Tunable Thermal Expansion Behavior in the Intermetallic YbGaGe

We investigate the effects of carbon and boron doping on the thermal expansion in the hexagonal (P63/mmc) intermetallic YbGaGe. X-ray powder diffraction was used to measure the lattice constants on pure and doped (C or B at nominal levels of 0.5 %) samples from T~10 K to T~300 K. Also measured were resistivity, specific-heat, and magnetic susceptibility. While the pure YbGaGe samples exhibit positive thermal volume expansion, (V300K-V10K)/V300K = 0.94%, the volume expansion in the lightly C and B-doped samples, contract and tend towards zero volume expansion. Such a strong response with such light doping suggests that the underlying mechanism for the reported zero volume expansion is substitutional disorder, and not the previously proposed valence fluctuations.

Competing Magnetic Phases on a "Kagome Staircase"

We present thermodynamic and neutron data on Ni_3V_2O_8, a spin-1 system on a kagome staircase. The extreme degeneracy of the kagome antiferromagnet is lifted to produce two incommensurate phases at finite T - one amplitude modulated, the other helical - plus a commensurate canted antiferromagnet for T ->0. The H-T phase diagram is described by a model of competing first and second neighbor interactions with smaller anisotropic terms. Ni_3V_2O_8 thus provides an elegant example of order from sub leading interactions in a highly frustrated system

The Effect of Ru substitution for Ni on the superconductivity in MgCNi3-xRux

The superconductor MgCNi3 has been chemically doped by partial substitution of Ru for Ni in the solid solution MgCNi3-xRux for 0<x<0.5. Magnetic and specific heat measurements show that the Sommerfeld parameter (gamma_exp) and TC decrease immediately on Ru substitution, but that a TC above 2K is maintained even for a relatively large decrease in gamma_exp. Ferromagnetism is not observed to develop through Ru substitution, and the normal state magnetic susceptibility is suppressed.

Absence of ferromagnetism in Co and Mn substituted polycrystalline ZnO

We discuss the properties of semiconducting bulk ZnO when substituted with the magnetic transition metal ions Mn and Co, with substituent fraction ranging from $x$ = 0.02 to $x$ = 0.15. The magnetic properties were measured as a function of magnetic field and temperature and we find no evidence for magnetic ordering in these systems down to $T$ = 2 K. The magnetization can be fit by the sum of a Curie-Weiss term with a Weiss temperature of $Θ\gg$100 K and a Curie term. We attribute this behavior to contributions from both \textit{t}M ions with \textit{t}M nearest neighbors and from isolated spins. This particular functional form for the susceptibility is used to explain why no ordering is observed in \textit{t}M substituted ZnO samples despite the large values of the Weiss temperature. We also discuss in detail the methods we used to minimize any impurity contributions to the magnetic signal.

Valence-electron transfer and a metal-insulator transition in a strongly correlated perovskite oxide

We present transport and thermal data for the quadruple-perovskites MCu3(Ti1-xRux)4O12 where 0 < x < 1. A metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs for Ru concentrations x~0.75. At the same time, the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic state is destroyed and it's magnetic entropy suppressed by Ru on a 1:1 basis. This implies that each Ru transfers an electron to a Cu ion and thus the MIT correlates with filling the Cu 3d shell. The Cu spin entropy in this strongly correlated electron material provides a unique probe among MIT systems.

Low temperature phase transitions and crystal structure of Na0.5CoO2

The crystal structure of Na0.5CoO2, determined by powder neutron diffraction, is reported. The structure consists of layers of edge-shared CoO6 octahedra in a triangular lattice, with Na ions occupying ordered positions in the interleaving planes. The Na ions form one-dimensional zigzag chains. Two types of Co ions, which differ only subtly in their coordination by oxygen, are also found in chains. Specific heat measurements show that the transitions observed at 87 K and 53 K in the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility are accompanied by changes in entropy. Electron diffraction studies suggest that the 87K transition may have a structural component.

Field-Tuning of the electron and hole populations in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11

Experiments on the Hall coefficient R_H and heat capactity C reveal an unusual, compensated electronic ground state in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11. At low temperature T, R_H decreases linearly with magnetic field |H| for fields larger than the field scale set by the Zeeman energy. The results suggest that the electron and hole populations are tuned by H in opposite directions via coupling of the spins to the field. As T is decreased below 5 K, the curve C(T)/T vs. T^2 shows an anomalous flattening consistent with a rapidly growing Sommerfeld parameter γ(T). We discuss shifts of the electron and hole chemical potentials by H to interpret the observed behavior of R_H.

Magnetodielectric Effects from Spin Fluctuations in Isostructural Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Systems

We report on the effects of spin fluctuations, magnetic ordering, and external magnetic field on the dielectric constant of the ferromagnet SeCuO3, and the antiferromagnet TeCuO3. A model based on the coupling between uniform polarization and the q-dependent spin-spin correlation function is presented to explain the different behaviors for these isostructural compounds. The large magnetocapacitance near the transition temperature in the ferromagnet SeCuO3 suggests routes to enhancing the magnetodielectric response for practical applications.

