Microcavity effects on the generation, fluorescence, and diffusion of excitons in organic solar cells

We compute the short-circuit diffusion current of excitons in an organic solar cell, with special emphasis on fluorescence losses. The exciton diffusion length is not uniform but varies with its position within the device, even with moderate fluorescence quantum efficiency. With large quantum efficiencies, the rate of fluorescence can be strongly reduced with proper choices of the geometrical and dielectric parameters. In this way, the diffusion length can be increased and the device performance significantly improved.

Analytical results for front pinning between an hexagonal pattern and a uniform state in pattern-formation systems

In pattern-forming systems, localized patterns are states of intermediate complexity between fully extended ordered patterns and completely irregular patterns. They are formed by stationary fronts enclosing an ordered pattern inside an homogeneous background. In two dimensions, the ordered pattern is most often hexagonal and the conditions for fronts to stabilize are still unknown. In this letter, we show how the locking of these fronts depends on their orientation relative to the pattern. The theory rests on general asymptotic arguments valid when the spatial scale of the front is slow compared to that of the hexagonal pattern. Our analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations with the Swift-Hohenberg equation, relevant to hydrodynamical and buckling instabilities, and a nonlinear optical cavity model.

Bistability between different dissipative solitons in nonlinear optics

We report the observation of different localized structures coexisting for the same parameter values in an extended system. The experimental findings are carried out in a nonlinear optical interferometer, and are fully confirmed by numerical simulations. The existence of each kind of localized structure is put in relation to a corresponding delocalized pattern observed. Quantitative evaluation of the range of pump parameter allowing bistability between localized structures is given. The dependence of the phenomena on the other relevant parameters is discussed.
