Internal chaos in an open quantum system: From Ericson to conductance fluctuations

The model of an open Fermi-system is used for studying the interplay of intrinsic chaos and irreversible decay into open continuum channels. Two versions of the model are characterized by one-body chaos coming from disorder or by many-body chaos due to the inter-particle interactions. The continuum coupling is described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Our main interest is in specific correlations of cross sections for various channels in dependence on the coupling strength and degree of internal chaos. The results are generic and refer to common features of various mesoscopic objects including conductance fluctuations and resonance nuclear reactions.

Reduction of laser intensity scintillations in turbulent atmospheres using time averaging of a partially coherent beam

We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that the application of a partially coherent beam (PCB) in combination with time averaging leads to a significant reduction in the scintillation index. We use a simplified experimental approach in which the atmospheric turbulence is simulated by a phase diffuser. The role of the speckle size, the amplitude of the phase modulation, and the strength of the atmospheric turbulence are examined. We obtain good agreement between our numerical simulations and our experimental results. This study provides a useful foundation for future applications of PCB-based methods of scintillation reduction in physical atmospheres.

Influence of Phase Diffuser Dynamics on Scintillations of Laser Radiation in Earth Atmosphere: Long-Distance Propagation

The effect of a random phase diffuser on fluctuations of laser light (scintillations) is studied. Not only spatial but also temporal phase variations introduced by the phase diffuser are analyzed. The explicit dependence of the scintillation index on finite-time phase variations is obtained for long propagation paths. It is shown that for large amplitudes of phase fluctuations, a finite-time effect decreases the ability of phase diffuser to suppress the scintillations.

Dynamics of Collective Decoherence and Thermalization

We analyze the dynamics of N interacting spins (quantum register) collectively coupled to a thermal environment. Each spin experiences the same environment interaction, consisting of an energy conserving and an energy exchange part. We find the decay rates of the reduced density matrix elements in the energy basis. We show that if the spins do not interact among each other, then the fastest decay rates of off-diagonal matrix elements induced by the energy conserving interaction is of order N^2, while that one induced by the energy exchange interaction is of the order N only. Moreover, the diagonal matrix elements approach their limiting values at a rate independent of N. For a general spin system the decay rates depend in a rather complicated (but explicit) way on the size N and the interaction between the spins. Our method is based on a dynamical quantum resonance theory valid for small, fixed values of the couplings. We do not make Markov-, Born- or weak coupling (van Hove) approximations.

Continuum shell model: From Ericson to conductance fluctuations

We discuss an approach for studying the properties of mesoscopic systems, where discrete and continuum parts of the spectrum are equally important. The approach can be applied (i) to stable heavy nuclei and complex atoms near the continuum threshold, (ii) to nuclei far from the region of nuclear stability, both of the regions being of great current interest, and (iii) to mesoscopic devices with interacting electrons. The goal is to develop a new consistent version of the continuum shell model that simultaneously takes into account strong interaction between fermions and coupling to the continuum. Main attention is paid to the formation of compound resonances, their statistical properties, and correlations of the cross sections. We study the Ericson fluctuations of overlapping resonances and show that the continuum shell model nicely describes universal properties of the conductance fluctuations.

Transition from isolated to overlapping resonances in the open system of interacting fermions

We study the statistical properties of resonance widths and spacings in an open system of interacting fermions at the transition between isolated and overlapping resonances, where a radical change in the width distribution occurs. Our main interest is to reveal how this transition is influenced by the onset of chaos in the internal dynamics as the strength of random two-body interaction between the particles increases. We have found that in the region of overlapped resonances, the fluctuations of the widths (rather than their mean values) are strongly affected by the onset of an internal chaos. The results may be applied to the analysis of neutron cross sections, as well as in the physics of mesoscopic devices with strongly interacting electrons.

Intrinsic dissipation in cantilevers

We consider the effects of a velocity-independent friction force on cantilever damping. It is shown that this dissipation mechanism causes nonlinear effects in the cantilever vibrations. The size of the nonlinearity increases with decreasing cantilever velocity. Our analysis makes it possible to understand experiments [Stipe et al, PRL 87, 096801 (2001)] where an amplitude dependence of the cantilever eigenfrequency and anomalous dissipation was observed only at small amplitudes.

Beam Wandering in the Atmosphere: The Effect of Partial Coherence

The effect of a random phase screen on laser beam wander in a turbulent atmosphere is studied theoretically. The method of photon distribution function is used to describe the photon kinetics of both weak and strong turbulence. By bringing together analytical and numerical calculations, we have obtained the variance of beam centroid deflections caused by scattering on turbulent eddies. It is shown that an artificial distortion of the initial coherence of the radiation can be used to decrease the wandering effect. The physical mechanism responsible for this reduction and applicability of our approach are discussed.

Open system of interacting fermions: Statistical properties of cross sections and fluctuations

Statistical properties of cross sections are studied for an open system of interacting fermions. The description is based on the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that accounts for the existence of open decay channels preserving the unitarity of the scattering matrix. The intrinsic interaction is modelled by the two-body random ensemble of variable strength. In particular, the crossover region from isolated to overlapping resonances accompanied by the effect of the width redistribution creating super-radiant and trapped states is studied in detail. The important observables, such as average cross section, its fluctuations, autocorrelation functions of the cross section and scattering matrix, are very sensitive to the coupling of the intrinsic states to the continuum around the crossover. A detailed comparison is made of our results with standard predictions of statistical theory of cross sections, such as the Hauser-Feshbach formula for the average cross section and Ericson theory of fluctuations and correlations of cross sections. Strong deviations are found in the crossover region, along with the dependence on intrinsic interactions and degree of chaos inside the system.

