Space-time symmetry restoration in cosmological models with Kalb--Ramond and scalar fields

We study symmetry of space-time in presence of a minimally coupled scalar field interacting with a Kalb--Ramond tensor fields in a homogeneous but initially anisotropic universe. The analysis is performed for the two relevant cases of a pure cosmological constant and a minimal quadratic, renormalizable, interaction term. In both cases, due to expansion, a complete spatial symmetry restoration is dynamically obtained.

WARP liquid argon detector for dark matter survey

The WARP programme is a graded programme intended to search for cold Dark Matter in the form of WIMP's. These particles may produce via weak interactions nuclear recoils in the energy range 10-100 keV. A cryogenic noble liquid like argon, already used in the realization of very large detector, permits the simultaneous detection of both ionisation and scintillation induced by an interaction, suggesting the possibility of discriminating between nuclear recoils and electrons mediated events. A 2.3 litres two-phase argon detector prototype has been used to perform several tests on the proposed technique. Next step is the construction of a 100 litres sensitive volume device with potential sensitivity a factor 100 better than presently existing experiments.

Present status of primordial nucleosynthesis after WMAP: results from a new BBN code

We report on the status of primordial nucleosynthesis in light of recent results on CMB anisotropies from WMAP experiment. Theoretical estimates for nuclei abundances, along with the corresponding uncertainties, are evaluated using a new numerical code, where all nuclear rates usually considered have been updated using the most recent available data. Moreover, additional processes, neglected in previous calculations, have been included. The combined analysis of CMB and primordial nucleosynthesis prediction for Deuterium gives an effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom in good agreement with the simplest scenario of three non degenerate neutrinos. Our findings seem to point out possible systematics affecting 4He mass fraction measurements, or the effect of exotic physics, like a slightly degenerate relic neutrino background.

Evolution and nucleosynthesis of primordial low mass stars

We discuss in detail the evolutionary properties of low mass stars M< 1 M(Solar) having metallicity lower than Z=10^(-6) from the pre- main sequence up to (almost) the end of the Asymptotic Giant Branch phase. We also discuss the possibility that the large [C,N/Fe] observed on the surface of the most Iron poor star presently known, HE0107-5240, may be attributed to the autopollution induced by the penetration of the He convective shell into the H rich mantle during the He core flash of a low mass, very low metallicity star. On the basis of a quite detailed analysis, we conclude that the autopollution scenario cannot be responsible for the observed chemical composition of HE0107-5240.

Neutrino energy loss rate in a stellar plasma

We review the purely leptonic neutrino emission processes, contributing to the energy loss rate of the stellar plasma. We perform a complete analysis up to the first order in the electromagnetic coupling constant. In particular the radiative electromagnetic corrections, at order $α$, to the process $e^+ e^- -> ν\barν$ at finite density and temperature have been computed. This process gives one of the main contributions to the cooling of stellar interior in the late stages of star evolution. As a result of the analysis we find that the corrections affect the energy loss rate, computed at tree level, by a factor $(-4 ÷1) %$ in the temperature and density region where the pair annihilation is the most efficient cooling mechanism.

Coupled quintessence and the coincidence problem

We consider a model of interacting cosmological constant/quintessence, where dark matter and dark energy behave as, respectively, two coexisting phases of a fluid, a thermally excited Bose component and a condensate, respectively. In a simple phenomenological model for the dark components interaction we find that their energy density evolution is strongly coupled during the universe evolution. This feature provides a possible way out for the coincidence problem affecting many quintessence models.

A precision calculation of the effective number of cosmological neutrinos

The neutrino energy density of the Universe can be conveniently parametrized in terms of the so-called effective number of neutrinos, N_nu^eff. This parameter enters in several cosmological observables. In particular it is an important input in those numerical codes, like CMBFAST, which are used to study the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy spectrum. By studying the neutrino decoupling with Boltzmann equations, one can show that this quantity differs from the number of massless neutrino species for an additional contribution due to a partial heating of neutrinos during the electron-positron annihilations, leading to non thermal features in their final distributions. In this paper we review the different results obtained in the literature and perform a new analysis which takes into account, in a fully consistent way, the QED corrections at finite temperature to the photon and e^+- plasma equation of state. The value found for three massless active neutrinos is N_nu^eff=3.0395, in perfect agreement with the recommended value used in CMBFAST, N_nu^eff=3.04. We also discuss the case of additional relativistic relics and massive active neutrinos.

