Phases of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate with anharmonic confinement

We examine an effectively repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms that rotates in a quadratic-plus-quartic potential. With use of a variational method we identify the three possible phases of the system (multiple quantization, single quantization, and a mixed phase) as a function of the rotational frequency of the gas and of the coupling constant. The derived phase diagram is shown to be universal and the continuous transitions to be exact in the limit of weak coupling and small anharmonicity. The variational results are found to be consistent with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates with anharmonic confinement

We examine an effectively repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms, that rotates in a quadratic-plus-quartic trapping potential. We investigate the phase diagram of the system as a function of the angular frequency of rotation and of the coupling constant, demonstrating that there are phase transitions between multiply- and singly-quantized vortex states. The derived phase diagram is shown to be universal and exact in the limits of small anharmonicity and weak coupling constant.

Effectively attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating toroidal trap

We examine an effectively attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a rotating toroidal trap, as the magnitude of the coupling constant and the rotational frequency are varied. Using both a variational mean-field approach, as well as a diagonalization technique, we identify the phase diagram between a uniform and a localized state and we describe the system in the two phases.

Bose-Einstein condensation of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells

We study the ground-state properties of a quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of indirect excitons, which are confined in an anisotropic harmonic potential. Incorporating the interactions, we calculate the order parameter variationally. The difficulties in the detection of a Bose-Einstein condensate are also discussed, along with possible ways which would overcome them.

Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions on a ring

Considering an effectively attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a toroidal trap, we find that the system undergoes a phase transition from a uniform to a localized state, as the magnitude of the coupling constant increases. Both the mean-field approximation, as well as a diagonalization scheme are used to attack the problem.

Propagation of exciton pulses in semiconductors

Using a toy model, we examine the propagation of excitons in Cu$_2$O, which form localized pulses under certain experimental conditions. The formation of these waves is attributed to the effect of dispersion, non-linearity and the coupling of the excitons to phonons, which acts as a dissipative mechanism.

Comment on ``Fragmented Condensate Ground State of Trapped Weakly Interacting Bosons in Two Dimensions"

Recently Liu et al. [PRL 87, 030404 (2001)] examined the lowest state of a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. In addition to other interesting results, using the method of the pair correlation function, they questioned the validity of the mean-field picture of the formation of vortices and stated that the vortices are generated at the center of the cloud. This is in apparent contradiction to the Gross-Pitaevskii approach, which predicts that the vortices successively enter the cloud from its outer parts as L/N (where N is the number of atoms in the trap and hbar(L) is the angular momentum of the system) increases. We have managed to reproduce the results of Liu et al. however a more careful analysis presented below confirms the validity of the mean-field approach.

Lieb Mode in a Quasi One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate of Atoms

We calculate the dispersion relation associated with a solitary wave in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a harmonic, cylindrical trap in the limit of weak and strong interactions. In both cases, the dispersion relation is linear for long wavelength excitations and terminates at the point where the group velocity vanishes. We also calculate the dispersion relation of sound waves in both limits of weak and strong coupling.

Bose-Einstein condensates in strong electric fields -- effective gauge potentials and rotating states

Magnetically-trapped atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates are spin polarized. Since the magnetic field is inhomogeneous, the atoms aquire Berry phases of the Aharonov-Bohm type during adiabatic motion. In the presence of an eletric field there is an additional Aharonov-Casher effect. Taking into account the limitations on the strength of the electric fields due to the polarizability of the atoms, we investigate the extent to which these effects can be used to induce rotation in a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Stability of rotating states in a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the lowest state of a rotating, weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a harmonic confining potential that is driven by an infinitesimally asymmetric perturbation. Although in an axially-symmetric confining potential the gas has an axially-symmetric single-particle density distribution, we show that in the presence of the small asymmetric perturbation its lowest state is the one given by the mean-field approximation, which is a broken-symmetric state. We also estimate the rate of relaxation of angular momentum when the gas is no longer driven by the asymmetric perturbation and identify two regimes of "slow" and "fast" relaxation. States of certain symmetry are found to be more robust.

Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in Cu$_2$O

We present a parameter-free model which estimates the density of excitons in Cu$_2$O, related to experiments that have tried to create an excitonic Bose-Einstein condensate. Our study demonstrates that the triplet-state excitons move along adiabats and obey classical statistics, while the singlet-state excitons are a possible candidate for forming a Bose-Einstein condensate. Finally we show that the results of this study do not change qualitatively in a two-dimensional exciton gas, which can be realized in a quantum well.

Low-lying excitations of a trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the low-lying excitations of a weakly-interacting, harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas under rotation, in the limit where the angular mometum $L$ of the system is much less than the number of the atoms $N$ in the trap. We show that in the asymptotic limit $N \to \infty$ the excitation energy, measured from the energy of the lowest state, is given by $27 N_{3}(N_{3}-1) v_0 /68$, where $N_{3}$ is the number of octupole excitations and $v_{0}$ is the unit of the interaction energy.

Probing Bose-Einstein Condensation of Excitons with Electromagnetic Radiation

We examine the absorption spectrum of electromagnetic radiation from excitons, where an exciton in the $1s$ state absorbs a photon and makes a transition to the $2p$ state. We demonstrate that the absorption spectrum depends strongly on the quantum degeneracy of the exciton gas, and that it will generally manifest many-body effects. Based on our results we propose that absorption of infrared radiation could resolve recent contradictory experimental results on excitons in Cu$_2$O.

Analytical results for a trapped, weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate under rotation

We examine the problem of a repulsive, weakly-interacting and harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate under rotation. We derive a simple analytic expression for the energy incorporating the interactions when the angular momentum per particle is between zero and one and find that the interaction energy decreases linearly as a function of the angular momentum in agreement with previous numerical and limiting analytical studies.

Weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensates under rotation

We investigate the ground and low excited states of a rotating, weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensed gas in a harmonic trap for a given angular momentum. Analytical results in various limits, as well as numerical results are presented, and these are compared with those of previous studies. Within the mean-field approximation and for repulsive interaction between the atoms, we find that for very low values of the total angular momentum per particle, $L/N \to 0$, where $L \hbar$ is the angular momentum and $N$ is the total number of particles, the angular momentum is carried by quadrupolar ($|m| = 2$) surface modes. For $L/N =1$ a vortex-like state is formed and all the atoms occupy the $m=1$ state. For small negative values of $L/N-1$ the states with $m=0$ and $m=2$ become populated, and for small positive values of $L/N-1$ atoms in the states with $m=5$ and $m=6$ carry the additional angular momentum. In the whole region $0 \le L/N \le 1$ we have strong analytic and numerical evidence that the interaction energy drops linearly as a function of $L/N$. We have also found that an array of singly quantized vortices is formed as $L/N$ increases. Finally we have gone beyond the mean-field approximation and have calculated the energy of the lowest state up to order $N$ for small negative values of $L/N-1$, as well as the energy of the low-lying excited states.

Weakly Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates Under Rotation: Mean-field versus Exact Solutions

We consider a weakly-interacting, harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas under rotation and investigate the connection between the energies obtained from mean-field calculations and from exact diagonalizations in a subspace of degenerate states. From the latter we derive an approximation scheme valid in the thermodynamic limit of many particles. Mean-field results are shown to emerge as the correct leading-order approximation to exact calculations in the same subspace.

Auger decay, Spin-exchange, and their connection to Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in Cu_2O

In view of the recent experiments of O'Hara, et al. on excitons in Cu_2O, we examine the interconversion between the angular-momentum triplet-state excitons and the angular-momentum singlet-state excitons by a spin-exchange process which has been overlooked in the past. We estimate the rate of this particle-conserving mechanism and find a substantially higher value than the Auger process considered so far. Based on this idea, we give a possible explanation of the recent experimental observations, and make certain predictions, with the most important being that the singlet-state excitons in Cu_2O is a very serious candidate for exhibiting the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation.

Collisional relaxation in diffuse clouds of trapped bosons

The damping of collective modes and the relaxation of temperature anisotropies in a trapped Bose gas is determined at temperatures above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature in the collisionless regime. We demonstrate for both cases how the effects of collisions may be treated perturbatively and calculate relaxation rates based on a variational principle. Our results are compared with experiment and with previous theoretical calculations.
