Negative-parity high-spin structure of 105Pd

Negative-parity medium- and high-spin structure of the nucleus 105Pd was studied through the 96Zr(13C,4n)105Pd reaction at incident energies of 51 and 58 MeV, using the EUROBALL IV gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the DIAMANT charged particle array. New bands have been observed and the previously reported bands have been extended to higher energies and spins. Altogether six decoupled bands with E2 transitions and one strongly coupled band with M1 + E2 transitions have been observed. The observed energy spectra and B(M1)/B(E2) ratios are compared with results of quantum particle rotor model calculations. Based on these comparisons, quasiparticle configurations can be assigned to two newly observed decoupled bands as well as to the strongly coupled band. The previously emerged possible interpretation for the third decoupled band as a two-phonon wobbling excitation lacks support. The observations indicate possible gamma-band nature for this band. The strongly coupled band, consistently with the absence of another observed strongly coupled band in this experiment, does not exhibit chirality.

Lifetime of the $4^+_1$ state of $^{132}$Te

The evolution of the collectivity of tellurium isotopes from mid-shell towards $N=82$ is currently based mainly on properties of the first excited $2^+$ states. To extend structural information in this isotopic chain, in particular with respect to the balance of microscopic, seniority-type and collective excitations, electric quadrupole transition strengths from $4^+$ states need to be considered. An experiment was performed to determine the $4_1^+$ lifetime of $^{132}$Te via the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method at the University of Cologne tandem accelerator. The isotope of interest was populated in the two neutron-transfer reaction $^{130}$Te($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{132}$Te$^*$. The $E2$ decay transition strength has been determined to be $B(E2; 4^+_1\rightarrow 2^+_1) = 9.3(10)\, \text{W.u.}$ and compares favourably to shell model calculations.

Revised $B(E2; 2^{+}_{1} \rightarrow 0^{+}_{1})$ value in the semi-magic nucleus $^{210}$Pb

The lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state of $^{210}$Pb was measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{18}$O, $^{16}$O)$^{210}$Pb two-neutron transfer reaction by $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy employing the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The extracted absolute $B(E2)$$\downarrow$ value of ${119\;^{+\;9}_{-\;8}\;\hspace{-0pt}\,\text{e}^2\text{fm}^4}$ is consistent with previously reported measurements, but with significantly improved precision. The available experimental data for the $2^+_1$-$4^+_1$-$6^+_1$-$8^+_1$ multiplet are compared with shell-model calculations based on the well-established Kuo-Herling interaction. The new $B(E2)$$\downarrow$ value agrees well with the shell-model prediction, providing evidence that the properties of the $2^+_1$ and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Pb can be consistently described together within the nuclear shell-model framework.

Isolated one-phonon mixed-symmetry 2+ state of the radioactive neutron-rich nuclide 132Te

The $M1$ transition strengths between excited $2^+$ states of the neutron-rich, radioactive nuclide $^{132}$Te have been studied through direct lifetime measurements using the Doppler-shift attenuation method in a two-neutron transfer reaction on a $^{130}$Te target. An unambiguous identification of the lowest-lying mixed-symmetry $2^+$ state has been achieved on the basis of the large $B(M1;2^+_2\rightarrow2^+_1$)=0.18(2) $\mu_\mathrm{N}^2$ transition strength, in agreement with shell-model calculations. Results are compared to the shell model, and the analysis of both, data and calculations, unambiguously identifies the second-excited $2^+$ state of $^{132}$Te as the one-quadrupole phonon mixed-symmetry state of this isotope. A lowering of the energy and $B(M1;2^+_\mathrm{ms}\rightarrow 2^+_1)$ strength within the $N$=80 isotones toward the $Z$=50 shell closure is observed, which goes alongside with the lowering of the $E2$ collectivity approaching the magic proton shell.

Nuclear Level Density and $γ$-ray Strength Function of $^{67}\mathrm{Ni}$ and the impact on the i-process

Proton-$γ$ coincidences from $(\mathrm{d},\mathrm{p})$ reactions between a $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}$ beam and a deuterated polyethylene target have been analyzed with the inverse-Oslo method to find the nuclear level density (NLD) and $γ$-ray strength function ($γ$SF) of $^{67}\mathrm{Ni}$. The $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(n,γ)$ capture cross section has been calculated using the Hauser-Feshbach model in TALYS using the measured NLD and $γ$SF as constraints. The results confirm that the $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(n,γ)$ reaction acts as a bottleneck when relying on one-zone nucleosynthesis calculations. However, the impact of this reaction is strongly dampened in multi-zone models of low-metallicity AGB stars experiencing i-process nucleosynthesis.

