Couplings of pions to higher positive parity heavy mesons

We evaluate the couplings of pions in the transitions of positive parity heavy mesons, (1+,2+) and (0+,1+), to negative parity ones (0-,1-) using a technique which is not limited to the soft-pion limit. This is made through a constituent quark-meson model (the CQM model) where the amplitudes are obtained by quark loops with mesons on the external lines. The results are in good agreement with experimental data.

Analysis of the Three-Body $B \to D^+ D^- π^0$ Decay

The decay process $B\to D^+ D^- π^0$ is an interesting channel for the investigation of CP violating effects in the $b-$ sector. We write down a decay amplitude constrained by a low-energy theorem, which also includes the contribution of resonant $S-$ and $P-$wave beauty and charmed mesons, and we determine the relevant matrix elements in the infinite heavy quark mass limit, assuming the factorization ansatz. We estimate the rate of the decay: ${\cal B}(B \to D^+ D^- π^0)\simeq 1 \times 10^{-3}$. We also analyze the time-independent and time-dependent differential decay distributions, concluding that a signal for this process should be observed at the B-factories. Finally, we give an estimate of the decay rate of the Cabibbo-favoured process $B\to D^+ D^- K_S$.

Semileptonic B -> rho and B -> a_1 transitions in a quark-meson model

We evaluate the form factors governing the exclusive decays B->rho l nu, B->a_1 l nu, by using an effective quark-meson lagrangian. The model is based on meson-quark interactions, and the computation of the mesonic transition amplitudes is performed by considering diagrams with heavy mesons attached to loops containing heavy and light constituent quarks. This approach was successfully employed to compute the Isgur-Wise form factors and other hadronic observables for negative and positive parity heavy mesons and is presently used for exclusive heavy-to-light weak transitions. We also evaluate a few strong coupling constants appearing in chiral effective lagrangians for heavy and light mesons.

Semileptonic and Rare $B$-meson transitions in a QCD relativistic potential model

Using a QCD relativistic potential model, previously applied to the calculation of the heavy meson leptonic constants, we evaluate the form factors governing the exclusive decays $B\toρ\ellν$, $B\to K^*γ$ and $B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^-$. In our approach the heavy meson is described as a $Q\bar q$ bound state, whose wave function is solution of the relativistic Salpeter equation, with an instantaneous potential displaying Coulombic behaviour at small distances and linear behaviour at large distances. The light vector meson is described by using a vector current interpolating field, according to the Vector Meson Dominance assumption. A Pauli-Villars regularized propagator is assumed for the quarks not constituting the heavy meson. Our procedure allows to avoid the description of the light meson in terms of wave function and constituent quarks, and consequently the problem of boosting the light meson wave function. Assuming as an input the experimental results on $B\to K^*γ$, we evaluate all the form factors describing the $B\to ρ, K^*$ semileptonic and rare transitions. The overall comparison with the data, whenever available, is satisfactory.

A Constituent Quark-Meson Model for Heavy-Meson Processes

We describe the effective heavy meson lagrangian for S- and P-wave heavy-light mesons in terms of a model based on meson-quark interactions, where mesonic transition amplitudes are represented by diagrams with heavy mesons attached to loops containing heavy and light constituent quarks. The model is relativistic and incorporates the heavy quark symmetries. The universal form factors of the heavy meson transition amplitudes are calculated together with their slopes and compared to existing data and limits. As further applications of the model, strong and radiative decays of D* and B* are considered. The agreement with data is surprisingly good and shows that the model offers a viable alternative to effective meson lagrangians which require a larger number of input parameters.