Radiative corrections to neutrino energy loss rate in stellar interiors

We consider radiative electromagnetic corrections, at order α, to the process $e^+ e^- \to ν\barν$ at finite density and temperature. This process represents one of the main contributions to the cooling of stellar environments in the late stages of star evolution. We find that these corrections affect the energy loss rate by a factor $(-4 ÷1) %$ with respect to the tree level estimate, in the temperature and density ranges where the neutrino pair production via e^+ e^- annihilation is the most efficient cooling mechanism.

Bose Einstein condensation at reheating

We discuss the possibility that a perturbative reheating stage after inflation produces a scalar particle gas in a Bose condensate state, emphasizing the possible cosmological role of this phenomenon for symmetry restoration.

Early-universe constraints on a time-varying fine structure constant

Higher-dimensional theories have the remarkable feature of predicting a time (and hence redshift) dependence of the `fundamental' four dimensional constants on cosmological timescales. In this paper we update the bounds on a possible variation of the fine structure constant alpha at the time of BBN (z =10^10) and CMB (z=10^3). Using the recently-released high-resolution CMB anisotropy data and the latest estimates of primordial abundances of 4He and D, we do not find evidence for a varying alpha at more than one-sigma level at either epoch.

Constraining neutrino physics with BBN and CMBR

We perform a likelihood analysis of the recent results on the anisotropy of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation from the BOOMERanG and DASI experiments to show that they single out an effective number of neutrinos in good agreement with standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We also consider degenerate Big Bang Nucleosynthesis to provide new bounds on effective relativistic degrees of freedom $N_ν$ and, in particular, on neutrino chemical potential $ξ_α$. When including Supernova Ia data we find, at $2σ$, $N_ν\leq 7$ and $-0.01 \leq ξ_e \leq 0.22$, $|ξ_{μ,τ}|\leq 2.6$.

Primordial Nucleosynthesis, Cosmic Microwave Background and Neutrinos

We report the results of a recent likelihood analysis combining the primordial nucleosynthesis and the BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1 data on cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies. We discuss the possible implications for relic neutrino background of a high value for the baryonic matter content of the universe, larger than what is expected in a standard nucleosynthesis scenario.

The standard and degenerate primordial nucleosynthesis versus recent experimental data

We report the results on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) based on an updated code, with accuracy of the order of 0.1% on He4 abundance, compared with the predictions of other recent similar analysis. We discuss the compatibility of the theoretical results, for vanishing neutrino chemical potentials, with the observational data. Bounds on the number of relativistic neutrinos and baryon abundance are obtained by a likelihood analysis. We also analyze the effect of large neutrino chemical potentials on primordial nucleosynthesis, motivated by the recent results on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation spectrum. The BBN exclusion plots for electron neutrino chemical potential and the effective number of relativistic neutrinos are reported. We find that the standard BBN seems to be only marginally in agreement with the recent BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-1 results, while the agreement is much better for degenerate BBN scenarios for large effective number of neutrinos, N_ν\sim 10.

Testing Standard and Degenerate Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1

We test different Big Bang Nucleosynthesis scenarios using the recent results on the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies provided by the BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1 experiments versus the observed abundances of 4He, D and 7Li. The likelihood analysis, based on Bayesian approach, shows that, in the case of high deuterium abundance, Y_D=(2.0\pm0.5) 10^{-4}, both standard and degenerate BBN are inconsistent with the CMBR measurement at more than 3 σ. Assuming low deuterium abundance, Y_D=(3.4\pm0.3) 10^{-5}, the standard BBN model is still inconsistent with present observations at 2 σlevel, while the degenerate BBN results to be compatible. Unless systematics effects will be found in nuclide abundances and/or in CMBR data analysis this result may be a signal in favour of new physics like a large chemical potential of the relic neutrino-antineutrino background.

Unstable Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and Leptogenesis

We propose a new mechanism producing a non-vanishing lepton number asymmetry, based on decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos. If they are produced out of equilibrium, as occurs in preheating scenario, and are superpositions of mass eigenstates rapidly decaying, their decay rates contains interference terms provided the mass differences $Δm$ are small compared to widths $Γ$. The resulting lepton asymmetry, which is the analogue of the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $B^0-\bar{B}^0$ system, is found to be proportional to $Δm/Γ$.
