Specific Heat Discontinuity DeltaC vs Tc in Annealed Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

The low temperature specific heat of annealed single crystal samples of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with compositions spanning the entire superconducting phase diagram was measured. Effort was made to discover the best annealing schedule to maximize Tc and minimize transition width in these samples. Values of deltaC/Tc normalized to 100% superconducting volume fractions varied proportionally to Tc^alpha. Within a rather narrow error bar of +-0.15, the exponent alpha was the same (approximately 2) over a range of compositions (0.055 < x < 0.15) around the optimal concentration, x=0.08, where Tc is the maximum in the phase diagram. Thus, whether the superconductivity was coexistent with magnetism (underdoped) or not (overdoped) did not affect the non-BCS variation (alpha nearly 2 instead of 0.8-0.9 for BCS superconductors) of deltaC/Tc with Tc. The annealed samples in the present work, with increased deltaC/Tc and Tc values compared to previous results for the Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 alloy system, suggest that the intrinsic value of the exponent alpha for the iron superconductors, when the samples are annealed, with fewer defects, may indeed be even further from the BCS value of 0.8-0.9 than previously thought.

Specific Heat To Hc2: Evidence for Nodes or Deep Minima in the Superconducting Gap of Under- and Overdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

Low temperature specific heat, C, in magnetic fields up to Hc2 is reported for underdoped Ba(Fe0.955Co0.045)2As2 (Tc=8 K) and for three overdoped samples Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0.103, 0.13, and 0.15, Tc=17.2, 16.5, and 11.7 K respectively). Previous measurements of thermal conductivity (as a function of temperature and field) and penetration depth on comparable composition samples gave some disagreement as to whether there was fully gapped/nodal behavior in the under-/overdoped materials respectively. The present work shows that the measured behavior of the specific heat gamma (proportional to C/T as T->0, i. e. a measure of the electronic density of states at the Fermi energy) as a function of field approximately obeys gamma proportional to H**(0.5 +- 0.1), similar to the Volovik effect for nodal superconductors, for both the underdoped and the most overdoped Co samples. However, for the two overdoped compositions x=0.103 and 0.13, the low field (H < 10 T) data show a Volovik-like behavior of gamma proportional to H**(0.3-0.4), followed by an inflection point, followed at higher fields by gamma proportional to H**1. We argue that within the 2-band theory of superconductivity, an inflection point may occur if the interband coupling is dominant.

Volovik effect in a highly anisotropic multiband superconductor: experiment and theory

We present measurements of the specific heat coefficient γ(= C/T) in the low temperature limit as a function of an applied magnetic field for the Fe-based superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$. We find both a linear regime at higher fields and a limiting square root $H$ behavior at very low fields. The crossover from a Volovik-like $\sqrt{H}$ to a linear field dependence can be understood from a multiband calculation in the quasiclassical approximation assuming gaps with different momentum dependence on the hole- and electron-like Fermi surface sheets.

Pauli-limiting effects in the upper critical fields of a clean LiFeAs single crystal

We have investigated the temperature-dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) in a LiFeAs single crystal by direct measurements of resistivity under static magnetic fields up to 36 T. We find in the case of a magnetic field H along the ab-plane that Hc2ab(0) = 30 T is clearly lower than the orbital limiting field Hc2orb,ab (0) = 39.6 T estimated by the |dHc2ab / dT|Tc, suggesting the presence of both Pauli- and orbital-limiting effects in the pair breaking process. The best fit of Hc2ab(T) to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula results in the Maki parameter α = 0.9 and negligible spin-orbit scattering constant (λso = 0.0). On the other hand, for H along the c-axis, Hc2c(T) increases linearly down to our lowest temperature of 0.8 K, which can be explained by the multi-band effects. The anisotropy ratio Hc2ab(T) / Hc2c(T) is 3 near Tc and systematically decreases upon lowering temperature to become 1.3 at zero temperature. A comparative overview of the behavior of Hc2ab(T) in various Fe-based superconductors shows that, similar to LiFeAs, the calculated Hc2orb,ab (0) is generally much larger than the measured Hc2ab(0) and thus finite α values ranging from ~ 0.4 to 3 are necessary to describe the low temperature Hc2ab(T) behaviors. Moreover, LiFeAs is found to have the smallest |dHc2ab / dT|Tc values, indicating that LiFeAs is one of the cleanest Fe-based superconductors with a finite Maki parameter. We also discuss the implications of multi-band effects and spin-orbit scattering based on the finding that the estimated Pauli-limiting field is generally much larger than the BCS prediction in the Fe-based superconductors.

