Evidence for the absence of regularization corrections to the partial-wave renormalization procedure in one-loop self energy calculations in external fields

The equivalence of the covariant renormalization and the partial-wave renormaliz ation (PWR) approach is proven explicitly for the one-loop self-energy correction (SE) of a bound electron state in the presence of external perturbation potentials. No spurious correctio n terms to the noncovariant PWR scheme are generated for Coulomb-type screening potentia ls and for external magnetic fields. It is shown that in numerical calculations of the SE with Coulombic perturbation potential spurious terms result from an improper treatment of the unphysical high-energy contribution. A method for performing the PWR utilizing the relativistic B-spline approach for the construction of the Dirac spectrum in external magnetic fields is proposed. This method is applied for calculating QED corrections to the bound-electron $g$-factor in H-like ions. Within the level of accuracy of about 0.1% no spurious terms are generated in numerical calculations of the SE in magnetic fields.

Nonresonant corrections to the 1s-2s two-photon resonance for the hydrogen atom

The nonresonant (NR) corrections are estimated for the most accurately measured two-photon transition 1s-2s in the hydrogen atom. These corrections depend on the measurement process and set a limit for the accuracy of atomic frequency measurements. With the measurement process adopted in the modern experiments the NR contribution for 1s-2s transition energy can reach 10^{-3} Hz while the experimental inaccuracy is quoted to be +/- 46 Hz.

Asymmetry of the natural line profile for the hydrogen atom

The asymmetry of the natural line profile for transitions in hydrogen-like atoms is evaluated within a QED framework. For the Lyman-alpha $1s-2p$ absorption transition in neutral hydrogen this asymmetry results in an additional energy shift of 2.929856 Hz. For the $2s_{1/2}-2p_{3/2}$ transition it amounts to -1.512674 Hz. As a new feature this correction turns out to be process dependent. The quoted numbers refer to the Compton-scattering process.

Dynamical Casimir effect at finite temperature

Thermal effects on the creation of particles under the influence of time-dependent boundary conditions are investigated. The dominant temperature correction to the energy radiated by a moving mirror is derived by means of response theory. For a resonantly vibrating cavity the thermal effect on the number of created photons is obtained non-perturbatively. Finite temperatures can enhance the pure vacuum effect by several orders of magnitude. The relevance of finite temperature effects for the experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect is addressed.

The hyperfine structure of highly charged $^{238}_{92}$U ions with rotationally excited nuclei

The hyperfine structure (hfs) of electron levels of $^{238}_{92}$U ions with the nucleus excited in the low-lying rotational $2^+$ state with an energy $E_{2^+} = 44.91$ keV is investigated. In hydrogenlike uranium, the hfs splitting for the $1s_{1/2}$-ground state of the electron constitutes 1.8 eV. The hyperfine-quenched (hfq) lifetime of the $1s2p ^3P_0$ state has been calculated for heliumlike $^{238}_{92}$U and was found to be two orders of magnitude smaller than for the ion with the nucleus in the ground state. The possibility of a precise determination of the nuclear $g_r$ factor for the rotational $2^+$ state by measurements of the hfq lifetime is discussed.

The Standard Model in Strong Fields: Electroweak Radiative Corrections for Highly Charged Ions

Electroweak radiative corrections to the matrix elements $ $ are calculated for highly charged hydrogenlike ions. These matrix elements constitute the basis for the description of the most parity nonconserving (PNC) processes in atomic physics. The operator ${\hat H}_{PNC}$ represents the parity nonconserving relativistic effective atomic Hamiltonian at the tree level. The deviation of these calculations from the calculations valid for the momentum transfer $q^{2}=0$ demonstrates the effect of the strong field, characterized by the momentum transfer $q^{2}=m_{e}^{2}$ ($m_{e}$ is the electron mass). This allows for a test of the Standard Model in the presence of strong fields in experiments with highly charged ions.

The second-order electron self-energy in hydrogen-like ions

A calculation of the simplest part of the second-order electron self-energy (loop after loop irreducible contribution) for hydrogen-like ions with nuclear charge numbers $3 \leq Z \leq 92$ is presented. This serves as a test for the more complicated second-order self-energy parts (loop inside loop and crossed loop contributions) for heavy one-electron ions. Our results are in strong disagreement with recent calculations of Mallampalli and Sapirstein for low $Z$ values but are compatible with the two known terms of the analytical $Zα$-expansion.

Recoil correction to the ground state energy of hydrogenlike atoms

The recoil correction to the ground state energy of hydrogenlike atoms is calculated to all orders in αZ in the range Z = 1-110. The nuclear size corrections to the recoil effect are partially taken into account. In the case of hydrogen, the relativistic recoil correction beyond the Salpeter contribution and the nonrelativistic nuclear size correction to the recoil effect, amounts to -7.2(2) kHz. The total recoil correction to the ground state energy in hydrogenlike uranium (^{238}U^{91+}) constitutes 0.46 eV.

Trembling cavities in the canonical approach

We present a canonical formalism facilitating investigations of the dynamical Casimir effect by means of a response theory approach. We consider a massless scalar field confined inside of an arbitaray domain $G(t)$, which undergoes small displacements for a certain period of time. Under rather general conditions a formula for the number of created particles per mode is derived. The pertubative approach reveals the occurance of two generic processes contributing to the particle production: the squeezing of the vacuum by changing the shape and an acceleration effect due to motion af the boundaries. The method is applied to the configuration of moving mirror(s). Some properties as well as the relation to local Green function methods are discussed. Exact two-loop vacuum polarization correctionto the Lamb shift in hydrogen-like ions

We present a calculation scheme for the two-loop vacuum polarization correction of order $α^2$ to the Lamb shift of hydrogen-like high-Z atoms. The interaction with the external Coulomb field is taken into account to all orders in $(Zα)$. By means of a modified potential approach the problem is reduced to the evaluation of effective one-loop vacuum polarization potentials. An expression for the energy shift is deduced within the framework of partial wave decomposition performing appropriate subtractions. Exact results for the two-loop vacuum polarization contribution to the Lamb shift of K- and L-shell electron states in hydrogen-like Lead and Uranium are presented.
