Confirmation of the spectral excess in DAMIC at SNOLAB with skipper CCDs

We present results from a 3.25 kg-day target exposure of two silicon charge-coupled devices (CCDs), each with 24 megapixels and skipper readout, deployed in the DAMIC setup at SNOLAB. With a reduction in pixel readout noise of a factor of 10 relative to the previous detector, we investigate the excess population of low-energy events in the CCD bulk previously observed above expected backgrounds. We address the dominant systematic uncertainty of the previous analysis through a depth fiducialization designed to reject surface backgrounds on the CCDs. The measured bulk ionization spectrum confirms the presence of an excess population of low-energy events in the CCD target with characteristic rate of ${\sim}7$ events per kg-day and electron-equivalent energies of ${\sim}80~$eV, whose origin remains unknown.

On the geometry and quantum theory of regular and singular spinors

We relate the Lounesto classification of regular and singular spinors to the orbits of the $Spin(3,1)$ group in the space of Dirac spinors. We find that regular spinors are associated with the principal orbits of the spin group while singular spinors are associated with special orbits whose isotropy group is $C$. We use this to clarify some aspects of the classical and quantum theory of spinors restricted to a class in this classification. In particular, we show that the degrees of freedom of an ELKO field, which has been proposed as a candidate for dark matter, can be reexpressed as a Dirac field preserving locality. Alternatively after introducing the ELKO dual, it can be re-interpreted as four anticommuting Lorentz scalar fields with internal symmetry the spin representation of the Lorentz group. We also propose an interacting Lagrangian which can consistently describe all 6 classes of regular and singular spinors.

Derivations, holonomy groups and heterotic geometry

We investigate the superalgebra of derivations generated by the fundamental forms on manifolds with reduced structure group. In particular, we point out a relation between the algebra of derivations of heterotic geometries that admit Killing spinors and the commutator algebra of holonomy symmetries in sigma models. We use this to propose a Lie bracket on the space of fundamental forms of all heterotic geometries with a non-compact holonomy group and present the associated derivation algebras. We also explore the extension of these results to heterotic geometries with compact holonomy groups and, more generally, to manifolds with reduced structure group. A brief review of the classification of heterotic geometries that admit Killing spinors and an extension of this classification to some heterotic inspired geometries are also included.

W-symmetries, anomalies and heterotic backgrounds with non-compact holonomy

We determine the algebra of holonomy symmetries of sigma models propagating on supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds with a non-compact holonomy group. We demonstrate that these close as a W-algebra, which in turn is specified by a Lie algebra structure on the space of covariantly constant forms that generate the holonomy symmetries. In addition, we identify the chiral anomalies associated with these symmetries. We argue that these anomalies are consistent and can be cancelled up to two loops in the sigma model perturbation theory.

W-symmetries, anomalies and heterotic backgrounds with SU holonomy

We show that the sigma models with target spaces supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds with $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ holonomy are invariant under a W-symmetry algebra generated by the covariantly constant forms of these backgrounds. The closure of the W-algebra requires additional generators which we identify. We prove that the chiral anomalies of all these symmetries are consistent at one-loop in perturbation theory. We also demonstrate that these anomalies cancel at the same loop level either by adding suitable finite local counterterms in the sigma model effective action or by assuming a plausible quantum correction to the transformations. Such a correction is compatible with both the cancellation mechanism for spacetime frame rotation and gauge transformation anomalies, and the correction to the heterotic supergravity up to two loops in the sigma model perturbation theory.

First Constraints from DAMIC-M on Sub-GeV Dark-Matter Particles Interacting with Electrons

We report constraints on sub-GeV dark matter particles interacting with electrons from the first underground operation of DAMIC-M detectors. The search is performed with an integrated exposure of 85.23 g days, and exploits the subelectron charge resolution and low level of dark current of DAMIC-M charge-coupled devices (CCDs). Dark-matter-induced ionization signals above the detector dark current are searched for in CCD pixels with charge up to 7e$^-$. With this dataset we place limits on dark matter particles of mass between 0.53 and 1000 MeV/$c^2$, excluding unexplored regions of parameter space in the mass ranges [1.6,1000] MeV/$c^2$ and [1.5,15.1] MeV/$c^2$ for ultralight and heavy mediator interactions, respectively.

