The Restriction Principle and Commuting Families of Toeplitz Operators on the Unit Ball

On the unit ball B^n we consider the weighted Bergman spaces H_λand their Toeplitz operators with bounded symbols. It is known from our previous work that if a closed subgroup H of \widetilde{\SU(n,1)} has a multiplicity-free restriction for the holomorphic discrete series of $\widetilde{\SU(n,1)}$, then the family of Toeplitz operators with H-invariant symbols pairwise commute. In this work we consider the case of maximal abelian subgroups of \widetilde{\SU(n,1)} and provide a detailed proof of the pairwise commutativity of the corresponding Toeplitz operators. To achieve this we explicitly develop the restriction principle for each (conjugacy class of) maximal abelian subgroup and obtain the corresponding Segal-Bargmann transform. In particular, we obtain a multiplicity one result for the restriction of the holomorphic discrete series to all maximal abelian subgroups. We also observe that the Segal-Bargman transform is (up to a unitary transformation) a convolution operator against a function that we write down explicitly for each case. This can be used to obtain the explicit simultaneous diagonalization of Toeplitz operators whose symbols are invariant by one of these maximal abelian subgroups.

Reflection negative kernels and fractional Brownian motion

In this article we study the connection of fractional Brownian motion, representation theory and reflection positivity in quantum physics. We introduce and study reflection positivity for affine isometric actions of a Lie group on a Hilbert space E and show in particular that fractional Brownian motion for Hurst index 0<H\le 1/2 is reflection positive and leads via reflection positivity to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space if 0<H <1/2. We also study projective invariance of fractional Brownian motion and relate this to the complementary series representations of GL(2,R). We relate this to a measure preserving action on a Gaussian L^2-Hilbert space L^2(E).

Reflection positivity on real intervals

We study functions f : (a,b) ---> R on open intervals in R with respect to various kinds of positive and negative definiteness conditions. We say that f is positive definite if the kernel f((x + y)/2) is positive definite. We call f negative definite if, for every h > 0, the function e^{-hf} is positive definite. Our first main result is a Lévy--Khintchine formula (an integral representation) for negative definite functions on arbitrary intervals. For (a,b) = (0,\infty) it generalizes classical results by Bernstein and Horn. On a symmetric interval (-a,a), we call f reflection positive if it is positive definite and, in addition, the kernel f((x - y)/2) is positive definite. We likewise define reflection negative functions and obtain a Lévy--Khintchine formula for reflection negative functions on all of R. Finally, we obtain a characterization of germs of reflection negative functions on 0-neighborhoods in R.

Reflection positive affine actions and stochastic processes

In this note we continue our investigations of the representation theoretic aspects of reflection positivity, also called Osterwalder--Schrader positivity. We explain how this concept relates to affine isometric actions on real Hilbert spaces and how this is connected with Gaussian processes with stationary increments.

An application of hypergeometric shift operators to the chi-spherical Fourier transform

We study the action of hypergeometric shift operators on the Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions associated with the $BC_n$ type root system and some negative multiplicities. Those hypergeometric functions are connected to the $χ$-spherical functions on Hermitian symmetric spaces $U/K$ where $χ$ is a nontrivial character of $K$. We apply shift operators to the hypergeometric functions to move negative multiplicities to positive ones. This allows us to use many well-known results of the hypergeometric functions associated with positive multiplicities. In particular, we use this technique to achieve exponential estimates for the $χ$-spherical functions. The motive comes from the Paley-Wiener type theorem on line bundles over Hermitian symmetric spaces.

On the Life and Work of S. Helgason

This article is a contribution to a Festschrift for S. Helgason. After a biographical sketch, we survey some of his research on several topics in geometric and harmonic analysis during his long and influential career. While not an exhaustive presentation of all facets of his research, for those topics covered we include reference to the current status of these areas.

The Full Laplace-Beltrami operator on U(N) and SU(N)

The Laplacian on the Lie groups U(N) and SU(N) is given in a parametrized edition for practical purposes. The radial part is often seen in work on lattice gauge theory, but here is derived also the off-diagonal part which in SU(3) and U(3) is expressed via the well known Gell-Mann matrices but with a more easily memorized notation. Relations to I, U and V spin are also shown.

Support properties and Holmgren's uniqueness theorem for differential operators with hyperplane singularities

Let W be a finite Coxeter group acting linearly on $R^n$. In this article we study support properties of W-invariant partial differential operator D on $\R^n$ with real analytic coefficients. Our assumption is that the principal symbol of D has a special form, related to the root system corresponding to W. In particular the zeros of the principal symbol are supposed to be located on hyperplanes fixed by reflections in W. We show that conv(supp Df) = conv(supp f) holds for all compactly supported smooth functions f so that conv(supp f) is W-invariant. The main tools in the proof are Holmgren's uniqueness theorem and some elementary convex geometry. Several examples and applications linked to the theory of special functions associated with root systems are presented.

Multiscaled wavelet transforms, ridgelet transforms, and Radon transforms on the space of matrices

Let $M$ be the space of real $n\times m$ matrices which can be identified with the Euclidean space $R^{nm}$. We introduce continuous wavelet transforms on $M$ with a multivalued scaling parameter represented by a positive definite symmetric matrix. These transforms agree with the polar decomposition on $M$ and coincide with classical ones in the rank-one case $m=1$. We prove an analog of Calderon's reproducing formula for $L^2$-functions and obtain explicit inversion formulas for the Riesz potentials and Radon transforms on $M$. We also introduce continuous ridgelet transforms associated to matrix planes in $M$. An inversion formula for these transforms follows from that for the Radon transform.

Paley-Wiener theorems for the $Θ$-spherical transform: an overview

The aim of this article is to give an overview of several types of Paley-Wiener theorems occuring in harmonic analysis related to symmetric spaces. This will serve as a motivation for the introduction of the $Θ$-spherical functions, the correspondint $Θ$-spherical Fourier transform, and the Paley-Wiener theorem for this transform. Up to now such a theorem has only been proven in very special cases, and still, its formulation and proof are very technical. In this paper we do not go into details of the proofs, but present an overview which explains the different examples which have inspired and motivated the theory of $Θ$-spherical functions.

Fock spaces corresponding to positive definite linear transformations

Suppose $A$ is a positive real linear transformation on a finite dimensional complex inner product space $V$. The reproducing kernel for the Fock space of square integrable holomorphic functions on $V$ relative to the Gaussian measure $dμ_A(z)=\frac {\sqrt {\det A}} {π^n}e^{-{\rm Re}< Az,z>} dz$ is described in terms of the holomorphic--antiholomorphic decomposition of the linear operator $A$. Moreover, if $A$ commutes with a conjugation on $V$, then a restriction mapping to the real vectors in $V$ is polarized to obtain a Segal--Bargmann transform, which we also study in the Gaussian-measure setting.

The Continuous Wavelet Transform and Symmetric Spaces

The continuous wavelet transform has become a widely used tool in applied science during the last decade. In this article we discuss some generalizations coming from actions of closed subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ acting on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we propose a way to invert the wavelet transform in the case where the stabilizer of a generic point in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is not compact, but a symmetric subgroup, a case that has not previously been discussed in the literature.
