Particle Ratios at High p_T at LHC Energies

Hadron production has been calculated in a pQCD improved parton model for pp, dA and heavy ion collisions. We applied KKP and AKK fragmentation functions. Our jet fragmentation study shows, that hadron ratios at high p_T depend on quark contribution mostly and less on the gluonic one. This finding can be seen in jet-energy loss calculations, also. We display the suppression pattern on different hadron ratios in PbPb collisions at LHC energies.

Does the Cronin Peak Disappear at LHC Energies?

In this work we compare the nuclear modification factors in proton (deuteron) -- nucleus collisions at CERN SPS, FNAL and RHIC energies in a wide p_T range. In these experiments the nuclear modification factor has shown an enhancement at p_T ~ 4 GeV/c. The height of this "Cronin peak" depends on the c.m. energy of the collision, as it is subject to stronger shadowing at higher energies. One of the aims of this contribution is to analyze the shadowing phenomenon at lower (2 GeV/c < p_T < 4 GeV/c) and intermediate (4 GeV/c < p_T < 8 GeV/c) transverse momentum. Different shadowing parameterizations are considered and the obtained Cronin peaks are investigated at RHIC and LHC energies.

EMC effect and jet energy loss in relativistic deuteron-nucleus collisions

We investigate the influence of modified nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) on high-pT hadron production at RHIC and LHC energies using a pQCD-improved parton model. For application at RHIC, we focus on the possible contribution of the EMC modification of the nuclear PDFs in the x > 0.3 region to the observed suppression of pi0 production at pT > 10 GeV/c in dAu collisions. We study three different parameterizations of the nuclear PDF modifications and find that they give consistent results for R_dAu(pT) for neutral pions in the region 10 GeV/c < pT < 20 GeV/c. We find that the EMC suppression of the parton distributions in the Au nucleus does not strongly influence the R_dAu for pi0 in the pT region where the suppression is observed. Using the HKN parameterization, we evaluate systematic errors in the theoretical R_dAu(pT) resulting from uncertainties in the nuclear PDFs. The measured nuclear modification factor is inconsistent with the pQCD model result for pT > 10 GeV/c even when the systematic uncertainties in the nuclear PDFs are accounted for. The inclusion of a small final-state energy loss can reduce the discrepancy with the data, but we cannot perfectly reproduce the pT dependence of the measured R_dAu(pT). For the LHC, we find that shadowing of the nuclear PDFs produces a large suppression in the yield of hadrons with pT < 100 GeV/c in p(d)A collisions.

Nuclear effects in dAu collisions from recent RHIC data

Neutral pion (pi0) production is calculated in a leading order (LO) perturbative QCD-based model in pp and dAu collisions at s^1/2=200 AGeV at midrapidity. The model includes the transverse component of the initial parton distribution. We compare our results for pp collision to experimental data at RHIC energy. We repeat our calculation for the dAu collision and investigate the interplay between shadowing and multiple scattering. In central $]dAu collisions the influence of possible jet energy loss on cold nuclear matter is discussed and numerical results are displayed.

Jet Tomography in the Forward Direction at RHIC

Hadron production at high-$p_T$ displays a strong suppression pattern in a wide rapidity region in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies. This finding indicates the presence of strong final state effects for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons, namely induced energy loss. We have developed a perturbative QCD based model to describe hadron production in $pp$ collision, which can be combined with the Glauber -- Gribov model to describe hadron production in heavy ion collisions. Investigating $AuAu$ and $CuCu$ collisions at energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ $A$GeV at mid-rapidity, we find the opacity of the strongly interacting hot matter to be proportional to the participant nucleon number. Considering forward rapidities, the suppression pattern indicates the formation of a longitudinally contracted dense deconfined zone in central heavy ion collisions. We determine parameters for the initial geometry from the existing data.

Di-hadron correlations at ISR and RHIC energies

The structure of hadron-hadron correlations is investigated in proton-proton collisions. We focus on the transmission of the initial transverse momenta of partons (``intrinsic $k_T$'') to the hadron-hadron correlations. Values of the intrinsic transverse momentum obtained from experimental correlations are compared to the results of a model with partially randomized parton transverse momenta at ISR and RHIC energies. Procedures for extracting the correlations from data are discussed.

The Nuclear Modification Factor at Large Rapidities

RHIC data on high-$p_T$ hadron production display strong suppression in a wide rapidity region, indicating strong induced energy loss for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons. We investigate the interplay of energy loss and rapidity dependence in a perturbative QCD improved parton model, and estimate the opacity of the produced hot matter in $AuAu$ collisions at energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ $A$GeV and 63 $A$GeV at different rapidity values. Direction-dependent suppression offers the possibility to study the geometry of the hot matter.

