Effects of color superconductivity on the nucleation of quark matter in neutron stars

We study the nucleation of quark matter drops at the center of cold deleptonized neutron stars. This is relevant in the determination of the critical mass $M_{cr}$ of hadronic stars above which it is possible a transition to a quark star (strange or hybrid). We investigate the dependence of $M_{cr}$ upon the parameters of the quark model (the Bag constant $B$, the pairing gap $Δ$, and the surface tension $σ$ of the quark-hadron interphase) and for different parametrization of the hadronic equations of state. The dependence of $M_{cr}$ on $B$, $Δ$ and $σ$ is mild if the parameters of the quark model correspond to hybrid stars, and strong if they correspond to strange stars. For a large part of the parameter space corresponding to hybrid stars, the critical mass is very close (but smaller than) the maximum mass of hadronic stars, and therefore compatible with a "mixed" population of compact stars (pure hadronic up to the critical mass and hybrid above the critical mass). For very large $B$ the critical mass is never smaller than the maximum mass of hadronic stars, implying that quark stars cannot form through the here studied mechanism. The energy released in the conversion is $3 \times 10^{52}$ erg - $4 \times 10^{53}$ erg, i.e. sufficient to power a gamma ray burst.

Deconfinement and color superconductivity in cold neutron stars

We study the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter in neutron star conditions in the light of color superconductivity. Deconfinement is considered to be a first order phase transition that conserves color and flavor. It gives a short-lived {($τ\sim τ_{weak}$)} transitory colorless-quark-phase that is {\it not} in $β$-equilibrium. We deduce the equations governing deconfinement when quark pairing is allowed and find the regions of the parameter space (pairing gap $Δ$ versus bag constant $B$) where deconfinement is possible inside cold neutron stars. We show that for a wide region of ($B,Δ$) a pairing pattern is reachable within a strong interaction timescale, and the resulting ``2SC-like'' phase is preferred energetically to the unpaired phase. We also show that although $β$-stable hybrid star configurations are known to be possible for a wide region of the ($B,Δ$)-space, many of these configurations could not form in practice because deconfinement is forbidden, i.e. the here studied non-$β$-stable \emph{intermediate} state cannot be reached.

Self-bound CFL stars in binary systems : are they "hidden" among the black hole candidates?

The identification of black holes is one of the most important tasks of modern astrophysics. Candidates have been selected among binary stars based on a high mass function, and seriously considered when the lower mass limit exceeds ~ 3 solar masses. More recently the absence of (Type I) thermonuclear bursts has been advanced as an additional criterion in favor of the black hole interpretation, since the absence of a solid surface naturally precludes the accumulation and ignition of accreting material. We discuss in this Letter the possibility that self-bound stars made of CFL-paired quarks mimic the behavior of at least the low-mass end black holes as a result of a) higher maximum masses than ordinary neutron stars b) low steady luminosities due to the bare surface properties c) impossibility of generating Type I bursts because of the complete absence of normal matter crusts at their surfaces. These features caution about a positive identification of event horizons based on the lack of bursts.

Another Decade of Strange Quark Matter (ASTRO) Physics

We present a perspective of strange quark matter research in the 1991-2001 decade focused on astrophysics topics, with particular attention to open problems. We outline the basic concepts and developments in the field, paying attention to the established research and promising perspectives. An analysis of the whole literature (experimental searches, theory, astrophysical/cosmological) serves to point out some general trends, supported by a fairy complete statistical sample of published works.

Primordial nuggets survival and QCD pairing

We revisit the problem of boiling and surface evaporation of quark nuggets in the cosmological quark-hadron transition with the explicit consideration of pairing between quarks in a color-flavor locked (CFL) state. Assuming that primordial quark nuggets are actually formed, we analyze the consequences of pairing on the rates of boiling and surface evaporation in order to determine whether they could have survived with substantial mass. We find a substantial quenching of the evaporation + boiling processes, which suggests the survival of primordial nuggets for the currently considered range of the pairing gap $Δ$. Boiling is shown to depend on the competition of an increased stability window and the suppression of the rate, and is not likely to dominate the destruction of the nuggets. If surface evaporation dominates, the fate of the nuggets depend on the features of the initial mass spectrum of the nuggets, their evaporation rate, and the value of the pairing gap, as shown and discussed in the text.

High-density QCD pairing in compact star structure

Strange quark matter in a color flavor locked (CFL) state can be the true ground state of hadronic matter for a much wider range of the parameters of the model (the gap of the QCD Cooper pairs $Δ$, the strange quark mass $m_s$ and the Bag Constant $B$) than the state without any pairing. We review the equation of state (EOS) of CFL strange matter and study the structure of stellar objects made up of this phase, highlighting the novel features of the latter. Although the effects of pairing on the equation of state are thought to be small, we find that CFL stars may be in fact much more compact than strange stars (SS). This feature may be relevant in view of some recent observation claiming the existence of exotic and/or deconfined phases in some nearby neutron stars (NS).

Quark-Diquark Equations of State Models: The Role of Interactions

Recent observational data suggests a high compacticity (the quotient M/R) of some "neutron" stars. Motivated by these works we revisit models based on quark-diquark degrees of freedom and address the question of whether that matter is stable against diquark disassembling and hadronization within the different models. We find that equations of state modeled as effective $λϕ^{4}$ theories do not generally produce stable self-bound matter and are not suitable for constructing very compact star models, that is the matter would decay into neutron matter. We also discuss some insights obtained by including hard sphere terms in the equation of state to model repulsive interactions. We finally compare the resulting equations of state with previous models and emphasize the role of the boundary conditions at the surface of compact self-bound stars, features of a possible normal crust of the latter and related topics.

Asymmetric core combustion in neutron stars and a potential mechanism for gamma ray bursts

We study the transition of nuclear matter to strange quark matter (SQM) inside neutron stars (NSs). It is shown that the influence of the magnetic field expected to be present in NS interiors has a dramatic effect on the propagation of a laminar deflagration (widely studied so far), generating a strong acceleration of the flame in the polar direction. This results in a strong asymmetry in the geometry of the just formed core of hot SQM which resembles a cylinder orientated in the direction of the magnetic poles of the NS. This geometrical asymmetry gives rise to a bipolar emission of the thermal neutrino-antineutrino pairs produced in the process of SQM formation. The neutrino-antineutrino pairs annihilate into electron-positron pairs just above the polar caps of the NS giving rise to a relativistic fireball, thus providing a suitable form of energy transport and conversion to gamma emission that may be associated to short gamma ray bursts (GRBs).

Color-flavor locked strange matter

We analyze how the CFL states in dense matter work in the direction of enhancing the parameter space for absolutely stable phases (strange matter). We find that the "CFL strange matter" phase can be the true ground state of hadronic matter for a much wider range of the parameters of the model (the gap of the QCD Cooper pairs $Δ$, the strange quark mass $m_s$ and the Bag Constant $B$) than the state without any pairing, and derive a full equation of state and an accurate analytic approximation to the lowest order in $Δ$ and $m_{s}$ which may be directly used for applications. The effects of pairing on the equation of state are found to be small (as previously expected) but not negligible and may be relevant for astrophysics.

Quark-diquark equation of state and compact star structure

(abridged) We construct quark-diquark equations of state using the quark mass density-dependent formalism. A region inside a $2-D$ parameter space in which this matter is absolutely stable is identified. Motivated by the reported compactness of some neutron star candidates we present stellar sequences and show that the quark-diquark EOSs allow a very compact structure, even in the cases in which the diquark itself is not bound.