Structure of high-lying levels populated in the $^{96}$Y $\rightarrow ^{96}$Zr $β$ decay

The nature of $J^π=1^-$ levels of $^{96}$Zr below the $β$-decay $Q_β$ value of $^{96}$Y has been investigated in high-resolution $γ$-ray spectroscopy following the $β$ decay as well as in a campaign of inelastic photon scattering experiments. Branching ratios extracted from $β$ decay allow the absolute $E1$ excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of $1^-$ levels below the $Q_β$ value, which are investigated in the theoretical approach of the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. This study clarifies the nuclear structure properties associated with the enhanced population of high-lying levels in the $^{96}$Y$_{gs}$ $β$ decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum.

Experimental Evidence for Transverse Wobbling in $^{105}$Pd

New rotational bands built on the $ν$$(h_{11/2})$ configuration have been identified in $^{105}$Pd. Two bands built on this configuration show the characteristics of transverse wobbling: the $Δ$$I$=1 transitions between them have a predominant E2 component and the wobbling energy decreases with increasing spin. The properties of the observed wobbling bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained triaxial covariant density functional theory and quantum particle rotor model calculations. This provides the first experimental evidence for transverse wobbling bands based on a one-neutron configuration, and also represents the first observation of wobbling motion in the $A$$\sim$100 mass region.

A revised $B(E2; 2^+_1 \to 0^+_1)$ value in the semi-magic nucleus $^{210}$Po

The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$, the $2^+_2$ and the $3^-_1$ states of $^{210}$Po have been measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The results for the lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for consistent description of the properties of the yrast $2^+_1$, $4^+_1$, $6^+_1$, and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. The Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Linking partial and quasi dynamical symmetries in rotational nuclei

Background: Quasi dynamical symmetries (QDS) and partial dynamical symmetries (PDS) play an important role in the understanding of complex systems. Up to now these symmetry concepts have been considered to be unrelated. Purpose: Establish a link between PDS and QDS and find an emperical manifestation. Methods: Quantum number fluctuations and the intrinsic state formalism are used within the framework of the interacting boson model of nuclei. Results: A previously unrecognized region of the parameter space of the interacting boson model that has both O(6) PDS (purity) and SU(3) QDS (coherence) in the ground band is established. Many rare-earth nuclei approximately satisfying both symmetry requirements are identified. Conclusions: PDS are more abundant than previously recognized and can lead to a QDS of an incompatible symmetry.

Microscopic Restoration of Proton-Neutron Mixed Symmetry in Weakly Collective Nuclei

Starting from the microscopic low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction V{low k}, we present the first systematic shell model study of magnetic moments and magnetic dipole transition strengths of the basic low-energy one-quadrupole phonon excitations in nearly-spherical nuclei. Studying in particular the even-even N=52 isotones from 92Zr to 100Cd, we find the predicted evolution of the predominantly proton-neutron non-symmetric state reveals a restoration of collective proton-neutron mixed-symmetry structure near mid-shell. This provides the first explanation for the existence of pronounced collective mixed-symmetry structures in weakly-collective nuclei.

Polarization and relaxation of radon

Investigations of the polarization and relaxation of $^{209}$Rn by spin exchange with laser optically pumped rubidium are reported. On the order of one million atoms per shot were collected in coated and uncoated glass cells. Gamma-ray anisotropies were measured as a signal of the alignment (second order moment of the polarization) resulting from the combination of polarization and quadrupole relaxation at the cell walls. The temperature dependence over the range 130$^\circ$C to 220$^\circ$C shows the anisotropies increasing with increasing temperature as the ratio of the spin exchange polarization rate to the wall relaxation rate increases faster than the rubidium polarization decreases. Polarization relaxation rates for coated and uncoated cells are presented. In addition, improved limits on the multipole mixing ratios of some of the main gamma-ray transitions have been extracted. These results are promising for electric dipole moment measurements of octupole-deformed $^{223}$Rn and other isotopes, provided sufficient quantities of the rare isotopes can be produced.