Cronin Effect at Different Rapidities at RHIC

Calculations of the nuclear modification factor, R_dAu, for pi^0 production in dAu collisions at s_NN^1/2 = 200 GeV are presented. The applied pQCD-improved parton model incorporates intrinsic k_T. Nuclear multiscattering and nuclear shadowing are considered in the Au nucleus. Theoretical results are displayed for midrapidity and high pseudorapidity (eta), and compared to preliminary PHENIX and BRAHMS data.

Jet Tomography Studies in AuAu Collision at RHIC Energies

Recent RHIC results on pion production in AuAu collision at sqrt(s)=130 and 200 AGeV display a strong suppression effect at high p_T. This suppression can be connected to final state effects, namely jet energy loss induced by the produced dense colored matter. Applying our pQCD-based parton model we perform a quantitative analysis of the measured suppression pattern and determine the opacity of the produced deconfined matter.

Intrinsic parton transverse momentum in next-to-leading-order pion production

We study pion production in proton-proton collisions within a pQCD-improved parton model in next-to-leading order augmented by intrinsic transverse momentum ($k_\perp$) of the partons. We find the introduction of $k_\perp$ necessary to reproduce the experimental data in the CERN SPS to RHIC energy range. We study the influence of intrinsic $k_\perp$ on the so-called $K$ factor, the ratio of the NLO cross section to the Born term. A strong $p_T$ dependence is seen, especially in the 3-6 GeV transverse momentum region of the outgoing pion, where nuclear effects (e.g. the Cronin effect) play an important role.

Nuclear Reaction Mechanisms and the Cronin Effect

The influence of nuclear multiscattering and shadowing on pion spectra is investigated in $pA$ collisions from CERN SPS to RHIC energies. The calculations are performed in a next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD-improved parton model, including intrinsic partonic transverse momentum distributions. The nuclear modification of the pion spectra (Cronin effect) is considered at different targets in a wide energy range. Theoretical predictions are displayed for planned $pA$ experiments at CERN SPS and recent $dAu$ experimental results are analysed at RHIC.

Better than $1/Mflops sustained: a scalable PC-based parallel computer for lattice QCD

We study the feasibility of a PC-based parallel computer for medium to large scale lattice QCD simulations. The Eötvös Univ., Inst. Theor. Phys. cluster consists of 137 Intel P4-1.7GHz nodes with 512 MB RDRAM. The 32-bit, single precision sustained performance for dynamical QCD without communication is 1510 Mflops/node with Wilson and 970 Mflops/node with staggered fermions. This gives a total performance of 208 Gflops for Wilson and 133 Gflops for staggered QCD, respectively (for 64-bit applications the performance is approximately halved). The novel feature of our system is its communication architecture. In order to have a scalable, cost-effective machine we use Gigabit Ethernet cards for nearest-neighbor communications in a two-dimensional mesh. This type of communication is cost effective (only 30% of the hardware costs is spent on the communication). According to our benchmark measurements this type of communication results in around 40% communication time fraction for lattices upto 48^3\cdot96 in full QCD simulations. The price/sustained-performance ratio for full QCD is better than $1/Mflops for Wilson (and around $1.5/Mflops for staggered) quarks for practically any lattice size, which can fit in our parallel computer. The communication software is freely available upon request for non-profit organizations.

High-p_T Pion Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions at RHIC energies

Perturbative QCD results on pion production are presented in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from CERN SPS up to RHIC energy. A K_{jet}(s, p_T, Q) factor obtained from jet production is applied to perform next-to-leading order calculations. Using the intrinsic transverse momentum (k_T) we determined transverse momentum spectra for pions in wide energy region. We have investigated nuclear multiscattering and the Cronin effect at RHIC energies.

Perturbative QCD Results on Pion Production in pp, pA and AA Collisions

We summarize new pQCD results on pion production in proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions. Our calculation introduces intrinsic parton transverse momentum (k_T) and is performed effectively at next-to-leading order (NLO), applying a K factor extracted for jet events. Two different factorization scales, Q=p_{T,jet}/2 and p_{T,jet} are used. Experimental data in pA collisions imply a preference for the latter choice at NLO level. We display our results at CERN SPS for AA collisions.

Stability and instability of a hot and dilute nuclear droplet. II. Dissipative isoscalar modes

Results on dissipative isoscalar modes of a hot and dilute nuclear droplet are presented. As compared to the adiabatic limit (part I), realistic dissipation yields a substantial reduction of the growth rates for all unstable modes, while the area of spinodal instability in the ($\varrho$,T)-plane remains unchanged. The qualitative features of multifragmentation through spinodal decomposition as obtained in the adiabatic limit are not significantly affected by dissipation.

K+/pi+ probes of jet quenching in AA collisions

Non-abelian energy loss in quark gluon plasma is shown to lead to novel hadron ratio suppression patterns in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. We apply recent (GLV) estimates for the gluon radiative energy loss, which increases linearly with the jet energy up to E<20 GeV and depends quadratically on the nuclear radius, R. The K+/π+ ratio is found to be most sensitive to the initial density of the plasma.
