Degenerate or Hierarchical Neutrinos in Supersymmetric Inflation

Two moderate extensions of the minimal supersymmetric standard model are considered. The first one includes a U(1)_{B-L} gauge group, while the second is based on a left-right symmetric gauge group. In these models, hybrid inflation is `naturally' realized and the mu problem is solved via a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Baryon number conservation is an automatic consequence of a R-symmetry. The baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated through a primordial leptogenesis. In the `B-L' case, neutrinos are assumed to acquire degenerate masses equal to about 1.5 eV by coupling to SU(2)_L triplet superfields, thereby providing the hot dark matter of the universe. In the `left-right' model, light neutrinos acquire hierarchical masses by the seesaw mechanism. They are taken from the small angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle and the SuperKamiokande data. Maximal nu_{mu}-nu_{tau} mixing, implied by the same data, is easily accommodated. The gravitino and baryogenesis constraints can be satisfied, in both models, with more or less `natural' values of the relevant coupling constants.

Degenerate Neutrinos and Supersymmetric Inflation

A moderate extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model which includes a U(1)_(B-L) gauge group (B and L being the baryon and lepton number) and a Peccei-Quinn symmetry, U(1)_PQ, is presented. The hybrid inflationary scenario is automatic and `natural' in this model. The mu problem of the minimal supersymmetric standard model is solved by coupling the electroweak higgses to fields which break U(1)_PQ. Baryon number conservation and, thus, proton stability are automatic consequences of a R-symmetry. Neutrinos are assumed to acquire degenerate masses of about 1.5 eV by coupling to SU(2)_L triplet superfields, thereby providing the hot dark matter of the universe. The inflaton decays into these triplets which, via their subsequent decay, produce a primordial lepton asymmetry later converted into the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. The gravitino and baryogenesis constraints can be satisfied with `natural' values (of order 10^{-3}) of the relevant coupling constants.

Hierarchical Neutrinos and Supersymmetric Inflation

A moderate extension of MSSM based on a left-right symmetric gauge group, within which hybrid inflation is `naturally' realized, is discussed. The mu problem is solved via a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Light neutrinos acquire hierarchical masses by the seesaw mechanism. They are taken from the small angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle and the SuperKamiokande data. The range of parameters consistent with maximal nu_mu-nu_tau mixing and the gravitino constraint is determined. The baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated through a primordial leptogenesis. The subrange of parameters, where the baryogenesis constraint is also met, is specified. The required values of parameters are more or less `natural'.

Inflation

The shortcomings of the Standard Big Bang Cosmological Model as well as their resolution in the context of inflationary cosmology are discussed. The inflationary scenario and the subsequent oscillation and decay of the inflaton field are then studied in some detail. The density perturbations produced during inflation and their evolution during the matter dominated era are presented. The temperature fluctuations of the cosmic background radiation are summarized. The non-supersymmetric as well as the supersymmetric hybrid inflationary model is introduced and the `reheating' of the universe is analyzed in the context of the latter and a left-right symmetric gauge group. The scenario of baryogenesis via a primordial leptogenesis is considered in some detail. It is, finally, pointed out that, in the context of a supersymmetric model based on a left-right symmetric gauge group, hybrid inflation, baryogenesis via primordial leptogenesis and neutrino oscillations are linked. This scheme, supplemented by a familiar ansatz for the neutrino Dirac masses and mixing of the two heaviest families and with the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, implies that the tau-neutrino mass lies approximately between 1 and 9 eV. The mu-tau mixing angle is predicted to lie in a narrow range which will be partially tested by the Chorus/Nomad experiment.

Inflation, the mu Problem and Maximal nu_mu-nu_tau Mixing

A supersymmetric model based on a left-right symmetric gauge group, which `naturally' leads to hybrid inflation, is studied. It is shown that the mu problem can be easily solved in this model. The observed baryon asymmetry of the universe is produced via a primordial leptogenesis. For masses of nu_mu, nu_tau from the small angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino problem and SuperKamiokande, maximal nu_mu-nu_tau mixing can be achieved. The required values of the relevant parameters are, however, quite small.

Leptogenesis in Supersymmetric Hybrid Inflation

The nonsupersymmetric as well as the supersymmetric hybrid inflationary model is reviewed. The scenario of baryogenesis via a primordial leptogenesis is discussed and the role of the nonperturbative electroweak sphaleron effects is analyzed. A supersymmetric model based on a left-right symmetric gauge group, which `naturally' leads to hybrid inflation, is presented. The mu problem is solved, in this model, and the baryon asymmetry of the universe is produced through leptogenesis. For masses of nu_mu, nu_tau from the small angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino problem and SuperKamiokande, maximal nu_mu-nu_tau mixing can be achieved. The required values of the relevant parameters are, however, quite small.

Two-Stage Inflation in Supergravity

We investigate the viability of a two-stage inflationary scenario in the context of supergravity, so as to resolve the problem of initial conditions for hybrid inflation. We allow for non-renormalizable terms in the superpotential and consider the most general form of the Kahler potential and the gauge kinetic function. We construct a model with two stages of inflation, the first driven by D-term and the second by F-term energy density. The viability of this scenario depends on the non-minimal terms in the Kahler potential, for which we derive the necessary constraints.

