Numerical Jordan-Wigner approach for two dimensional spin systems

We present a numerical self consistent variational approach based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation for two dimensional spin systems. We apply it to the study of the well known quantum (S=1/2) antiferromagnetic XXZ system as a function of the easy-axis anisotropy Δon a periodic square lattice. For the SU(2) case the method converges to a Néel ordered ground state irrespectively of the input density profile used and in accordance with other studies. This shows the potential utility of the proposed method to investigate more complicated situations like frustrated or disordered systems.

On planar fermions with quartic interaction at finite temperature and density

We study the breaking of parity symmetry in the 2+1 Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature with chemical potential $μ$, in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that the requirement of gauge invariance, which is considered mandatory in the presence of gauge fields, breaks parity at any finite temperature and provides for dynamical mass generation, preventing symmetry restoration for any non-vanishing $μ$. The dynamical mass becomes negligibly small as temperature is raised. We comment on the relevance of our observation for the gap generation of nodal quasi-particles in the pseudo-gap phase of high $T_c$ superconductors.

Non-perturbative effective field theory for two-leg antiferromagnetic spin ladders

We study the long wavelength limit of a spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic two-leg ladder, treating the interchain coupling in a non-perturbative way. We perform a mean field analysis and then include exactly the fluctuations. This allows for a discussion of the phase diagram of the system and provides an effective field theory for the low energy excitations. The coset fermionic Lagrangian obtained corresponds to a perturbed SU(4)_1/U(1) Conformal Field Theory (CFT). This effective theory is naturally embedded in a SU(2)_2 x Z_2 CFT, where perturbations are easily identified in terms of conformal operators in the two sectors. Crossed and zig-zag ladders are also discussed using the same approach.

Transition from Abelian to non-Abelian FQHE states

We study the transition from the Abelian multi-component (3,3,1) quantum Hall state to the non-Abelian one component Pfaffian state in bilayer two dimensional electron systems. We show that tunneling between layers can induce this transition. At the transition points part of the degrees of freedom that describe the (3,3,1) state disappear from the spectrum, and the system is correctly described by the Pfaffian state, with quasi-particles that satisfy non-Abelian statistics. The mechanism described in this work provides for a physical Hamiltonian interpretation of the algebraic projection from the (3,3,1) to the Pfaffian state that has been discussed in the literature.

Non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states and chiral coset conformal field theories

We propose an effective Lagrangian for the low energy theory of the Pfaffian states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the bulk in terms of non-Abelian Chern-Simons (CS) actions. Our approach exploits the connection between the topological Chern-Simons theory and chiral conformal field theories. This construction can be used to describe a large class of non-Abelian FQH states.

Induced Parity Breaking Term in Arbitrary Odd Dimensions at Finite Temperature

We calculate the exact parity odd part of the effective action ($Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$) for massive Dirac fermions in 2d+1 dimensions at finite temperature, for a certain class of gauge field configurations. We consider first Abelian external gauge fields, and then we deal with the case of a non-Abelian gauge group containing an Abelian U(1) subgroup. For both cases, it is possible to show that the result depends on topological invariants of the gauge field configurations, and that the gauge transformation properties of $Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$ depend only on those invariants and on the winding number of the gauge transformation.

Induced Parity Breaking Term at Finite Temperature

We compute the exact induced parity-breaking part of the effective action for 2+1 massive fermions in $QED_3$ at finite temperature by calculating the fermion determinant in a particular background. The result confirms that gauge invariance of the effective action is respected even when large gauge transformations are considered.

The $ζ$-function answer to parity violation in three dimensional gauge theories

We study parity violation in $2+1$-dimensional gauge theories coupled to massive fermions. Using the $ζ$-function regularization approach we evaluate the ground state fermion current in an arbitrary gauge field background, showing that it gets two different contributions which violate parity invariance and induce a Chern-Simons term in the gauge-field effective action. One is related to the well-known {\em classical} parity breaking produced by a fermion mass term in 3 dimensions; the other one, already present for massless fermions, is related to peculiarities of gauge invariant regularization in odd-dimensional spaces.

Parity Violation in the Three Dimensional Thirring Model

We discuss parity violation in the 3-dimensional (N flavour) Thirring model. We find that the ground state fermion current in a background gauge field does not posses a well defined parity transformation. We also investigate the connection between parity violation and fermion mass generation, proving that radiative corrections force the fermions to be massive.

Fermionic Coset Models as Topological Models

By considering the fermionic realization of $G/H$ coset models, we show that the partition function for the $U(1)/U(1)$ model defines a Topological Quantum Field Theory and coincides with that for a 2-dimensional Abelian BF system. In the non-Abelian case, we prove the topological character of $G/G$ coset models by explicit computation, also finding a natural extension of 2-dimensional BF systems with non-Abelian symmetry.

Stochastic Quantization of the Chern-Simons Theory

We discuss Stochastic Quantization of $d$=3 dimensional non-Abelian Chern-Simons theory. We demonstrate that the introduction of an appropriate regulator in the Langevin equation yields a well-defined equilibrium limit, thus leading to the correct propagator. We also analyze the connection between $d$=3 Chern-Simons and $d$=4 Topological Yang-Mills theories showing the equivalence between the corresponding regularized partition functions. We study the construction of topological invariants and the introduction of a non-trivial kernel as an alternative regularization.
