Application of quasi-steady state photoconductance technique to lifetime measurements on c-Ge substrates

Similar to other high quality crystalline absorbers, an accurate knowledge of surface passivation of crystalline Germanium (c-Ge) substrates is crucial for a straightforward improvement of photovoltaic device performance. For crystalline silicon devices, this information is typically obtained by quasisteady state photoconductance (QSS-PC) technique using Sinton WCT-120 tool. In this work, we explore the conditions to adapt this measurement technique to c-Ge substrates. Based on PC-1D simulations, we deduce that a minimum effective lifetime is needed corresponding to an effective diffusion length equal to the substrate thickness. Apart from this, an accurate estimation of the total photogeneration inside the c-Ge sample is also mandatory. This condition implies that the light intensity that impinges onto the sample must be measured with a c-Ge sensor, although the integrated c-Si sensor can be used for high flash intensities. Additionally, the optical factor used to evaluate sample reflectance must be also known, which is determined by measuring robust effective lifetime values under photoconductance decay conditions. Finally, knowledge about carrier mobility in c-Ge is also necessary to translate the measured photoconductance to the corresponding excess carrier density values. Lifetime measurements of passivated c-Ge substrates done by QSS-PC technique are validated by comparing them with the ones obtained by microwave photoconductance technique.

Impact of disorder on dynamics and ordering in the honeycomb lattice iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$

Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$ continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin-liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single crystal Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below $T_N$ the spectra show a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Both of these results provide evidence for inequivalent magnetic sites at low temperature, suggesting inhomogeneities are important for the magnetism. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is isotropic and diverges at $T_N$, suggesting that the Kitaev cubic axes may control the critical quantum spin fluctuations. In the ordered state, we observe gapless excitations, which may arise from site substitution, emergent defects from milder disorder, or possibly be associated with nearby quantum paramagnetic states distinct from the Kitaev spin liquid.

Photoexcited states of the harmonic honeycomb iridate γ-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We report equilibrium and nonequilibrium optical measurements on the recently synthesized "harmonic" honeycomb iridate γ-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ (LIO), as well as the layered honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ (NIO). Using Fourier transform infrared microscopy we performed reflectance measurements on LIO, from which we obtained the optical conductivity below 2 eV. In addition we measured the photoinduced changed in reflectance, ΔR, as a function of time, t, temperature, T, and probe field polarization in both LIO and NIO. In LIO, ΔR(t,T) is anisotropic and comprised of three T dependent components. Two of these components are related to the onset of magnetic order and the third is related to a photoinduced population of metastable electronic excited states. In NIO, ΔR(t,T) has a single T dependent component that is strikingly similar to the electronic excitation component of ΔR in LIO. Through analysis and comparison of ΔR(t,T) for two compounds, we extract information on the onset of magnetic correlations at and above the transition temperature in LIO, the bare spin-flip scattering rate in equilibrium, the lifetime of low-lying quasiparticle excitations, and the polarization dependence of optical transitions that are sensitive to magnetic order.

Solar neutrino results in Super-Kamiokande-III

The results of the third phase of the Super-Kamiokande solar neutrino measurement are presented and compared to the first and second phase results. With improved detector calibrations, a full detector simulation, and improved analysis methods, the systematic uncertainty on the total neutrino flux is estimated to be ?2.1%, which is about two thirds of the systematic uncertainty for the first phase of Super-Kamiokande. The observed 8B solar flux in the 5.0 to 20 MeV total electron energy region is 2.32+/-0.04 (stat.)+/-0.05 (sys.) *10^6 cm^-2sec^-1, in agreement with previous measurements. A combined oscillation analysis is carried out using SK-I, II, and III data, and the results are also combined with the results of other solar neutrino experiments. The best-fit oscillation parameters are obtained to be sin^2 θ12 = 0.30+0.02-0.01(tan^2 θ12 = 0.42+0.04 -0.02) and Δm2_21 = 6.2+1.1-1.9 *10^-5eV^2. Combined with KamLAND results, the best-fit oscillation parameters are found to be sin^2 θ12 = 0.31+/-0.01(tan^2 θ12 = 0.44+/-0.03) and Δm2_21 = 7.6?0.2*10^-5eV^2 . The 8B neutrino flux obtained from global solar neutrino experiments is 5.3+/-0.2(stat.+sys.)*10^6cm^-2s^-1, while the 8B flux becomes 5.1+/-0.1(stat.+sys.)*10^6cm^-2s^-1 by adding KamLAND result. In a three-flavor analysis combining all solar neutrino experiments, the upper limit of sin^2 θ13 is 0.060 at 95% C.L.. After combination with KamLAND results, the upper limit of sin^2 θ13 is found to be 0.059 at 95% C.L..

An Indirect Search for WIMPs in the Sun using 3109.6 days of upward-going muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the result of an indirect search for high energy neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun using upward-going muon (upmu) events at Super-Kamiokande. Datasets from SKI-SKIII (3109.6 days) were used for the analysis. We looked for an excess of neutrino signal from the Sun as compared with the expected atmospheric neutrino background in three upmu categories: stopping, non-showering, and showering. No significant excess was observed. The 90% C.L. upper limits of upward-going muon flux induced by WIMPs of 100 GeV/c$^2$ were 6.4$\times10^{-15}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ and 4.0$\times10^{-15}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ for the soft and hard annihilation channels, respectively. These limits correspond to upper limits of 4.5$\times10^{-39}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 2.7$\times10^{-40}$ cm$^{-2}$ for spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections in the soft and hard annihilation channels, respectively.