TCFHs and hidden symmetries of type IIA AdS backgrounds

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFHs) of warped (massive) IIA AdS backgrounds. As a consequence we demonstrate that all Killing spinor form bilinears satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to the TCFH connections. We also explore some of the properties of TCFHs which include the reduced holonomy of the minimal TCFH connections for generic backgrounds. Furthermore, we investigate the interplay between TCFHs and hidden symmetries of probes propagating on IIA AdS backgrounds. We find that some of the Killing spinor form bilinears of near horizon geometries of a class of IIA intersecting brane configurations are Killing-Yano forms and so generate hidden symmetries for spinning particle probes.

The DAMIC-M Experiment: Status and First Results

The DAMIC-M (DArk Matter In CCDs at Modane) experiment employs thick, fully depleted silicon charged-coupled devices (CCDs) to search for dark matter particles with a target exposure of 1 kg-year. A novel skipper readout implemented in the CCDs provides single electron resolution through multiple non-destructive measurements of the individual pixel charge, pushing the detection threshold to the eV-scale. DAMIC-M will advance by several orders of magnitude the exploration of the dark matter particle hypothesis, in particular of candidates pertaining to the so-called "hidden sector." A prototype, the Low Background Chamber (LBC), with 20g of low background Skipper CCDs, has been recently installed at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane and is currently taking data. We will report the status of the DAMIC-M experiment and first results obtained with LBC commissioning data.

TCFHs, IIB warped AdS backgrounds and hidden symmetries

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFHs) on the internal spaces of all type IIB warped AdS backgrounds. As a result we demonstrate that the form bilinears on the internal spaces satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equation. We also explore some of the properties of the TCFHs, like for example the holonomy of the TCFH connections. In addition, we present examples where the form bilinears generate hidden symmetries for particle probes propagating on the internal spaces of some AdS backgrounds. These include the maximally supersymmetric AdS$_5$ solution as well as some of the near horizon geometries of intersecting IIB branes.

Precision measurement of Compton scattering in silicon with a skipper CCD for dark matter detection

Experiments aiming to directly detect dark matter through particle recoils can achieve energy thresholds of $\mathcal{O}(1\,\mathrm{eV})$. In this regime, ionization signals from small-angle Compton scatters of environmental $γ$-rays constitute a significant background. Monte Carlo simulations used to build background models have not been experimentally validated at these low energies. We report a precision measurement of Compton scattering on silicon atomic shell electrons down to 23$\,$eV. A skipper charge-coupled device (CCD) with single-electron resolution, developed for the DAMIC-M experiment, was exposed to a $^{241}$Am $γ$-ray source over several months. Features associated with the silicon K, L$_{1}$, and L$_{2,3}$-shells are clearly identified, and scattering on valence electrons is detected for the first time below 100$\,$eV. We find that the relativistic impulse approximation for Compton scattering, which is implemented in Monte Carlo simulations commonly used by direct detection experiments, does not reproduce the measured spectrum below 0.5$\,$keV. The data are in better agreement with $ab$ $initio$ calculations originally developed for X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

The TCFHs of D=11 AdS backgrounds and hidden symmetries

We present the TCFHs of all AdS backgrounds of 11-dimensional supergravity and explore some of the properties of the associated connections. Therefore we demonstrate that all Killing spinor bilinears satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equations with respect to the TCFH connection. In addition we explore the hidden symmetries of spinning particle probes propagating on these backgrounds. We give several examples of hidden symmetries for probes on the maximal supersymmetric AdS backgrounds as well as on some AdS backgrounds that arise as near horizon geometries of intersecting M-branes.

