to the hadron size. Valence quarks and gluons originate from the `bare' hadron, while sea partons arise mainly from pions in hadronic fluctuations. Starting from a low Q^2 scale, the distributions are evolved with next-to-leading order DGLAP and give the proton structure function F2(x,Q^2) in good agreement with deep inelastic scattering data.

Quarkonium Production at the Tevatron through Soft Colour Interactions

The direct charmonium and bottomonium production rate observed at high-pt in pp-bar collisions at the Tevatron is factors of ten larger than predictions based on conventional perturbative QCD. We show that this excess can be accounted for by our model for soft colour interactions, previously introduced to describe in a novel way the large rapidity gap events observed at HERA.

Properties of HERA Events from DIS on Pions in the Proton

Recently the concept of the pion cloud in the nucleon turned out to be successful in understanding the Gottfried sum rule violation observed by the New Muon Collaboration and the Drell--Yan asymmetry measured in NA51 at CERN. We propose a further possibility to test this concept at HERA through the analysis of the structure of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events induced by pion--exchange. Momentum and energy distributions of outgoing nucleons as well as rapidity and multiplicity distributions are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Most observables cannot distinguish this process from ordinary DIS, but in the energy distribution of final neutrons we find a significantly different prediction from the pion cloud model. Forward neutron calorimeters will be essential to test the concept of pions in the nucleon.

MAJOR 1.5 - A Monte Carlo Generator for Heavy Majorana Neutrinos in $ep$ Collisions

The Monte Carlo generator {\sc Major} 1.5 simulates the production and decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos via lepton mixing or exchange of `light' right-handed $W$-bosons in deep inelastic scattering, i.e. $e^{\pm} p \rightarrow {N} X \rightarrow{e}^{\pm} W^{\mp} X$ or $ν_e Z X$. Physics and programming aspects are described in this manual.

AROMA 2.2 - A Monte Carlo Generator for Heavy Flavour Events in $ep$ Collisions

A program to simulate the production of heavy quarks through the boson-gluon fusion process in $e^{\pm}p$ collisions is presented. The full electro\-weak structure of the electron--gluon interaction is taken into account as well as the masses of the produced heavy quarks. Higher order QCD radiation is treated using initial and final state parton showers, and hadronization is performed using the Lund string model. Physics and programming aspects are described in this manual.

LEPTO 6.5 - A Monte Carlo Generator for Deep Inelastic Lepton-Nucleon Scattering

Physics and programming aspects are discussed for a Fortran 77 Monte Carlo program to simulate complete events in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering. The parton level interaction is based on the standard model electroweak cross sections, which are fully implemented in leading order for any lepton of arbitrary polarization, and different parametrizations of parton density functions can be used. First order QCD matrix elements for gluon radiation and boson-gluon fusion are implemented and higher order QCD radiation is treated using parton showers. Hadronization is performed using the Lund string model, implemented in {\sc Jetset}/{\sc Pythia}. Rapidity gap events are generated through a model based on soft colour interactions.

Unified Description of Rapidity Gaps and Energy Flows in DIS Final States

We show that the `orthogonal' characteristics of the observed rapidity gaps and large forward energy flows in deep inelastic scattering at HERA, can be described within a single framework. Our Monte Carlo model is based on perturbative QCD matrix elements and parton showers together with Lund string model hadronization, but has in addition a new mechanism for soft colour interactions which modifies the perturbative colour structure and thereby the hadronization. Effects of perturbative multiparton emission are investigated and the non-perturbative treatment of the proton remnant is discussed and comparison to the observed transverse energy flow is made. We investigate the resulting diffractive-like properties of the model; such as rapidity gap events, $t$- and $M_X$-distributions and the diffractive structure function in comparison to H1 data.

Particle Production in the Interstellar Medium

The flux of neutrinos and photons originating from cosmic ray interactions with the interstellar medium in the galaxy is calculated based on current models for high energy particle interactions. The contribution from a possible dark matter halo of the galaxy is considered. The photon flux gets a non-trivial attenuation due to interactions with the cosmic background radiation. The neutrino fluxes are compared with those originating from the Earth's atmosphere as well as from active galactic nuclei.
