Multifractal Magnetoconductance Fluctuations in Mesoscopic Systems

We perform a multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis of the magnetoconductance data of two standard types of mesoscopic systems: a disordered nanowire and a ballistic chaotic billiard, with two different lattice structures. We observe in all cases that multifractality is generally present and that it becomes stronger in the quantum regime of conduction, i.e., when the number of open scattering channels is small. We argue that this behavior originates from correlations induced by the magnetic field, which can be characterized through the distribution of conductance increments in the corresponding "stochastic time series," with the magnetic field playing the role of a fictitious time. More specifically, we show that the distributions of conductance increments are well fitted by $q$ Gaussians and that the value of the parameter $q$ is a useful quantitative measure of multifractality in magnetoconductance fluctuations.

Emergence of skewed non-Gaussian distributions of velocity increments in isotropic turbulence

Skewness and non-Gaussian behavior are essential features of the distribution of short-scale velocity increments in isotropic turbulent flows. Yet, although the skewness has been generally linked to time-reversal symmetry breaking and vortex stretching, the form of the asymmetric heavy tails remain elusive. Here we describe the emergence of both properties through an exactly solvable stochastic model with a scale hierarchy of energy transfer rates. From a statistical superposition of a local equilibrium distribution weighted by a background density, the increments distribution is given by a novel class of skewed heavy-tailed distributions, written as a generalization of the Meijer $G$-functions. Excellent agreement in the multiscale scenario is found with numerical data of systems with different sizes and Reynolds numbers. Remarkably, the single scale limit provides poor fits to the background density, highlighting the central role of the multiscale mechanism. Our framework can be also applied to describe the challenging emergence of skewed distributions in complex systems.

Heat distribution in open quantum systems with maximum entropy production

We analyze the heat exchange distribution of quantum open systems undergoing a thermal relaxation that maximizes the entropy production. We show that the process implies a type of generalized law of cooling in terms of a time dependent effective temperature $T_t$. Using a two-point measurement scheme, we find an expression for the heat moment generating function that depends solely on the system's partition function and on the law of cooling. Applications include the relaxation of free bosonic and fermionic modes, for which closed form expressions for the time-dependent heat distribution function are derived. Multiple free modes with arbitrary dispersion relations are also briefly discussed. In the semiclassical limit our formula agrees well with previous results of the literature for the heat distribution of an optically trapped nanoscopic particle far from equilibrium.

Vortex motion around a circular cylinder above a plane

The study of vortex flows around solid obstacles is of considerable interest from both a theoretical and practical perspective. One geometry that has attracted renewed attention recently is that of vortex flows past a circular cylinder placed above a plane wall, where a stationary recirculating eddy can form in front of the cylinder, in contradistinction to the usual case (without the plane boundary) for which a vortex pair appears behind the cylinder. Here we analyze the problem of vortex flows past a cylinder near a wall through the lenses of the point-vortex model. By conformally mapping the fluid domain onto an annular region in an auxiliary complex plane, we compute the vortex Hamiltonian analytically in terms of certain special functions related to elliptic theta functions. A detailed analysis of the equilibria of the model is then presented. The location of the equilibrium in front of the cylinder is shown to be in qualitative agreement with the experimental findings. We also show that a topological transition occurs in phase space as the parameters of the systems are varied

Universality Classes of Fluctuation Dynamics in Hierarchical Complex Systems

A unified approach is proposed to describe the statistics of the short time dynamics of multiscale complex systems. The probability density function of the relevant time series (signal) is represented as a statistical superposition of a large time-scale distribution weighted by the distribution of certain internal variables that characterize the slowly changing background. The dynamics of the background is formulated as a hierarchical stochastic model whose form is derived from simple physical constraints, which in turn restrict the dynamics to only two possible classes. The probability distributions of both the signal and the background have simple representations in terms of Meijer G-functions. The two universality classes for the background dynamics manifest themselves in the signal distribution as two types of tails: power law and stretched exponential, respectively. A detailed analysis of empirical data from classical turbulence and financial markets shows excellent agreement with the theory.

Four-vortex motion around a circular cylinder

The motion of two pairs of counter-rotating point vortices placed in a uniform flow past a circular cylinder is studied analytically and numerically. When the dynamics is restricted to the symmetric subspace---a case that can be realized experimentally by placing a splitter plate in the center plane---, it is found that there is a family of linearly stable equilibria for same-signed vortex pairs. The nonlinear dynamics in the symmetric subspace is investigated and several types of orbits are presented. The analysis reported here provides new insights and reveals novel features of this four-vortex system, such as the fact that there is no equilibrium for two pairs of vortices of opposite signs on the opposite sides of the cylinder. (It is argued that such equilibria might exist for vortex flows past a cylinder confined in a channel.) In addition, a new family of opposite-signed equilibria on the normal line is reported. The stability analysis for antisymmetric perturbations is also carried out and it shows that all equilibria are unstable in this case.

