Factorization Breaking in Diffractive Dijet Photoproduction

We have calculated the diffractive dijet cross section in low-Q^2 ep scattering in the HERA regime. The results of the calculation in LO and NLO are compared to recent experimental data of the H1 collaboration. We find that in LO the calculated cross sections are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results. In NLO, however, some of the cross sections disagree, showing that factorization breaking occurs in that order. By suppressing the resolved contribution by a factor of approximately three, good agreement with all the data is found. The size of the factorization breaking effects in diffractive dijet photoproduction agrees well with absorptive model predictions.

Low x particle spectra in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation

We show that the higher moments of the evolution obtained from the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation may be regarded as spurious higher order terms in perturbation theory, and that neglecting them leads to a good description of the data around and above the peak in $ξ=\ln (1/x)$. Furthermore, we use this study of the moments to show that at high energy the Limiting Spectrum with Local Parton-Hadron Duality may also be derived from the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation without any non-perturbative assumptions.

The Evolution of Hadron Spectra in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation

We perform fits of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ and the gluon fragmentation function $D(x,Q)$ at initial scale $Q_0 \ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$ to charged light hadron momentum spectra data by evolving in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation. Without additional assumptions, we achieve a good description of the available data for $ξ=\ln(1/x)$ up to and around the Gaussian peak, and values of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ acceptably close to those in the literature. In particular, we find that this procedure describes the position of the peak, and, in contrast to the Limiting Spectrum, also the normalization.

chi_{c1} and chi_{c2} decay angular distributions at the Fermilab Tevatron

We consider the hadroproduction of chi_{c1} and chi_{c2} mesons and their subsequent radiative decays to J/psi mesons and photons in the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, and study the decay angular distributions, by means of helicity density matrices, in view of their sensitivity to color-octet processes. We present numerical results appropriate for the Fermilab Tevatron.

Inclusive D* production in gamma-gamma collisions: including the single-resolved contribution with massive quarks

We have calculated the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks as a function of the transverse momentum p_T and the rapidity in two approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the single-resolved cross section we have derived the massless limit from the massive theory. We find that this limit differs from the genuine massless version with MS-bar factorization by finite corrections. By adjusting subtraction terms we establish a massive theory with MS-bar subtraction which approaches the massless theory very fast with increasing transverse momentum. With these results and including the equivalent results for the direct cross section obtained previously as well as double-resolved contributions, we calculate the inclusive D*+- cross section in gamma-gamma collisions using realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions and compare with recent data from the LEP collaborations ALEPH, L3 and OPAL. We find good agreement.

B0 - B0 bar mixing, B -> J/psi K_S and B -> X_d gamma in general MSSM

We consider the gluino-mediated SUSY contributions to B0 - B0 bar mixing, B -> J/psi K_S and B -> X_d gamma in the mass insertion approximation. We find the LL mixing parameter can be as large as |delta_{13}^d_{LL}| < 2*10^-1, but the LR mixing is strongly constrained by the B -> X_d gamma branching ratio and we find |delta_{13}^d_{LR}| < 10^-2. The implications for the direct CP asymmetry in B -> X_d gamma and the dilepton charge asymmetry (A_{ll}) are also discussed, where substantial deviations from the standard model predictions are possible.

Polarization Effects in B -> K_1(1270) + J/ΨDecays

The joint angular distribution of the decay B \to J/ΨV, where V is an axial vector or vector resonance, followed by the subsequent decay processes of the J/Ψand V is calculated using the covariant density method. In particular, the case where V is the axial vector meson K_1(1270) which decays into K ρis considered as well as the case that V is the vector meson K^\ast(890) which decays into K π.

Inclusive D* Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order QCD

The next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks in gamma-gamma collisions is calculated as a function of the transverse momentum pT and the rapidity y in approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the direct cross section we derive the massless limit from the massive theory with the result that this limit differs from the massless version with MSbar factorization by finite corrections. Subtracting or adding these corrections allows us to compare the two approaches on equal footing. We establish massless and massive versions with 3 and 4 initial flavours which are shown to approach the massless approximations very fast with increasing pT. With these results we calculate the inclusive D* cross section in gamma-gamma collisions using realistic evolved fragmentation functions with appropriate factorization scales and compare with recent data for dsigma/dpT from three LEP collaborations after single- and double-resolved contributions have been added.

Testing the Universality of Fragmentation Functions

Using fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and (anti)protons recently extracted from experimental data of e^+e^- annihilation at the Z-boson resonance and at centre-of-mass energy root(s) = 29 GeV, we perform a global study of inclusive charged-hadron production in p anti-p, gamma p, and gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics. Comparisons of our results with p anti-p data from CERN S p anti-p S and the Fermilab Tevatron, gamma p data from DESY HERA, and gamma gamma data from CERN LEP2 allow us to test the universality of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. Furthermore, we perform comparisons with (e^+e^-)-annihilation data from LEP2 so as to test the scaling violations predicted by the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations.

Fragmentation Functions for Pions, Kaons, and Protons at Next-to-Leading Order

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and protons, both at the leading and next-to-leading orders. They are fitted to the scaled-momentum distributions of these hadrons measured in e+e- annihilation on the Z-boson resonance at CERN LEP1 and SLAC SLC. These data partly come as light-, charm-, bottom-quark-enriched and gluon-jet samples, which allows us to treat all partons independently, after imposing the SU(2) flavour symmetry relations. In order to gain sensitivity to the scaling violation in fragmentation, we also include data from SLAC PEP, with center-of-mass energy root(s)=29 GeV, in our fits. This allows us to also determine the strong-coupling constant, with a competitive error. LEP1 data on the longitudinal cross section as well as DESY DORIS and PETRA data at lower energies nicely agree with theoretical predictions based on our fragmentation functions.

Strong Coupling Constant from Scaling Violations in Fragmentation Functions

We present a new determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s through the scaling violations in the fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and protons. In our fit we include the latest e+e- annihilation data from CERN LEP1 and SLAC SLC on the Z-boson resonance and older, yet very precise data from SLAC PEP at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=29 GeV. A new world average of alpha_s is given.

The production of a hard and isolated photon accompanied by one or two jets in large-Q2 deep inelastic ep scattering is calculated at next-to-leading order. We include consistently contributions from quark-to-photon fragmentation and study various differential cross sections and their dependence on isolation cut parameters. Numerical results relevant for HERA experiments are presented.

Photon Fragmentation in Large-Q2 ep Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order QCD

We study the production of photons accompanied by jets in large-Q2 deep inelastic scattering. Numerical results for the cross section differential with respect to the fraction of momentum z_gamma carried by a photon inside a jet at large z_gamma, up to O(alpha alpha_s) in perturbative QCD, are presented. The sensitivity to the fragmentation contribution allows one to study the quark-to-photon fragmentation function. Our results can be confronted with future experimental data from HERA.
