Stability of Slow-Fast Nonlinear Dynamics: Moving Equilibrium Case

We study the stability of nonlinear systems subject to both slow and fast time variations. Both can have discontinuities, covering switched systems as a special case. The fast variation is assumed to be periodic; thus, we rely on averaging to construct an average system. Importantly, the equilibrium of the average system depends on the slow variation and is assumed to be exponentially stable when this slow input is frozen. Using perturbation and Lyapunov analyses, we establish a practical stability result showing that the system state remains within a neighborhood of the moving equilibrium when the total variation (flows and jumps) of the slow variation is appropriately bounded and the fast input varies sufficiently fast. The result is illustrated via a nonlinear switched system with slow-fast switching and a mode-dependent equilibrium.

Wave-Based Bilateral Teleoperation between Nonlinear Manipulators with Direct Contact Force Feedback

We study bilateral teleoperation between nonlinear, multi-DOF robotic manipulators in the presence of constant communication delays. Unlike classical wave-transformation architectures that transmit a coordinating force, we consider the case where the environmental force is reflected to the master side to enhance teleoperation transparency. Since direct contact force feedback might destabilize the closed-loop system, we first develop a passivity-shortage characterization for the Euler--Lagrange remote system using a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. An upper strictly passive communication law is then employed to compensate for the computed passivity shortage so that the closed-loop stability under delays as well as position and force synchronization are preserved under appropriate conditions. Simulations with nonlinear 2-DOF robotic manipulators in different settings illustrate our approach.

Stability of Slow-Fast Nonlinear Dynamics: Non-Periodic Case

We present sufficient conditions for the semi-global exponential stability of nonlinear systems whose dynamics have both slow and fast time variations. Unlike most existing results, the fast variation is non-periodic, thereby allowing a wider class of systems, especially switched systems with fast (non-periodic) switching and those with quasi-periodic variations; we therefore rely on general averaging to construct an average system. It is assumed that the average system admits a time-invariant equilibrium that is globally exponentially stable when the slow variation is frozen, i.e., remaining at a fixed value. This slow variation is allowed to be discontinuous in time, provided its total variation (flows and jumps) is bounded. The main result is illustrated using a nonlinear switched system with slow-fast non-periodic switching.

Observer-Based Stabilization for Linear Multi-Agent Dynamical Systems Using Generalized Frequency Variables

We address the conditions and design of controllers and observers for homogeneous networks of linear MIMO agents. We develop networked controllers and observers that ensure the stability of both the system state and the estimation error, leveraging the concept of generalized frequency variables. A separation principle for networks is then established, showing that the observer and controller can be designed independently and combined to achieve a stable output feedback. Our results are illustrated via a highly unstable, oscillatory network of locally actuated pendulums on carts. Finally, necessary conditions for controllability and observability -- derived from agent properties and network structure -- are established and discussed.
