$g$ Factor of Lithiumlike Silicon: New Challenge to Bound-State QED

The recently established agreement between experiment and theory for the $g$ factors of lithiumlike silicon and calcium ions manifests the most stringent test of the many-electron bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in the presence of a magnetic field. In this Letter, we present a significant simultaneous improvement of both theoretical $g_\text{th} = 2.000\,889\,894\,4\,(34)$ and experimental $g_\text{exp} = 2.000\,889\,888\,45\,(14)$ values of the $g$ factor of lithiumlike silicon $^{28}$Si$^{11+}$. The theoretical precision now is limited by the many-electron two-loop contributions of the bound-state QED. The experimental value is accurate enough to test these contributions on a few percent level.

Isotope shifts of the $1s^22s2p(J)$ -$1s^22s^2$ transition energies in Be-like thorium and uranium

Precise calculations of the isotope shifts in berylliumlike thorium and uranium ions are presented. The main contributions to the field and mass shifts are calculated within the framework of the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian employing the configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. These calculations include the relativistic, electron-electron correlation, and Breit-interaction effects. The QED, nuclear deformation, and nuclear polarization corrections are also evaluated.

Ground-state hyperfine splitting of B-like ions in high-Z region

The hyperfine splitting of the ground state of selected B-like ions within the range of nuclear charge numbers $Z=49-83$ is investigated in detail. The rigorous QED approach together with the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method are employed for the evaluation of the interelectronic-interaction contributions of first and higher orders in $1/Z$. The screened QED corrections are evaluated to all orders in $αZ$ by using an effective potential. The influence of nuclear magnetization distribution is taken into account within the single-particle nuclear model.

Ground-state $g$ factor of middle-$Z$ boronlike ions

Theoretical calculations of the interelectronic-interaction and QED corrections to the $g$ factor of the ground state of boronlike ions are presented. The first-order interelectronic-interaction and the self-energy corrections are evaluated within the rigorous QED approach in the effective screening potential. The second-order interelectronic interaction is considered within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil effect is also taken into account. The results for the ground-state $g$ factor of boronlike ions in the range $Z$=10--20 are presented and compared to the previous calculations.

Dynamically assisted Schwinger effect beyond the spatially-uniform-field approximation

We investigate the phenomenon of electron-positron pair production from vacuum in the presence of a strong electric field superimposed by a weak but fast varying pulse which substantially increases the total particle yield. We employ a nonperturbative numerical technique and perform the calculations beyond the spatially-uniform-field approximation, i.e. dipole approximation, taking into account the coordinate dependence of the fast component. The analysis of the main characteristics of the pair-production process (momentum spectra of particles and total amount of pairs) reveals a number of important features which are absent within the previously used approximation. In particular, the structure of the momentum distribution is modified both qualitatively and quantitatively, and the total number of pairs created as well as the enhancement factor due to dynamical assistance become significantly smaller.

Relativistic calculations of X-Ray transition energies and isotope shifts in heavy atoms

X-Ray transition energies and isotope shifts in heavy atoms are evaluated. The energy levels with vacancies in the inner shells are calculated within the approximation of the average of nonrelativistic configuration employing the Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The obtained results are compared with other configuration-interaction theoretical calculations and with experimental data.

Interelectronic-interaction contribution to the nonlinear Zeeman effect in boronlike ions

Relativistic calculations of the second- and third-order contributions in magnetic field to the Zeeman splitting in boronlike ions are presented for the wide range of nuclear charge numbers $Z=6$--$92$. The interelectronic-interaction correction of the first order in $1/Z$ is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$. The higher-order corrections in $1/Z$ are taken into account approximately by means of effective screening potentials. The obtained results are important for interpretation of experimental data on the Zeeman splitting in boronlike ions, in particular, for the ARTEMIS experiment presently implemented at GSI.

One-center calculations of the electron-positron pair creation in low-energy collisions of heavy bare nuclei

The probabilities of bound-free electron-positron pair creation are calculated for head-on collisions of bare uranium nuclei beyond the monopole approximation. The calculations are based on the numerical solving of the time-dependent Dirac equation in the target reference frame with multipole expansion of the projectile potential. In addition, the energy dependence of the pair-creation cross section is studied in the monopole approximation.

Binding energies of the $1s^2\,2s\,2p\, ^3P_{0,2}$ states of berylliumlike xenon

Binding energies of the $^3P_0$ and $^3P_2$ levels of the $1s^2\,2s\,2p$ electron configuration in berylliumlike xenon are rigorously evaluated using ab initio QED approach. All relevant one- and many-electron QED contributions are accounted for up to the second order of the perturbation theory. The interelectronic-interaction effects of the third and higher orders are considered within the Breit approximation. Nuclear recoil effect is taken into account as well. In addition, we study all possible levels of the configuration $1s^2\,2s\,2p$, namely $^1P_1$ and $^3P_{0,1,2}$, by means of the configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method in berylliumlike neon, iron, and xenon. In this case the QED effects are treated approximately within the model QED approach. The obtained theoretical predictions are compared with the results of previous relativistic calculations and high-precision measurements.