Electromagnetic Mass Difference of Heavy Mesons

Using the Cottingham formula, we give an estimate of the electromagnetic mass splitting of pseudoscalar heavy mesons in the beauty and charm sector. We include in the dispersion relation the Born term, the $1^-$ resonance and the positive parity $1^+$ resonance. We also evaluate the contribution to the mass difference from the isospin breaking quark mass differences. Our results: $m_{B^+}-m_{B^0} = - 0.83\pm 0.34 MeV$ and $m_{D^+}-m_{D^0} = + 4.33\pm 0.37 MeV$, are in agreement with the experimental measurements: $m_{B^+}-m_{B^0} = - 0.35\pm 0.29 MeV$ and $m_{D^+}-m_{D^0} = + 4.78\pm 0.10 MeV$. We also compute the mass differences in the infinite heavy quark mass limit, which show small deviations from the finite mass results for the B case and 30% effects in the charm case.

Role of Neural Networks in the Search of the Higgs Boson at LHC

We show that neural network classifiers can be helpful to discriminate Higgs production from background at LHC in the Higgs mass range M= 200 GeV. We employ a common feed-forward neural network trained by the backpropagation algorithm for off-line analysis and the neural chip Totem, trained by the Reactive Tabu Search algorithm, which could be used for on-line analysis.

Violations of Local Duality in the Heavy Quark Sector

We examine the origin of possible failures of the quark-hadron local duality. In particular, we consider a correlator of two currents comprising heavy quark operators, and compare the evaluation by the Operator Product Expansion with the result obtained inserting an infinite set of hadronic states, in the N_c to infinity limit. Whereas the smeared spectral functions agree with each other, their local behaviour is different. The difference manifests itself in the form of a term O(Lambda/epsilon) (epsilon being the residual energy) that is not present in the expansion in powers of Lambda/epsilon predicted by the OPE.

Stochastic learning in a neural network with adapting synapses

We consider a neural network with adapting synapses whose dynamics can be analitically computed. The model is made of $N$ neurons and each of them is connected to $K$ input neurons chosen at random in the network. The synapses are $n$-states variables which evolve in time according to Stochastic Learning rules; a parallel stochastic dynamics is assumed for neurons. Since the network maintains the same dynamics whether it is engaged in computation or in learning new memories, a very low probability of synaptic transitions is assumed. In the limit $N\to\infty$ with $K$ large and finite, the correlations of neurons and synapses can be neglected and the dynamics can be analitically calculated by flow equations for the macroscopic parameters of the system.

On the QCD Sum Rule Determination of the Strange Quark Mass

In the QCD Sum Rule determination of $m_s$ using the two-point correlator of divergences of $ΔS=1$ vector currents, the final uncertainty on $m_s$ is mainly due to the hadronic spectral function. Using a specific parameterization which fully takes into account the available experimental data on the $K π$ ($I=1/2, J^P=0^+)$ system, characterized by the presence of a relevant nonresonant component in addition to the resonant one, we find ${\bar m_s}(1 GeV)\ge 120 MeV$. In particular, varying only the parameters describing the nonresonant $K π$ component and $Λ_{\bar {MS}}^{n_f=3}$ we obtain ${\bar m_s}(1 GeV)=125 - 160 MeV$. This result is smaller than analogous ones obtained by using a parameterization in terms of only resonant states. We discuss how to systematically improve the determination of $m_s$ by this method.

Non Leptonic Heavy Hadron Decays and Local Duality

We discuss local duality for weak non leptonic B and Lambda_b decays in the m_b -> infinity limit under the hypothesis of factorization and in the Shifman-Voloshin limit. We show that, under these hypotheses, local duality holds for the first two terms in the 1/m_b expansion and at the order alpha_s in the perturbative expansion. The possible relevance of these results for the operator product expansion evaluation of the b-hadron lifetimes is discussed.

Final State Interactions in $B -> D ρ$ and $B -> D^{*}π$ Decays

We analyze final state strong interaction effects in $B -> D ρ$ and $B -> D^{*}π$ decays using the Regge model. We find that, due to the smallness of the contributions from the non-leading Regge trajectories ($ρ$, $f$, $π$ etc.), final state interaction phases are small if the Pomeron coupling to the charm quark is suppressed in comparison to lighter quarks. Our conclusion is that for $B$ decays into states containing charm, final state interaction effects should play a minor role.

