Revisiting the magnetic ground states of RECo$_5$ permanent magnets

In light of recent improvements in the theory of rare earth magnets, as well as the availability of improved neutron powder diffraction data on these materials, we revisit the magnetic single-ion properties of SmCo$_5$ and the magnetic structures of YCo$_5$ and NdCo$_5$. From neutron diffraction patterns in a wide range of temperatures between 3 K and 800 K, we obtain the thermal coefficient expansion and the magnetic moment values for the latter two materials. For SmCo$_5$, we fit existing neutron spectroscopy data with a model recently used for NdCo$_5$ to obtain the crystal field parameters, which are essential to determine the low-lying energy scales that set the Hamiltonian. Our results may trigger new experimental and theoretical studies towards a new route for the realization of permanent magnets.

Inelastic neutron scattering investigation of the crystal field excitations of NdCo$_5$

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study of the crystal electric field levels in the intermetallic ferrimagnets RECo$_{5}$ (RE = Nd and Y). In NdCo$_{5}$, measurements at $5~$K reveal two levels at approximately 28.9 and 52.9 meV. Crystal field calculations including the exchange field $B_{\textrm{exc}}$ from the Co sites account for both of these, as well as the spectrum at temperatures above the spin-reorientation transition at $\sim 280$~K. In particular, it is found that both a large hexagonal crystal field parameter $A_{6}^6\langle r^6 \rangle$ and $B_{\textrm{exc}}$ are required to reproduce the data, with the latter having a much larger value than that deduced from previous computational and experimental studies. Our study sheds light on the delicate interplay of terms in the rare-earth Hamiltonian of RECo$_5$ systems, and is therefore expected to stimulate further experimental and computational work on the broader family of rare-earth permanent magnets.

Diffraction by multipoles in a 5d2 rhenium double perovskite

A recent polarized neutron diffraction experiment on the 5d2 rhenium double perovskite Ba2YReO6 held at a low temperature uncovered weak magnetic diffraction peaks. Data analysis inferred a significantly reduced Re dipole moment, and long-range order compatible with an antiferromagnet, non-collinear motif. To interpret the experimental findings, we present a model wavefunction for Re ions derived from the crystal field potential, Coulomb interaction, and spin-orbit coupling that fully respects the symmetry of the low-temperature ordered state. It is used to calculate in analytic form all multipole moments visible in neutron and resonance enhanced x-ray diffraction. A minimal model consistent with available neutron diffraction data predicts significant multipolar moments up to the hexadecapole, and, in particular, a dominant charge-like quadrupole moment. Calculated diffraction patterns embrace single crystal x-ray diffraction at the Re L-edge, and renewed neutron diffraction, to probe the presumed underlying multipolar order.

Temperature dependence of the $(π,0)$ anomaly in the excitation spectrum of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

It is well established that in the low-temperature limit, the two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice (2DQHAFSL) exhibits an anomaly in its spectrum at short-wavelengths on the zone-boundary. In the vicinity of the $(π,0)$ point the pole in the one-magnon response exhibits a downward dispersion, is heavily damped and attenuated, giving way to an isotropic continuum of excitations extending to high energies. The origin of the anomaly and the presence of the continuum are of current theoretical interest, with suggestions focused around the idea that the latter evidences the existence of spinons in a two-dimensional system. Here we present the results of neutron inelastic scattering experiments and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations on the metallo-organic compound Cu(DCOO)$_2\cdot 4$D$_2$O (CFTD), an excellent physical realisation of the 2DQHAFSL, designed to investigate how the anomaly at $(π,0)$ evolves up to finite temperatures $T/J\sim2/3$. Our data reveal that on warming the anomaly survives the loss of long-range, three-dimensional order, and is thus a robust feature of the two-dimensional system. With further increase of temperature the zone-boundary response gradually softens and broadens, washing out the $(π,0)$ anomaly. This is confirmed by a comparison of our data with the results of finite-temperature Quantum Monte Carlo simulations where the two are found to be in good accord. At lower energies, in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic zone centre, there was no significant softening of the magnetic excitations over the range of temperatures investigated.

Magnetic order and single-ion anisotropy in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$

Terbium gallium garnet (TGG), Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$, is well known for its applications in laser optics, but also exhibits complex low-temperature magnetism that is not yet fully understood. Its low-temperature magnetic order is determined by means of time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction. It is found to be a multiaxial antiferromagnet with magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ ions forming six sublattices of magnetic moments aligned parallel and anti-parallel to the $\langle100\rangle$ crystallographic directions of the cubic unit cell. The structure displays strong easy-axis anisotropy with respect to a two-fold axis of symmetry in the local orthorhombic environment of the Tb$^{3+}$ sites. The crystal-field splitting within the single-ion ground-state manifold is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples. A strong temperature dependence of the quasidoublet ground-state is observed and revised parameters of the crystal-field Hamiltonian are given. The results of bulk magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements are in good agreement with values based on the crystal-field model down to 20~K, where the onset of magnetic correlations is observed.