The Effect of Partial Coherence on the Statistics of Single-Photon Pulses Propagating in the Atmosphere

The photon density operator function is used to describe the propagation of single-photon pulses through a turbulent atmosphere. The effects of statistical properties of photon source and the effects of a random phase screen on the variance of photon counting are studied. A procedure for reducing the total noise is discussed. The physical mechanisms responsible for this reduction are explained.

Resonance Theory of Decoherence and Thermalization

We present a rigorous analysis of the phenomenon of decoherence for general $N-$level systems coupled to reservoirs. The latter are described by free massless bosonic fields. We apply our general results to the specific cases of the qubit and the quantum register. We compare our results with the explicitly solvable case of systems whose interaction with the environment does not allow for energy exchange (non-demolition, or energy conserving interactions). We suggest a new approach which applies to a wide variety of systems which are not explicitly solvable.

Quantum Annealing for Heisenberg Spin Chains

We suggest using the method of quantum annealing for computing the ground state of the Heisenberg spin chains. Our initial Hamiltonian describes a spin system in a highly non-uniform magnetic field. The initial Hamiltonian gradually transforms into the Heisenberg Hamiltonian, which describes the exchange interaction and the Zeeman interaction with the uniform magnetic field. We demonstrate quantum annealing for 2-, 3-, and 9-spin systems. In particular, we consider the alternate (ferro- and antiferromagnetic) exchange integral. By changing the sign of the exchange integrals we switch from the frustrated to the corresponding non-frustrated spin system. We discuss the similarity and difference between the frustrated and non-frustrated spin systems.

Influence of qubit displacements on quantum logic operations in a silicon-based quantum computer with constant interaction

The errors caused by qubit displacements from their prescribed locations in an ensemble of spin chains are estimated analytically and calculated numerically for a quantum computer based on phosphorus donors in silicon. We show that it is possible to polarize (initialize) the nuclear spins even with displaced qubits by using Controlled NOT gates between the electron and nuclear spins of the same phosphorus atom. However, a Controlled NOT gate between the displaced electron spins is implemented with large error because of the exponential dependence of exchange interaction constant on the distance between the qubits. If quantum computation is implemented on an ensemble of many spin chains, the errors can be small if the number of chains with displaced qubits is small.

Non-Linear Beam Splitter in Bose-Einstein Condensate Interferometers

A beam splitter is an important component of an atomic/optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Here we study a Bose Einstein Condensate beam splitter, realized with a double well potential of tunable height. We analyze how the sensitivity of a Mach Zehnder interferometer is degraded by the non-linear particle-particle interaction during the splitting dynamics. We distinguish three regimes, Rabi, Josephson and Fock, and associate to them a different scaling of the phase sensitivity with the total number of particles.

Photon Distribution Function for Long-Distance Propagation of Partially Coherent Beams through the Turbulent Atmosphere

The photon density operator function is used to calculate light beam propagation through turbulent atmosphere. A kinetic equation for the photon distribution function is derived and solved using the method of characteristics. Optical wave correlations are described in terms of photon trajectories that depend on fluctuations of the refractive index. It is shown that both linear and quadratic disturbances produce sizable effects for long-distance propagation. The quadratic terms are shown to suppress the correlation of waves with different wave vectors. We examine the intensity fluctuations of partially coherent beams (beams whose initial spatial coherence is partially destroyed). Our calculations show that it is possible to significantly reduce the intensity fluctuations by using a partially coherent beam. The physical mechanism responsible for this pronounced reduction is similar to that of the Hanbury-Braun, Twiss effect.

Creation of entanglement in a scalable spin quantum computer with long-range dipole-dipole interaction between qubits

Creation of entanglement is considered theoretically and numerically in an ensemble of spin chains with dipole-dipole interaction between the spins. The unwanted effect of the long-range dipole interaction is compensated by the optimal choice of the parameters of radio-frequency pulses implementing the protocol. The errors caused by (i) the influence of the environment,(ii) non-selective excitations, (iii) influence of different spin chains on each other, (iv) displacements of qubits from their perfect locations, and (v) fluctuations of the external magnetic field are estimated analytically and calculated numerically. For the perfectly entangled state the z component, M, of the magnetization of the whole system is equal to zero. The errors lead to a finite value of M. If the number of qubits in the system is large, M can be detected experimentally. Using the fact that M depends differently on the parameters of the system for each kind of error, varying these parameters would allow one to experimentally determine the most significant source of errors and to optimize correspondingly the quantum computer design in order to decrease the errors and M. Using our approach one can benchmark the quantum computer, decrease the errors, and prepare the quantum computer for implementation of more complex quantum algorithms.

Dynamics of Open Bosonic Quantum Systems in Coherent State Representation

We consider the problem of decoherence and relaxation of open bosonic quantum systems from a perspective alternative to the standard master equation or quantum trajectories approaches. Our method is based on the dynamics of expectation values of observables evaluated in a coherent state representation. We examine a model of a quantum nonlinear oscillator with a density-density interaction with a collection of environmental oscillators at finite temperature. We derive the exact solution for dynamics of observables and demonstrate a consistent perturbation approach.
