The 17 April 2021 widespread solar energetic particle event

Context. A solar eruption on 17 April 2021 produced a widespread Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event that was observed by five longitudinally well-separated observers in the inner heliosphere at heliocentric distances of 0.42 to 1 au: BepiColombo, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, STEREO A, and near-Earth spacecraft. The event produced relativistic electrons and protons. It was associated with a long-lasting solar hard X-ray flare and a medium fast Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) with a speed of 880 km/s driving a shock, an EUV wave as well as long-lasting radio burst activity showing four distinct type III burst. Methods. A multi-spacecraft analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ observations is applied to attribute the SEP observations at the different locations to the various potential source regions at the Sun. An ENLIL simulation is used to characterize the interplanetary state and its role for the energetic particle transport. The magnetic connection between each spacecraft and the Sun is determined. Based on a reconstruction of the coronal shock front we determine the times when the shock establishes magnetic connections with the different observers. Radio observations are used to characterize the directivity of the four main injection episodes, which are then employed in a 2D SEP transport simulation. Results. Timing analysis of the inferred SEP solar injection suggests different source processes being important for the electron and the proton event. Comparison among the characteristics and timing of the potential particle sources, such as the CME-driven shock or the flare, suggests a stronger shock contribution for the proton event and a more likely flare-related source of the electron event. Conclusions. We find that in this event an important ingredient for the wide SEP spread was the wide longitudinal range of about 110 degrees covered by distinct SEP injections.

Holomorphic Vertex Operator Algebras of Small Central Charges

We provide a rigorous mathematical foundation to the study of strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebras V of central charge c = 8, 16 and 24 initiated by Schellekens. If c = 8 or 16 we show that V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a rank c even, self-dual lattice. If c = 24 we prove, among other things, that either V is isomorphic to a lattice theory corresponding to a Niemeier lattice or the Leech lattice, or else the Lie algebra on the weight one subspace V_1 is semisimple (possibly 0) of Lie rank less than 24.

Rational Vertex Operator Algebras and the Effective Central Charge

We establish that the Lie algebra of weight one states in a (strongly) rational vertex operator algebra is reductive, and that its Lie rank is bounded above by the effective central charge. We show that lattice vertex operator algebras may be characterized by the equalities of the effective central charge, the Lie rank and the central charge, and in particular holomorphic lattice theories may be characterized among all holomorphic vertex operator algebras by the equality of the Lie rank and the central charge.

Twisted sectors for tensor product vertex operator algebras associated to permutation groups

Let V be a vertex operator algebra, and for k a positive integer, let g be a k-cycle permutation of the vertex operator algebra V^{\otimes k}. We prove that the categories of weak, weak admissible and ordinary g-twisted modules for the tensor product vertex operator algebra V^{\otimes k} are isomorphic to the categories of weak, weak admissible and ordinary V-modules, respectively. The main result is an explicit construction of the weak g-twisted V^{\otimes k}-modules from weak V-modules. For an arbitrary permutation automorphism g of V^{\otimes k} the category of weak admissible g-twisted modules for V^{\otimes k$ is semisimple and the simple objects are determined if V is rational. In addition, we extend these results to the more general setting of γg-twisted V^{\otimes k}-modules for γa general automorphism of V acting diagonally on V^{\otimes k} and a g a permutation automorphism of V^{\otimes k}.

Transformation Laws for Theta functions

We prove some results which extend the classical theory, due to Hecke-Schoeneberg, of the transformation laws of theta functions. Although our results are classical in natural, they were suggested by recent work involving modular-invariance in conformal field theory.

Monstrous Moonshine of higher weight

We determine the space of 1-point correlation functions associated with the Moonshine module: they are precisely those modular forms of non-negative integral weight which are holomorphic in the upper half plane, have a pole of order at most 1 at infinity, and whose Fourier expansion has constant 0. There are Monster-equivariant analogues in which one naturally associates to each element in the Monster a modular form of fixed weight k, the case k=0 corresponding to the original ``Moonshine'' of Conway and Norton.

Twisted representations of vertex operator algebras and associative algebras

Let V be a vertex operator algebra and g an automorphism of order T. We construct a sequence of associative algebras A_{g,n}(V) with n\in\frac{1}{T}\Z nonnegative such that A_{g,n}(V) is a quotient of A_{g,n+1/T}(V) and a pair of functors between the category of A_{g,n}(V)-modules which are not A_{g,n-1/T}(V)-modules and the category of admissible V-modules. These functors exhibit a bijection between the simple modules in each category. We also show that V is g-rational if and only if all A_{g,n}(V) are finite-dimensional semisimple algebras.

The radical of a vertex operator algebra

The radical $J(V)$ of a vertex operator algebra $V$ is defined to be the subspace of $V$ consisting of vectors $v$ such that the zero mode $o(v)=0$ on $V$ where $o(v)=v_{wt v-1}$ if $v$ is homogeneous. We establish various facts about $o(v),$ including the determination of $J(V)$ which is shown to be essentially equal to $(L(0)+L(-1))V.$

Associative subalgebras of the Griess algebra and related topics

It is shown how certain idempotents in the Griess algebra generate the discrete series representations for the Virasoro algebra inside the Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's moonshine module vertex operator algebra. It is also shown that each Niemeier lattice determines (in many ways) certain maximal associative subalgebras of the Griess algebra.
