Incorporating Memory Effects in Phase Separation Processes

We consider the modification of the Cahn-Hilliard equation when a time delay process through a memory function is taken into account. We then study the process of spinodal decomposition in fast phase transitions associated with a conserved order parameter. Finite-time memory effects are seen to affect the dynamics of phase transition at short times and have the effect of delaying, in a significant way, the process of rapid growth of the order parameter that follows a quench into the spinodal region. These effects are important in several systems characterized by fast processes, like nonequilibrium dynamics in the early universe and in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Back-to-Back Correlations for Finite Expanding Fireballs

Back-to-Back Correlations of particle-antiparticle pairs are related to the in-medium mass-modification and squeezing of the quanta involved. They are predicted to appear when hot and dense hadronic matter is formed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The survival and magnitude of the Back-to-Back Correlations of boson-antiboson pairs generated by in-medium mass modifications are studied here in the case of a thermalized, finite-sized, spherically symmetric expanding medium. We show that the BBC signal indeed survives the finite-time emission, as well as the expansion and flow effects, with sufficient intensity to be observed at RHIC.

Survival of Back-to-Back Correlations for Finite Expanding Fireballs

Back-to-Back Correlations (BBC) of particle-antiparticle pairs are predicted to appear if hot and dense hadronic matter is formed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The BBC correlations are related to in-medium mass-modification and squeezing of the quanta involved. The formalisms are analogous in the bosonic (bBBC) and in the fermionic (fBBC) cases. Both the bBBC and the fBBC are positive and unlimited correlations of similar strength. For testing the survival and the intensity of the effect in a more realistic situation, we study the back-to-back correlations for mass-modification occurring in a finite sized, thermalized medium. For illustration, we consider a non-relativistically expanding fireball with finite emission time. We show that the BBC signal indeed survives the expansion and flow effects, with sufficient magnitude to be observed at RHIC.

Phi-Phi Back-to-Back Correlations in Finite Expanding Systems

Back-to-Back Correlations (BBC) of particle-antiparticle pairs are predicted to appear if hot and dense hadronic matter is formed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The BBC are related to in-medium mass-modification and squeezing of the quanta involved. Although the suppression of finite emission times were already known, the effects of finite system sizes and of collective phenomena had not been studied yet. Thus, for testing the survival and magnitude of the effect in more realistic situations, we study the BBC when mass-modification occurs in a finite sized, thermalized medium, considering a non-relativistically expanding fireball with finite emission time, and evaluating the width of the back-to-back correlation function. We show that the BBC signal indeed survives the expansion and flow effects, with sufficient magnitude to be observed at RHIC.

Can dissipation prevent explosive decomposition in high-energy heavy ion collisions?

We discuss the role of dissipation in the explosive spinodal decomposition scenario of hadron production during the chiral transition after a high-energy heavy ion collision. We use a Langevin description inspired by microscopic nonequilibrium field theory results to perform real-time lattice simulations of the behavior of the chiral fields. We show that the effect of dissipation can be dramatic. Analytic results for the short-time dynamics are also presented.

Studying nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering using a decomposition method

Nonlinear effects on the early stage of phase ordering are studied using Adomian's decomposition method for the Ginzburg-Landau equation for a nonconserved order parameter. While the long-time regime and the linear behavior at short times of the theory are well understood, the onset of nonlinearities at short times and the breaking of the linear theory at different length scales are less understood. In the Adomian's decomposition method, the solution is systematically calculated in the form of a polynomial expansion for the order parameter, with a time dependence given as a series expansion. The method is very accurate for short times, which allows to incorporate the short-time dynamics of the nonlinear terms in a analytical and controllable way.

Hadronic current correlation functions at finite temperature in the NJL model

Recently there have been suggestions that for a proper description of hadronic matter and hadronic correlation functions within the NJL model at finite density/temperature the parameters of the model should be taken density/temperature dependent. Here we show that qualitatively similar results can be obtained using a cutoff-independent regularization of the NJL model. In this regularization scheme one can express the divergent parts at finite density/temperature of the amplitudes in terms of their counterparts in vacuum.

Influence of a Z+(1540) resonance on K+N scattering

The impact of a (I=0, J^P=1/2^+) Z^+(1540) resonance with a width of 5 MeV or more on the K+N (I=0) elastic cross section and on the P01 phase shift is examined within the KN meson-exchange model of the Juelich group. It is shown that the rather strong enhancement of the cross section caused by the presence of a Z^+ with the above properties is not compatible with the existing empirical information on KN scattering. Only a much narrower Z^+ state could be reconciled with the existing data -- or, alternatively, the Z^+ state must lie at an energy much closer to the KN threshold.

Warm asymmetric matter in the Quark Meson Coupling Model

In this work we study the warm equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter in the quark meson coupling model which incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom, with quarks coupled to scalar, vector and isovector mesons. Mechanical and chemical instabilities are discussed as a function of density and isospin asymmetry. The binodal section, essential in the study of the liquid-gas phase transition is also constructed and discussed. The main results for the equation of state are compared with two common parametrizations used in the non-linear Walecka model and the differences are outlined.

