Hybridization gap versus hidden order gap in URu$_2$Si$_2$ as revealed by optical spectroscopy

We present the in-plane optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of URu$_2$As$_2$. The study revealed a strong temperature-dependent spectral evolution. Above 50 K, the low frequency optical conductivity is rather flat without a clear Drude-like response, indicating a very short transport life time of the free carriers. Well below the coherence temperature, there appears an abrupt spectral weight suppression below 400 cm$^{-1}$, yielding evidence for the formation of a hybridization energy gap arising from the mixing of the conduction electron and narrow f-electron bands. A small part of the suppressed spectral weight was transferred to the low frequency side, leading to a narrow Drude component, while the majority of the suppressed spectral weight was transferred to the high frequency side centered near 4000 cm$^{-1}$. Below the hidden order temperature, another very prominent energy gap structure was observed, which leads to the removal of a large part of the Drude component and a sharp reduction of the carrier scattering rate. The study revealed that the hybridization gap and the hidden orger gap are distinctly different: they occur at different energy scales and exhibit completely different spectral characteristics.

Spin Ice: Magnetic Excitations without Monopole Signatures using Muon Spin Rotation

Theory predicts the low-temperature magnetic excitations in spin ices consist of deconfined magnetic charges, or monopoles. A recent transverse-field (TF) muon spin rotation (muSR) experiment [S T Bramwell et al, Nature 461, 956 (2009)] reports results claiming to be consistent with the temperature and magnetic field dependence anticipated for monopole nucleation - the so-called second Wien effect. We demonstrate via a new series of muSR experiments in Dy_2Ti_2O_7 that such an effect is not observable in a TF muSR experiment. Rather, as found in many highly frustrated magnetic materials, we observe spin fluctuations which become temperature independent at low temperatures, behavior which dominates over any possible signature of thermally nucleated monopole excitations.

Magnetism in superconducting EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$ single crystals studied by local probes

We have studied the magnetism in superconducting single crystals of EuFe2 As1.4 P0.6 by using the local probe techniques of zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation and 151 Eu/57 Fe Mössbauer spec- troscopy. All of these measurements reveal magnetic hyperfine fields below the magnetic ordering temperature TM = 18 K of the Eu2+ moments. The analysis of the data shows that there is a coexistence of ferromagnetism, resulting from Eu2+ moments ordered along the crystallographic c-axis, and superconductivity below TSC \approx 15 K. We find indications for a change in the dynamics of the small Fe magnetic moments (\sim 0.07 μB) at the onset of superconductivity: below TSC the Fe magnetic moments seem to be "frozen" within the ab-plane.

Absence of static magnetic order in lightly-doped Ti1-xScxOCl down to 1.7 K

Impurity-induced magnetic order has been observed in many quasi-1D systems including doped variants of the spin-Peierls system CuGeO3. TiOCl is another quasi-1D quantum magnet with a spin-Peierls ground state, and the magnetic Ti sites of this system can be doped with non-magnetic Sc. To investigate the role of non-magnetic impurities in this system, we have performed both zero field and longitudinal field muSR experiments on polycrystalline Ti1-xScxOCl samples with x = 0, 0.01, and 0.03. We verified that TiOCl has a non-magnetic ground state, and we found no evidence for spin freezing or magnetic ordering in the lightly-doped Sc samples down to 1.7 K. Our results instead suggest that these systems remain non-magnetic up to the x = 0.03 Sc doping level.

Static magnetic order of Sr$_{4}$A$_{2}$O$_{6}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Sc and V) revealed by local probes

Static magnetic order of quasi two-dimensional FeAs compounds Sr4A2O6-xFe2As2, with A = Sc and V, has been detected by 57Fe Moessbauer and muon spin relaxation (μSR) spectroscopies. The non-superconducting stoichiometric (x = 0) A = Sc system exhibits a static internal/hyperfine magnetic field both at the 57Fe and μ+ sites, indicating antiferromagnetic order of Fe moments below TN = 35 K with ~ 0.1 Bohr magneton per Fe at T = 2 K. The superconducting and oxygen deficient (x = 0.4) A = V system exhibits a static internal field only at the μ+ site below TN ~ 40 K, indicating static magnetic order of V moments co-existing with superconductivity without freezing of Fe moments. These results suggest that the 42622 FeAs systems belong to the same paradigm with the 1111 and 122 FeAs systems with respect to magnetic behavior of Fe moments.

Superfluid Density and Field-Induced Magnetism in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 and Sr(Fe1-xCox)2As2 Measured with Muon Spin Relaxation

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. From measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $λ$ we find that for optimally- and over-doped samples, $1/λ(T\to 0)^2$ varies monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature T$_{\rm C}$. Within the superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is present for all Co concentrations studied.

Magnetic phase transition in V2O3 nanocrystals

V2O3 nanocrystals can be synthesized through hydrothermal reduction of VO(OH)2 using hydrazine as a reducing agent. Addition of different ligands to the reaction produces nanoparticles, nanorods and nanoplatelets of different sizes. Small nanoparticles synthesized in this manner show suppression of the magnetic phase transition to lower temperatures. Using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, it is determined that the volume fraction of the high-temperature phase, characterized by a rhombohedral structure and paramagnetism, gradually declines with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the sharp transition observed in bulk V2O3.

Muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Mg10Ir19B16

We have searched for time-reversal symmetry breaking fields in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Mg$_{10}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ via muon spin relaxation in zero applied field, and we measured the temperature dependence of the superfluid density by muon spin rotation in transverse field to investigate the superconducting pairing symmetry in two polycrystalline samples of signficantly different purities. In the high purity sample, we detected no time-reversal symmetry breaking fields greater than 0.05 G. The superfluid density was also found to be exponentially-flat as T$\to $0, and so can be fit to a single-gap BCS model. In contrast, the lower purity sample showed an increase in the zero-field $μ$SR relaxation rate below T$_c$ corresponding to a characteristic field strength of 0.6 G. While the temperature-dependence of the superfluid density was also found to be consistent with a single-gap BCS model, the magnitude as T$\to $0 was found to be much lower for a given applied field than in the case of the high purity sample. These findings suggest that the dominant pairing symmetry in high quality Mg$_{10}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ samples corresponds to the spin-singlet channel, while sample quality drastically affects the superconducting properties of this system.

Magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated S=1/2 antiferromagnets, La2LiMoO6 and Ba2YMoO6, with the B-site ordered double perovskite structure: Evidence for a Collective Spin Singlet Ground State

Two B-site ordered double perovskites, La2LiMoO6 and Ba2YMoO6, based on the S = 1/2 ion, Mo5+, have been investigated in the context of geometric magnetic frustration. Powder neutron diffraction, heat capacity, susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(_SR), and 89Y NMR- including MAS NMR- data have been collected. La2LiMoO6 deviates strongly from simple Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior below 150K and zero-field cooled/ field cooled (ZFC/FC)irreversibility occurs below 20K with a weak, broad susceptibility maximum near 5K in the ZFC data. A Curie-Weiss fit shows a reduced mu_eff=1.42μ_B, (spin only = 1.73 muB) and a Weiss temperature, θ_c, which depends strongly on the temperature range of the fit. Powder neutron diffraction, heat capacity and 7Li NMR show no evidence for long range magnetic order to 2K. On the other hand oscillations develop below 20K in muSR indicating at least short range magnetic correlations. Susceptibility data for Ba2YMoO6 also deviate strongly from the C-W law below 150K with a similarly reduced mu_eff = 1.72μ_B and θ_c = - 219(1)K. Heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction and muSR data show no evidence for long range order to 2K but a very broad maximum appears in the heat capacity. The 89Y NMR paramagnetic Knight shift shows a remarkable local spin susceptibility behavior below about 70K with two components from roughly equal sample volumes, one indicating a singlet state and the other a strongly fluctuating paramagnetic state. Further evidence for a singlet state comes from the behavior of the relaxation rate, 1/T1. These results are discussed and compared with those from other isostructural S = 1/2 materials and those based on S = 3/2 and S = 1.

Muon Spin Rotation Measurements of Heterogeneous Field Response in Overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4

Transverse-field muon spin rotation measurements of overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 reveal a large broadening of the local magnetic field distribution in response to applied field, persisting to high temperatures. The field-response is approximately Curie-Weiss like in temperature and is largest for the highest doping investigated. Such behaviour is contrary to the canonical Fermi-liquid picture commonly associated with the overdoped cuprates and implies extensive heterogeneity in this region of the phase diagram. A possible explanation for the result lies in regions of staggered magnetization about dopant cations, analogous to what is argued to exist in underdoped systems.

75As NMR study of single crystals of the heavily overdoped pnictide superconductors Ba{1-x}KxFe2As2 (x = 0.7 and 1)

We performed $^{75}$As NMR studies on two overdoped high-quality Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.7 and 1.0) single crystals. In the normal states, we found a dramatic increase of the spin-lattice relaxation ($1/^{75}T_1$) from the x=0.7 to the x=1.0 samples. In KFe$_2$As$_2$, the ratio of $1/^{75}T_1TK_n^2$, where $^{75}K_n$ is the Knight shift, increases as temperature drops. These results indicate the existence of a new type of spin fluctuations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ which is accustomed to being treated as a simple Fermi liquid. In the superconducting state, we observe a step-like feature in the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation of the x=0.7 sample, which supports a two-gap superconductivity as the underdoped materials. However, the temperature scalings of $1/^{75}T_1$ below Tc in the overdoped samples are significantly different from those in the under or optimal doped ones. A power-law scaling behavior $1/^{75}T_1T\sim T^{0.5}$ is observed, which indicates universal strong low energy excitations in the overdoped hole-type superconductors.