Multicanonical distribution and the origin of power laws

A multicanonical formalism is applied to the problem of statistical equilibrium in a complex system with a hierarchy of dynamical structures. At the small scales the system is in quasi-equilibrium and follows a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with a slowly fluctuating temperature. The probability distribution for the temperature is determined using Bayesian analysis and it is then used to average the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The resulting energy distribution law is written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, which display power-law tails.

Vortex flow around a circular cylinder above a plane

The study of vortex flows in the vicinity of multiple solid obstacles is of considerable theoretical interest and practical importance. In particular, the case of flows past a circular cylinder placed above a plane wall has attracted a lot of attention recently. In this case, a stationary vortex is formed in front of the cylinder, in contradistinction to the usual case without the plane where a vortex pair is observed behind the cylinder. In the present work, we apply modern complex analysis techniques to obtain the complex potential for the problem of one point-vortex placed in a uniform stream past a circular cylinder above a plane. A typical streamline pattern is also shown.

Vortex motion around a circular cylinder

The motion of a pair of counter-rotating point vortices placed in a uniform flow around a circular cylinder forms a rich nonlinear system that is often used to model vortex shedding. The phase portrait of the Hamiltonian governing the dynamics of a vortex pair that moves symmetrically with respect to the centerline---a case that can be realized experimentally by placing a splitter plate in the center plane---is presented. The analysis provides new insights and reveals novel dynamical features of the system, such as a nilpotent saddle point at infinity whose homoclinic orbits define the region of nonlinear stability of the so-called Föppl equilibrium. It is pointed out that a vortex pair properly placed downstream can overcome the cylinder and move off to infinity upstream. In addition, the nonlinear dynamics resulting from antisymmetric perturbations of the Föppl equilibrium is studied and its relevance to vortex shedding discussed.

Loewner equation for Laplacian growth: A Schwarz-Christoffel-transformation approach

The problem of Laplacian growth is considered within the Loewner-equation framework. A new method of deriving the Loewner equation for a large class of growth problems in the half-plane is presented. The method is based on the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation between the so-called `mathematical planes' at two infinitesimally separated times. Our method not only reproduces the correct Loewner evolution for the case of slit-like fingers but also can be extended to treat more general growth problems. In particular, the Loewner equation for the case of a bubble growing into the half-plane is presented.

Scaling relations for diversity of languages

The distribution of living languages is investigated and scaling relations are found for the diversity of languages as a function of the country area and population. These results are compared with data from Ecology and from computer simulations of fragmentation dynamics where similar scalings appear. The language size distribution is also studied and shown to display two scaling regions: (i) one for the largest (in population) languages and (ii) another one for intermediate-size languages. It is then argued that these two classes of languages may have distinct growth dynamics, being distributed on the sets of different fractal dimensions.

Complex dynamics in a one--block model for earthquakes

A two-dimensional earthquake model that consists of a single block resting upon a slowly moving rough surface and connected by two springs to rigid supports is studied. Depending on the elastic anisotropy and the friction force three generic regimes are possible: i) pure creep; ii) pure stick-slip motion; and iii) a mixed regime. In all cases the long-time dynamics (fixed point, periodic orbit or chaos) is determined by the direction of the pulling velocity. The possible relevance of our findings to real faults is briefly discussed.

Single-particle model for a granular ratchet

A simple model for a granular ratchet corresponding to a single grain bouncing off a vertically vibrating sawtooth-like base is studied. Depending on the vibration strength, the sawtooth roughness and the restitution coefficient, horizontal transport in both the preferred and unfavoured directions is observed. A phase diagram indicating the regions in parameter space where each of the three possible regimes (no current, normal current, and current reversal) occurs is presented.

Long-range correlations and nonstationarity in the Brazilian stock market

We report an empirical study of the Ibovespa index of the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange in which we detect the existence of long-range correlations. To analyze our data we introduce a rescaled variant of the usual Detrended Fluctuation Analysis that allows us to obtain the Hurst exponent through a one-parameter fitting. We also compute a time-dependent Hurst exponent H(t) using three-year moving time windows. In particular, we find that before the launch of the Collor Plan in 1990 the curve H(t) remains, in general, well above 1/2, while afterwards it stays close to 1/2. We thus argue that the structural reforms set off by the Collor Plan has lead to a more efficient stock market in Brazil. We also suggest that the time dependence of the Ibovespa Hurst exponent could be described in terms of a multifractional Brownian motion.
