Competition of isoscalar and isovector proton-neutron pairing in nuclei

We use shell model techniques in the complete pf shell to study pair correlations in nuclei. Particular attention is paid to the competition of isoscalar and isovector proton-neutron pairing modes which is investigated in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 46V and in the chain of even Fe-isotopes. We confirm the dominance of isovector pairing in the ground states. An inspection of the level density and pair correlation strength in 46V, however, shows the increasing relative importance of isoscalar correlations with increasing excitation energy. In the Fe-isotopes we find the expected strong dependence of the isovector pairing strength on the neutron excess, while the dominant J=1 isoscalar pair correlations scale much more gently with neutron number. We demonstrate that the isoscalar pair correlations depend strongly on the spin-orbit splitting.

Supernova electron capture rates for 55Co and 56Ni

We have calculated the Gamow-Teller strength distributions for the ground states and first excited states in 55Co and 56Ni. These calculations have been performed by shell model diagonalization in the pf shell using the KB3 interaction. The Gamow-Teller distributions are used to calculate the electron capture rates for typical presupernova conditions. Our 55Co rate is noticeably smaller than the presently adopted rate as it is dominated by weak low-lying transitions rather than the strong Gamow-Teller (GT) resonance which is located at a higher excitation energy in the daughter than usually parametrized. Although our 56Ni rate agrees with the presently adopted rate, we do not confirm the conventional parametrization of the GT centroid. Our results support general trends suggested on the basis of shell model Monte Carlo calculations.

Supernova electron capture rates on odd-odd nuclei

At densities between 10^8 and 10^10} g/cm^3 electron capture in a presupernova collapse is believed to mainly occur on odd-odd nuclei. We have derived the rates for six of the most important electron capturing nuclei, {54,56,58}Mn and {56,58,60}Co, based on calculations of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions for the ground states and first excited states. These calculations have been performed by shell model diagonalization in the pf shell using a recently modified version of the KB3 interaction. The shell model rates are noticeably smaller than the presently adopted rates as the latter have been derived by placing the Gamow-Teller (GT) resonance at too low excitation energies.

Full $0\hbarω$ shell model calculation of the binding energies of the $1f_{7/2}$ nuclei

Binding energies and other global properties of nuclei in the middle of the $pf$ shell, such as M1, E2 and Gamow-Teller sum rules, have been obtained using a new Shell Model code (NATHAN) written in quasi-spin formalism and using a $j-j$-coupled basis. An extensive comparison is made with the recently available Shell Model Monte Carlo results using the effective interaction KB3. The binding energies for -nearly- all the $1f_{7/2}$ nuclei are compared with the measured (and extrapolated) results.

Excited States in 52Fe and the Origin of the Yrast Trap at I=12+

Excited states in 52Fe have been determined up to spin 10\hbar in the reaction 28Si + 28Si at 115 MeV by using γ-ray spectroscopy methods at the GASP array. The excitation energy of the yrast 10+ state has been determined to be 7.381 MeV, almost 0.5 MeV above the well known β+-decaying yrast 12+ state, definitely confirming the nature of its isomeric character. The mean lifetimes of the states have been measured by using the Doppler Shift Attenuation method. The experimental data are compared with spherical shell model calculations in the full pf-shell.

The effective g_A in the pf-shell

We have calculated the Gamow-Teller matrix elements of 64 decays of nuclei in the mass range A=41--50. In all the cases the valence space of the full pf-shell is used. Agreement with the experimental results demands the introduction of an average quenching factor, q=0.744 +/- 0.015, slightly smaller but statistically compatible with the $sd$-shell value, thus indicating that the present number is close to the limit for large A.

Intrinsic vs. laboratory frame description of the deformed nucleus 48Cr

The collective yrast band of the nucleus $^{48}$Cr is studied using the spherical shell model and the HFB method. Both approaches produce basically the same axially symmetric intrinsic state up to the - accurately reproduced - observed backbending. Agreement between both calculations extends to most observables. The only significant discrepancy comes from the static moments of inertia and can be attributed to the need of a more refined treatment of pairing correlations in the HFB calculation.

Gamow-Teller strength in 54Fe and 56Fe

Through a sequence of large scale shell model calculations, total Gamow-Teller strengths ($S_+$ and $S_-$) in $^{54}$Fe and $^{56}$Fe are obtained. They reproduce the experimental values once the $στ$ operator is quenched by the standard factor of $0.77$. Comparisons are made with recent Shell Model Monte Carlo calculations. Results are shown to depend critically on the interaction. From an analysis of the GT+ and GT$-$ strength functions it is concluded that experimental evidence is consistent with the $3(N-Z)$ sum rule.

A Full $PF$ Shell Model Study of a~=~48 Nuclei

Exact diagonalizations with a minimally modified realistic force lead to detailed agreement with measured level schemes and electromagnetic transitions in $^{48}$Ca, $^{48}$Sc, $^{48}$Ti, $^{48}$V, $^{48}$Cr and $^{48}$Mn. Gamow-Teller strength functions are systematically calculated and reproduce the data to within the standard quenching factor. Their fine structure indicates that fragmentation makes much strength unobservable. As a by-product, the calculations suggest a microscopic description of the onset of rotational motion. The spectroscopic quality of the results provides strong arguments in favour of the general validity of monopole corrected realistic forces, which is discussed.

The Beta Decay of 44V

We have calculated the $β^+$ decay of the proton rich nuclei $^{44}$V in a full fp-shell valence space. We obtain a theoretical half-life of 71~ms compared with the experimental value t$_{1/2}$ = 90 $\pm$ 25 ms. Besides, we make predictions for the Gamow-Teller strength functions corresponding to the decays of the 2$^+$ ground state and 6$^+$ isomer state.
