GSI anomaly and spin-rotation coupling

We propose a model in which a recently reported modulation in the decay of the hydrogenlike ions ${}^{140}$Pr$^{\, 58 +}$, ${}^{142}$Pm$^{\, 60 +}$ and ${}^{122}$I$^{\, 52 +}$ arises from the coupling of rotation to the spin of electron and nucleus. The model shows that the spin-spin coupling of electron and nucleus does not contribute to the modulation and predicts that the anomaly cannot be observed if the motion of the ions is rectilinear, or if the ions are stopped in a target. It also supports the notion that the modulation frequency is proportional to the inverse of the atomic mass.

Consequences of f(R)-theories of gravity on gravitational leptogenesis

f(R)-theories of gravity are reviewed in the framework of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The asymmetry is generated by the gravitational coupling of heavy (Majorana) neutrinos with the Ricci scalar curvature. In order that the mechanism works, a time varying non-zero Ricci curvature is necessary. The latter is provided by f(R) cosmology, whose Lagrangian density is of the form {\cal L}(R)\sim f(R). In particular we study the cases f(R)\sim R+αR^n and f(R)\sim R^{1+ε}.

Constraints on massive gravity theory from big bang nucleosynthesis

The massive gravity cosmology is studied in the scenario of big bang nucleosynthesis. By making use of current bounds on the deviation from the fractional mass, we derive the constraints on the free parameters of the theory. The cosmological consequences of the model are also discussed in the framework of the PAMELA experiment.

Cosmic relic abundance and f(R) gravity

The cosmological consequences of $f(R)$ gravity are reviewed in the framework of recent data obtained by PAMELA (Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) experiment. This collaboration has reported an excess of positron events that cannot be explained by conventional cosmology and particle physics, and are usually ascribed to the dark matter presence (in particular, weak interacting massive particles). The dark matter interpretation of PAMELA data has motivated the study of alternative cosmological models (with respect to the standard cosmology) owing to the fact that they predict an enhancement of the Hubble expansion rate, giving rise, in such a way, to thermal relics with a larger relic abundance. Our analysis shows that $f(R)$ cosmology allows to explain the PAMELA puzzle for dark matter relic particles with masses of the order or lesser than $10^2$ GeV in the regime $ρ^c \lesssim ρ^m $ where $ρ^c$ is the curvature density and $ρ^m$ the radiation density. For the model $f(R)=R+αR^n$, it then follows that $n\simeq 1$ and small corrections with respect to General Relativity could lead indeed to address the experimental results. However other interesting cosmological models can be considered during the pre-BBN epoch as soon as the BBN constraints are relaxed. In such a case, the PAMELA data can be fitted for a larger class of $f(R)$-models.

Nonlinear electrodynamics and CMB polarization

Recently WMAP and BOOMERanG experiments have set stringent constraints on the polarization angle of photons propagating in an expanding universe: $Δα= (-2.4 \pm 1.9)^\circ$. The polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) is reviewed in the context of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). We compute the polarization angle of photons propagating in a cosmological background with planar symmetry. For this purpose, we use the Pagels-Tomboulis (PT) Lagrangian density describing NLED, which has the form $L\sim (X/Λ^4)^{δ- 1}\; X $, where $X=1/4 F_{αβ} F^{αβ}$, and $δ$ the parameter featuring the non-Maxwellian character of the PT nonlinear description of the electromagnetic interaction. After looking at the polarization components in the plane orthogonal to the ($x$)-direction of propagation of the CMB photons, the polarization angle is defined in terms of the eccentricity of the universe, a geometrical property whose evolution on cosmic time (from the last scattering surface to the present) is constrained by the strength of magnetic fields over extragalactic distances.

Spin-rotation coupling in non-exponential decay of hydrogenlike heavy ions

We discuss a model in which a recently reported modulation in the decay of the hydrogenlike ions ${}^{140}$Pr$^{58 +}$ and ${}^{142}$Pm$^{60 +}$ arises from the coupling of rotation to the spin of electron and nuclei (Thomas precession). A similar model describes the electron modulation in muon $ g-2$ experiments correctly. Agreement with the GSI experimental results is obtained for the current QED-values of the bound electron g-factors, $g({}^{140}$Pr$^{58 +})=1.872$ and $g({}^{142}$Pm$^{60 +})=1.864$, if the Lorentz factor of the bound electron is $\sim 1.88$. The latter is fixed by either of the two sets of experimental data. The model predicts that the modulation is not observable if the motion of the ions is linear, or if the ions are stopped in a target.

Optics of spin-1 particles from gravity-induced phases

The Maxwell and Maxwell-de Rham equations can be solved exactly to first order in an external gravitational field. The gravitational background induces phases in the wave functions of spin-1 particles. These phases yield the optics of the particles without requiring any thin lens approximation.

Standard Model Extension with Gravity and Gravitational Baryogenesis

The Standard Model Extension with the inclusion of gravity is studied in the framework of the gravitational baryogenesis, a mechanism to generate the baryon asymmetry based on the coupling between the Ricci scalar curvature and the baryon current (\partial_μR)J^μ. We show that, during the radiation era of the expanding Universe, a non vanishing time derivative of the Ricci curvature arises as a consequence of the coupling between the coefficients for the Lorentz and CPT violation and Ricci's tensor. The order of magnitude for these coefficients are derived from current bounds on baryon asymmetry.

