Photon production in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies

Single photon spectra in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies are studied in the relativistic transport model that incorporates self-consistently the change of hadron masses in dense matter. We separate the total photon spectrum into `background' arising from the radiative decays of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons, and the `themal' one from other sources. For the latter we include contributions from radiative decays of $ρ$, $ω$, $η'$, and $a_1$, radiative decays of baryon resonances, as well as two-body processes such as $ππ\to ργ$ and $πρ\to πγ$. It is found that more than 95% of all photons come from the decays of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons, while the thermal photons account for less than 5% of the total photon yield. The thermal photon spectra in our calculations with either free or in-medium meson masses do not exceed the upper bound set by the experimental measurment of the WA80 Collaboration.

Kaons in dense matter, kaon production in heavy-ion collisions, and kaon condensation in neutron stars

The recent past witnesses the growing interdependence between the physics of hadrons, the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and the physics of compact objects in astrophysics. A notable example is the kaon which plays special roles in all the three fields. In this paper, we first review the various theoretical investigations of kaon properties in nuclear medium, focusing on possible uncertainties in each model. We then present a detailed transport model study of kaon production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies. We shall discuss especially the elementary kaon and antikaon production cross sections in hadron-hadron interactions, that represent one of the most serious uncertainties in the transport model study of particle production in heavy-ion collisions. The main purpose of such a study is to constrain kaon in-medium properties from the heavy-ion data. This can provide useful guidances for the development of theoretical models of the kaon in medium. In the last part of the paper, we apply the kaon in-medium properties extracted from heavy-ion data to the study of neutron star properties. Based on a conventional equation of state of nuclear matter that can be considered as one of the best constrained by available experimental data on finite nuclei, we find that the maximum mass of neutron stars is about 2$M_\odot$, which is reduced to about 1.5$M_\odot$ once kaon condensation as constrained by heavy-ion data is introduced.

Electromagnetic probes of dense matter in heavy-ion collisions

Dilepton and photon production in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies are studied in the relativistic transport model that incorporates self-consistently the change of hadron masses in dense matter. It is found that the dilepton spectra in proton-nucleus reactions can be well described by the conventional mechanism of Dalitz decay and direct vector meson decay. However, to provide a quantitative explanation of the observed dilepton spectra in central heavy-ion collisions requires contributions other than these direct decays and also various medium effects. Introducing a decrease of vector meson masses in hot dense medium, we find that these heavy-ion data can be satisfactorily explained. Furthermore, the single photon spectra in our calculations with either free or in-medium meson masses do not exceed the upper bound deduced from the experiments by the WA80 Collaboration.

Momentum Dependence of Single Particle Potential in Dirac Brueckner Approach

The momentum dependence of the empirical scalar and vector potentials needed for describing relativistic heavy-ion collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon is compared with that derived from self-consistent Dirac-Brueckner calculations using the Bonn-A potential. Our calculated scalar and vector potentials exhibit a weak momentum dependence and their magnitudes decrease with nucleon momentum, in close similarity with the momentum dependence required by the empirical potentials. The effects of explicit momentum dependence on the properties of equilibrium nuclear matter are found to be small.

Phi Meson Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions at SIS Energies

Phi meson production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies ($\sim 2$ GeV/nucleon) is studied in the relativistic transport model. We include contributions from baryon-baryon, pion-baryon, and kaon-antikaon collisions. The cross sections for the first two processes are obtained in an one-boson-exchange model, while that for the last process is taken to be of Breit-Wigner form through the phi meson resonance. The dominant contribution to phi meson production in heavy ion collisions at these energies is found to come from secondary pion-nucleon collisions. Effects due to medium modifications of kaon masses are also studied and are found to reduce the phi meson yield by about a factor of two, mainly because of increased phi decay width as a result of dropping kaon-antikaon masses. In this case, the $ϕ/K^-$ ratio is about 4%, which is a factor of 2-3 below preliminary experimental data from the FOPI collaboration at GSI. Including also the reduction of phi meson mass in medium increases this ratio to about 8%, which is then in reasonable agreement with the data.

