Constraints on Unified Gauge Theories from Noncommutative Geometry

The Connes and Lott reformulation of the strong and electroweak model represents a promising application of noncommutative geometry. In this scheme the Higgs field naturally appears in the theory as a particular `gauge boson', connected to the discrete internal space, and its quartic potential, fixed by the model, is not vanishing only when more than one fermion generation is present. Moreover, the exact hypercharge assignments and relations among the masses of particles have been obtained. This paper analyzes the possibility of extensions of this model to larger unified gauge groups. Noncommutative geometry imposes very stringent constraints on the possible theories, and remarkably, the analysis seems to suggest that no larger gauge groups are compatible with the noncommutative structure, unless one enlarges the fermionic degrees of freedom, namely the number of particles.

Inflationary Cosmology from Noncommutative Geometry

In the framework of the Connes-Lott model based on noncommutative geometry, the basic features of a gauge theory in the presence of gravity are reviewed, in order to show the possible physical relevance of this scheme for inflationary cosmology. These models naturally contain at least two scalar fields, interacting with each other whenever more than one fermion generation is assumed. In this paper we propose to investigate the behaviour of these two fields (one of which represents the distance between the copies of a two-sheeted space-time) in the early stages of the universe evolution. In particular the simplest abelian model, which preserves the main characteristics of more complicate gauge theories, is considered and the corresponding inflationary dynamics is studied. We find that a chaotic inflation is naturally favoured, leading to a field configuration in which no symmetry breaking occurs and the final distance between the two sheets of space-time is smaller the greater the number of $e$-fold in each sheet.

Quantum statistics and Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations

The phenomenological evidence of quantum statistical effects in parton physics is here briefly summarized, and the recent good results obtained by parameterizing the parton distributions in terms of Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistical functions are discussed. In this framework we study the modification of the scaling behaviour of parton distributions due to quantum statistical effects. In particular, by following a well-known formal analogy which holds between the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations, at leading-log approximation, and a set of Boltzmann equations, we suggest a generalization of evolution equations to take into account Pauli exclusion principle and gluon induced emission.

Radiation Damping and Quantum Excitation for Longitudinal Charged Particle Dynamics in the Thermal Wave Model

On the basis of the recently proposed {\it Thermal Wave Model (TWM) for particle beams}, we give a description of the longitudinal charge particle dynamics in circular accelerating machines by taking into account both radiation damping and quantum excitation (stochastic effect), in presence of a RF potential well. The longitudinal dynamics is governed by a 1-D Schrödinger-like equation for a complex wave function whose squared modulus gives the longitudinal bunch density profile. In this framework, the appropriate {\it r.m.s. emittance} scaling law, due to the damping effect, is naturally recovered, and the asymptotic equilibrium condition for the bunch length, due to the competition between quantum excitation (QE) and radiation damping (RD), is found. This result opens the possibility to apply the TWM, already tested for protons, to electrons, for which QE and RD are very important.

Full Phase-Space Analysis of Particle Beam Transport in the Thermal Wave Model

Within the Thermal Wave Model framework a comparison among Wigner function, Husimi function, and the phase-space distribution given by a particle tracking code is made for a particle beam travelling through a linear lens with small aberrations. The results show that the quantum-like approach seems to be very promising.

Quantum Statistics and Parton Distributions

A novel approach to parton distributions parameterization in terms of quantum statistical functions is here outlined. The description, already proposed in previous publications, is here improved by adding to the statistical distributions an unpolarized {\it liquid} component. This new contribution to fermion partons is able to reproduce the expected low $x$ behaviour of structure functions. The analysis provides a satisfactory description of polarized and unpolarized deep inelastic data and shows a possible connection between the Gottfried and Bjorken sum rules.

Inflaton Potential Reconstruction and Generalized Equations of State

We extend a previous analysis concerning cosmological fluids with generalized equations of state in order to study inflationary scenarios. In the framework of the slow-roll approximation we find the expressions for the perturbation parameters $ε$, $η$ and the density perturbation spectra in terms of the adiabatic index $\ga$ as a function of the universe scale factor. This connection allows to find straightforwardly $\ga$ corresponding, for example, to the simplest {\it chaotic} model and to the Harrison-Zeldovich potential and shows its capability to be applied to more complicate situations. Finally, we use this description to develop a new approach to the early universe dynamics, based on a $1/N$ expansion, where $N$ is the e-fold number. To this aim, we introduce a set of suitable dimensionless variables and show that at the zero-th order in $1/N$, an improved slow-roll approximation is obtained.

Fermi-Dirac statistics plus liquid description of quark partons

A previous approach with Fermi-Dirac distributions for fermion partons is here improved to comply with the expected low $x$ behaviour of structure functions. We are so able to get a fair description of the unpolarized and polarized structure functions of the nucleons as well as of neutrino data. We cannot reach definite conclusions, but confirm our suspicion of a relationship between the defects in Gottfried and spin sum rules.