Electromagnetic shape resonances of a dielectric sphere and radiation of portable telephones

The frequency band used by cellular telephones includes the eigenfrequencies of a dielectric sphere with physical characteristics close to those of a human head. Proceeding from the spatial features of the natural modes of such a sphere we propose an independent and clear evident accuracy test for the complicated numerical calculations which are conducted when estimating the potential hazard due to the use of cellular telephones, in particular, for the check of a proper handling of the electromagnetic shape resonances of a human head.

Baryogenesis in $f(R)$-Theories of Gravity

$f(R)$-theories of gravity are reviewed in the context of the so called gravitational baryogenesis. The latter is a mechanism for generating the baryon asymmetry in the Universe, and relies on the coupling between the Ricci scalar curvature $R$ and the baryon current. Gravity Lagrangians of the form ${\cal L}(R)\sim R^n$, where $n$ differs from 1 (the case of the General Relativity) only for tiny deviations of a few percent, are consistent with the current bounds on the observed baryon asymmetry.

Quasi-normal modes of a dielectric ball and some their implications

It is shown that the quasi-normal modes arise, in a natural way, when considering the oscillations in unbounded regions by imposing the radiation condition at spatial infinity with a complex wave vector $k$. Hence quasi-normal modes are not peculiarities of gravitation problems only (black holes and relativistic stars). It is proposed to consider the space form of the quasi-normal modes with allowance for their time dependence. As a result, the problem of their unbounded increase when $r\to \infty$ is not encountered more. The properties of quasi-normal modes of a compact dielectric sphere are discussed in detail. It is argued that the spatial form of these modes (especially so-called surface modes) should be taken into account, for example, when estimating the potential health hazards due to the use of portable telephones.

Leptogenesis from Spin-Gravity Coupling Following Inflation

The energy levels of the left and the right handed neutrinos is split in the background of gravitational waves generated during inflation which in presence of lepton number violating interactions gives rise to a net lepton asymmetry at equilibrium. Lepton number violation is achieved by the same dimension five operator which gives rise to neutrino masses after electro-weak symmetry breaking. A net baryon asymmetry of the same magnitude can be generated from this lepton asymmetry by electroweak sphaleron processes.

A fluid os strings as a viable candidate to the dark side of the universe

We investigate the possibility that part of the dark matter is not made out of the usual cold dark matter (CDM) dustlike particles, but is under the form of a fluid of strings with barotropic factor $w_s = -1/3$ of cosmic origin. To this aim, we split the dark matter density parameter in two terms and investigate the dynamics of a spatially flat universe filled with baryons, CDM, fluid of strings and dark energy, modeling this latter as a cosmological constant or a negative pressure fluid with a constant equation of state $w < 0$. To test the viability of the models and to constrain their parameters, we use the Type Ia Supernovae Hubble diagram and the data on the gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters. We also discuss the weak field limit of a model comprising a significant fraction of dark matter in the form of a fluid of strings and show that this mechanism makes it possible to reduce the need for the elusive and up to now undetected CDM. We finally find that a model comprising both a cosmological constant and a fluid of strings fits very well the data and eliminates the need of phantom dark energy thus representing a viable candidate to alleviate some of the problems plaguing the dark side of the universe.

Lower Neutrino Mass Bound from SN1987A Data and Quantum Geometry

A lower bound on the light neutrino mass $m_ν$ is derived in the framework of a geometrical interpretation of quantum mechanics. Using this model and the time of flight delay data for neutrinos coming from SN1987A, we find that the neutrino masses are bounded from below by $m_ν\gtrsim 10^{-4}-10^{-3}$eV, in agreement with the upper bound $m_ν\lesssim$ $({\cal O}(0.1) - {\cal O} (1))$ eV currently available. When the model is applied to photons with effective mass, we obtain a lower limit on the electron density in intergalactic space that is compatible with recent baryon density measurements.

Pulsar Kicks Induced by Spin Flavor Oscillations of Neutrinos in Gravitational Fields

The origin of pulsar kicks is reviewed in the framework of the spin-flip conversion of neutrinos propagating in the gravitational field of a magnetized protoneutron star. We find that for a mass in rotation with angular velocity ${\bbox ω}$, the spin connections entering in the Dirac equation give rise to the coupling term ${\bbox ω}\cdot {\bf p}$, being ${\bf p}$ the neutrino momentum. Such a coupling can be responsible of pulsar kicks owing to the neutrino emission asymmetry generated by the relative orientation of ${\bf p}$ with respect to ${\bbox ω}$. For our estimations, the large non standard neutrino magnetic momentum, $μ_ν\lesssim 10^{-11}μ_B$, is considered.

Calculation of the Casimir energy at zero and finite temperature: Some recent results

This survey summarizes briefly results obtained recently in the Casimir energy studies devoted to the following subjects: i) account of the material characteristics of the media in calculations of the vacuum energy (for example, Casimir energy of a dilute dielectric ball); ii) application of the spectral geometry methods for investigating the vacuum energy of quantized fields with the goal to gain some insight, specifically, in the geometrical origin of the divergences that enter the vacuum energy and to develop the relevant renormalization procedure; iii) a universal method for calculating the high temperature dependence of the Casimir energy in terms of heat kernel coefficients. A special attention is payed to the mathematical tools applied in this field, namely, to the spectral zeta function method and heat kernel technique.

Neutrino optics and oscillations in gravitational fields

We study the propagation of neutrinos in gravitational fields using wave functions that are exact to first order in the metric deviation. For illustrative purposes, the geometrical background is represented by the Lense-Thirring metric. We derive explicit expressions for neutrino deflection, helicity transitions, flavor oscillations and oscillation Hamiltonian.