TCFHs, hidden symmetries and M-theory backgrounds

We present the TCFH of 11-dimensional supergravity and so demonstrate that the form bilinears of supersymmetric solutions satisfy a generalisation of the conformal Killing-Yano equation with resepct to the TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric M-branes that include the M2-brane, M5-brane, KK-monopole and pp-wave and demonstrate that their geodesic flows are completely integrable by giving all independent conserved charges in involution. We then find that all form bilinears of pp-wave and KK-monopole solutions generate (hidden) symmetries for spinning particle probes propagating on these backgrounds. Moreover, there are Killing spinors such that some of the 1-, 2- and 3-form bilinears of the M2-brane solution also generate symmetries for spinning particle probes. We also explore the question on whether the form bilinears are sufficient to prove the integrability of particle probe dynamics on 11-dimensional supersymmetric backgrounds.

TCFHs, hidden symmetries and type II theories

We present the twisted covariant form hierarchies (TCFH) of type IIA and IIB 10-dimensional supergravities and show that all form bilinears of supersymmetric backgrounds satisfy the conformal Killing-Yano equation with respect to a TCFH connection. We also compute the Killing-Stäckel, Killing-Yano and closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of all spherically symmetric type II brane backgrounds and demonstrate that the geodesic flow on these solutions is completely integrable by giving all independent charges in involution. We then identify all form bilinears of common sector and D-brane backgrounds which generate hidden symmetries for particle and string probe actions. We also explore the question on whether charges constructed from form bilinears are sufficient to prove the integrability of probes on supersymmetric backgrounds.

Geometry and symmetries of null G-structures

We present a definition of null G-structures on Lorentzian manifolds and investigate their geometric properties. This definition includes the Robinson structure on 4-dimensional black holes as well as the null structures that appear in all supersymmetric solutions of supergravity theories. We also identify the induced geometry on some null hypersurfaces and that on the orbit spaces of null geodesic congruences in such Lorentzian manifolds. We give the algebra of diffeomorphisms that preserves a null G-structure and demonstrate that in some cases it interpolates between the BMS algebra of an asymptotically flat spacetime and the Lorentz symmetry algebra of a Killing horizon.

Vacuum states from a resolution of the lightcone singularity

The lightcone singularity at the origin is resolved by blowing up the singular point to $CP^1$. The Lorentz group acts on the resolved lightcone and has $CP^1$ as a special orbit. Using Wigner's method of associating unitary irreducible representations of the Poincaré group to particle states, we find that the special orbit gives rise to new vacuum states. These vacuum states are labelled by the principal series representations of $SL(2,C)$. Some remarks are included on the applications of these results to gauge theories and asymptotically flat spacetimes.

Symmetries, Spinning Particles and the TCFH of D=4,5 Minimal Supergravities

We find that spinning particles with suitable couplings propagating in certain supersymmetric backgrounds of $D=4$, $N=2$ and $D=5$, $N=1$ minimal supergravities are invariant under symmetries generated by the twisted covariant form hierarchies of these theories. We also compare our results with the symmetries of spinning particles generated by Killing-Yano forms which are responsible for the separability properties of some gravitational backgrounds.

Eigenvalue estimates for multi-form modified Dirac operators

We give estimates for the eigenvalues of multi-form modified Dirac operators which are constructed from a standard Dirac operator with the addition of a Clifford algebra element associated to a multi-degree form. In particular such estimates are presented for modified Dirac operators with a $k$-degree form $0\leq k\leq 4$, those modified with multi-degree $(0,k)$-form $0\leq k\leq 3$ and the horizon Dirac operators which are modified with a multi-degree $(1,2,4)$-form. In particular, we give the necessary geometric conditions for such operators to admit zero modes as well as those for the zero modes to be parallel with a respect to a suitable connection. We also demonstrate that manifolds which admit such parallel spinors are associated with twisted covariant form hierarchies which generalize the conformal Killing-Yano forms.

Symmetries, a systematic construction of invariant fields and AdS backgrounds

We give a systematic local description of invariant metrics and other invariant fields on a spacetime under the action of a (non-abelian) group. This includes the invariant fields in a neighbourhood of a principal and a special orbit. The construction is illustrated with examples. We also apply the formalism to give the R-symmetry invariant metrics of some AdS backgrounds and comment on applications to Kaluza-Klein theory.
