Neutrino Mixings and Leptonic CP Violation from CKM Matrix and Majorana Phases

The high scale mixing unification hypothesis recently proposed by three of us (R. N. M., M. K. P. and G. R.) states that if at the seesaw scale, the quark and lepton mixing matrices are equal then for quasi-degenerate neutrinos, radiative corrections can lead to large solar and atmospheric mixings and small reactor angle at the weak scale in agreement with data. Evidence for quasi-degenerate neutrinos could, within this framework, be interpreted as a sign of quark-lepton unification at high scale. In the current work, we extend this model to show that the hypothesis works quite successfully in the presence of CP violating phases (which were set to zero in the first paper). In the case where the PMNS matrix is identical to the CKM matrix at the seesaw scale, with a Dirac phase but no Majorana phase, the low energy Dirac phase is predicted to be ($\simeq 0.3^{\circ}$) and leptonic CP-violation parameter $J_{CP} \simeq (4 - 8)\times 10^{-5}$ and $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ}$. If on the other hand, the PMNS matrix is assumed to also have Majorana phases initially, the resulting theory damps radiative magnification phenomenon for a large range of parameters but nevertheless has enough parameter space to give the two necessary large neutrino mixing angles. In this case, one has $θ_{13} = 3.5^{\circ} - 10^{\circ}$ and $|J_{CP}|$ as large as $0.02-0.04$ which are accessible to long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

See-saw fermion masses in an SO(10) GUT

In this work we study an SO(10) GUT model with minimum Higgs representations belonging only to the 210 and 16 dimensional representations of SO(10). We add a singlet fermion S in addition to the usual 16 dimensional representation containing quarks and leptons. There are no Higgs bi-doublets and so charged fermion masses come from one-loop corrections. Consequently all the fermion masses, Dirac and Majorana, are of the see-saw type. We minimize the Higgs potential and show how the left-right symmetry is broken in our model where it is assumed that a D-parity odd Higgs field gets a vacuum expectation value at the grand unification scale. From the renormalization group equations we infer that in our model unification happens at 10^{15} GeV and left-right symmetry can be extended up to some values just above 10^{11} GeV. The Yukawa sector of our model is completely different from most of the standard grand unified theories and we explicitly show how the Yukawa sector will look like in the different phases and briefly comment on the running of the top quark mass. We end with a brief analysis of lepton number asymmetry generated from the interactions in our model.

Neutrino oscillation probabilities: Sensitivity to parameters

We study in detail the sensitivity of neutrino oscillation probabilities to the fundamental neutrino parameters and their possible determination through experiments. The first part of the paper is devoted to the broad theme of isolating regions in the neutrino (and anti-neutrino) energy and propagation length that are sensitive to the oscillation parameters. Such a study is relevant to neutrinos both from the Earth's atmosphere or from a neutrino factory. For completeness we discuss the sensitivity, however small, to the parameters involved in a three-generation framework, and to the Earth matter density profile. We then study processes relevant to atmospheric neutrinos which are sensitive to and allow precision measurements of the mixing angle theta_23 and mass-squared difference delta_32 apart from the mixing angle theta_13. Crucial to this analysis is charge identification; detectors having this capability can isolate these matter effects. In particular, we address the issue of using matter effects to determine whether the mixing angle theta_23 is maximal, and, if not, to explore how well its octant can be determined. When realistic detector resolutions are included, we find that deviations of about 15% (20%) from a maximal value of sin^2 theta_23=1/2 can be measured at 95% (99%) CL provided theta_13 is non-zero, sin^2 theta_13 >= 0.015, and the neutrino mass ordering is normal, with fairly large exposures of 1000 kton-years.

From Atoms to Quarks and Beyond: A historical panorama

The inward bound path of discovery unravelling the mysteries of matter and the forces that hold it together has culminated at the end of the twentieth century,in a theory of the Fundamental Forces of Nature based on Nonabelian Gauge Fields, called the Standard Model of High Energy Physics. In this article we trace the historical development of the ideas and the experimental discoveries on which this theory is based. This involves the following components: quantum field theory and quantum electrodynamics, weak interactions and parity violation, strong interactions and quarks, nonabelian gauge fields and spontaneous symmetry breaking. We develop these different strands of history and weave them together. We also mark significant Indian contributions wherever possible. Finally we have a glimpse at future developments, in particular quantum gravity and string theory. An Appendix on more Indian contributions is added at the end.

Hexagonal SU(3) Unification and its Manifestation at the TeV Scale

We consider $SU(3)_{C}\times SU(2)_{AL}\times SU(2)_{BL}\times U(1)_{Y}$ as the low-energy subgroup of supersymmetric $SU(3)^{6}$ unification. This may imply small deviations from quark-lepton universality at the TeV scale, as allowed by neutron-decay data. New particles are predicted with specific properties. We discuss in particular the new heavy gauge bosons corresponding to $SU(2)_{AL} \times SU(2)_{BL} \to SU(2)_L$.

Radiative Magnification of Neutrino Mixings in Split Supersymmetry

Radiative corrections to neutrino mixings in seesaw models depend on the nature of new physics between the weak and the GUT-seesaw scales and can be taken into account using the renormalization group equations. This new physics effect becomes particularly important for models with quasi-degenerate neutrino masses where small neutrino mixings at the seesaw scale can get magnified by radiative renormalization effects alone to match observations. This mechanism of radiative magnification which provides a simple understanding of why lepton mixings are so different from quark mixings was demonstrated by us for the standard supersymmetry scenario where the particle spectrum becomes supersymmetric above the weak scale. In this paper, we examine this phenomenon in split supersymmetry scenarios and find that the mechanism works also for this scenario provided the SUSY scale is at least 2-3 orders below the GUT-seesaw scale and one has larger values of ${\tanβ}$.