Compositeness Effects in the Bose-Einstein Condensation

Small deviations from purely bosonic behavior of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated with the help of the quon algebra, which interpolates between bosonic and fermionic statistics. A previously developed formalism is employed to obtain a generalized version of the Gross-Pitaeviskii equation. Two extreme situations are considered, the collapse of the condensate for attractive forces and the depletion of the amount of condensed atoms with repulsive forces. Experimental discrepancies observed in the parameters governing the collapse and the depletion of the condensates can be accounted for by universal fittings of the deformation parameter for each case.

Short-range repulsion and isospin dependence in the KN system

The short-range properties of the KN interaction are studied within the meson-exchange model of the Juelich group. Specifically, dynamical explanations for the phenomenological short-range repulsion, required in this model for achieving agreement with the empirical KN data, are explored. Evidence is found that contributions from the exchange of a heavy scalar-isovector meson (a_0(980)) as well as from genuine quark-gluon exchange processes are needed. Taking both mechanisms into account a satisfactory description of the KN phase shifts can be obtained without resorting to phenomenological pieces.

Equation of state of quark-nuclear matter

Quark-nuclear matter (QNM) is a many-body system containing hadrons and deconfined quarks. Starting from a microscopic quark-meson coupling (QMC) Hamiltonian with a density dependent quark-quark interaction, an effective quark-hadron Hamiltonian is constructed via a mapping procedure. The mapping is implemented with a unitary operator such that composites are redescribed by elementary-particle field operators that satisfy canonical commutation relations in an extended Fock space. Application of the unitary operator to the microscopic Hamiltonian leads to effective, hermitian operators that have a clear physical interpretation. At sufficiently high densities, the effective Hamiltonian contains interactions that lead to quark deconfinement. The equation of state of QNM is obtained using standard many-body techniques with the effective quark-hadron Hamiltonian. At low densities, the model is equivalent to a QMC model with confined quarks. Beyond a critical density, when quarks start to deconfine, the equation of state predicted for QNM is softer than the QMC equation of state with confined quarks.

Excluded Volume Effects in the Quark Meson Coupling Model

Excluded volume effects are incorporated in the quark meson coupling model to take into account in a phenomenological way the hard core repulsion of the nuclear force. The formalism employed is thermodynamically consistent and does not violate causality. The effects of the excluded volume on in-medium nucleon properties and the nuclear matter equation of state are investigated as a function of the size of the hard core. It is found that in-medium nucleon properties are not altered significantly by the excluded volume, even for large hard core radii, and the equation of state becomes stiffer as the size of the hard core increases.

Charmonium - Pion Cross Section from QCD Sum Rules

The $J/ψπ\to \bar{D} D^*, \bar{D} D$, ${\bar D}^* D^*$ and ${\bar D} D^*$ cross sections as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ are evaluated in a QCD sum rule calculation. We study the Borel sum rule for the four point function involving pseudoscalar and vector meson currents, up to dimension four in the operator product expansion. We find that our results are smaller than the $J/ψπ\to {charmed mesons}$ cross sections obtained with models based on meson exchange, but are close to those obtained with quark exchange models.

Chiral corrections to baryon properties with composite pions

A calculational scheme is developed to evaluate chiral corrections to properties of composite baryons with composite pions. The composite baryons and pions are bound states derived from a microscopic chiral quark model. The model is amenable to standard many-body techniques such as the BCS and RPA formalisms. An effective chiral model involving only hadronic degrees of freedom is derived from the macroscopic quark model by projection onto hadron states. Chiral loops are calculated using the effective hadronic Hamiltonian. A simple microscopic confining interaction is used to illustrate the derivation of the pion-nucleon form factor and the calculation of pionic self-energy corrections to the nucleon and Delta(1232) masses.

Squeezed Fermions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Colliders

Large back-to-back correlations of observable fermion -- anti-fermion pairs are predicted to appear, if the mass of the fermions is modified in a thermalized medium. The back-to-back correlations of protons and anti-protons are experimentally observable in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, similarly to the Andreev reflection of electrons off the boundary of a superconductor. While quantum statistics suppresses the probability of observing pairs of fermions with nearby momenta, the fermionic back-to-back correlations are positive and of similar strength to bosonic back-to-back correlations.

Long- and medium-range components of the nuclear force in quark-model based calculations

Quark-model descriptions of the nucleon-nucleon interaction contain two main ingredients, a quark-exchange mechanism for the short-range repulsion and meson-exchanges for the medium- and long-range parts of the interaction. We point out the special role played by higher partial waves, and in particular the 1F3, as a very sensitive probe for the meson-exchange part employed in these interaction models. In particular, we show that the presently available models fail to provide a reasonable description of higher partial waves and indicate the reasons for this shortcoming.
