The Okubo-Weiss Criteria in Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic and Magnetohydrodynamic Flows

The Okubo [2]-Weiss [3] criterion is recast by using the 2D hydrodynamic Beltrami condition (Shivamoggi et al.[13]) that approximates the slow flow-variation ansatz imposed in its derivation. This turns out to provide an interesting interpretation of the Okubo-Weiss criterion very logically in terms of the topological properties of the underlying vorticity manifold. These developments are then extended to 2D quasi-geostrophic flows (via the potential divorticity framework), magnetohydrodynamic flows and electron magnetohydrodynamic flows (via the generalized magnetic flux framework) and the Okubo-Weiss criteria for these cases are considered.

Analysis of linear and nonlinear conductivity of plasma-like systems on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation

The problems of high linear conductivity in an electric field, as well as nonlinear conductivity, are considered for plasma-like systems. First, we recall several observations of nonlinear fast charge transport in dusty plasma, molecular chains, lattices, conducting polymers and semiconductor layers. Exploring the role of noise we introduce the generalized Fokker-Planck equation. Second, one-dimensional models are considered on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation with active and passive velocity-dependent friction including an external electrical field. On this basis it is possible to find the linear and nonlinear conductivities for electrons and other charged particles in a homogeneous external field. It is shown that the velocity dependence of the friction coefficient can lead to an essential increase of the electron average velocity and the corresponding conductivity in comparison with the usual model of constant friction, which is described by the Drude-type conductivity. Applications including novel forms of controlled charge transfer and non-Ohmic conductance are discussed.

Aharonov--Bohm effect, electrodynamics postulates, and Lorentz condition

The problem of the relation between the Ahronov-Bohm effect and traditional postulates of electrodynamics, which claim that only electric and magnetic fields are observable, is resolved by denial of the statement about validity of the Maxwell equations for microscopic fields. We proceed from the idea that the Maxwell equations, as the generalization of experimental data, are valid only for averaged values. We show that microscopic electrodynamics should be based on postulation of the d'Alembert equations for four-vector of the electromagnetic field potential. The Lorentz condition is valid only for the averages and provides the implementation of the Maxwell equations for averages. This concept eliminates the problem of electromagnetic field quantization and provides the correctness of all known results of quantum electrodynamics. Therefore, the "virtuality" of the longitudinal and scalar photons has a formal mathematical character, conditioned by the Maxwell equations for averaged fields. The longitudinal and scalar photons provide not only the Coulomb interaction of charged particles, but also allow the electrical Aharonov-Bohm effect.

On the Necessary Conditions for the Validity of the Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem

It is shown that the Hohenberg-Kohn lemma and theorem are direct consequences of the statement that the ground state energy (or free energy) of a system of interacting particles in an external field is a unique functional of the potential of this field. This means that, if the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is valid, the nonuniform density in the equilibrium system and the external field potential are biunique functionals. In this case, the nonuniform density is intimately related to the inverse response function. On this basis, a regular procedure can be constructed for determining the density functional for the free energy or ground state energy.

Diffusion in a Time-dependent External Field

The problem of diffusion in a time-dependent (and generally inhomogeneous) external field is considered on the basis of a generalized master equation with two times, introduced in [1,2]. We consider the case of the quasi Fokker-Planck approximation, when the probability transition function for diffusion (PTD-function) does not possess a long tail in coordinate space and can be expanded as a function of instantaneous displacements. The more complicated case of long tails in the PTD will be discussed separately. We also discuss diffusion on the basis of hydrodynamic and kinetic equations and show the validity of the phenomenological approach. A new type of "collision" integral is introduced for the description of diffusion in a system of particles, which can transfer from a moving state to the rest state (with some waiting time distribution). The solution of the appropriate kinetic equation in the external field also confirms the phenomenological approach of the generalized master equation.

Kramers-Kronig Relations For The Dielectric Function And The Static Conductivity Of Coulomb Systems

The mutual influence of singularities of the dielectric permittivity e(q,w) in a Coulomb system in two limiting cases w tends to zero, q tends to zero, and opposite q tends to zero, w tends to zero is established. It is shown that the dielectric permittivity e(q,w) satisfies the Kramers-Kronig relations, which possesses the singularity due to a finite value of the static conductivity. This singularity is associated with the long "tails" of the time correlation functions.