Large neutrino mixing angles for type-I see-saw mechanism in SO(10) GUT

We consider the neutrino mixing angles in an SO(10) GUT with the usual Higgs structure in which neutrino masses are explained by the type-I see-saw mechanism. The Dirac-neutrino Yukawa matrix then has a structure similar to that of the $u$-quark. We determine the light neutrino mass matrix through type-I see-saw mechanism using the experimentally consistent $u$-quark Yukawa matrix. We find that large neutrino mixing-angles emerge naturally in this model.

Threshold Effects on Quasi-degenerate Neutrinos with High-scale Mixing Unification

We consider threshold effects on neutrino masses and mixings in a recently proposed model for understanding large solar and atmospheric mixing angles using radiative magnification for the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos. We show that the magnitude of the threshold effects is sufficient to bring concordance between the predictions of this model and latest data from ${\rm KamLAND}$ and ${\rm SNO}$ on observations of neutrino oscillations.

An SO(10) GUT With See-Saw Masses For All Fermions

We propose an SO(10) grand unified theory which has the simplest Higgs structure discussed so far in the literature. We include only two Higgs scalars, a 210-plet and a 16-plet. In addition to the regular fermions we include one singlet, whose mass term breaks chiral symmetry, so that fermions can get masses. All fermions acquire see-saw masses, since there are no Higgs bi-doublets. Required neutrino masses with large mixing as well as leptogenesis are possible in this model.

Working Group Report: Neutrino and Astroparticle Physics

This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-8. We present the discussions carried out during the workshop on selected topics in the above fields and also indicate progress made subsequently. The neutrino physics subgroup studied the possibilites of constraining neutrino masses, mixing and CPT violation in lepton sector from future experiments. Neutrino mass models in the context of abelian horizontal symmetries, warped extra dimensions and in presence of triplet Higgs were studied. Effect of threshold corrections on radiative magnification of mixing angles was investigated. The astroparticle physics subgroup focused on how various particle physics inputs affect the CMBR fluctuation spectrum, and on brane cosmology. This report also contains an introduction on how to use the publicly available code CMBFAST to calculate the CMBR fluctuations.

High scale mixing unification and large neutrino mixing angles

Starting with the hypothesis that quark and lepton mixings are identical at or near the GUT scale, we show that the large solar and atmospheric neutrino mixing angles together with the small reactor angle $U_{e3}$ can be understood purely as a result of renormalization group evolution. The only requirements are that the three neutrinos must be quasi degenerate in mass and have same CP parity. It predicts that the common Majorana mass for the neutrinos must be larger than 0.1 eV making the idea testable in the currently planned or ongoing experiments searching for neutrinoless-double-beta decay.

New "Square Root" Model of Lepton Family Cyclic Symmetry

Following the newly formulated notion of form invariance of the neutrino mass matrix, a complete model of leptons is constructed. It is based on a specific unitary 3 X 3 matrix U in family space, such that U^2 is the simple discrete symmetry nu_e to -nu_e, nu_mu to nu_tau. Thus U also generates the cyclic group Z_4. The charged-lepton mass matrix is nearly diagonal while the neutrino mass matrix is of the form suitable for explaining maximal (large) mixing in atmospheric (solar) neutrino oscillations in the context of three nearly degenerate neutrino masses. Observable lepton flavor violation is predicted. Quarks may be treated in the same way as the charged leptons.

Radiative stability of neutrino-mass textures

Neutrino-mass textures proposed at high-scales are known to be unstable against radiative corrections especially for nearly degenerate eigen values. Within the renormalization group constraints we find a mechanism in a class of gauge theories which guarantees reproduction of any high-scale texture at low energies with radiative stability. We also show how the mechanism explains solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies through the bimaximal texture at high scale.

Double Threefold Degeneracies for Active and Sterile Neutrinos

We explore the possibility that the 3 active (doublet) neutrinos have nearly degenerate masses which are split only by the usual seesaw mechanism from 3 sterile (singlet) neutrinos in the presence of a softly broken $A_4$ symmetry. We take the unconventional view that the sterile neutrinos may be light, i.e. less than 1 keV, and discuss some very interesting and novel phenomenology, including a connection between the LSND neutrino data and solar neutrino oscillations.

Supersymmetric Model of Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Neutrino Masses

We propose the novel lepton-number relationship $L_τ= L_e + L_μ$, which is uniquely realized by the interaction $(\hat ν_e \hat μ- \hat e \hat ν_μ) \hat τ^c$ in supersymmetry and may account for a possibly large muon anomalous magnetic moment. Neutrino masses (with bimaximal mixing) may be generated from the spontaneous and soft breaking of this lepton symmetry.

Anomalous magnetic moment of muon and L-violating Supersymmetric Models

We consider L-violating Supersymmetric Models to explain the recent muon $g_μ -2$ deviation from the Standard Model. The order of trilinear L-violating couplings which we require also generate neutrino mass which is somewhat higher than expected unless one considers highly suppressed $L-R$ mixing of sfermions. However, without such fine tuning for sfermions it is possible to get appropriate muon $g_μ-2$ deviation as well as neutrino mass if one considers some horizontal symmetry for the lepton doublet. Our studies show that $g_μ -2$ deviation may not imply upper bound of about 500 GeV on masses of supersymmetric particles like chargino or neutralino as proposed by other authors for R parity conserving supersymmetric models. However, in our scenario sneutrino mass is expected to be light ($\sim 100$ GeV) and $e-μ-τ$ universality violation may be observed experimentally in near future.
