QUBIC II: Spectro-Polarimetry with Bolometric Interferometry

Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that has the ability to perform spectral imaging. A bolometric interferometer observes the sky in a wide frequency band and can reconstruct sky maps in several sub-bands within the physical band in post-processing of the data. This provides a powerful spectral method to discriminate between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astrophysical foregrounds. In this paper, the methodology is illustrated with examples based on the Q \& U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) which is a ground-based instrument designed to measure the B-mode polarization of the sky at millimeter wavelengths. We consider the specific cases of point source reconstruction and Galactic dust mapping and we characterize the point spread function as a function of frequency. We study the noise properties of spectral imaging, especially the correlations between sub-bands, using end-to-end simulations together with a fast noise simulator. We conclude showing that spectral imaging performance are nearly optimal up to five sub-bands in the case of QUBIC.

The Belle II Physics Book

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

η- η' Mixing -- From Electromagnetic Transitions to Weak Decays of Charm and Beauty Hadrons (presented at Hadron 2011)

It has been realized for a long time that knowing the ηand η' wave functions in terms of quark and gluon components probes our understanding of non-perturbative QCD dynamics. Great effort has been given to this challenge -- yet no clear picture has emerged even with the most recent KLOE data. We point out which measurements would be most helpful in arriving at a more definite conclusion. A better knowledge of these wave functions will significantly help to disentangle the weight of different decay subprocesses in semi-leptonic decays of D^+, D_s^+ and B^+ mesons. The resulting insights will be instrumental in treating even non-leptonic B transitions involving $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ and their CP asymmetries; thus they can sharpen the case for or against New Physics intervening there.

Spectrum of positive and negative parity pentaquarks, including $SU(3)_F$ breaking

We present the spectrum of the lightest pentaquark states of both parities and compare it with the present experimental evidence for these states. We have assumed that the main role for their mass splittings is played by the chromo-magnetic interaction. We have also kept into account the $SU(3)_F$ breaking for their contribution and for the spin orbit term. The resulting pattern is in good agreement with experiment.

Neutrino masses and mixings in SO(10)

Assuming a Zee-like matrix for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses in the see-saw mechanism, one gets maximal mixing for vacuum solar oscillations, a very small value for $U_{e3}$ and an approximate degeneracy for the two lower neutrino masses. The scale of right-handed neutrino Majorana masses is in good agreement with the value expected in a SO(10) model with Pati-Salam $SU(4)\ts SU(2)\ts SU(2)$ intermediate symmetry.

Matching of the Shape Function

The shape function f(k_+) describes Fermi motion effects in inclusive semi-leptonic decays such as B -> X_u+e+nu near the end-point of the lepton spectrum. We compute the leading one-loop corrections to the shape function f(k_+) in the effective theory with a hard cut-off regularization. The matching constant onto full QCD is infrared safe, i.e. the leading infrared singularity represented by the term log^2(k_+) cancels in the difference of integrals. We compare the hard cut-off result with the result in dimensional regularization, the latter containing an additional factor of two in the coefficient of the log^2(k_+) term, and consequently requiring an oversubtraction.

The b -> s gamma decay revisited

In this work we compute the leading logarithmic corrections to the b -> s gamma decay in a dimensional scheme which does not require any definition of the gamma5 matrix. The scheme does not exhibit unconsistencies and it is therefore a viable alternative to the t'Hooft Veltman scheme, particularly in view of the next-to-leading computation. We confirm the recent results of Ciuchini et al.

QCD non-leading corrections to weak decays in the dimensional scheme

We compute the next to leading QCD corrections to weak four fermion interactions introducing a scheme that does not require an explicit definition of $γ_5$ in $d$ dimensions. This scheme reduces greatly the difficulties in calculating the two loop anomalous dimensions; we recover the results obtained in the previous literature.