Momentum distribution of particles created in space-time-dependent colliding laser pulses

We study the pair-production process in the presence of two counterpropagating linearly polarized short laser pulses. By means of a nonperturbative technique, we take into account the full coordinate dependence of the external field going beyond the dipole and standing-wave approximations. In particular, we analyze the momentum distribution of particles created. It is demonstrated that the spatial variations of the laser pulses may play a crucial role. The more accurate treatment reveals a number of prominent features: the pair-production probabilities become considerably smaller, the quantitative behavior of the momentum spectra changes dramatically, and the pulse shape effects become much less pronounced. The results of our study are expected to be very important for future theoretical and experimental investigations.

Access via laboratory experiments to the level mixing effect induced by blackbody radiation and its influence on the cosmological hydrogen recombination problem

An effect of atomic line broadening induced by the blackbody radiation is discussed. The level mixing effect and anti-Stokes Raman scattering are compared. It is shown that the mixing effect gives the most significant contribution to the line broadening and it is indicated how to distinguish these two effects in laboratory experiments. The influence of the level mixing on the recombination history of primordial plasma is also discussed.

Ground-state ionization energies of boronlike ions

High-precision QED calculations of the ground-state ionization energies are performed for all boronlike ions with the nuclear charge numbers in the range $16 \leqslant Z\leqslant 96$. The rigorous QED calculations are performed within the extended Furry picture and include all many-electron QED effects up to the second order of the perturbation theory. The contributions of the third- and higher-order electron-correlation effects are accounted for within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization effects are taken into account as well. In comparison with the previous evaluations of the ground-state ionization energies of boronlike ions the accuracy of the theoretical predictions has been improved significantly.

Pulse shape effects on the electron-positron pair production in strong laser fields

The pair-production process in the presence of strong linearly polarized laser fields with a subcycle structure is considered. Laser pulses with different envelope shapes are examined by means of a nonperturbative numerical technique. We analyze two different "flat" envelope shapes and two shapes without a plateau for their various parameters including the carrier-envelope phase. The resonant Rabi oscillations, momentum distribution of particles created, and total number of pairs are studied. It is demonstrated that all these characteristics are very sensitive to the pulse shape.

Relativistic calculations of differential ionization cross sections: Application to antiproton-hydrogen collisions

A new relativistic method based on the Dirac equation for calculating fully differential cross sections for ionization in ion-atom collisions is developed. The method is applied to ionization of the atomic hydrogen by antiproton impact, as a non-relativistic benchmark. The fully differential, as well as various doubly and singly differential cross sections for ionization are presented. The role of the interaction between the projectile and the target nucleus is discussed. Several discrepancies in available theoretical predictions are resolved. The relativistic effects are studied for ionization of hydrogenlike xenon ion under the impact of carbon nuclei.

Nuclear excitation by two-photon electron transition

A new mechanism of nuclear excitation via two-photon electron transitions (NETP) is proposed and studied theoretically. As a generic example, detailed calculations are performed for the $E1E1$ $1s2s\,^1S_0 \rightarrow 1s^2\,^1S_0$ two-photon decay of He-like $^{225}$Ac$^{87+}$ ion with the resonant excitation of the $3/2+$ nuclear state with the energy 40.09(5) keV. The probability for such a two-photon decay via the nuclear excitation is found to be $P_{\rm NETP} = 3.5 \times 10^{-9}$ and, thus, is comparable with other mechanisms, such as nuclear excitation by electron transition and by electron capture. The possibility for the experimental observation of the proposed mechanism is thoroughly discussed.

Electron-positron pair production in external electric fields varying both in space and time

The Schwinger mechanism of electron-positron pair production in the presence of strong external electric fields is analyzed numerically for the case of one- and two-dimensional field configurations where the external field depends both on time and one spatial coordinate. In order to provide this analysis, a new efficient numerical approach is developed. The number of particles created is obtained numerically and also compared with the analytical results for several exactly solvable one-dimensional backgrounds. For the case of two-dimensional field configurations the effects of the spatial finiteness are examined, which confirms their importance and helps us to attest our approach further. The corresponding calculations are also performed for several more interesting and nontrivial combinations of temporal and spatial inhomogeneities. Finally, we discuss the case of a spatially periodic external field when the approach is particularly productive. The method employed is described in detail.

Isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions

Isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions are evaluated for a wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=8-92. The calculations of the relativistic nuclear recoil and nuclear size effects are performed using a large scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The corresponding QED corrections are also taken into account. The results of the calculations are compared with the theoretical values obtained with other methods. The accuracy of the isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions is significantly improved.
