A flash in the dark: UVES/VLT high resolution spectroscopy of GRB afterglows

We present the first high resolution (R=20000--45000, corresponding to 14 km/s at 4200A to 6.6 km/s at 9000A) observations of the optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB020813 and GRB021004 were observed by UVES@VLT 22.19 hours and 13.52 hours after the trigger, respectively. These spectra show that the inter--stellar matter of the GRB host galaxies is complex, with many components contributing to each main absorption system, and spanning a total velocity range of up to about 3000 km/s. Several narrow components are resolved down to a width of a few tens of km/s. In the case of GRB021004 we detected both low and high ionization lines. Combined with photoionization results obtained with CLOUDY, the ionization parameters of the various systems are consistent with a remarkably narrow range with no clear trend with system velocity. This can be interpreted as due to density fluctuations on top of a regular R^-2 wind density profile.

UVES observations of the Canis Major overdensity

We present the first detailed chemical abundances for three giant stars which are candidate members of the Canis Major overdensity, obtained by using FLAMES-UVES at VLT. The stars, in the background of the open cluster NGC 2477, have radial velocities compatible with a membership to this structure. However, due to Galactic disc contamination, radial velocity by itself is unable to firmly establish membership. The metallicities span the range -0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.1. Assuming that at least one of the three stars is indeed a member of CMa implies that this structure has undergone a high level of chemical processing, comparable to that of the Galactic disc. The most metal-rich star of the sample, EIS 6631, displays several abundance ratios which are remarkably different from those of Galactic stars: [alpha/Fe] ~-0.2, [Cu/Fe] ~+0.25, [La/Fe]~+0.6, [Ce/Fe]~+0.8 and [Nd/Fe]~+0.6. These ratios make it likely that this star was formed in an external galaxy.

Taking the pulse of the shortest orbital period binary system RX J0806.3+1527

RX J0806.3+1527 is thought to be a 321s orbital period (the shortest known) double white dwarf binary system. According to the double degenerate binary (DDB) scenario this source is expected to be one of the strongest gravitational wave (GW) emitter candidates. In the last years RX J0806.3+1527 has been studied in great details, through multiwavelength observational campaigns and from the point of view of data analysis result interpretations. We present here the timing results obtained thanks to a 3.5-year long optical monitoring campaign carried out by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) which allowed us to detect and study the orbital period derivative (spin-up at a rate of about 10^-3 s/yr) of the 321s modulation, to detect the linear polarisation (at a level of about 2%), and to study the broad band energy spectrum. The VLT/TNG observational strategy we used allowed us to rely upon a P-Pdot coherent solution which we finally extended backward to the 1994 ROSAT observation of RX J0806.3+1527.

Indirect evidence for an active radio pulsar in the quiescent state of the transient ms pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658

Millisecond radio pulsars are neutron stars that have been spun-up by the transfer of angular momentum during the low-mass X-ray binary phase. The transition from an accretion-powered to a rotation-powered pulsar takes place on evolutionary timescales at the end of the accretion process, however it may also occur sporadically in systems undergoing transient X-ray activity. We have obtained the first optical spectrum of the low mass transient X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 in quiescence. Similar to the black widow millisecond pulsar B1957+20, this X-ray pulsar shows a large optical modulation at the orbital period due to an irradiated companion star. Using the brightness of the companion star as a bolometer, we conclude that a very high irradiating luminosity, a factor of ~100 larger than directly observed, must be present in the system. This most likely derives from a rotation-powered neutron star that resumes activity during quiescence.

Berkeley 29, the most distant old open cluster

We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 29, located in the anticentre direction. Using the synthetic Colour - Magnitude Diagrams technique we estimate at the same time its age, reddening, distance, and approximate metallicity using three types of stellar evolutionary tracks. The best solutions give: age=3.4 or 3.7 Gyr, (m-M)_0 = 15.6 or 15.8 with E(B-V) = 0.13 or 0.10, and metallicity lower than solar (Z=0.006 or 0.004), depending on the adopted stellar models. Using these derived values, Be 29 turns out to be the most distant open cluster known, with Galactocentric distance R_GC= 21.4 to 22.6 kpc. Hence, Be 29 qualitatively follows both the age-metallicity relation and the metal abundance gradient typical of Galactic disc objects. The cluster position and radial velocity, however, appear to link Be 29 to the family of the Canis Major debris.