Putative spin-nematic phase in BaCdVO(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

We report neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the 2D spin-1/2 frustrated magnet BaCdVO(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$. At temperatures well below $T_{\sf N}\approx 1K$, we show that only 34 % of the spin moment orders in an up-up-down-down strip structure. Dominant magnetic diffuse scattering and comparison to published $μ$sr measurements indicates that the remaining 66 % is fluctuating. This demonstrates the presence of strong frustration, associated with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and points to a subtle ordering mechanism driven by magnon interactions. On applying magnetic field, we find that at $T=0.1$ K the magnetic order vanishes at 3.8 T, whereas magnetic saturation is reached only above 4.5 T. We argue that the putative high-field phase is a realization of the long-sought bond-spin-nematic state.

Role of defects in determining the magnetic ground state of ytterbium titanate

Pyrochlore systems are ideally suited to the exploration of geometrical frustration in three dimensions, and their rich phenomenology encompasses topological order and fractional excitations. Classical spin ices provide the first context in which it is possible to control emergent magnetic monopoles, and anisotropic exchange leads to even richer behaviour associated with large quantum fluctuations. Whether the magnetic ground state of Yb2Ti2O7 is a quantum spin liquid or a ferromagnetic phase induced by a Higgs transition appears to be sample dependent. Here we have determined the role of structural defects on the magnetic ground state via the diffuse scattering of neutrons. We find that oxygen vacancies stabilise the spin liquid phase and the stuffing of Ti sites by Yb suppresses it. Samples in which the oxygen vacancies have been eliminated by annealing in oxygen exhibit a transition to a ferromagnetic phase, and this is the true magnetic ground state.

Nuclear and Magnetic Structures of the Frustrated Quantum Antiferromagnet Barlowite, Cu$_{4}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr

Barlowite, Cu$_{4}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr, has attracted much attention as the parent compound of a new series of quantum spin liquid candidates, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr. While it is known to undergo a magnetic phase transition to a long-range ordered state at $T_{N} = 15$ K, there is still no consensus over either its nuclear or magnetic structures. Here, we use comprehensive powder neutron diffraction studies on deuterated samples of barlowite to demonstrate that the only space group consistent with the observed nuclear and magnetic diffraction at low-temperatures is the orthorhombic $Pnma$ space group. We furthermore conclude that the magnetic intensity at $T < T_{N}$ is correctly described by the $Pn^\prime m^\prime a$ magnetic space group, which crucially allows the ferromagnetic component observed in previous single-crystal and powder magnetisation measurements. As such, the magnetic structure of barlowite resembles that of the related material clinoatacamite, Cu$_{4}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, the parent compound of the well-known quantum spin liquid candidate hebertsmithite, ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$.

Classical Spin Nematic Transition in LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$

We present the results of a combined $^7$Li NMR and diffraction study on LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$, a member of LiGa$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Cr$_4$O$_8$ "breathing" pyrochlore family. Via specific heat and NMR measurements, we find that the complex sequence of first-order transitions observed for $x=0$ is replaced by a single, apparently second-order transition at $T_f=11$ K. Neutron and X-ray diffraction rule out both structural symmetry lowering and magnetic long-range order as the origin of this transition. Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates that the low temperature phase may be described as a collinear spin nematic state, characterized by a quadrupolar order parameter. This state also shows signs of short range order between collinear spin arrangements on tetrahedra, revealed by mapping the reverse Monte Carlo spin configurations onto a three-state color model describing the manifold of nematic states.

Fractional excitations in the square-lattice quantum antiferromagnet

The square-lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet displays a pronounced anomaly of unknown origin in its magnetic excitation spectrum. The anomaly manifests itself only for short wavelength excitations propagating along the direction connecting nearest neighbors. Using polarized neutron spectroscopy, we have fully characterized the magnetic fluctuations in the model metal-organic compound CFTD, revealing an isotropic continuum at the anomaly indicative of fractional excitations. A theoretical framework based on the Gutzwiller projection method is developed to explain the origin of the continuum at the anomaly. This indicates that the anomaly arises from deconfined fractional spin-1/2 quasiparticle pairs, the 2D analog of 1D spinons. Away from the anomaly the conventional spin-wave spectrum is recovered as pairs of fractional quasiparticles bind to form spin-1 magnons. Our results therefore establish the existence of fractional quasiparticles in the simplest model two dimensional antiferromagnet even in the absence of frustration.