Study of the ground state properties of $LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4$ using $μ$SR

$LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4$ is an insulating system where the magnetic Ho$^{3+}$ ions have an Ising character, and interact mainly through magnetic dipolar fields. We used the muon spin relaxation technique to study the nature of the ground state for samples with x=0.25, 0.12, 0.08, 0.045 and 0.018. In contrast with some previous works, we have not found any signature of canonical spin glass behavior down to $\approx$15mK. Instead, below $\approx$300mK we observed dynamic magnetism characterized by a single correlation time with a temperature independent fluctuation rate. We observed that this low temperature fluctuation rate increases with x up to 0.08, above which it levels off. The 300mK energy scale corresponds to the Ho3+ hyperfine interaction strength, suggesting that the hyperfine interaction may be intimately involved with the spin dynamics in this system.

Field-induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of triplons up to 8 K in Sr3Cr2O8

Single crystals of the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 have been grown for the first time. Magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetocaloric effect data up to 65 T reveal magnetic order between applied fields of Hc1 ~ 30.4 T and Hc2 ~ 62 T. This field-induced order persists up to ~ 8 K at H ~ 44 T, the highest observed in any quantum magnet where Hc2 is experimentally-accessible. We fit the temperature-field phase diagram boundary close to Hc1 using the expression Tc = A(H-Hc1)^v. The exponent v = 0.65(2), obtained at temperatures much smaller than 8 K, is that of the 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) universality class. This finding strongly suggests that Sr3Cr2O8 is a new realization of a triplon BEC where the universal regimes corresponding to both Hc1 and Hc2 are accessible at He-4 temperatures.

Muon Spin Rotation Measurement of the Magnetic Field Penetration Depth in Ba(Fe0.93 Co0.07)2 As2 : Evidence for Multiple Superconducting Gaps

We have performed transverse field muon spin rotation measurements of single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07})_2$As$_2$ with the applied magnetic field along the $\hat{c}$ direction. Fourier transforms of the measured spectra reveal an anisotropic lineshape characteristic of an Abrikosov vortex lattice. We have fit the $μ$SRSR spectra to a microscopic model in terms of the penetration depth $λ$ and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$. We find that as a function of temperature, the penetration depth varies more rapidly than in standard weak coupled BCS theory. For this reason we first fit the temperature dependence to a power law where the power varies from 1.6 to 2.2 as the field changes from 200G to 1000G. Due to the surprisingly strong field dependence of the power and the superfluid density we proceeded to fit the temperature dependence to a two gap model, where the size of the two gaps is field independent. From this model, we obtained gaps of $2Δ_1=3.7k_BT_c$ and $2Δ_2=1.6k_BT_c$, corresponding to roughly 6 meV and 3 meV respectively.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Triplons in Ba3Cr2O8

By performing heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect, torque magnetometry and force magnetometry measurements up to 33 T, we have mapped out the T-H phase diagram of the S = 1/2 spin dimer compound Ba3Cr2O8. We found evidence for field-induced magnetic order between Hc1 = 12.52(2) T and Hc2 = 23.65(5) T, with the maximum transition temperature Tc = 2.7 K at H = 18 T. The lower transition can likely be described by Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons theory, and this is consistent with the absence of any magnetization plateaus in our magnetic torque and force measurements. In contrast, the nature of the upper phase transition appears to be quite different as our measurements suggest that this transition is actually first order.

$μ$SR studies of the frustrated quasi-2d square-lattice spin system Cu(Cl,Br)La(Nb,Ta)$_{2}$O$_{7}$: evolution from spin-gap to antiferromagnetic state

We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements on Cu(Cl,Br)La(Nb,Ta)$_{2}$O$_{7}$, which demonstrate: (a) the absence of static magnetism in (CuCl)LaNb$_{2}$O$_{7}$ down to 15 mK confirming a spin-gapped ground state; (b) phase separation between partial volumes with a spin-gap and static magnetism in (CuCl)La(Nb,Ta)$_{2}$O$_{7}$; (c) history-dependent magnetization in the (Nb,Ta) and (Cl,Br) substitution systems; (d) a uniform long-range collinear antiferromagnetic state in (CuBr)LaNb$_{2}$O$_{7}$; and (e) a decrease of Néel temperature with decreasing Br concentration $x$ in Cu(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)LaNb$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with no change in the ordered Cu moment size for $0.33 \leq x \leq 1$. Together with several other $μ$SR studies of quantum phase transitions in geometrically-frustrated spin systems, the present results reveal that the evolution from a spin-gap to a magnetically ordered state is often associated with phase separation and/or a first order phase transition.

The Absence of Superconductivity in Single Phase CaFe2As2 under Hydrostatic Pressure

Recent high-pressure studies found that superconductivity can be achieved under very low pressure in the parent iron arsenide compound CaFe2As2, although details of the sharpness and temperature of transitions vary between liquid medium and gas medium measurements. To better understand this issue, we performed high-pressure susceptibility and transport studies on CaFe2As2, using helium as the pressure medium. The signatures of the transitions to the low-temperature orthorhombic and collapsed tetragonal phase remained exceptionally sharp and no signature of bulk superconductivity was found under our hydrostatic conditions. Our results suggest that phase separation and superconductivity in CaFe2As2 are induced by non-hydrostatic conditions associated with the frozen liquid media.
