Higher-Order Nuclear-Polarizability Corrections in Atomic Hydrogen

Nuclear-polarizability corrections that go beyond unretarded-dipole approximation are calculated analytically for hydrogenic (atomic) S-states. These retardation corrections are evaluated numerically for deuterium and contribute -0.68 kHz, for a total polarization correction of 18.58(7) kHz. Our results are in agreement with one previous numerical calculation, and the retardation corrections completely account for the difference between two previous calculations. The uncertainty in the deuterium polarizability correction is substantially reduced. At the level of 0.01 kHz for deuterium, only three primary nuclear observables contribute: the electric polarizability, $α_E$, the paramagnetic susceptibility, $β_M$, and the third Zemach moment, $< r^3 >_{(2)}$. Cartesian multipole decomposition of the virtual Compton amplitude and its concomitant gauge sum rules are used in the analysis.

Assessment of Triton Potential Energy

An assessment is made of the dominant features contributing to the triton potential energy, with the objective of understanding qualitatively their origins and sensitivities. Relativistic effects, short-range repulsion, and OPEP dominance are discussed. A determination of the importance of various regions of nucleon-nucleon separation is made numerically.

Inversion Potential Analysis of the Nuclear Dynamics in the Triton

We report 3H binding energy calculations using inversion potentials generated from phase shifts corresponding to contemporary nucleon-nucleon potentials as well as modern phase shift analyses. We place limits upon local potential triton binding energy calculations due to the underlying uncertainties in their fit to the nucleon-nucleon phase shifts: 7.7 +/- 0.2 MeV. We explore the role of the nonlocality of momentum dependent potentials in the triton binding energy. In particular, we find the additional binding energy in the case of the Bonn-B potential is due to a long range nonlocality, which may correspond to a three-nucleon force when the Hamiltonian is restricted to local interactions.

Triton calculations with the new Nijmegen potentials

Triton properties are calculated using new nucleon-nucleon potentials, which were fit to the world nucleon-nucleon data. All potentials are charge dependent and explicitly incorporate the mass difference between the charged and neutral pions. Three of these models have a nearly optimal chi**2 per degree of freedom and can therefore be considered as alternative partial wave analyses, which in quality can almost compete with the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis. The triton binding energy obtained with three local models (Nijm II, Reid93, AV18) can be summarized as 7.62 +_ 0.01 MeV, which is nearly 900 keV lower than experiment. The non-local model Nijm I binds by 7.72 MeV.