Superconductivity in Iron Compounds

Kamihara and coworkers' report of superconductivity at Tc = 26 K in fluorine-doped LaFeAsO inspired a worldwide effort to understand the nature of the superconductivity in this new class of compounds. These iron pnictide and chalcogenide (FePn/Ch) superconductors have Fe electrons at the Fermi surface, plus an unusual Fermiology that can change rapidly with doping, which lead to normal and superconducting state properties very different from those in standard electron-phonon coupled 'conventional' superconductors. Clearly superconductivity and magnetism/magnetic fluctuations are intimately related in the FePn/Ch - and even coexist in some. Open questions, including the superconducting nodal structure in a number of compounds, abound and are often dependent on improved sample quality for their solution. With Tc values up to 56 K, the six distinct Fe-containing superconducting structures exhibit complex but often comparable behaviors. The search for correlations and explanations in this fascinating field of research would benefit from an organization of the large, seemingly disparate data set. This review attempts to provide an overview, using numerous references, with a focus on the materials and their superconductivity.

Specific Heat Discontinuity, deltaC, at Tc in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 - Consistent with Unconventional Superconductivity

We report the specific heat discontinuity, deltaC/Tc, at Tc = 28.2 K of a collage of single crystals of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 and compare the measured value of 38.5 mJ/molK**2 with other iron pnictide and iron chalcogenide (FePn/Ch) superconductors. This value agrees well with the trend established by Bud'ko, Ni and Canfield who found that deltaC/Tc ~ a*Tc**2 for 14 examples of doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 and BaFe2-xTMxAs2, where the transition metal TM=Co and Ni. We extend their analysis to include all the FePn/Ch superconductors for which deltaC/Tc is currently known and find deltaC/Tc ~ a*Tc**1.9 and a=0.083 mJ/molK**4. A comparison with the elemental superconductors with Tc>1 K and with A-15 superconductors shows that, contrary to the FePn/Ch superconductors, electron-phonon-coupled conventional superconductors exhibit a significantly different dependence of deltaC on Tc, namely deltaC/Tc ~ Tc**0.9. However deltaC/gamma*Tc appears to be comparable in all three classes (FePn/Ch, elemental and A-15) of superconductors with, e. g., deltaC/gamma*Tc=2.4 for BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2. A discussion of the possible implications of these phenomenological comparisons for the unconventional superconductivity believed to exist in the FePn/Ch is given.

Specific heat in KFe2As2 in zero and applied magnetic field

The specific heat down to 0.08 K of the iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2 was measured on a single crystal sample with a residual resistivity ratio of ~650, with an onset Tc determined by specific heat of 3.7 K. The zero field normal state specific heat divided by temperature, C/T, was extrapolated from above Tc to T=0 by insisting on agreement between the extrapolated normal state entropy at Tc, Sn(Tc), and the measured superconducting state entropy at Tc, Ss(Tc), since for a second order phase transition the two entropies must be equal. This extrapolation would indicate that this rather clean sample of KFe2As2 exhibits non-Fermi liquid behavior, i. e. C/T increases at low temperatures, in agreement with the reported non-Fermi liquid behavior in the resistivity. However, specific heat as a function of magnetic field shows that the shoulder feature around 0.7 K, which is commonly seen in KFe2As2 samples, is not evidence for a second superconducting gap as has been previously proposed but instead is due to an unknown magnetic impurity phase, which can affect the entropy balance and the extrapolation of the normal state specific heat. This peak (somewhat larger in magnitude) with similar field dependence is also found in a less pure sample of KFe2As2, with a residual resistivity ratio of only 90 and an onset Tc=3.1 K. These data, combined with the measured normal state specific heat in field to suppress superconductivity, allow the conclusion that an increase in the normal state specific heat as T->0 is in fact not seen in KFe2As2, i. e. Fermi liquid behavior is observed.

Hybridization driven quantum critical behavior in weakly-itinerant ferromagnets

We investigate the unusual magnetic properties of nearly-critical, weakly-itinerant ferromagnets with general formula UTX, where T=Rh,Co and X=Ge,Si. As a unique feature about these systems, we show that changes in the V_{df} hybridization control their proximity to a ferromagnetic instability, and determine the evolution of: the ground state magnetization, M_0, the Curie Temperature, T_C, the density of states at the Fermi level, N(E_F), the T^2 resistivity coefficient, A, and the specific heat coefficient, γ. The universal aspect of our findings comes from the dependence on only two parameters: the T_d bandwidth, W_d, and the distance between T_d and U_f band centers, C_{T_d}-C_{U_f}.

