Moving NRQCD for B Form Factors at High Recoil

We derive the continuum and lattice tree-level moving NRQCD (mNRQCD) through order 1/m^2. mNRQCD is a generalization of NRQCD for dealing with hadrons with nonzero velocity u_mu. The quark's total momentum is written as P^mu=Mu^mu+k^mu where k^mu << Mu^mu is discretized and Mu^mu is treated exactly. Radiative corrections to couplings on the lattice are discussed. mNRQCD is particularly useful for calculating B->pi and B->D form factors since errors are similar at low and high recoil.

B_s Mesons using Staggered Light Quarks

Last year we proposed using staggered fermions as the light quarks, combined with nonrelativistic heavy quarks, in simulations of heavy-light mesons. A first round of tests which focuses on the B_s meson has been completed using quenched lattices, and results are presented here for the kinetic B_s mass, the B_s^* - B_s splitting, and f_{B_s}. The next project, already underway, is to compute the B and B_s decay constants and spectra on the n_f = 2+1 and 3 MILC lattices. We report on progress with one set of these configurations.

Heavy-light physics using NRQCD-staggered actions

One leading source of uncertainty in the lattice computation of semi-leptonic form factors in B decay, and to a lesser extent B meson decay constants, comes from the extrapolation of the light quark mass to the physical up/down mass. This talk presents first explorations of simulating the light quark with staggered fermion actions, which are free of the spurious zero modes that effect Wilson-like Dirac operators and are less costly. Methods for fitting to Euclidean-time NRQCD-staggered meson propagators are discussed, and some preliminary spectrum results are presented.

Highly Improved Naive and Staggered Fermions

We present a new action for highly improved staggered fermions. We show that perturbative calculations for the new action are well-behaved where those of the conventional staggered action are badly behaved. We discuss the effects of the new terms in controlling flavor mixing, and discuss the design of operators for the action.

Order (alpha^2 Gamma, alpha^3 Gamma) Binding Effects in Orthopositronium Decay

We present a new, simplified analysis of the low-energy electron-positron interaction, and use the resulting effective theory to calculate the binding effects that contribute to the decay rate, Gamma, of orthopositronium, through Order(alpha^3 ln(alpha) Gamma). We express the total decay rate in terms of the annihilation rate for a free electron and positron at threshold, which has just recently been computed to sufficient precision. Our result corrects errors in a previous analysis.

Muonium Decay

Modifications of the mu+ lifetime in matter due to muonium (M = mu+ e-) formation and other medium effects are examined. Muonium and free mu+ decay spectra are found to differ at O(alpha m_e/m_mu) from Doppler broadening and O(alpha^2 m_e/m_mu) from the Coulomb bound state potential. However, both types of corrections are shown to cancel in the total decay rate due to Lorentz and gauge invariance respectively, leaving a very small time dilation lifetime difference, (tau_M - tau_mu+)/tau_mu+ = alpha^2 m_e^2/ 2m_mu^2 \simeq 6\times 10^-10, as the dominant bound state effect. It is argued that other medium effects on the stopped mu+ lifetime are similarly suppressed.

Flavor-Symmetry Restoration and Symanzik Improvement for Staggered Quarks

We resolve contradictions in the literature concerning the origins and size of unphysical flavor-changing strong interactions generated by the staggered-quark discretization of QCD. We show that the leading contributions are tree-level in $\order(a^2)$ and that they can be removed by adding three correction terms to the link operator in the standard action. These corrections are part of the systematic Symanzik improvement of the staggered-quark action. We present a new improved action for staggered quarks that is accurate up to errors of $\order(a^4,a^2α_s)$ --- more accurate than most, if not all, other discretizations of light-quark dynamics.

Perturbative coefficients for improved actions by Monte Carlo at large $β$

Perturbative estimates of operator coefficients for improved lattice actions are becoming increasingly important for precision simulations of many hadronic observables. Following previous work by Dimm, Lepage, and Mackenzie, we consider the feasibility of computing operator coefficients from numerical simulations deep in the perturbative region of lattice theories. Here we introduce a background field technique that may allow for the computation of the coefficients of clover-field operators in a variety of theories. This method is tested by calculations of the renormalized quark mass in lattice NRQCD, and of the $O(α_s)$ clover coefficient for Sheikholeslami-Wohlert fermions. First results for the coefficient of the magnetic moment operator in NRQCD are also presented.

Rigorous QCD Analysis of Inclusive Annihilation and Production of Heavy Quarkonium

A rigorous QCD analysis of the inclusive annihilation decay rates of heavy quarkonium states is presented. The effective-field-theory framework of nonrelativistic QCD is used to separate the short-distance scale of annihilation, which is set by the heavy quark mass $M$, from the longer-distance scales associated with quarkonium structure. The annihilation decay rates are expressed in terms of nonperturbative matrix elements of 4-fermion operators in nonrelativistic QCD, with coefficients that can be computed using perturbation theory in the coupling constant $α_s(M)$. The matrix elements are organized into a hierarchy according to their scaling with $v$, the typical velocity of the heavy quark. An analogous factorization formalism is developed for the production cross sections of heavy quarkonium in processes involving momentum transfers of order $M$ or larger. The factorization formulas are applied to the annihilation decay rates and production cross sections of S-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^3$, and of P-wave states, up to corrections of relative order $v^2$.

Redesigning Lattice QCD

There has been major progress in recent years in the development of improved discretizations of the QCD action, current operators, etc for use in numerical simulations that employ very coarse lattices. These lectures review the field theoretic techniques used to design these discretizations, techniques for testing and tuning the new formalisms that result, and recent simulation results employing these formalisms.

Rigorous QCD Predictions for Decays of P-Wave Quarkonia

We present a new factorization theorem for the decay rates of P-wave states of heavy quarkonia. Infrared logarithms that had appeared in previous perturbative calculations of P-wave decays are absorbed into a quantity that is related to the amplitude for the heavy quark and antiquark to be in a relative color-octet S-wave state. We predict all of the light-hadronic and electromagnetic decays rates of the $χ_c$ and $h_c$ states in terms of two phenomenological parameters.

P-Wave Charmonium Production in B-Meson Decays

We calculate the decay rates of $B$ mesons into P-wave charmonium states using new factorization formulas that are valid to leading order in the relative velocity of the charmed quark and antiquark and to all orders in the running coupling constant of QCD. We express the production rates for all four P states in terms of two nonperturbative parameters, the derivative of the wavefunction at the origin and another parameter related to the probability for a charmed-quark-antiquark pair in a color-octet S-wave state to radiate a soft gluon and form a P-wave bound state. Using existing data on $B$ meson decays into $χ_{c1}$ to estimate the color-octet parameter, we find that the color-octet mechanism may account for a significant fraction of the $χ_{c1}$ production rate and that $B$ mesons should decay into $χ_{c2}$ at a similar rate.

Rigorous QCD Predictions for Decays of P-Wave Quarkonia

Rigorous QCD predictions for decay rates of the P-wave states of heavy quarkonia are presented. They are based on a new factorization theorem which is valid to leading order in the heavy quark velocity and to all orders in the running coupling constant of QCD. The decay rates for all four P states into light hadronic or electromagnetic final states are expressed in terms of two phenomenological parameters, whose coefficients are perturbatively calculable. Logarithms of the binding energy encountered in previous perturbative calculations of P-wave decays are factored into a phenomenological parameter that is related to the probability for the heavy quark-antiquark pair to be in a color-octet S-wave state. Applying these predictions to charmonium, we use measured decay rates for the $\chione$ and $\chitwo$ to predict the decay rates of the $\chizero$ and $h_c$.