The Kagome-staircase lattice: Magnetic ordering in Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8

Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8 have spin-1 and spin-3/2 magnetic lattices that are a new anisotropic variant of the Kagome net, wherein edge-sharing MO6 octahedra form the rises and rungs of a "Kagome staircase". The anisotropy largely relieves the geometric frustration, but results in rich magnetic behavior. Characterization of the magnetization of polycrystalline samples reveals that the compounds are ferrimagnetic in character. Heat capacity measurements show the presence of four magnetic phase transitions below 9 K for Ni3V2O8 and two below 11 K for Co3V2O8. Comparison to the low temperature heat capacity of isostructural nonmagnetic Zn3V2O8 provides an estimate of the magnetic entropy involved with the phase transitions. The results suggest that Co3V2O8 may display magnetic transitions below 2 K.

beta-Cu3V2O8: Magnetic ordering in a spin-1/2 kagome-staircase lattice

The spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions in beta-Cu3V2O8 occupy the sites of a Kagome-staircase lattice, an anisotropic variant of the Kagome net: buckled layers and imbedded plaquettes of three edge-shared CuO4 squares break the ideal Kagome symmetry. Susceptibility and heat capacity measurements show the onset of short-range ordering at approximately 75 K, and a magnetic phase transition with the characteristics of antiferromagnetism at ~29 K. Comparison to the Curie Weiss theta (theta,CW = -135 K) indicates that the geometric frustration is largely relieved by the anisotropy. A ferromagnetic contribution to the magnetization below the ordering temperature and negative magnetization in zero-field cooled measurements at low fields are attributed to uncompensated spins at grain boundaries or defects.

Colossal Dielectric Constants in Braced Lattices with Defects

The dielectric constant of CaCu3Ti4O12 is measured with a different electrode geometry than previous measurements. Similar colossal values are obtained showing that they are "intrinsic" to the material. We show that in braced structures such as CaCu3Ti4O12, a small concentration O(10-3) of defects, which disrupt the bracing and relax between different equivalent configurations, can lead to colossal dielectric constants above a characteristic temperature. The dielectric constant e(w,T) has a frequency and temperature dependence of the same form as found experimentally.

Structure and Superconductivity in Zr-Stabilized, Nonstoichiometric Molybdenum Diboride

The structure and physical properties of the Zr-stabilized, nonstoichiometric molybdenum diboride superconductor are reported. Good quality material of the diboride structure type can only be obtained by partial substitution of Zr for Mo, and the quenching of melts. The phase is best made with boron in excess of the ideal 2:1 boron to metal ratio. Powder neutron diffraction measurements show that the non-stoichiometry is accommodated by atom deficiency in the metal layers. The diboride structure type exists for (Mo.96Zr.04)xB2 for x between 0.85 and 1.0. Electron diffraction shows that the stoichiometric material, x=1, has a significant number of stacking faults. Tc increases from 5.9 to 8.2K with the introduction of metal vacancies. Resistivity measurements indicate that (Mo.96Zr.04).88B2 is a bad metal, and specific heat measurements show that gamma= 4.4 mJ/mol K2, and that deltaC/gammaTc = 1.19. Preliminary boron isotope effect measurements indicate an exponent 0.11(5). Analysis of the data in terms of the electronic structure is reported, allowing an estimate of the electron-phonon coupling constant, lamda = 0.1-0.3, making these weak-coupling superconductors. Preliminary characterizations of the superconductivity in the related phases NbxB2 and (Mo.96X.04).85B2 for X=Ti, and Hf are reported.

Universal Behaviour of the Superfluid Fraction and Tc of He-3 in 99.5% Open Aerogel

We have investigated the superfluid transition of He-3 in a 99.5% porosity silica aerogel. This very dilute sample shows behaviour intermediary between bulk He-3 and He-3 confined to the denser aerogels previously studied. We present data on both the superfluid transition temperature and the superfluid density and compare our results with previous measurements. Finally, we show that the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature and suppression of the superfluid density of He-3 in aerogel follow a universal relation for a range of aerogel samples.

Low temperature acoustic properties of amorphous silica and the Tunneling Model

Internal friction and speed of sound of a-SiO(2) was measured above 6 mK using a torsional oscillator at 90 kHz, controlling for thermal decoupling, non-linear effects, and clamping losses. Strain amplitudes e(A) = 10^{-8} mark the transition between the linear and non-linear regime. In the linear regime, excellent agreement with the Tunneling Model was observed for both the internal friction and speed of sound, with a cut-off energy of E(min) = 6.6 mK. In the non-linear regime, two different behaviors were observed. Above 10 mK the behavior was typical for non-linear harmonic oscillators, while below 10 mK a different behavior was found. Its origin is not understood.