Phi meson production cross sections in pion-baryon and baryon-baryon interactions

Phi meson production in pion-baryon and baryon-baryon interactions near the production threshold is studied in a boson-exchange model. Parameters in this model are either taken from the Bonn model for the nucleon-nucleon potential or determined from the measured phi meson decay width and the experimental data for the reactions $π^-p\arr ϕn$ and $pp\arr ppϕ$. The isospin-averaged cross sections for the reactions $πN\arr ϕN$, $πΔ\arr ϕN$, $NN\arr NNϕ$, which are needed in transport models to study phi meson production in heavy-ion collisions at subthreshold energies, have been evaluated. For the reactions $NΔ\arr NNϕ$ and $ΔΔ\arr NNϕ$, which become singular when the exchanged pion is on-shell, the Peierls method is used to calculate their cross sections. We find that the cross section for the reaction $πN\arrϕN$ is much larger than the other cross sections.

Strangeness production and flow in heavy-ion collisions

We study strangeness (K^+, K^-, and Lambda) production and flow in Ni+Ni collisions at 1-2 AGeV, based on the relativistic transport model including the strangeness degrees of freedom. We find that strangeness spectra and flow are sensitive to the properties of strange hadrons in nuclear medium. The predictions of the chiral perturbation theory that the K^+ feels a weak repulsive potential and K^- feels a strong attractive potential are in good agreement with recent experimental data from FOPI and KaoS collaborations.

Symmetry energy of nuclear matter and properties of neutron statrs in a relativistic approach

Asymmetric nuclear matter is treated in the formalism of Dirac-Brueckner approach with Bonn one-boson-exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction. We extract the symmetry energy coefficient at the saturation to be about 31 MeV, which is in good agreement with empirical value of $30\pm 4$ MeV. The symmetry energy is found to increase almost linearly with the density, which differs considerably from the results of non-relativistic approaches. This finding also supports the linear parameterization of Prakash, Ainsworth and Lattimer. We find, furthermore, that the higher-order dependence of the nuclear equation of state on the asymmetry parameter is unimportant up to densities relevant for neutron stars. The resulting equation of state of neutron-rich matter is used to calculate the maximum mass of neutron star, and we find it to be about 2.1$M_\odot$. Possible mechanisms for the softening of the equation of state are also discussed.

Nucleon flow and dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions

Nucleon flow in Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon region and dilepton spectra in S+Au collisions at SPS energies are analysed in the relativistic transport model. They are shown to be sensitive to the nucleon vector and scalar potentials, respectively, and are thus useful probes of these potentials in dense matter. A recently developed effective Lagrangian with self-interactions of vector as well as scalar fields is found to describe both data reasonably well.

Dilepton production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS energies

Dilepton production in proton- and nucleus-induced reactions is studied in relativistic transport model using initial conditions determined by the string dynamics from RQMD. It is found that both the CERES and HELIOS-3 data for dilepton spectra in proton-nucleus reactions can be well described by the `conventional' mechanism of Dalitz decay and direct vector meson decay. However, to provide a quantitative explanation of the observed dilepton spectra in central S+Au and S+W collisions requires contributions other than these direct decays. Introducing a decrease of vector meson masses in hot and dense medium, we find that these heavy-ion data can also be satisfactorily explained. This agrees with our earlier conclusions based on a fire cylinder model. We also give predictions for Pb+Au collisions at 160 GeV/nucleon using current CERES mass resolution and acceptance.

Medium effects in high energy heavy-ion collisions

The change of hadron properties in dense matter based on various theoretical approaches are reviewed. Incorporating these medium effects in the relativistic transport model, which treats consistently the change of hadron masses and energies in dense matter via the scalar and vector fields, heavy-ion collisions at energies available from SIS/GSI, AGS/BNL, and SPS/CERN are studied. This model is seen to provide satisfactory explanations for the observed enhancement of kaon, antikaon, and antiproton yields as well as soft pions in the transverse direction from the SIS experiments. In the AGS heavy-ion experiments, it can account for the enhanced $K^+/π^+$ ratio, the difference in the slope parameters of the $K^+$ and $K^-$ transverse kinetic energy spectra, and the lower apparent temperature of antiprotons than that of protons. This model also provides possible explanations for the observed enhancement of low-mass dileptons, phi mesons, and antilambdas in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies. Furthermore, the change of hadron properties in hot dense matter leads to new signatures of the quark-gluon plasma to hadronic matter transition in future ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC/BNL.