Single crystal growth and superconducting properties of LiFeAs

We report the successful growth of high quality single crystals of LiFeAs with lateral sizes up to 5 x 5 mm2 by the Sn-flux method. Electrical resistivity studies reveal that the superconducting onset temperature is 18.2 K with a transition width less than 1.1 K and the ratio of room temperature to residual resistivity is about 24. Bulk superconductivity is supported by perfect shielding in the magnetic susceptibility and a clear jump in the specific heat Cp, resulting in deltaCp/T ~ 20.0 mJ/mol*K2. Upper critical field slopes of dHc2c/dT ~ -1.39 and dHc2ab/dT ~ -2.99 T/K near Tc predict zero temperature upper critical fields of Hc2c(0) ~ 17.2 and Hc2ab(0) ~ 36.9 T and coherence lengths of Xi_ab = 4.4 and Xi_c = 2.0 nm in a single band model. This result points to a modest superconducting anisotropy about 2.3 in LiFeAs.

Specific Heat vs Field in the 30 K Superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2

We report specific heat measurements on the Fe-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2, a material on which previous penetration depth, NMR, and thermal conductivity measurements have observed a high density of low-energy excitations, which have been interpreted in terms of order parameter nodes. Within the resolution of our measurements, the low temperature limiting C/T is found to be linear in field, i.e. we find no evidence for a Volovik effect associated with nodal quasiparticles in either the clean or dirty limit. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent contradiction.

Superconductivity in Undoped Single Crystals of BaFe2As2: Field and Current Dependence

In previous work in undoped MFe2As2, partial drops in the resistivity indicative of traces of superconductivity have been observed in some samples of M=Ba (Tc ~ 20 K, up to 25% drop in resistivity) and M=Ca (Tc ~ 10 K, up to 45 % drop in resistivity.) A complete drop in the resistivity to 0, along with a finite fraction of Meissner flux expulsion, has been observed in M=Sr, Tc = 22 K. Using In-flux grown single crystal samples of undoped BaFe2As2, we find a complete drop in the resistivity to 0 in most samples beginning at Tc(onset) = 22.5 K. However, in contrast to the SrFe2As2 results, there is no measurable Meissner effect and no suppression of the resistive superconducting transition with annealing. The current sensitivity of the superconducting resistive transition in our samples of BaFe2As2 is quite strong, with an increase in the current density of a factor of 15 to ~ 1.5 A/cm2 not changing Tc(onset) but broadening the transition significantly and causing the resistivity to remain finite as T approaches 0. To investigate if this unusually low critical current is indicative of filamentary conduction lacking the apparent anisotropy seen in the critical magnetic field, Hc2, measurements of, e. g., the bulk superconductor Co-doped BaFe2As2, Hc2 was measured in both crystalline directions. These BaFe2As2 samples show Hc2(T) values in the ab-plane and along the c-axis comparable to those seen in BaFe2-xCoxAs2, which has a similar Tc. Since the lack of Tc suppression after annealing argues against strain-induced superconductivity as proposed for the other undoped MFe2As2 materials, another possible cause for the superconductivity in BaFe2As2 is discussed.

Vortex-glass phase transition and superconductivity in an under- doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal

Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal with Tc=26.2 K. It is found that the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field Hc2 decreases from 4 to 2.8 with decreasing temperature from Tc to 24.8 K. Consistent with the vortex-glass theory, the I-V curves measured at H=9 T can be well scaled with the vortex-glass transition temperature of Tg=20.7 K and critical exponents z=4.1 and v=1. Analyses in different magnetic fields produced almost identical critical exponent values, with some variation in Tg, corroborating the existence of the vortex-glass transition in this under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal up to 9 T. A vortex phase diagram is presented, based on the evolution of Tg and Hc2 with magnetic field.

Evidence for Coexistence of Superconductivity and Magnetism in Single Crystals of Co-doped SrFe$_2$As$_2$

In order to investigate whether magnetism and superconductivity coexist in Co-doped SrFe$_2$As$_2$, we have prepared single crystals of SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$, $x$ = 0 and 0.4, and characterized them via X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity in zero and applied field up to 9 T as well as at ambient and applied pressure up to 1.6 GPa, and magnetic susceptibility. At $x$ = 0.4, there is both magnetic and resistive evidence for a spin density wave transition at 120 K, while $T_c$ = 19.5 K - indicating coexistent magnetism and superconductivity. A discussion of how these results compare with reported results, both in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ and in other doped 122 compounds, is given.