On the Decay Mode $B^- \to μ^- \bar ν_μγ$

A QCD relativistic potential model is employed to compute the decay rate and the photon spectrum of the process $B^- \to μ^- {\bar ν}_μγ$. The result ${\cal B}(B^- \to μ^- {\bar ν}_μγ) \simeq 1 \times 10^{-6}$ confirms the enhancement of this decay channel with respect to the purely leptonic mode, and supports the proposal of using this process to access relevant hadronic quantities such as the $B$-meson leptonic decay constant and the CKM matrix element $V_{ub}$.

Phenomenology of Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians

The approximate symmetries of Quantum ChromoDynamics in the infinite heavy quark ($Q=c,b$) mass limit ($m_Q \to \infty$) and in the chiral limit for the light quarks ($m_q \to 0,\;q=\,u,\,d,\,s$) can be used together to build up an effective chiral lagrangian for heavy and light mesons describing strong interactions among effective meson fields as well as their couplings to electromagnetic and weak currents, including the relevant symmetry breaking terms. The effective theory includes heavy ($Q \bar q$) mesons of both negative and positive parity, light pseudoscalars, as well as light vector mesons. We summarize the estimates for the parameters entering the effective lagrangian and discuss in particular some phenomenologically important couplings, such as $g_{B^* B π}$. The hyperfine splitting of heavy mesons is discussed in detail. The effective lagrangian allows for the possibility to describe consistently weak couplings of heavy ($B,\, D$) to light ($π,\, ρ, \, K^*,\,$ etc.) mesons. The method has however its own limitations, due to the requirement that the light meson momenta should be small, and we discuss how such limitations can be circumvented through reasonable ansatz on the form factors. Flavour conserving (e. g. $B^* \to B\, γ$) and flavour changing (e. g. $B \to K^* \, γ$) radiative decays provide another field of applications of effective lagrangians; they are discussed together with their phenomenological implications. Finally we analyze effective lagrangians describing heavy charmonium- like ($\bar Q Q$) mesons and their strong and electromagnetic interactions. The role of approximate heavy quark symmetries for this case and the phenomenological tests of these models are also discussed.

Leptonic Constant from B Meson Radiative Decay

We propose a method to determine the leptonic decay constant $f_{B^*}$ in the infinite heavy quark mass limit from the analysis of the radiative decay mode $B^- \to \ell^- {\bar ν}_\ell γ$. The method relies on HQET symmetries and on experimental data from $D^{*0} \to D^0 γ$.

On the $b-$ Quark Kinetic Energy in the $Λ_b$

We consider the problem of determining the matrix element of the heavy quark kinetic energy operator between $Λ_b$ baryonic states by three point function QCD sum rules in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. We discuss the main features and the uncertainties associated to such an approach. Numerically, we find the result: ${\langle{\cal K}\rangle}_{Λ_b} = - (0.6 \pm 0.1) \; GeV^2$. Within the uncertainty of the method, such result indicates a value of the heavy quark kinetic energy in the baryon similar in size to that in the meson.

$Υ(4S)\to B^0 \bar{B^0} γ$ Background at B-Factories

We give an estimate of the $C$-even $B^0 \bar{B^0}$ background coming from the radiative decay $Υ(4S)\to B^0\bar B^0γ$ at $B$-factories. Our result $B(Υ(4S)\to B^0\bar B^0γ) \simeq 3 \times 10^{-9}$ shows that such background could be safely neglected in the analyses of $CP$ violating effects.

Strong coupling of excited heavy mesons

We compute the strong coupling constant $G_{B^{**} B π} \; (G_{D^{**} D π})$, where $B^{**}$ ($D^{**}$) is the $0^+$ $P-$wave $b \bar q \; (c \bar q)$ state, by QCD sum rules and by light-cone sum rules. The two methods give compatible results in the limit $m_Q \to \infty$, with a rather large value of the coupling constant. We apply the results to the calculation of the hadronic widths of the positive parity $B$ and $D$ states and to the chiral loop contribution to the ratio $f_{D_s}/f_D$.
