Influence of toroidal magnetic field in multi-accreting tori

We analyzed the effects of a toroidal magnetic field in the formation of several magnetized accretion tori, dubbed as ringed accretion disks (RADs), orbiting around one central Kerr supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) in AGNs, where both corotating and counterotating disks are considered. Constraints on tori formation and emergence of RADs instabilities, accretion onto the central attractor and tori collision emergence, are investigated. The results of this analysis show that the role of the central BH spin-mass ratio, the magnetic field and the relative fluid rotation and tori rotation with respect the central BH, are crucial elements in determining the accretion tori features, providing ultimately evidence of a strict correlation between SMBH spin, fluid rotation and magnetic fields in RADs formation and evolution. More specifically we proved that magnetic field and disks rotation are in fact strongly constrained, as tori formation and evolution in RADs depend on the toroidal magnetic fields parameters. Eventually this analysis identifies specific classes of tori, for restrict ranges of magnetic field parameter, that can be observed around some specific SMBHs identified by their dimensionless spin.

Implications of the Co-rotation Theorem on the MRI in Axial Symmetry

We analyze the linear stability of an axially symmetric ideal plasma disk, embedded in a magnetic field and endowed with a differential rotation. This study is performed by adopting the magnetic flux function as the fundamental dynamical variable, in order to outline the role played by the co-rotation theorem on the linear mode structure. Using some specific assumptions (e.g. plasma incompressibility and propagation of the perturbations along the background magnetic field), we select the Alfvenic nature of the Magneto-Rotational Instability and, in the geometric optics limit, we determine the dispersion relation describing the linear spectrum. We show how the implementation of the co-rotation theorem (valid for the background configuration) on the linear dynamics produces the cancellation of the vertical derivative of the disk angular velocity (we check such a feature also in the standard vector formalism to facilitate comparison with previous literature, both in the axisymmetric and three-dimensional case). As a result, we clarify that the unstable modes have, for a stratified disk, the same morphology, proper of a thin disk profile, and the $z$ dependence has a simple parametric role.

Morphology of the two-dimensional MRI in Axial Symmetry

In this paper, we analyze the linear stability of a stellar accretion disk, having a stratified morphology. The study is performed in the framework of ideal magneto-hydrodynamics and therefore it results in a characterization of the linear unstable magneto-rotational modes. The peculiarity of the present scenario consists of adopting the magnetic flux function as the basic dynamical variable. Such a representation of the dynamics allows to make account of the co-rotation theorem as a fundamental feature of the ideal plasma equilibrium, evaluating its impact on the perturbation evolution too. According to the Alfvenic nature of the Magneto-rotational instability, we consider an incompressible plasma profile and perturbations propagating along the background magnetic field. Furthermore, we develop a local perturbation analysis, around fiducial coordinates of the background configuration and dealing with very small scale of the linear dynamics in comparison to the background inhomogeneity size. The main issue of the present study is that the condition for the emergence of unstable modes is the same in the stratified plasma disk, as in the case of a thin configuration. Such a feature is the result of the cancelation of the vertical derivative of the disk angular frequency from the dispersion relation, which implies that only the radial profile of the differential rotation is responsible for the trigger of growing modes.

Relativistic thick accretion disks: morphology and evolutionary parameters

We explore thick accretion disks around rotating attractors. We detail the configurations analysing the fluid angular momentum and finally providing a characterization of the disk morphology and different possible topologies. Investigating the properties of orbiting disks, a classification of attractors, possibly identifiable in terms of their spin-mass ratio, is introduced; then an attempt to characterize dynamically a series of different disk topologies is discussed, showing that some of the toroidal configuration features are determined by the ratio of the angular momentum of the orbiting matter and the spin mass-ratio of the attractor. Then we focus on "multi-structured" disks, constituted by two o more rings of matter orbiting the same attractor, and we proved that some structures are constrained in the dimension of rings, spacing, location and an upper limit of ring number is provided. Finally, assuming a polytropic equation of state we study some specific cases.