VLT FORS-1 observations of NGC 6397: Evidence for mass segregation

We present (V,V-I) VLT-FORS1 observations of the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 6397. We derive accurate color--magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions (LFs) of the cluster Main Sequence (MS) for two fields extending from a region near the centre of the cluster out to ~ 10 arcmin. The photometry of these fields produces a narrow MS extending down to V ~ 27, much deeper than any previous ground based study on this system and comparable to previous HST photometry. The V, V-I CMD also shows a deep white dwarf cooling sequence locus, contaminated by many field stars and spurious objects. We concentrate the present work on the analysis of the MSLFs derived for two annuli at different radial distance from the center of the cluster. Evidence of a clear-cut correlation between the slope of the observed LFs before reaching the turn-over, and the radial position of the observed fields inside the cluster area is found. We find that the LFs become flatter with decreasing radius (x ~ 0.15 for 1'< R1 < 5.5'; x ~ 0.24 for 5.5'< R2 <9.8'; core radius, rc = 0.05'), a trend that is consistent with the interpretation of NGC 6397 as a dynamically relaxed system. This trend is also evident in the mass function.

The distance to the LMC cluster Reticulum from the K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relation of RR Lyrae stars

We present new and accurate Near-Infrared J and Ks-band data of the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster Reticulum. Data were collected with SOFI available at NTT and covering an area of approximately (5 x 5) arcmin^2 around the center of the cluster. Current data allowed us to derive accurate mean K-band magnitudes for 21 fundamental and 9 first overtone RR Lyrae stars. On the basis of the semi-empirical K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relation we have recently derived, we find that the absolute distance to this cluster is 18.52 +- 0.005 (random) +- 0.117 (systematic). Note that the current error budget is dominated by systematic uncertainty affecting the absolute zero-point calibration and the metallicity scale.

Accurate X-ray position of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197 and identification of its likely IR counterpart

We report the accurate sub-arcsec X-ray position of the new Anomalous X-ray Pulsar (AXP) XTE J1810-197, derived with a Chndra-HRC Target of Opportunity observation carried out in November 2003. We also report the discovery of a likely IR counterpart based on a VLT (IR band) Target of Opportunity observation carried out in October 2003. Our proposed counterpart is the only IR source (Ks=20.8) in the X-ray error circle. Its IR colors as well as the X-ray/IR flux ratio, are consistent with those of the counterparts of all other AXPs (at variance with field star colors). Deep Gunn-i band images obtained at the 3.6m ESO telescope detected no sources down to a limiting magnitude of 24.3. Moreover, we find that the pulsed fraction and count rates of XTE J1810-197 remained nearly unchanged since the previous Chandra and XMM-Newton observations (2003 August 27th and September 8th, respectively). We briefly discuss the implications of these results. In particular, we note that the transient (or at least highly variable) nature of this AXP might imply a relatively large number of hidden members of this class.

The Sgr dSph hosts a metal-rich population

We report on abundances of O, Mg, Si, Ca and Fe for 10 giants in the Sgr dwarf spheroidal derived from high resolution spectra obtained with UVES at the 8.2m Kueyen-VLT telescope. The iron abundance spans the range -0.8 <[Fe/H] < 0.0 and the dominant population is relatively metal-rich with [Fe/H] -0.25. The alpha/Fe ratios are slightly subsolar, even at the lowest observed metallicities suggesting a slow or bursting star formation rate. From our sample of 12 giants (including the two observed by Bonifacio et al 2000) we conclude that a substantial metal rich population exists in Sgr, which dominates the sample. The spectroscopic metallicities allow one to break the age-metallicity degeneracy in the interpretation of the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Comparison of isochrones of appropriate metallicity with the observed CMD suggests an age of 1 Gyr or younger, for the dominant Sgr population sampled by us. We argue that the observations support a star formation that is triggered by the passage of Sgr through the Galactic disc, both in Sgr and in the disc. This scenario has also the virtue of explaining the mysterious ``bulge C stars'' as disc stars formed in this event. The interaction of Sgr with the Milky Way is likely to have played a major role in its evolution.