Coherent States for Particle Beams in the Thermal Wave Model

In this paper, by using an analogy among {\it quantum mechanics}, {\it electromagnetic beam optics in optical fibers}, and {\it charge particle beam dynamics}, we introduce the concept of {\it coherent states} for charged particle beams in the framework of the {\it Thermal Wave Model} (TWM). We give a physical meaning of the Gaussian-like coherent structures of charged particle distribution that are both naturally and artificially produced in an accelerating machine in terms of the concept of coherent states widely used in quantum mechanics and in quantum optics. According to TWM, this can be done by using a Schrödinger-like equation for a complex function, the so-called {\it beam wave function} (BWF), whose squared modulus is proportional to the transverse beam density profile, where Planck's constant and the time are replaced by the transverse beam emittance and by the propagation coordinate, respectively. The evolution of the particle beam, whose initial BWF is assumed to be the simplest coherent state (ground-like state) associated with the beam, in an infinite 1-D quadrupole-like device with small sextupole and octupole aberrations, is analytically and numerically investigated.

Nonleptonic weak decays of charmed mesons

A previous analysis of two-body Cabibbo allowed nonleptonic decays of $D^0$ mesons and of Cabibbo allowed and first-forbidden decays of $D^+$ and $D_s^+$ has been adjourned using more recent experimental data and extended to the Cabibbo forbidden decays of $D^0$. Annihilation and W-exchange contributions as well as final state interaction effects (assumed to be dominated by nearby resonances) have been included and are in fact crucial to obtain a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, which show large flavour SU(3) violations. New fitting parameters are necessary to describe rescattering effects for Cabibbo forbidden $D^0$ decays, given the lack of experimental informations on isoscalar resonances. We keep their number to a minimum - three - using phenomenologically based considerations. We also discuss CP violating asymmetries.

Fermi-Dirac Distributions for Quark Partons

We propose to use Fermi-Dirac distributions for quark and antiquark partons. It allows a fair description of the $x$-dependence of the very recent NMC data on the proton and neutron structure functions $F_2^p(x)$ and $F_2^n(x)$ at $Q^2=4$ GeV$^2$, as well as the CCFR antiquark distribution $x\overline q(x)$. We show that one can also use a corresponding Bose-Einstein expression to describe consistently the gluon distribution. The Pauli exclusion principle, which has been identified to explain the flavor asymmetry of the light-quark sea of the proton, is advocated to guide us for making a simple construction of the polarized parton distributions. We predict the spin dependent structure functions $g_1^p(x)$ and $g_1^n(x)$ in good agreement with EMC and SLAC data. The quark distributions involve some parameters whose values support well the hypothesis that the violation of the quark parton model sum rules is a consequence of the Pauli principle.

Semiclassical Gravitational Effects in de Sitter Space at Finite Temperature

In the framework of finite temperature conformal scalar field theory on de Sitter space-time the linearized Einstein equations for the renormalized stress tensor are exactly solved. In this theory quantum field fluctuations are concentrated near two spheres of the de Sitter radius, propagating as light wave fronts. Related cosmological aspects are shortly discussed. The analysis, performed for flat expanding universe, shows exponential damping of the back-reaction effects far from these spherical objects. The obtained solutions for the semiclassical Einstein equations in de Sitter background can be straightforwardly extended also to the anti-de Sitter geometry.

Quantum statistical effects on parton distribution scaling behaviour

Starting from the old idea that Fermi statistics for quarks play a fundamental role to explain some features of hadron structure, we study the modification of the scaling behaviour of parton distributions due to quantum statistical effects. Nonleptonic Cabibbo Favoured $B$-Decays and $CP$-Asymmetries for Charmed Final Hadron States in Isgur and Wise Theory

The Cabibbo allowed non-leptonic $B$-decays in two hadrons are studied, within the factorization hypothesis, in the framework of Isgur and Wise theory for the matrix elements of the $ΔB=-ΔC=\pm 1$ weak currents. The $SU(2)_{HF}$ symmetry relates $|ΔB|=1$ to $|ΔC|=1$ currents, which have been measured in the semileptonic strange decays of charmed particles. By assuming colour screening and allowing for $SU(3)$ invariant contributions from the annihilation terms with charmed final states one is able to comply with the present experimental knowledge.\\ The $CP$ violating asymmetries in neutral $B$ decays are given for charmed final states in terms of the $K-M$ angles. With the central values found for the annihilation parameters there is a destructive (constructive) interference between the direct and annihilation terms in the Cabibbo allowed (doubly forbidden) amplitudes for the decays into $D^{0}(D^{*0})π^0$ and $D^0ρ^0$ so that they may be of the same order. This would imply large asymmetries, for which however our present knowledge on the amplitudes does not allow to predict even their sign.\\ We have better confidence in our predictions for the charged final states than the neutral ones and can draw the conclusion that the detection of the corresponding asymmetries requires, at least, $10^6$ tagged neutral $B$-particles.

Finite-Temperature Scalar Field Theory in Static de Sitter Space

The finite-temperature one-loop effective potential for a scalar field in the static de Sitter space-time is obtained. Within this framework, by using zeta-function regularization, one can get, in the conformally invariant case, the explicit expression for the stress tensor anomaly. Its value turns out to depend on the thermal state of the system. This conclusion is different from the one derived by other authors, who considered thermal properties of ultraviolet divergences in static spaces ignoring the effects of horizons. The behaviour of the effective potential in the ground state and in de Sitter-invariant state is also studied, showing the role played by the curvature on the minima.

CP violating asymmetries in charged D meson decays

The CP violating asymmetries for Cabibbo suppressed charged D meson decays in the standard model are estimated in the factorized approximation, using the two-loop effective hamiltonian and a model for final state interactions previously tested for Cabibbo allowed D decays. No new parameters are added. The predictions are larger than expected and not too far from the experimental possibilities.
