First detection of VHE gamma-rays from SN 1006 by H.E.S.S

Recent theoretical predictions of the lowest very high energy (VHE) luminosity of SN 1006 are only a factor 5 below the previously published H.E.S.S. upper limit, thus motivating further in-depth observations of this source. Deep observations at VHE energies (above 100 GeV) were carried out with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of Cherenkov Telescopes from 2003 to 2008. More than 100 hours of data have been collected and subjected to an improved analysis procedure. Observations resulted in the detection of VHE gamma-rays from SN 1006. The measured gamma-ray spectrum is compatible with a power-law, the flux is of the order of 1% of that detected from the Crab Nebula, and is thus consistent with the previously established H.E.S.S. upper limit. The source exhibits a bipolar morphology, which is strongly correlated with non-thermal X-rays. Because the thickness of the VHE-shell is compatible with emission from a thin rim, particle acceleration in shock waves is likely to be the origin of the gamma-ray signal. The measured flux level can be accounted for by inverse Compton emission, but a mixed scenario that includes leptonic and hadronic components and takes into account the ambient matter density inferred from observations also leads to a satisfactory description of the multi-wavelength spectrum.

Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.

A prototype large-angle photon veto detector for the P326 experiment at CERN

The P326 experiment at the CERN SPS has been proposed with the purpose of measuring the branching ratio for the decay K^+ \to π^+ ν\barν to within 10%. The photon veto system must provide a rejection factor of 10^8 for π^0 decays. We have explored two designs for the large-angle veto detectors, one based on scintillating tiles and the other using scintillating fibers. We have constructed a prototype module based on the fiber solution and evaluated its performance using low-energy electron beams from the Frascati Beam-Test Facility. For comparison, we have also tested a tile prototype constructed for the CKM experiment, as well as lead-glass modules from the OPAL electromagnetic barrel calorimeter. We present results on the linearity, energy resolution, and time resolution obtained with the fiber prototype, and compare the detection efficiency for electrons obtained with all three instruments.

An indirect dark matter search with diffuse gamma rays from the Galactic Centre with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

The detection of non-baryonic dark matter through its gamma-ray annihilation in the centre of our galaxy has been studied. The gamma fluxes according to different models have been simulated and compared to those expected to be observed with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), during a long-term mission on board of the International Space Station. Under the assumption that the dark matter halo is composed of the lightest, stable supersymmetric particle, the neutralino, the results of the simulations in the framework of mSUGRA models, show that with a cuspy dark matter halo or a clumpy halo, the annihilation gamma-ray signal would be detected by AMS. More optimistic perspectives are obtained with the Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB) model. The latter leads also to a cosmologically important 6Li abundance. Finally, the discovery potential for the massive Kaluza-Klein dark matter candidates has been evaluated and their detection looks feasible.

New results on direct CP violation in charged kaon decays by NA48/2

The NA48/2 result, based on the data collected during the 2003 run, on direct CP violation in $K^{\pm}\toπ^{\pm}π^0π^0$ decay is presented. The main goal of the experiment is to reach a sensitivity at level of $10^{-4}$ in the measurement of the charge asymmetry parameter $A_g=(g^+-g^-)/(g^++g^-)$, where $g$ is the \emph{linear slope} of the Dalitz plot in the $K\to 3π$ decay. Thanks to the simultaneous collection of the two kaon charges and to the high resolution of the main sub-detectors, the systematics uncertainties are kept under the statistical error level. The experimental procedure, the analysis technique and the main systematics are discussed to present the final result $$ A_g=(1.8\pm2.6)\times 10^{-4} $$ This result based on more than $45\cdot10^6$ events, correspondig to one half of the whole two year data taking, is about an order of magnitude more precise with respect to the previous measurement.

The production of proton and lepton fluxes in near Earth orbit

Substantial fluxes of protons and leptons with energies below the geomagnetic cutoff have been measured by the AMS experiment at altitudes of 370-390 Km, in the latitude interval +/- 51.7 degrees. The production mechanisms of the observed trapped fluxes are investigated in detail by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code. All known processes involved in the interaction of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere (detailed descriptions of the magnetic field and atmospheric density, as well as the electromagnetic and nuclear interaction processes) are included in the simulation. The results are presented and compared with the experimental data, indicating good agreement with the observed fluxes. The impact of secondary proton flux on particle production in atmosphere is briefly discussed.

Leptons with E>200 MeV trapped in the Earth's radiation belts

For the first time accurate measurements of electron and positron fluxes in the energy range 0.2-10 GeV have been performed with the Alpha Magnetic Spectometer (AMS) instrument at altitudes of 370-390 Km in the geographic latitude interval +/- 51.7 deg. We present an original analysis of the AMS data, focused on the study of the under-cutoff component of these fluxes, outside the region of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). A separation in quasi-trapped, long lifetime (O(10 s)), and albedo, short life time (O(100 ms)), components is found. The flux maps as a function of the canonical adiabatic variables L, alpha0 are determined in the interval (L,alpha0)=(0.95-3,0-90) for electrons with E less than 10 GeV, and positrons with E less than 3 GeV. The results are compared with existing data at lower energies and in similar L, alpha0 range. The properties of the observed under-cutoff particles are also investigated in terms of their residence times and geographical origin. The resulting distributions are discussed and related to the characteristics of the drift shells observed by AMS.