Chemical abundances in Terzan 7 from UVES spectra

We present chemical abundances for Mg, Si, Ca and Fe for three red giants in the sparse globular cluster Terzan 7, physically associated to the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph), which is presently being tidally disrupted by the Milky Way. The data has been obtained with VLT-UVES and show a mean [Fe/H]=-0.57, with solar alpha content, mean [alpha/Fe]=-0.03. This enforces Ter 7's membership to the Sgr dSph system, which shows a similar pattern of abundance.

Sgr dSph: a bridge between Dwarf Galaxies and DLAs?

We present abundances for 12 giants in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph) obtained from VLT - UVES spectra. Moving on a short period, polar orbit around the Milky Way, the Sgr dSph is undergoing tidal disruption and will eventually dissolve in the Halo. Our sample is dominated by a metal rich, alpha-element-poor population, indicative of long chemical processing of the dSph gas during a slow, probably bursting star formation history. This population is the most metal-rich ever observed in a Dwarf Galaxy of the Local Group, and has the lowest alpha-element content. Placing the known abundances of the LG dwarfs on the [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane allows now to recognize a well defined evolutive sequence, different from the one followed by the MW disk stars, but apparently superimposed to the one followed by many of the Damped Lyman Alpha systems.

Unveiling the Nature of the 321 s Modulation in RX J0806.3+1527: Near-Simultaneous Chandra and VLT Observations

We report on the first near-simultaneous X-ray and optical observations of RX J0806.3+1527. The source is believed to be a 321s orbital period ultra-compact binary system hosting an X-ray emitting white dwarf. Data were obtained with Chandra and the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in November 2001. We found an optical/X-ray phase-shift in the periodic modulation of about 0.5, strongly favoring the existance of two distinct emission regions in the two bands (for the pulsed fluxes). The Chandra data allow us to study, for the first time, the spectral continuum of RX J0806.3+1527 in soft X-rays. This was well fitted by a blackbody spectrum with kT about 65eV and hydrogen column density of N_H about 5 x 10^20 cm^-2. The average (unabsorbed) source 0.1-2.5 keV luminosity during the modulation-on is L_X about 5 x 10^32 erg s^-1 (assuming a distance of 500pc). Such a value is lower than the luminosity expected if stable mass transfer between two white dwarfs were driven by gravitational radiation. Evidence for absorption-like features are present in the phase-averaged spectrum at about 0.53, 0.64, and 1.26 keV, which may be attributed to heavy elements (C and N). We compare and discuss these findings with other binary systems hosting an accreting white dwarf.

TNG photometry of the open cluster NGC 6939

We present CCD UBVI photometry of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 6939 for three TNG-DOLORES fields. The fields A and B cover the center of the cluster; the third one is located about 30 arcmin away, and is used for field stars decontamination. The V-I, B-V and U-B color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), obtained joining very different exposures show: i) a Main Sequence (MS) extending down to V = 24, much deeper (~ 5 magnitudes) than any previous study; ii) a clearly defined Turn Off (TO) and iii) a well populated Red Giant Clump (RC) at about V = 13.

Near-Infrared photometry of LMC cluster Reticulum

We present near-infrared (JKs) time series data of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) cluster Reticulum. The observing strategy and data reduction (DAOPHOTII/ALLFRAME) allowed us to reach a photometry accuracy of the order of 0.02 mag at limiting magnitudes typical of RR Lyrae stars. We are interested in Reticulum, since it hosts a sizable sample of RR Lyrae (32), and therefore the use of the K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZ_K) relation will allow us to supply an accurate LMC distance evaluation. The main advantages in using this method is that it is marginally affected by off-ZAHB evolutionary effects and by reddening corrections. As a preliminary but robust result we find a true distance in good agreement with the LMC Cepheid distance scale, i.e. DM = 18.47 +- 0.07 mag.