R-Symmetry in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and Beyond with Several Consequences

The supersymmetric sector of minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) possesses a U(1) R-symmetry which contains Z_2 matter parity. Non-zero neutrino masses, consistent with a 'redefined' R-symmetry, are possible through the see-saw mechanism and/or a pair of superheavy (mass M) SU(2)_L triplets with vev of order M^2_W/M. If this R-symmetry is respected by the higher order terms, then baryon number conservation follows as an immediate consequence. In the presence of right handed neutrinos, the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe arises via leptogenesis. An interplay of R- and Peccei-Quinn symmetry simultaneously resolves the strong CP and mu problems.

Atmospheric Neutrino Anomaly and Supersymmetric Inflation

A detailed investigation of hybrid inflation and the subsequent reheating process is performed within a mu problem solving supersymmetric model based on a left-right symmetric gauge group. The process of baryogenesis via leptogenesis is especially studied. For mu and tau neutrino masses consistent with the small angle MSW resolution of the solar neutrino problem and the recent results of the SuperKamiokande experiment, we show that maximal mu-tau neutrino mixing can be achieved. The required value of the relevant coupling constant is, however, quite small (of the order 10^{-6}).

Neutrino Masses and Mixing from Supersymmetric Inflation

A supersymmetric model based on a left-right symmetric gauge group is proposed where hybrid inflation, baryogenesis and neutrino oscillations are linked. This scheme, supplemented by a familiar ansatz for the neutrino Dirac masses and mixing of the two heaviest families and with the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, implies that $m_{ν_τ}$ lies between 1 and 9 eV. The mixing angle $θ_{μτ}$ is predicted to lie in a narrow range which will be partially tested by the Chorus/Nomad experiment.

Mu Problem and Hybrid Inflation in Supersymmetric SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_B-L

We present a solution of the mu problem within a supersymmetric model based on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} gauge group. We show that this solution implies a built-in hybrid inflationary scenario, which may result in a successful baryogenesis via leptogenesis. Baryon number is essentially conserved as a result of an R-symmetry. Neutrinos with mass in the eV range can provide the `hot' dark matter component.

Supersymmetry and Inflation

A variant of hybrid inflation which is applicable in a wide class of supersymmetric grand unified models and reproduces the observed temperature perturbations of cosmic background radiation with natural values of the parameters is presented. The theory is consistent with the unification of the minimal supersymmetric standard model gauge couplings as measured at LEP. The termination of inflation is smooth and does not produce any topological defects. Numerical investigation of the cosmological evolution of the system shows that for almost all initial values of the fields we do get an adequate amount of inflation. Finally, the "reheating" process following inflation and the production of the baryon asymmetry of the universe via a primordial lepton asymmetry are briefly discussed and some important implications for right handed neutrino Majorana masses are investigated.

Initial Conditions for Supersymmetric Inflation

We perform a numerical investigation of the fields evolution in the supersymmetric inflationary model based on radiative corrections. Supergravity corrections are also included. We find that, out of all the examined initial data, only about 10% give an adequate amount of inflation and can be considered as ''natural''. Moreover, these successful initial conditions appear scattered and more or less isolated.

Supersymmetric Inflation, Baryogenesis and ν_μ - ν_τ Oscillations

In a supersymmetric left-right symmetric model, inflation, baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) and neutrino oscillations can become closely linked. A familiar ansatz for the neutrino Dirac masses and mixing of the two heaviest families, together with the MSW resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle, imply that 1 eV <_\sim m_{ν_{τ}<_\sim 9 eV. The predicted range for the mixing angle θ_μτwill be partially tested by the Chorus/Nomad experiment. The CP violating phase δ_{μτ} is also discussed.

Supersymmetric Inflation With Constraints on Superheavy Neutrino Masses

We consider a supersymmetric model of inflation in which the primordial density fluctuations are nearly scale invariant (the spectral index n is approximately 0.98) with amplitude proportional to (M/M_{Planck})^2, where M ~ 10^{16} GeV denotes the scale of the gauge symmetry breaking associated with inflation. The 60 or so e-foldings take place when all relevant scales are close to M, which helps suppress supergravity corrections. The gravitino and baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) constraints help determine the two heaviest right handed neutrino masses to be approximately 2 x 10^{13} GeV and 6 x 10^9 GeV.

Topological Defects and Inflation

In the context of supersymmetric models, we analyze the production of topological defects at the end of inflation driven by a conjugate pair of inflaton fields which are non-singlets under the continuous symmetry group of the theory. We find that magnetic monopoles of mass on the order of $10^{13}\ GeV$ can survive inflation and be present in our galaxy at an observable level. We also consider cosmic strings as well as domain walls.

Multiinstanton ladders in Baryon Number Violating Processes

We estimate the contribution of a class of multiinstanton ladder graphs to baryon and lepton number violating processes in the standard model. We find that this contribution is negligible and does not alter the high energy behavior of the leading semiclassical approximation.