Antikaon flow in heavy-ion collisions: the effects of absorption and mean fields

We study antikaon flow in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies based on the relativistic transport model (RVUU 1.0). The production of antikaons from both baryon-baryon and pion-baryon collisions are included. Taking into account only elastic and inelastic collisions of the antikaon with nucleons and neglecting its mean-field potential as in the cascade model, a strong antiflow or anti-correlation of antikaons with respect to nucleons is seen as a result of the strong absorption of antikaons by nucleons. However, the antiflow of antikaons disappears after including also their propagation in the attractive mean-field potential. The experimental measurement of antikaon flow in heavy-ion collision will be very useful in shedding lights on the relative importance of antikaon absorption versus its mean-field potential.

Lambda flow in heavy-ion collisions: the role of final-state interactions

Lambda flow in Ni+Ni collisions at SIS energies is studied in the relativistic transport model (RVUU 1.0). It is found that for primordial lambdas the flow is considerably weaker than proton flow. The inclusion of final-state interactions, especially the propagation of lambdas in mean-field potential, brings the lambda flow close to that of protons. An accurate determination of lambda flow in heavy-ion experiments is shown to be very useful for studying lambda properties in dense matter.

Effects of in-medium vector meson masses on low-mass dileptons from SPS heavy-ion collisions

Using a relativistic transport model to describe the expansion of the fire-cylinder formed in the initial stage of heavy-ion collisions at SPS/CERN energies, we study the production of dileptons with mass below about 1 GeV from these collisions. The initial hadron abundance and their momentum distributions in the fire-cylinder are determined by following the general features of the results from microscopic models based on the string dynamics and further requiring that the final proton and pion spectra and rapidity distributions are in agreement with available experimental data. For dilepton production, we include the Dalitz decay of $π^0$, $η$, $η^\prime$, $ω$ and $a_1$ mesons, the direct decay of primary $ρ^0$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons, and the pion-pion annihilation that proceeds through the $ρ^0$ meson, the pion-rho annihilation that proceeds through the $a_1$ meson, and the kaon-antikaon annihilation that proceeds through the $ϕ$ meson. We find that the modification of vector meson properties, especially the decrease of their mass due to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry, in hot and dense hadronic matter, provides a quantitative explanation of the recently observed enhancement of low-mass dileptons by the CERES collaboration in central S+Au collisions and by the HELIOS-3 collaboration in central S+W collisions.

From $K^+$ in heavy-ion collisions to $K^-$ in kaonic atoms

Kaon production and kaon flow in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies are analyzed using the relativistic transport model. The experimental data are found to be consistent with the scenario that kaon scalar (before being cut down by the range term) and vector mean field potentials are about 1/3 of that of nucleons in the Walecka model. This also explains the strong attraction found for $K^-$ in kaonic atoms, and gives information on the possibility of $K^-$ condensation in dense matter.

Transverse momentum dependence of transverse flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The strength of transverse flow is examined as a function of transverse momentum $p_t$ using a simple, transversely moving thermal model and a more realistic, relativistic transport model (ART). It is shown that the $p_t$ dependence reveals useful information about the collective flow that is complementary to that obtained from the standard in-plane transverse momentum analysis. Interesting features of using the $p_t$ dependence to study the equation of state of the superdense hadronic matter formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are demonstrated.

Kaon production cross sections from baryon-baryon interactions

In a one-pion plus one-kaon exchange model, we calculate the kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions. We find that this model describes reasonably well the experimental data on kaon production in the proton-proton interaction. Near the kaon production threshold, the cross section obtained from this model is smaller than that from the linear parameterization of Randrup and Ko. For kaon production cross sections from the nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions, the cross sections are singular in free space, so we calculate them in a nuclear medium by including the (complex) pion self-energy. The results are compared with the scaling ansatz of Randrup and Ko. The theoretical cross sections are then used in a transport model to study kaon production from Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon.
