Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Dome in the Heavy-Fermion $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$ System

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

Charge transport in Ho$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$: Separating Positive and Negative Magnetoresistance in Metals with Magnetic Ions

The magnetoresistance (MR) $Δρ/ρ$ of cage-glass compound Ho$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ with various concentration of magnetic holmium ions ($x$$\leq$0.5) has been studied in detail concurrently with magnetization M(T) and Hall effect investigations on high quality single crystals at temperatures 1.9-120 K and in magnetic field up to 80 kOe. The undertaken analysis of $Δρ/ρ$ allows us to conclude that the large negative magnetoresistance (nMR) observed in vicinity of Neel temperature is caused by scattering of charge carriers on magnetic clusters of Ho$^{3+}$ ions, and that these nanosize regions with AF exchange inside may be considered as short range order AF domains. It was shown that the Yosida relation $-Δρ/ρ$$\sim$$M^2$ provides an adequate description of the nMR effect for the case of Langevin type behavior of magnetization. Moreover, a reduction of Ho-ion effective magnetic moments in the range 3-9$μ_B$ was found to develop both with temperature lowering and under the increase of holmium content. A phenomenological description of the large positive quadratic contribution $Δρ/ρ$$\sim$$μ_D^2 H^2$ which dominates in Ho$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ in the intermediate temperature range 20-120 K allows to estimate the drift mobility exponential changes $μ_D$$\sim$$T^{-a}$ with $a$=1.3-1.6 depending on Ho concentration. An even more comprehensive behavior of magnetoresistance has been found in the AF state of Ho$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ where an additional linear positive component was observed and attributed to charge carriers scattering on the spin density wave (SDW). High precision measurements of $Δρ/ρ=f(H,T)$ have allowed us also to reconstruct the magnetic H-T phase diagram of Ho$_{0.5}$Lu$_{0.5}$B$_{12}$ and to resolve its magnetic structure as a superposition of 4f (based on localized moments) and 5d (based on SDW) components.

Suppression of asymmetric differential resistance in non-Fermi liquid system YbCu_(5-x)Al_(x) (x = 1.3 - 1.75) in high magnetic fields

The non-Fermi liquid system (NFL) YbCu_(5-x)Al_(x) (x = 1.3 - 1.75) has been investigated in hetero- as well as homo-contact arrangement in magnetic fields up to 22.5 T. The observed dV/dI(V) characteristics reveal asymmetry in hetero-contact arrangement and do not agree with the model of thermal contact heating, at least close to zero-bias voltage. In the case of a hetero-contact arrangement we have observed a maximum at only one voltage polarity at about 1.3 mV (for x = 1.5), which asymmetry is suppressed in an applied magnetic field. This behavior is connected with NFL properties of studied compounds.

Point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of superconducting energy gaps in 122-type family of iron pnictides

A brief overview of the superconducting energy gap studies on 122-type family of iron pnictides is given. It seems that the situation in the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is well resolved. Most of the measurements including the presented here point-contact Andreev reflection spectra agree on existence of multiple nodeless gaps in the excitation spectrum of this multiband system. The gaps have basically two sizes - the small one with a strength up to the BCS weak coupling limit and the large one with a very strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 6 - 8. In the electron doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 the most of the experiments including our point contact measurements reveal in quite broadened spectra only a single gap with a strong coupling strength. The high precision ARPES measurements on this system identified two gaps but very close to each other, both showing a strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 5 and 6, respectively.

Evidence for two-gap superconductivity in (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 by directional point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy

Directional point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy measurements on the Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals are presented. The spectra show significant differences when measured in the $ab$ plane in comparison with those measured in the $c$ direction of the crystal. In the latter case only a reduced point-contact conductance around zero bias has been revealed persisting well above $T_c$ and probably related to the structural and magnetic transitions in the system. Within the $ab$ plane two superconducting energy gaps are detected below $T_c$. Here a reduced conductance above $T_c$ could also be found. The fits of the $ab$-plane data to the superconducting s-wave two-gap model indicate that the smaller gap has a size below the BCS value while the large gap reveals much higher coupling strength.