Search for Nucleon Decay into Charged Anti-lepton plus Meson in Super-Kamiokande I and II

Searches for a nucleon decay into a charged anti-lepton (e^+ or μ^+) plus a light meson (π^0, π^-, η, ρ^0, ρ^-, ω) were performed using the Super-Kamiokande I and II data. Twelve nucleon decay modes were searched for. The total exposure is 140.9 kiloton \cdot years, which includes a 91.7 kiloton \cdot year exposure (1489.2 live days) of Super-Kamiokande-I and a 49.2 kiloton \cdot year exposure (798.6 live days) of Super-Kamiokande-II. The number of candidate events in the data was consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background expectation. No significant evidence for a nucleon decay was observed in the data. Thus, lower limits on the nucleon partial lifetime at 90% confidence level were obtained. The limits range from 3.6 \times 10^31 to 8.2 \times 10^33 years, depending on the decay modes.

Search for GUT Monopoles at Super-Kamiokande

GUT monopoles captured by the Sun's gravitation are expected to catalyze proton decays via the Callan-Rubakov process. In this scenario, protons, which initially decay into pions, will ultimately produce ν_{e}, ν_μ and \barν_μ. After undergoing neutrino oscillation, all neutrino species appear when they arrive at the Earth, and can be detected by a 50,000 metric ton water Cherenkov detector, Super-Kamiokande (SK). A search for low energy neutrinos in the electron total energy range from 19 to 55 MeV was carried out with SK and gives a monopole flux limit of F_M(σ_0/1 mb) < 6.3 \times 10^{-24} (β_M/10^{-3})^2 cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at 90% C.L., where β_M is the monopole velocity in units of the speed of light and σ_0 is the catalysis cross section at β_M=1. The obtained limit is more than eight orders of magnitude more stringent than the current best cosmic-ray supermassive monopole flux limit, F_M < 1 \times 10^{-15} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} for β_M < 10^{-3} and also two orders of magnitude lower than the result of the Kamiokande experiment, which used a similar detection method.

Study of Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions with Atmospheric Neutrino Data in Super-Kamiokande I and II

In this paper we study non-standard neutrino interactions as an example of physics beyond the standard model using atmospheric neutrino data collected during the Super-Kamiokande I(1996-2001) and II(2003-2005) periods. We focus on flavor-changing-neutral-currents (FCNC), which allow neutrino flavor transitions via neutral current interactions, and effects which violate lepton non-universality (NU) and give rise to different neutral-current interaction-amplitudes for different neutrino flavors. We obtain a limit on the FCNC coupling parameter, varepsilon_{mu tau}, |varepsilon_{mu tau}|<1.1 x 10^{-2} at 90%C.L. and various constraints on other FCNC parameters as a function of the NU coupling, varepsilon_{e e}. We find no evidence of non-standard neutrino interactions in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric data.

An ab-initio converse NMR approach for pseudopotentials

We extend the recently developed converse NMR approach [T. Thonhauser, D. Ceresoli, A. Mostofi, N. Marzari, R. Resta, and D. Vanderbilt, J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{131}, 101101 (2009)] such that it can be used in conjunction with norm-conserving, non-local pseudopotentials. This extension permits the efficient ab-initio calculation of NMR chemical shifts for elements other than hydrogen within the convenience of a plane-wave pseudopotential approach. We have tested our approach on several finite and periodic systems, finding very good agreement with established methods and experimental results.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillation analysis with sub-leading effects in Super-Kamiokande I, II, and III

We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. The atmospheric mixing angle is within 0.407 <= sin^2 theta_{23} <= 0.583 at 90% C.L.

About the Constant of Motion, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian of the Gravitational Attraction of Two Bodies with Variable Mass (Gylden-Meshcherskii problem)

The Lagrangian, the Hamiltonian and the constant of motion of the gravitational attraction of two bodies when one of them has variable mass is considered. This is done by choosing the reference system in one of the bodies which allows to reduce the system of equations to 1-D problem. The trajectories found in the space position-velocity,(x,v), are qualitatively different from those on the space position-momentum,(x,p).

Statistical Physics on the space (x,v) for dissipative systems and study of an ensemble of harmonic oscillators in a weak linear dissipative medium

We use the phase space position-velocity ($x,v$) to deal with the statistical properties of velocity dependent dynamical systems, like dissipative ones. Within this approach, we study the statistical properties of an ensemble of harmonic oscillators in a linear weak dissipative media. Using the Debye model of a crystal, we calculate at first order in the dissipative parameter the entropy, free energy, internal energy, equation of state and specific heat using the classical and quantum approaches. for the classical approach we found that the entropy, the equation of state, and the free energy depend on the dissipative parameter, but the internal energy and specific heat do not depend of it. For the quantum case, we found that all the thermodynamical quantities depend on this parameter.

Effects on the eigenvalues of the quantum bouncer due to dissipation

Effects on the spectra of the quantum bouncer due to dissipation are given when a linear or quadratic dissipation is taken into account. Classical constant of motions and Hamiltonians are deduced for these systems and their quantized eigenvalues are estimated through perturbation theory. we found some differences when we compare the eigenvalues of these two quantities.

Quantization of a Constant of Motion for the Harmonic Oscillator with a Time-Explicitly Depending Force

The quantization of a constant of motion for the harmonic oscillator with a time-explicitly depending external force is carried out. This quantization approach is compared with the normal Hamiltonian quantization approach. Numerical results show that there are qualitative and quantitative differences for both approaches, suggesting that the quantization of this constant of motion may be verified experimentally.