From Spin Glass to Quantum Spin Liquid Ground States in Molybdate Pyrochlores

We present new magnetic heat capacity and neutron scattering results for two magnetically frustrated molybdate pyrochlores: $S=1$ oxide Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ oxynitride Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$. Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a transition to an unconventional spin glass ground state at $T_f {\sim} 16$ K. However, the preparation of the corresponding oxynitride tunes the nature of the ground state from spin glass to quantum spin liquid. The comparison of the static and dynamic spin correlations within the oxide and oxynitride phases presented here reveals the crucial role played by quantum fluctuations in the selection of a ground state. Furthermore, we estimate an upper limit for a gap in the spin excitation spectrum of the quantum spin liquid state of the oxynitride of $Δ {\sim} 0.05$ meV or ${\fracΔ{|θ|}}\sim0.004$, in units of its antiferromagnetic Weiss constant $θ {\sim}-121$ K.

Electronic structure of KTi(SO4)2.H2O - a S=1/2 frustrated chain antiferromagnet

The compound KTi(SO4)2.H2O was recently reported as a quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 compound with competing antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange J1 and next-nearest neighbor exchange J2 along the chain with a frustration ratio alpha = J2/J1 ~ 0.29 [Chem. Mater. vol. 20, pg. 8 (2008)]. Here, we report a microscopically based magnetic model for this compound derived from density functional electronic structure calculations along with respective tight-binding models. Our calculations confirm the quasi one-dimensional nature of the system with antiferromagnetic J1 and J2, but suggest a significantly larger frustration ratio alpha ~ 1.1 +- 0.2. Based on transfer matrix renormalization group calculations we found that, due to an intrinsic symmetry of the J1-J2 model, our larger frustration ratio alpha is also consistent with the previous thermodynamic data. To resolve this issue, we propose performing high-field magnetization measurements and low temperature susceptibility measurements which should allow to precisely identify the frustration ratio alpha.

Pair Correlations, Short Range Order and Dispersive Excitations in the Quasi-Kagome Quantum Magnet Volborthite

We present spatial and dynamic information on the s=1/2 distorted kagome antiferromagnet volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OD)2.2D2O, obtained by polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. The instantaneous structure factor, S(Q), is dominated by nearest neighbor pair correlations, with short range order at wave vectors Q1=0.65(3) Å^-1 and Q2=1.15(5) Å^-1 emerging below 5 K. The excitation spectrum, S(Q,ω), reveals two steep branches dispersing from Q1 and Q2, and a flat mode at ω=5.0(2) meV. The results allow us to identify the cross-over at T*=1 K in 51V NMR and specific heat measurements as the build-up of correlations at Q_1. We compare our data to theoretical models proposed for volborthite, and demonstrate that the excitation spectrum can be explained by spin-wave-like excitations with anisotropic exchange parameters, as also suggested by recent local density calculations.

Scale-free antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the S=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet herbertsmithite

Neutron spectroscopy and diffuse neutron scattering on herbertsmithite [ZnCu3 (OH)6Cl2], a near-ideal realisation of the s = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, reveal the hallmark property of a quantum spin liquid; instantaneous short-ranged antiferromagnetic correlations in the absence of a time-averaged ordered moment. These dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations are only very weakly dependent of neutron-energy transfer and temperature, and persist up to 25 meV and 120 K. At low energy transfers a shift of the magnetic scattering to low Q is observed with increasing temperature, providing evidence of gapless spinons. It is argued that these observations provide important evidence in favour of RVB theories of (doped) Mott insulators.

Determination of the single-ion anisotropy energy in a S = 5/2 kagome antiferromagnet using X-ray absorption spectroscopy

We report x-ray absorption and x-ray linear dichroism measurements at the Fe L2,3 edges of the geometrically frustrated systems of potassium and hydronium iron jarosite. Comparison with simulated spectra, involving ligand-field multiplet calculations modelling the 3d-2p hybridization between the iron ion and the oxygen ligands, has yielded accurate estimates for the ligand metal-ion hybridization and the resulting single-ion crystal field anisotropy energy. Using this method we provide an experimentally verified scenario for the appearance of a single-ion anisotropy in this nominally high-spin 3d5 orbital singlet 6S system, which accounts for features of the spin-wave dispersion in the long-range ordered ground state of potassium iron jarosite.