Current-voltage characteristics of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors

The vortex phase diagrams of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors are determined from the analysis of resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 T. A clear vortex glass to liquid transition is identified only in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85, in which I-V curves can be well scaled onto liquid and glass branches consistent with the vortex glass theory. With increasing magnetic field, the activation energy U0, deduced from the Arrhenius plots of resistivity based on the thermally activated flux-flow model (TAFF), decays more quickly for NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 than for NdFeAsO0.85. Moreover, the irreversibility field Hirr of NdFeAsO0.85 increases more rapidly than that of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 with decreasing temperature. These observations evidence the strong vortex pinning effects, presumably caused by the enhanced defects and disorders in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85. It is inferred that the enhanced defects and disorder can be also responsible for the vortex glass to liquid transition in the NdFeAsO0.85.

On the nature of two superconducting transitions in the specific heat of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$: Effects of crystal grinding

Specific heat, dc- and ac-magnetic susceptibility are reported for a large single crystal of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and, after grinding, its powder. The room temperature effective paramagnetic moment of the crystal was consistent with the Pr$^{3+}$ ionic configuration and full occupancy of the Pr-sublattice. The crystal showed two distinct anomalies in the specific heat and an overall discontinuity in $C/T$ of more than 1000 mJ/K$^2$mol. The upper transition (at $T_{c1}$) was rounded, in an agreement with previous reports. The anomaly at $T_{c2}$ was very sharp, consistent with a good quality of the crystal. We observed a shoulder in $χ$' and two peaks in $χ$'' below $T_{c1}$. However, there were no signatures in $χ$' of the lower temperature transition. PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is extremely sensitive to grinding, which suppresses the upper superconducting transition in both the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. $ΔC/T_{c}$ was reduced to 140 mJ/K$^2$ mol in the powdered sample. Existing data on ground, polished, and sliced crystals suggests the existence of a length scale of order 100 $μ$, characterizing the higher temperature superconducting phase.

Grueneisen Ratio Divergence at the Quantum Critical Point in CeCu_{6-x}Ag_x

The heavy fermion system CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ is studied at its antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, $x_c=0.2$, by low temperature ($T\geq 50$ mK) specific heat, $C(T)$, and volume thermal expansion, $β(T)$, measurements. Whereas $C/T\propto \log(T_0/T)$ would be compatible with the predictions of the itinerant spin-density-wave (SDW) theory for two-dimensional critical spin fluctuations, $β(T)/T$ and the Grüneisen ratio, $Γ(T)\propto β/C$, diverge much weaker than expected, in strong contrast to this model. Both $C$ and $β$, plotted as a function of the reduced temperature $t=T/T_0$ with $T_0=4.6$ K are similar to what was observed for YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$ ($T_0=23.3$ K) indicating a striking discrepancy to the SDW prediction in both systems.

Interplay between disorder, quantum and thermal fluctuations in ferromagnetic alloys: The case of UCu2Si(2-x)Ge(x)

We consider, theoretically and experimentally, the effects of structural disorder, quantum and thermal fluctuations in the magnetic and transport properties of certain ferromagnetic alloys. We study the particular case of UCu2Si(2-x)Ge(x). The low temperature resistivity, rho(T,x), exhibits Fermi liquid (FL) behavior as a function of temperature T for all values of x, which can be interpreted as a result of the magnetic scattering of the conduction electrons from the localized U spins. The residual resistivity, rho(0,x), follows the behavior of a disordered binary alloy. The observed non-monotonic dependence of the Curie temperature, Tc(x), with x can be explained within a model of localized spins interacting with an electronic bath whose transport properties cross-over from ballistic to diffusive regimes. Our results clearly show that the Curie temperature of certain alloys can be enhanced due to the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations with disorder.

Non-Fermi liquid normal state of the Heavy Fermion superconductor UBe13

Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior in the normal state of the heavy-fermion superconductor UBe13 is studied by means of low-temperature measurements of the specific heat, C, and electrical resistivity, ρ, on a high-quality single crystal in magnetic fields up to 15.5 T. At B=0, unconventional superconductivity forms at Tc=0.9 K out of an incoherent state, characterized by a large and strongly temperature dependent ρ(T). In the magnetic field interval 4 T \leq B \leq 10 T, ρ(T) follows a T^3/2 behavior for Tc(B)\leq T \leq 1 K, while ρis proportional to T at higher temperatures. Corresponding Non-Fermi liquid behavior is observed in C/T as well and hints at a nearby antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) covered by the superconducting state. We speculate that the suppression of short-range AF correlations observed by thermal expansion and specific heat measurements below T_L \simeq 0.7 K (B=0) yields a field-induced QCP, T_L \to 0, at B=4.5 T.