Plasma Phenomenology in Astrophysical Systems: Radio-Sources and Jets

We review the plasma phenomenology in the astrophysical sources which show appreciable radio emissions, namely Radio-Jets from Pulsars, Microquasars, Quasars and Radio-Active Galaxies. A description of their basic features is presented, then we discuss in some details the links between their morphology and the mechanisms that lead to the different radio-emissions, investigating especially the role played by the plasma configurations surrounding compact objects (Neutron Stars, Black Holes). For the sake of completeness, we briefly mention observational techniques and detectors, whose structure set them apart from other astrophysical instruments. The fundamental ideas concerning Angular Momentum Transport across plasma accretion disks (together with the disk-source-jet coupling problem) are discussed, by stressing their successes and their shortcomings. An alternative scenario is then inferred, based on a parallelism between astrophysical and laboratory plasma configurations, where small-scale structures can be found. We will focus our attention on the morphology of the radio-jets, on their coupling with the accretion disks and on the possible triggering phenomena, viewed as profiles of plasma instabilities.

Astrophysical evidence for an extra dimension: phenomenology of a Kaluza Klein theory

In this brief review we discuss the viability of a multidimensional geometrical theory with one compactified dimension. We discuss the case of a Kaluza Klein fifth dimensional theory, addressing the problem by an overview of the astrophysical phenomenology associated with this five dimensional theory. By comparing the predictions of our model with the features of the ordinary (four dimensional) Relativistic Astrophysics, we highlight some small but finite discrepancies, expectably detectible from the observations. We consider a class of static, vacuum solutions of free electromagnetic Kaluza Klein equations with three dimensional spherical symmetry. We explore the stability of the particle dynamics in these spacetimes, the construction of self gravitating stellar models and the emission spectrum generated by a charged particle falling on this stellar object. The matter dynamics in these geometries has been treated by a multipole approach adapted to the geometric theory with a compactified dimension.

Squeezing of toroidal accretion disks

Accretion disks around very compact objects such as very massive Black hole can grow according to thick toroidal models. We face the problem of defining how does change the thickness of a toroidal accretion disk spinning around a Schwarzschild Black hole under the influence of a toroidal magnetic field and by varying the fluid angular momentum. We consider both an hydrodynamic and a magnetohydrodynamic disk based on the Polish doughnut thick model. We show that the torus thickness remains basically unaffected but tends to increase or decrease slightly depending on the balance of the magnetic, gravitational and centrifugal effects which the disk is subjected to.

On the Polish doughnut accretion disk via the effective potential approach

We revisit the Polish doughnut model of accretion disks providing a comprehensive analytical description of the Polish doughnut structure. We describe a perfect fluid circularly orbiting around a Schwarzschild black hole, source of the gravitational field, by the effective potential approach for the exact gravitational and centrifugal effects. This analysis leads to a detailed, analytical description of the accretion disk, its toroidal surface, the thickness, the distance from the source. We determine the variation of these features with the effective potential and the fluid angular momentum. Many analytical formulas are given. In particular it turns out that the distance from the source of the inner surface of the torus increases with increasing fluid angular momentum but decreases with increasing energy function defined as the value of the effective potential for that momentum. The location of torus maximum thickness moves towards the external regions of the surface with increasing angular momentum, until it reaches a maximum an then decreases. Assuming a polytropic equation of state we investigate some specific cases.

Solution of the noncanonicity puzzle in General Relativity: a new Hamiltonian formulation

We study the transformation leading from Arnowitt, Deser, Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian formulation of General Relativity (GR) to the $ΓΓ$ metric Hamiltonian formulation derived from the Lagrangian density which was firstly proposed by Einstein. We classify this transformation as gauged canonical - i.e. canonical modulo a gauge transformation. In such a study we introduce a new Hamiltonian formulation written in ADM variables which differs from the usual ADM formulation mainly in a boundary term firstly proposed by Dirac. Performing the canonical quantization procedure we introduce a new functional phase which contains an explicit dependence on the fields characterizing the 3+1 splitting. Given a specific regularization procedure our new formulation privileges the symmetric operator ordering in order to: have a consistent quantization procedure, avoid anomalies in constraints algebra, be equivalent to the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) quantization. Furthermore we show that this result is consistent with a path-integral approach.

On the electromagnetic emission from charged test particles in a five dimensional spacetime

We study the motion of charged particles radially falling in a class of static and electromagnetic-free, five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein backgrounds. Particle dynamics in such spacetimes is explored by an approach \emph{a l$\acute{a}$} Papapetrou. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by these particles is studied, outlining the new features emerging in the spectra for the five-dimensional case. A comparison with the dynamics in the four dimensional counterpart, \textit{i.e} the Schwarzschild background, is performed.

