Structure of germanene/Al(111): a two-layers surface alloy

Unlike silicene, for which the demonstration of its existence has been done through numerous independent studies, the possibility of growing epitaxial germanene remains highly controversial. It has been recently shown by scanning tunneling microscopy that the (3 x 3) surface reconstruction formed upon Ge deposition on Al(111) presents a honeycomb structure, and it was assigned to a pure germanene monolayer. Using quantitative measurements by surface X-ray diffraction compared to density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that this Ge/Al(111) (3 x 3) reconstruction corresponds, in fact, to a mixed Ge--Al honeycomb layer on top of an alloyed interfacial layer. The model of a germanene monolayer on top of the Al(111) surface can be completely excluded.

A stress-controlled shear cell for small-angle light scattering and microscopy

We develop and thoroughly test a stress-controlled, parallel plates shear cell that can be coupled to an optical microscope or a small angle light scattering setup, for simultaneous investigation of the rheological properties and the microscopic structure of soft materials under an imposed shear stress. In order to minimize friction, the cell is based on an air bearing linear stage, the stress is applied through a contactless magnetic actuator, and the strain is measured through optical sensors. We discuss the contributions of inertia and of the small residual friction to the measured signal and demonstrate the performance of our device in both oscillating and step stress experiments on a variety of viscoelastic materials.

Fast-neutron induced background in LaBr3:Ce detectors

The response of a scintillation detector with a cylindrical 1.5-inch LaBr3:Ce crystal to incident neutrons has been measured in the energy range En = 2-12 MeV. Neutrons were produced by proton irradiation of a Li target at Ep = 5-14.6 MeV with pulsed proton beams. Using the time-of-flight information between target and detector, energy spectra of the LaBr3:Ce detector resulting from fast neutron interactions have been obtained at 4 different neutron energies. Neutron-induced gamma rays emitted by the LaBr3:Ce crystal were also measured in a nearby Ge detector at the lowest proton beam energy. In addition, we obtained data for neutron irradiation of a large-volume high-purity Ge detector and of a NE-213 liquid scintillator detector, both serving as monitor detectors in the experiment. Monte-Carlo type simulations for neutron interactions in the liquid scintillator, the Ge and LaBr3:Ce crystals have been performed and compared with measured data. Good agreement being obtained with the data, we present the results of simulations to predict the response of LaBr3:Ce detectors for a range of crystal sizes to neutron irradiation in the energy range En = 0.5-10 MeV

An efficient scheme for sampling fast dynamics at a low average data acquisition rate

We introduce a temporal scheme for data sampling, based on a variable delay between two successive data acquisitions. The scheme is designed so as to reduce the average data flow rate, while still retaining the information on the data evolution on fast time scales. The practical implementation of the scheme is discussed and demonstrated in light scattering and microscopy experiments that probe the dynamics of colloidal suspensions using CMOS or CCD cameras as detectors.

Behavior of colloidal particles at an air/nematic liquid crystal interface

We examine the behavior of spherical silica particles trapped at an air-nematic liquid crystal interface. When a strong normal anchoring is imposed, the beads spontaneously form various structures depending on their area density and the nematic thickness. Using optical tweezers, we determine the pair potential and explain the formation of these patterns. The energy profile is discussed in terms of capillary and elastic interactions. Finally, we detail the mechanisms that control the formation of an hexagonal lattice and analyze the role of gravity for curved interfaces.