The IR counterpart to the Anomalouos X-ray Pulsar 1RXS J1708-4009

We report the discovery of the likely IR counterpart to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar (AXP) 1RXS J1708-4009, based on the combination of Chandra HRC-I X-ray position, and deep optical/IR observations carried out from ESO telescopes and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) during 1999-2002. Within the narrow uncertainty region we found two relatively faint (K'=20.0 and K'=17.53) IR objects. Based on their color and position in the J-K' versus J-H diagram only the brighter object is consistent with the known IR properties of the counterparts to other AXPs. No variability was detected for this source, similarly to what is observed in the case of 4U 0142+614. Like in other AXPs, we found that the IR flux of 1RXSJ1708-4009 is higher then expected for a simple blackbody component extrapolated from the X-ray data. If confirmed, this object would be the fourth IR counterpart to a source of the AXP class, and would make the IR excess a likely new characteristic of AXPs.

V, J, H and K Imaging of the Metal Rich Globular Cluster NGC 6528

New near-infrared observations of NGC6528 are presented. The JHK observations complement a previous HST/NICMOS data set by Ortolani et al. (2001), in that they sample a larger area, contain a more numerous sample of red giant stars, and include the K band. Also, archival HST data sets (separated by 6.093 years) were used to proper-motion decontaminate the near-infrared sample and extract a clean VJHK catalogue. Using the present wide colour baseline, we compared the cleaned colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC6528 with those of NGC 6553 and NGC104 and derived new estimates of reddening and distance, E(B-V)=0.55 and (m-M)o=14.44 (7.7 kpc). Moreover, the morphology and location of the cleaned red giant branch were used to derive a photometric estimate of the cluster metallicity. The average of 10 metallicity indicators yields a mean value of [M/H] ~ 0.0, and [Fe/H] ~-0.20 and +0.08 on the Zinn & West (1984) and Carretta & Gratton (1997) revised metallicity scale, respectively. The best isochrone fit to the cleaned K,V-K diagram is obtained for a 12.6 Gyr and Z=0.02 isochrone, i.e. the derived metallicity of NGC6528 turns out to be very close to the mean of stars in the Baade's Window. Five AGB variable star candidates, whose membership has to be confirmed spectroscopically, are bolometrically as bright as the known long period variable stars in NGC6553. As discussed in Guarnieri et al. (1997) for NGC6553, this may indicate that an `intermediate age' population is not needed to account for the brightest stars in external galaxies such as M32.

Multiwavelength Time Series Data of the LMC Cluster Reticulum

We present accurate multiwavelength UBVI time series data of the LMC cluster Reticulum. Data cover a time interval of ~ 6 yr and have been collected with SUSI1/2 and SOFI at NTT/ESO. For each band we collected approximately 30 short/long exposures and the total exposure times range from roughly 3500 (U, B), 6000s (V) to 8300s (I). The observing strategy and data reduction (DAOPHOTII/ALLFRAME) allowed us to reach a photometry accuracy of 0.02 magnitude from the tip of the Red Giant Branch well below the Turn-Off region. Even though this cluster presents a very low central density, we found a sizable sample of Blue Stragglers (BSs). We also selected stars with a variability index larger than 2, and interestingly enough we detected together with the RR Lyrae stars a large sample of variable stars around and below the TO region. Preliminary analysis on the luminosity variation indicate that these objects might be binary stars.

Preliminary results from VLT (FORS1) photometry of NGC 6397

We present VLT (FORS1) photometry of the lower main sequence (MS) of the Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) NGC 6397, for stars located in 2 fields extending from a region near the cluster center out to ~ 10'. The obtained CMD shows a narrow MS extending down to V ~ 27 (figure c), much deeper than any previous ground based study and comparable with previous HST photometry (Cool et al. 1996). The comparison between observed MS Luminosity Functions (LFs) derived for 2 annuli at different radial distance from the center of the cluster shows a clear-cut correlation between their slope before reaching the turn-over, and the radial position of the observed fields inside the cluster area: the LFs become flatter with decreasing radius, a trend that is consistent with the interpretation of NGC 6397 as a dynamically relaxed system.