Stars in five dimensional Kaluza Klein gravity

In the five dimensional Kaluza Klein (KK) theory there is a well known class of static and electromagnetic--free KK--equations characterized by a naked singularity behavior, namely the Generalized Schwarzschild solution (GSS). We present here a set of interior solutions of five dimensional KK--equations. These equations have been numerically integrated to match the GSS in the vacuum. The solutions are candidates to describe the possible interior perfect fluid source of the exterior GSS metric and thus they can be models for stars for static, neutral astrophysical objects in the ordinary (four dimensional) spacetime.

Gravity in presence of fermions as a SU(2) gauge theory

The Hamiltonian formulation of the Holst action in presence of a massless fermion field with a non-minimal Lagrangian is performed without any restriction on the local Lorentz frame. It is outlined that the phase space structure does not resemble that one of a background independent Lorentz gauge theory, as some additional constraints are present. Proper phase space coordinates are introduced, such that SU(2) connections can be defined and the vanishing of conjugate momenta to boost variables is predicted. Finally, it is demonstrated that for a particular value of the non-minimal parameter the kinematics coincides with that one of a background independent SU(2) gauge theory and the Immirzi parameter becomes the coupling constant of such an interaction between fermions and the gravitational field.

Matter in Loop Quantum Gravity without time gauge: a non-minimally coupled scalar field

We analyze the phase space of gravity non-minimally coupled to a scalar field in a generic local Lorentz frame. We reduce the set of constraints to a first-class one by fixing a specific hypersurfaces in the phase space. The main issue of our analysis is to extend the features of the vacuum case to the presence of scalar matter by recovering the emergence of an SU(2) gauge structure and the non-dynamical role of boost variables. Within this scheme, the super-momentum and the super-Hamiltonian are those ones associated with a scalar field minimally coupled to the metric in the Einstein frame. Hence, the kinematical Hilbert space is defined as in canonical Loop Quantum Gravity with a scalar field, but the differences in the area spectrum are outlined to be the same as in the time-gauge approach.

Dimensional Reduction of the 5D Kaluza-Klein Geodesic Deviation Equation

In the work of Kerner et al. (2001) the problem of the geodesic deviation in a 5D Kaluza Klein background is faced. The 4D space-time projection of the resulting equation coincides with the usual geodesic deviation equation in the presence of the Lorenz force, provided that the fifth component of the deviation vector satisfies an extra constraint which takes into account the $q/m$ conservation along the path. The analysis was performed setting as a constant the scalar field which appears in Kaluza-Klein model. Here we focus on the extension of such a work to the model where the presence of the scalar field is considered. Our result coincides with that of Kerner et al. when the minimal case $ϕ=1$ is considered, while it shows some departures in the general case. The novelty due to the presence of $ϕ$ is that the variation of the $q/m$ between the two geodesic lines is not conserved during the motion; an exact law for such a behaviour has been derived.

Implications of non-analytical f(R) gravity at Solar-System scales

We motivate and analyze the weak-field limit of a non-analytical Lagrangian for the gravitational field. After investigating the parameter space of the model, we impose constraints on the parameters characterizing this class of theories imposed by Solar-System data, i.e. we establish the validity range where this solution applies and refine the constraints by the comparison with planetary orbits. As a result, we claim that this class of models is viable within different astrophysical scales.

Fundamentals and recent developments in non-perturbative canonical Quantum Gravity

The aim of this review is to provide a detailed account of the physical content emerging from this story of the canonical approach to Quantum Gravity. All the crucial steps in our presentation have a pedagogical character, providing the reader with the necessary tools to become involved in the field. Such a pedagogical aspect is then balanced and completed by subtle discussions on specific topics which we regard as relevant for the physical insight they outline on the treated questions. Our analysis is not aimed at convincing the reader about a pre-constituted point of view, bu instead our principal goal is to review the picture of Canonical Quantum Gravity on the basis of the concrete facts at the ground of its clear successes, but also of its striking shortcomings.

The role of the time gauge in the 2nd order formalism

We perform a canonical quantization of gravity in a second-order formulation, taking as configuration variables those describing a 4-bein, not adapted to the space-time splitting. We outline how, neither if we fix the Lorentz frame before quantizing, nor if we perform no gauge fixing at all, is invariance under boost transformations affected by the quantization.

Curvature-spin coupling from the semi-classical limit of the Dirac equation

The notion of a classical particle is inferred from Dirac quantum fields on a curved space-time, by an eikonal approximation and a localization hypothesis for amplitudes. This procedure allows to define a semi-classical version of the spin-tensor from internal quantum degrees of freedom, which has a Papapetrou-like coupling with the curvature.