On anomalous diffusion in a plasma in velocity space

The problem of anomalous diffusion in momentum space is considered for plasma-like systems on the basis of a new collision integral, which is appropriate for consideration of the probability transition function (PTF) with long tails in momentum space. The generalized Fokker-Planck equation for description of diffusion (in momentum space) of particles (ions, grains etc.) in a stochastic system of light particles (electrons, or electrons and ions, respectively) is applied to the evolution of the momentum particle distribution in a plasma. In a plasma the developed approach is also applicable to the diffusion of particles with an arbitrary mass relation, due to the small characteristic momentum transfer. The cases of an exponentially decreasing in momentum space (including the Boltzmann-like) kernel in the PT-function, as well as the more general kernels, which create the anomalous diffusion in velocity space due to the long tail in the PT-function, are considered. Effective friction and diffusion coefficients for plasma-like systems are found.

Motion of a Vortex Filament in the Local Induction Approximation: Reformulation of the Da Rios-Betchov Equations in the Extrinsic Filament Coordinate Space

In recognition of the highly non-trivial task of computation of the inverse Hasimoto transformation mapping the intrinsic geometric parameter space onto the extrinsic vortex filament coordinate space a reformulation of the Da Rios-Betchov equations in the latter space is given. The nonlinear localized vortex filament structure solution given by the present formulation is in detailed agreement with the Betchov-Hasimoto solution in the small-amplitude limit and is also in qualitative agreement with laboratory experiment observations of helical-twist solitary waves propagating on concentrated vortices in rotating fluids. The present formulation also provides for a discernible effect of the slipping motion of a vortex filament on the vortex evolution.

Divorticity and Dihelicity In Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamics

A framework is developed based on the concepts of {\it divorticity} ${\textbf B}$($\equiv\nabla\times\bfo$, $\bfo$ being the vorticity) and $\textit{dihelicity} g \lp \equiv\bfv\cdot\textbf{B}\rp$ for discussing the theoretical structure underlying two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamics. This formulation leads to the global and Lagrange invariants that could impose significant constraints on the evolution of divorticity lines in 2D hydrodynamics.

Zonal Shear Flows with a Free Surface: Hamiltonian Formulation and Linear and Nonlinear Stability

General theoretical results via a Hamiltonian formulation are developed for zonal shear flows with the inclusion of the vortex stretching effect of the deformed free surface. These results include a generalization of the Flierl-Stern-Whitehead zero angular momentum theorem} for localized nonlinear structures on or off the beta-plane, and sufficient conditions for linear and nonlinear stability in the Liapunov sense - the latter are derived via bounds on the equilibrium potential vorticity gradient.

Beltrami States for Compressible Barotropic Flows

Beltrami states for compressible barotropic flows are deduced by minimizing the total kinetic energy while keeping the total helicity constant. A Hamiltonian basis for these Beltrami states is also sketched.

Remarks on the Nyquist and Callen-Welton Theorems

The connection of the Callen-Welton and Nyquist fluctuation-dissipation relations is considered for plasma-like classical and quantum systems. The conditions for appearance of the dissipative parameters in the equilibrium current-current correlation function are investigated. The paper presents the arguments for the restrictions of the Nyquist theorem and against violation of the Callen-Welton theorem in the quantum case.

Velocity-Dependent Friction and Diffusion for Grains in Neutral Gases, Dusty Plasmas and Active Systems

A self-consistent and universal description of friction and diffusion for Brownian particles (grains) in different systems, as a gas with Boltzmann collisions, dusty plasma with ion absorption by grains, and for active particles (e.g., cells in biological systems) is suggested on the basis of the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation. Restrictions for application of the Fokker-Planck equation to the problem of velocity-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients are found. General description for this coefficient is formulated on the basis of master equation. Relation of the diffusion coefficient in the coordinate and velocity spaces is found for active (capable to transfer momentum to the ambient media) and passive particles in the framework of the Fokker-Planck equation. The problem of anomalous space diffusion is formulated on the basis of the appropriate probability transition (PT) function. The method of partial differentiation is avoided to construct the correct probability distributions for arbitrary distances, what is important for applications to different stochastic problems. Generale equation for time-dependent PT function is formulated and discussed. Generalized friction in the velocity space is determined and applied to describe the friction force itself as well as the drag force in the case of a non-zero driven ion velocity in plasmas. The negative friction due to ion scattering on grains exists and can be realized for the appropriate experimental conditions.
